Cornucopia Of Corners

April 26th, 2013

Will Jamar Taylor land in Tampa?

Joe can’t spell this out any clearer. The Bucs are thin at cornerback.

Their two projected starters? One is coming off major knee surgery, and the other is returning from Achilles issues and a league-imposed drug suspension.

Their nickel cornerback and backup candidates? Danny Gorrer, Leonard Johnson, Myron Lewis and Anthony Gaitor.

If all that makes you feel confident the Bucs can make a successful playoff run, then Joe’s happy for the calm and optimism that flows through your world. Joe suspects Drew Brees is good with that, too.

Last night, four cornerbacks came off the NFL Draft board, Dee Milliner (Jets), D.J. Hayden (Raiders), Desmond Trufant (Falcons) and Xavier Rhodes (Vikings).

But that leaves a stable of allegedly quality cornerback prospects to be had. They include:

Jamar Taylor (Boise State)
Darius Slay (Mississippi State)
Johnthan Banks (Mississippi State)
Blidi Wreh-Wilson, Connecticut
Robert Alford, Southeastern Louisiana
David Amerson CB, N.C. State
B.W. Webb, William & Mary
Jordan Poyer, Oregon State
Logan Ryan, Rutgers
Dwayne Gratz, Connecticut
Tyrann Mathieu, LSU

The Bucs (for now) have the 43rd overall pick when the draft resumes at 6:30 p.m. with the Jaguars on the clock at No. 33.

Joe’s keeping an extra close eye on Jamar Taylor, who’s known for his crazy work ethic and speed, and he’s considered strong all around. Greg Schiano also has a connection with the Boise State staff. And Joe’s watching the Rutgers kid, Logan Ryan. Joe’s done quite a bit of research on Ryan, and it’s hard to imagine Schiano doesn’t trust and covet him.

Of course, the Bucs might not go cornerback at all. But they still need another good one, or perhaps they can go back to Brandon McDonald to fill their nickel back role, like they did to open last season.

I dont think I’ll ever forgive this team for drafting Jamar Taylor over the Honey Badger. Makes no sense on any level. Tyrann Mathieu is more proven, is more of a playmaker and did it in a way tougher conference.

Honestly looking at that list of CBs I’m not sure I would take ANY of them over Mathieu at this point. 4 CBs are already off the board, and it aint hard to see Mathieu is easily the best CB remaining already in the second round.

Im all in for moving up to get Ertz at 33, then trading back into the second Round for Mathieu.

  2. bucfanjeff Says:

I was kind of surprised we didn’t trade up, but that’s ok, we keep our picks.
Really curious how it plays out tonight.
I think we go CB and DL…maybe two picks in round 2?

  3. SirustheVirus Says:

Bucs take Zack Ertz in the 2nd

  4. Paul Says:

Banks or Taylor, either one would be good with our 2nd.

  5. Paul Says:

I wouldn’t count out QB either if they keep falling.

  6. Being Ikkles Says:

    honey badger now

  7. Warrenfb12 Says:

They are not going to take CB in the second. I hope they snag Ertz.

  8. DC Says:

like ive been saying all along…lets go get JONATHAN BANKS!!! He might not be sitting there at 12..i feel we might have to trade up to 5 or 6 to get him though

  9. Bobby Says:

I think it’s Zach Ertz or Travis Kelce. I also think we trade to get back in the second to take a corner.

  10. Oldguy Says:

A DT with their first pick.

  11. Free's a Boob Says:

A QB with a brain please

  12. Architek Says:

DT or CB, if Nassib is there pull the trigger.

  13. Meh Says:

    Ertz, Hankins, or Short please!

  14. Mike M Says:

Margus Hunt. Kwanne Short, and Logan Ryan (the Honey Badger, though I think he could be trouble if Gruden loves him he can’t be all bad) Dom has to work his magic.

  15. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Last night was weird. I don’t blame teams for passing on Geno Smith though…he has bust written all over him.

Vikings were the winners last night I think.

I could kill the Broncos for taking my guy though…when he got pass the Vikings I thought for sure we’d get him.

  16. ryan Says:

Margus hunt ,tank carridine, damontre moore, then trade up into the second to snag tyrann matheiu

  17. Kenny Says:

I would like Taylor and Arthur brown, not sure we can get both, but that would be awesome.

