A Draft Play For Speed, Special Teams?

Draft junkies drooled over University of Texas receiver and Olympic runner Marquise Goodwin ripping off a 4.27 second 40-yard dash in February at the NFL Scouting Combine. And Goodwin is projected to take his skill set to the NFL in the third round of this week’s draft.
Former Bucs quarterback and current NBC Sports Network NFL analyst Shaun King wants the Bucs to pounce on Goodwin if he’s available in the Round 3, so King said on WDAE-AM 620 yesterday.
“He’s very Tavon Austin–like, but one thing this team has not had is a dynamic special teams presence. So I would like us to come out of this draft with a guy who can return punts, who can return kicks, that is a threat,” King said.
Joe is just not confident the Bucs would use Goodwin enough to justify the pick.
The New Schiano Order soured in a hurry on the 4.3 speed of rookie Michael Smith last year. Captain of the inactive list, Smith was drafted in the seventh round and was the opening day kickoff return man but never saw the field again.
Goodwin did not return punts at Texas and was strong but not spectacular on kickoffs — 13 kickoff returns for 327 yards and no touchdowns in 2012.
As far as Goodwin’s potential role in the Bucs offense, Joe’s just not envisioning the Bucs getting creative to let a small receiver like Goodwin (5-9) have an impact. Joe would rather see the Bucs invest in a tight end that has the speed to get open up the seam and change a defense.

Tavon out gained what Goodwin did in a season in his game vs OU..
Yes he has speed put that is all he doesn’t have the ability to aviod tackles, or break them…
If your looking late rounds to fill these needs I rather you go with Swoope. He’s at least proved he can make plays.

Marquise Goodwin will probably be there in round 4…theres too many better WRs..its super deep in rounds 2 and 3 for WR
Im not pining for Goodwin..I actually wanna give Eric Page a real chance as well as Ogletree, Smith and Underwood…but
Goodwin was used completely wrong at Texas,they didnt know how to use him, they didn’t know how to develop him. Their coaching staff laid an egg.

Wow, I thought this would ignite a firestorm amongst us fans since we know how much Bucs fans love track stars but the posts have been sensible so far.
I actually don’t think we need Ertz or any TE that early. I believe Stocker has been underused and is capable of being a solid TE. We don’t need a Gronkowski or Graham, just someone that can do the job well enough.
I want DT or CB with our first pick.

I actually think Crabtree is better than stocker but ertz has good hands and can block should be able to hit the middle

The Bucs have 2 picks in the first three rounds. They have needs for a starter quality player at DT and at the 3rd CB. They also could use upgrades at TE and OT. We also could use some depth at RB and QB. There is no room in the upper rounds of this draft for a WR. Go back to the drawing board Sean but don’t bother putting in that application as a GM.

We will draft defense with our first two picks, and we’ll see a TE maybe in the very late rounds. In between, I would expect some OL depth and maybe another CB, maybe QB.
I’m fully expecting to see Tampa trade up into the 1st round…otherwise Thursday going to suck a little bit.

Potential with no relevant college stats are players the Raiders draft, not the Bucs. C’mon Shaun, do your homework. We have a dire need along the defensive line, of course at corner(still), and TE. Sprinkle in an OT and a WLB and the WR position will have to wait til the draft is over….in my opinion.

If we go tight end it has to be fairly early. We have three team’s worth of tight ends on the roster that were taken in the back half of drafts or undrafted altogether. Adding more would be a waste. It would have to be round two or three and I would rather have a CB and DT with those picks.

I have a feeling we won’t go TE at all and say its put up or shut up for Stocker. I don’t like it, but that’s what I think is going to happen

exactly WC…we don’t need another project junk TE…all our TEs are backups with no starter…no need for another backup
Only TEs I would target are
Eifert – Round 1, prob wont happen
Ertz or Escobar – Round 2
McDonald or Kelce – Round 3

No way the Bucs draft another speed guy that high in the draft. Remeber receiver Dexter Jackson. That worked out well didn’t it. Big difference between running fast without pads and without anybody trying to de cleat you. Draft depth on d line, cb, and tight end taking the best available player. Look for Dominik to jump back into the first round or make a move early in the second to grab a player of need and give up a later pick to do so. It worked last year and he seems to have a knack for it. Go Bucs!

I like Jake Stoneburner TE out of Ohio State in the late rounds. Good speed 4.6 forty, catches it well in traffic but had a horible QB to throw him the ball in college

@WC we easily could get a DT or CB in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th…thats why I could see us grabbing Ertz or Escobar at 43..both are just behind Eifert
some targets I see in those 3 rounds at those positions

DT: John Jenkins, Brandon Williams
CB: Robert Alford, David Amerson, Blidi Wreh- Wilson
Round 4:
DT: Brandon Williams, Akeem Spence, Kwame Geathers
CB: B.W. Webb, Jordan Poyer, Terry Hawthorne, Tyrann Mathieu, Logan Ryan
I think we can get a good DT or CB with our 2nd, 3rd or 4th…but I only see TE as viable in the 2nd or 3rd…thats why I would jump on that first

Stoneburner at best would be behind Stocker and Crabtree…we don’t need depth we need 1 starter.

@Coach fan..he was overrated and they didn’t have enough info on guys like DJ Hayden, Jamar Taylor etc etc
plus he didn’t help himself at all since the season ended, combine etc etc
He might go late 3rd..but I wouldnt consider him til the 4th..try and get good value instead of a reach
Also I watch a lot of Big East football and he wasn’t special at all…pre draft hype BS

All I can say is, Thank God Shaun King isn’t our GM. His opinions suck as much as his quarterback play. I’m sick of everything we do being blasted by him and then comes back and says what a great move.

I’m on board with your line of thinking, I have watched a bit o Kelice, he has great hands and is a pretty good blocker, great down the seam, something our offence needs. But we really need DT, and an extra corner, though I think LJ and Gaitor, Tandy are up and coming especially Johnson. Maybe a QB with the 2nd pick in the 4th is a good line of thinking…

We didn’t know how to use the 4.3 speed of Michael Smith, what would we do with a 4.2 Goodwin? He could make some unbelievable Gatorade runs!!The eagles will show us how to use Benn’s speed in the read option. We need to go DT or CB with the first two picks and then tight end after that.

I think the bucs would be stupid to target a te in the second! too many holes on the d line! i love robert alford in the third or mathieu. both are playmakers who could add solid depth at a much needed position! one player i really have not heard anything about is a dt named bennie logan from lsu. he wore number 18 last season, the same number lsu gives to the hardest worker on the team. gotta love a high motor guy!

I agree 100%.
And to me, WR & TE are the two least needful positions for the Bucs in the draft. TE can be filled for another year by resigning Dallas Clark right after the draft (which I believe is the plan). We have two great starting WRs and Clark, Stocker or one of the othe WRs can catch passes in the slot THIS YEAR.
My main concerns are DT & CB as well…then probably offensive and defensive line depth.

TE, WR, DT, CB are all equal when it comes to need, none need a star but they all need someone who can come in and be counted on to start if need be. BPA fits this perfectly. That Revis trade helped a lot more than I thought it would.

Jackson, Williams, Underwood and we just signed Smith. I don’t think receiver is a pressing need.
I think we should bring back Clark on a 1 year deal because I don’t think drafting a tight end in the 4th or 5th will be any better…..look how little of an impact Stocker has made.
