Dominik: Pause = Sacks

April 22nd, 2013

Greg Schiano already was calling for a double-digit sack season for Da’Quan Bowers. Now rockstar general manager Mark Dominik is talking about Darrelle Revis leading to a significant increase in Buccaneers sacks.

Hmm, will the New Schiano Order issue a revised sack prediction for Bowers?

Speaking this afternoon to the dean of Tampa Bay sports radio, Steve Duemig of WDAE-AM 620, Dominik explained how Revis will cause elite quarterbacks to “pause” at times because of his presence in the secondary.

And that “pause,” per Dominik, will lead to sacks.

Joe’s having a little fun wondering about the revised Bowers sack total. But Dominik’s comments illustrate that the greatest question marks on the Bucs defense now revolve around the pass rush. The Bucs (for now) have a lot riding on unproven defensive ends with weak depth along the entire D-line.

it can’t get any worse than the last 4 years, that is for sure

  2. Bobby Says:

That’s exactly what I said. When you can’t just take a 3 step drop and throw because you know your man is open then it gives the D-line more time to get to the QB. Our sack total will definitely go up.

This is whats killing me about the people saying this was a dumb move (mostly panthers, falcons, and saints forums).

I keep seeing the same thing over and over “the Bucs screwed themselves because one player doesn’t change anything”. Obviously anyone with that take doesn’t know squat about football. A d lineman can affect the secondary, a Safety can affect the linebacking core. Heck a LT can affect his own teams defense.

Looking at this move and saying a CB isn’t worth it is incredibly short sighted. If Revis can return to form, he will affect the whole team positively in so many ways that im not going to list them all.

Im ready and hoping he comes out week one and figuratively slaps all the doubters in the face (im looking at you Prisco).

  4. passthebuc Says:

need. tight end. right tackle, nose guard and another defensive end to bolster the line. If wright is better than last year, revis is 3/4’s as good as bills it will give the D line another second to get to the QB

However i think the real answer is can the D get off the field faster than last year and by how much. You can’t really run the ball well against that D and with the addition of 3 new faces in the back, (wright being absent for most of the year) throwing may be a real problem. That should also transfer to our QB having more confidence knowing he will receive many more chances then previously.

Should translate into the next 2 years being very productive. Going out on a limb, I see 13 wins.

  5. Drew Says:

Think the Rock Star is working a Blount trade behind the scenes to move back into the 1st round or to pick up another 2nd round.

  6. Drew Says:

    Damn he’s shrewd!

  7. Ruggyup Says:

Through weeks and months of comments the Bucs operative word continues to be one huge “IF”. If this, if that, if he, if they……. If I weren’t so totally “iffed” I’d absolutely be “Revis’d” Go Bucs.

  8. BigSombrero Says:

@Drew, I have been a longtime fan of The Dom’s. Im glad hes finally getting some positive traction among fans.

Honestly is there a GM better at the negotiation table the The Rock star?

  9. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

Well, my comments aren’t posting. (But I am sure this one will.)

  10. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

    Of course.

  11. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

I would really encourage some of you to go look at the Giants game from last season. I was fascinated with how fast a WR could beat any one of our CBs. I mean the WRs LITERALLY beat our corners before the ball could get from the center to the QB.

You don’t get sacks when the opposing QBs biggest problem is to decide which open guy should catch this particular pass.

Revis + Goldson = 112% better. (Or, by actual math, 50% better because we replaced two out of four starters in the secondary.)

  12. BigSombrero Says:

@WCBF – I agree. Its kind of a chicken/egg situation. Upgrade the d line and it will help the secondary. Upgrade the secondary and it will help the d line.

  13. J 2.0 Says:

    Blount will not get a 1 or 2. Maybe a 5 or 6.

  14. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

    @BigSombrero

I definitely think it is a combination of the two. The best defensive line to ever play would have trouble getting sacks with a bad secondary and an amazing secondary won’t get picks/sacks and will get beat often with a poor defensive line.

It really is a concerted and united effort from the two. You can’t even evaluate the defensive line from last year accurately because the secondary was so atrocious.

There just needs to be a balance for the defense to be successful. I actually love the thought of Adrian Clayborn, (Any huge DT to take up two blockers), Gerald McCoy, and Da’quan Bowers. I think, if they remain healthy, that they could be one of the best defensive line units in the league.

  15. Andrew 1 Says:

no matter how you feel about the Revis trade, no one can deny that we just got better than we where a few days ago. now even though we lost the 13th pick we can still get a quality player in the 2nd round and become even better.

  16. Andrew 1 Says:

one thing is obvious… the Glazer’s have a renewed interest in the success of this team again. its good to see.

  17. Dreambig Says:

In this afternoons press conference Dom went into good detail desribing how the Bucs prep for the draft. It sounds like we have an excellent, well thought out system and the preparation is top notch. I cant wait for the draft! Dom’s list of successful acquisitions over the last two years are starting to mount up and it’s time, I think for all of you guys who have spent the last several weeks crying over free agency and complaining non stop to jump on board and be proud of our team, our leadership and our ownership. This is a great time to be a Bucs fan as we are about to be a force to be reckoned with!