  18. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Tyrann Mathieu can be a great player but if he’s always suspended what use is he? The kid failed 10+ tests (he “lost count”). How can anyone not see disaster written all over him?!

  19. Rickster07 Says:

I was actually surprises we didn’t move up as well. I’m glad we didn’t though because I feel the last five or so guys could have been there in the second if not for the weak draft class.
I would be awesome if we got a couple guys in the second. CB, TE, DT, even a QB would be awesome. A lot of good value in the second…

  20. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

Was I the only one who cracked up when St. Louis stole Tavon from the Jets?

And then, not taking Floyd really made me shake my head.

  21. stevek Says:

    ODB,

Yup, Tavon went 8th overall, and Eifert went 21st.

Too easy, to see that Tavon is WORTH the pick, and good thing we didn’t think we could get him at 13 because he wouldn’t be there.

I thought Eifert was better than Austin everybody, or at least that is what I heard?

  22. J 2.0 Says:

DT in 2nd then CB. There is a stable of solid CB’s available. AND STOP WITH THE HONEY BADGER CRAP!!! HE IS NOT GOOD!!! 4 CAREER INT’S!!! CHARACTER ISSUES!!! SMALL!!! 5’9!!!! 4.50 40!!!!! 4 REPS ON BENCH!!! RATHER GET HIGH THAN PLAY FOOTBALL!!!

    Sorry for yelling.

  23. BNB Says:

Logan Ryan is my personal favorite if we go CB in the second round Joe, works well with his size and has more than enough speed to “stick” in coverage. The fact that Ryan is a product of Schiano’s system is a huge bonus, especially if we’re looking to fast track this pick.

  24. Bucnjim Says:

Is it me or does it seem this years players all lack star quality. Watched most of the first round and not one player stood out as someone who could dominate in the NFL. Most of them seemed like projects and long shots if you ask me.

  25. st augustine Says:

i think Tyron Mathieu will be gone at 43 regardless of whats being said

  26. teacherman777 Says:

Honey Badger is a play maker!

    Legalize it!

Its better than oxycodon or victotin!

And its a great natural anti-inflammatory!

    Harvard scientists have proved it.

    No worries dogg. Live free.

  27. thegregwitul Says:

I’m not sure about most of the first round players looking like projects and long shots, Bucnjim. I think most of the first round, while lacking in star power, will at least provide solid depth for the teams that drafted them. We may not see many stars, but I don’t think we’ll see a lot of busts either.

I think the players with the biggest bust potential in the first round are also the players with the best chance to be superstars in the NFL. Ziggy Ansah for Detroit or EJ Manuel for Buffalo are two prime examples. Both players pose rather large risks but I think they posses tremendous potential, where as I feel a lot of the other players picked will end up being very productive but unheralded players for their teams, which isn’t a bad thing.

Honestly, I don’t know if this is the weakest draft ever as a lot of people have stated, it just seems to lack any obvious superstars in the making and is very balanced throughout the first three rounds. We might look back on this draft in five years and see that it allowed numerous teams to fill several holes in the first few rounds with starters that are productive but not Pro Bowlers.

  28. J 2.0 Says:

Ok, Mathie will be a 4th round pick. He is not a play maker. The big athletic WR’s of the NFC South will toss him around like a ragdoll. 4 reps! 4.50 40 yard. Two career INT’s. What is playmaker about that?

Also teacherman, I am all for the legalization. I don’t use it, but if you want to I don’t see the big deal.

  29. Being Ikkles Says:

they didnt throw it at the badger thats why he only had the small amount of picks the guy is a playmaker he will be the next ronde barber here with more $$ to drop on the hippie lettuce andf mons

  30. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

You won’t find a bigger advocate for legalization than me.

But, that is not the issue. As long as it’s banned by the NFL, you want to find players with the maturity level to not get busted. If your “playmaker” is suspended, he does you no good. And, whether the substance is roids, adderall, or weed, it doesn’t matter. You need players that you can rely upon.

  31. Walter Says:

Eddie Lacy + Doug Martin = #1 rushing offense

  32. Deminion Says:

Would love to get tank or Hankins there will n more CBs in the 3rd

  33. J 2.0 Says:

He was a slot at LSU. That is why they didn’t throw at him a lot. He is not a physical corner. He is not a Buccaneer man.

I love all Buc’s fans, we all want the same goal acheived, but if you want the Bucs to draft the Badger you are a friggin’ moron!

I remember a hippie lettuce smoking, bad attitude having, undersized, over-hyped “playmaker”, rain making, nick-name having CB a few years ago. Didn’t work out too well.

  34. J 2.0 Says:

I’m with Deminion, finally. Someone speaks with reason and logic.

  35. Deminion Says:

We need DLine depth ppl will b cutting CBs at the end if camp we need pass rushers the game is abt gettin to the QB which we hvnt done we are getting better tho just need pressure with our front four more… Speaking of the honey badger he is a slot corner u don’t waste picks on guys who aren’t gunna start

  36. bucfanjeff Says:

I was high on Trufant, but now that he’s with the Falcons – F**K him! LOL

  37. c-spann Says:

we need hankins or i would be inclined to take a flyer on margus hunt

  38. Oldguy Says:

Agree with spann. Hankins or Hunt would be great for the DL. Seems like first rounders to me.

  39. fridgebob Says:

    stevek

No player picked has proven their worth yet. Do you understand the meaning of the word ‘bust’ and how that relates to the draft and why that totally invalidates your premature comparison? Worth is only shown on the playing field in the NFL, not the size of rookie contracts.

  40. stevek Says:

    Frigdgebob,

No one has proved their worth, true.

A lot of people bashed the idea of Tavon Austin being a top pick, and going before Eifert.

That is all that has happened, and all that can be, so far.

Premature is not the point, you are twisting the situation:

Joe and numerous others said Eifert > Austin, and a sure thing to be drafted 1st

    WRONG! That is all.

  41. Que589 Says:

I’m banging the table for Arthur Brown. Having to compete against RG3, Rusell Wilson, Kaepernick we need to have athletic playmakers at 2nd level of defense. We can go CB in round 3 (equivalent caliber of 2nd rd CB)

  42. stevek Says:

    Fridgebob,

The only “worth” these prospects can show right now is “when” they were drafted.

Numerous people, including Joe HATEFULLY DISMISSED the notion of Tavon Austin> Tyler Eifert, both in abilities and in draft selection.

CORRECTION: Joe did not dismiss anything about Eifert’s ability.–Joe

That is all that can be compared until they play an actual game, season, career.

So far, looks like the Tavon Austin people were right about him being drafted before Tyler Eifert.

Austin was the 1st offesnive skill player drafted, and the 1st skill player.

Take that, and just realize that Austin is a better prospect, time will tell whom the better pro may be. My bet, just like the draft’s bet, is Austin.

  43. PRBucFan Says:

    CB than DT

  44. 4everBucsFan Says:

I still think this early in the draft it would behoove the Bucs to select the best player available. There appear to be a lot of players who have slipped into the second round that were considered to be first round grade. e.g. M.Barkley, E.Lacy, A.Brown, J. Williams, C. Carradine, K. Minter, etc…

  45. Biff Barker Says:

Too many good players left to list, BUT, DT, DT, CB needs must be addressed first!
Our offense was good enough to make it to the playoffs last year. Pick up a RB in late rounds and that’s it!
All this blitzing and stunting blows out loud! We can fix the core of this teams problems with pressure from the front four!

  46. MrGone Says:

Golly gee, Stevek, you were right about Tavon when so many were wrong. OKAY? You can get off his nuts now, he’s not a Buccaneer Man!

  47. c-spann Says:

If we were to get margus hunt, he has the ability to rush from the inside and outside.

    ODB,

Yup, Tavon went 8th overall, and Eifert went 21st.

I thought Eifert was better than Austin everybody, or at least that is what I heard?
    _______________________________

to my knowledge, no one (at least not me) said that Eifert was better than Austin. SPECIFICALLY, i said that Eifert was better “schematically” for us than Austin would be. Austin is the perfect pick for the Rams, given the fact that they have NO receivers. we already have 2 really good ones.

come on steve, lets be logical here.

  49. andres Says:

No Honey Badger in the 2nd, but if he drops to the 4th round then do everything in your power to get him. Bucs have to go with Ertz though here IMO but either Taylor or Ertz and they’ve make a good choice. Taylor on the corner blitz sooo reminds me of a younger Barber, scary!

  50. Daffy Buc Says:

A lot of teams are going to want to move into the early second round to draft a quarterback. Hopefully Rockstar gets an offer to trade down a few spots and pick up an extra third or fourth. Then we can build good depth at CB, DT and TE.