  18. BigSombrero Says:

Yeah they do. I was never too hard on the Glazers. They looked pretty cheap in some aspects but they were a lot better than some other owners.

@ J 2.0- Blount wont get a 1 or 2 but you can send whatever you get for him and maybe another pick and get a 1 or 2.

@ WCBF – I agree again. AC, Bowers and McCoy healthy can be a good d line. Definitely good enough to keep us competitive. We have to remember that this is an all around team we are building. Its not all on the defense and its not all on the d line. They have help. They just need to play well, not great.

The Ravens were 21st in the league last year sack % wise. We don’t need a NYG type production from our front four, we just need them to make sure the QB’s know they are there.

I would like to add depth though and either a playmaking dt to go alongside McCoy or a viable 3 tech to spell him so he’s not getting worn out throughout the game.

  19. RastaMon Says:

Of course it will…the past two years our DL was just a 1/2 step from the QB release

  20. aj Says:

Anyone who doesn’t think one player can’t make a difference obviously didn’t watch Vincent Jackson last year. He changed everything for the offense. Everything.

No more 8 man boxes. No more tight coverages clogging up passing lanes. Running lanes opened up, even with the patchwork line. The screen pass actually became a viable part of the offense again. All because two defenders were 20 yards or more downfield chasing around after Vincent Jackson on every play.

Early last season, the Bucs couldn’t run even with Nicks, Joseph and the Muscle Hamster. But after week 4-5, when Free showed he was willing to go to Jackson deep, it all changed. Teams had to gameplan for Jackson and everyone else on the offense benefited.

That is what Dom see in Revis. A massive chess piece that can do for the defense what Jackson did for the offense. Make the field smaller for everyone else. Make all of their jobs easier. Allow you to double Roddy White with Wright and Barron, while still bracketing Gonzalez with David/Barber.

  21. crazy Says:

Maybe. Wasn’t the West Coast Offense designed to beat that? High tempo 6 yd passes to the TE/RB/slot receivers in the seams becomes the new vulnerability unless the LBs take that away, right? Revis is a huge addition to the defense but not the only missing piece.

  22. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

    @crazy

I think we have the linebackers to take those away. No team is ever “complete”. It is always a work in progress. There has never been a team that was ecstatic about every single starter on their squad.

Dom said it well when he said you need your stars to step up and carry the team (Or something like that). To make up for the lack of talent elsewhere (Again, paraphrasing here). Revis is SO GOOD that now the single high safety can roll coverage to the other side to help Wright or whoever is lining up over there. Star players mask deficiencies elsewhere.

This team is about as complete as you could ask for. The weak points are the NT, SAM LBer, RT, TE and CB3 (I am sorry but I think Wright is, at worst, average when healthy. He will make a decent number two.) These are just weak points though, not “gaping holes”. Our season will NOT be ruined if we don’t find exceptional players to fill these points.

Players come and go every season so expect a new “hole” to emerge next offseason. If you can’t get excited about the team we have now then I am sorry but you will never be happy.

  23. BigMacAttack Says:

Yeah I have absolutely no complaints right now. I had a Falcon fan talking trash yesterday that Revis can’t cover Julio and Roddy at the same time. I told him to grow up and that we beat them at home with rookie CB’s covering both of his guys. I’ll say to all the NFC South, “bring it”. We will see how it goes, but Darrelle and Dashon should both have huge impacts and make everyone on that defense better.

I promise you that there are 3 QB’s in the NFC South that aren’t happy campers today. And BTW, who are the Falcons going to have play CB? Uh nobody. And does anyone fear the Saints’ worst defense in the league? I don’t think so.

Come to think about it, Revis might be able to cover Julio and Roddy at the same time.

Is everyone in ATL light in the loafers? Or just sound that way?

  24. NJBucsFan Says:

Imagine Rhonde pulling a slot CB blitz while Revis and Wright are playing press with Dashon and Barron rolling to whatever side the slot WR and TE are on. Man that sounds nice!

  25. BigSombrero Says:

@BigMac – im with you. I was raised in North Carolina and now live in Georgia so I have to listen to panther fans and Falcons fans talk crap all the time.

I can’t wait until we get them on the field and smack them around.

  26. NJBucsFan Says:

    damn iPhone… Ronde not Rhonde.

  27. PRBucFan Says:

Our defense has gained a nasty attitude this offseason full of confidence with these latest acquisitions.

Gonna be fun to watch. I’m in disbelief.

  28. PRBucFan Says:

I had gotten so used to watching all the best players go to other teams these last two offseasons have been mind blowing as far as the talent we have acquired.

  29. BigMacAttack Says:

PRBuc I agree. They have brought in some big time players. It’s awesome!

We haven’t been able to use the word “Swagger” in a long time when it comes to defense. It would be nice to get back to that.

  30. PRBucFan Says:

The exact word I was thinking about all along haha
