Mayock Would Be “All Over” Trading For Revis

April 18th, 2013

There are few football minds Joe respects more than Mike Mayock. No, he is not God and nobody is 100 percent. But Mayock puts in the work, the study, the research and doesn’t gin up draft prospects just to get pageviews and change his thoughts every two weeks and plug players into teams where they don’t fit (hello, Todd McShay).

Today, in a marathon conference call, Mayock stated he would do whatever it takes to grab Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis if he were Bucs rockstar general manager Mark Dominik, documents Rich Cimini of BSPN.

However, if Mayock were Jets general manager John Idzik, he’d lock up Revis.

“I’m not trading him. End of story,” Mayock said Thursday on a media conference call. “I’m going to find a way to make it work. I think sometimes we get too carried away with all these draft picks and I’m sitting there saying, ‘Man, corner is a position of need. They’re hard to find.’ This is the best corner in football, and he’s going to be one of the best of all-time, and he’s 27 years old. If I’m New York, I’m not going there.”

From the Bucs’ viewpoint, Mayock said the prospect of acquiring Revis is “pretty exciting. I’m giving up [the 13th pick] to get him, and I’m also talking about some of those other picks. … My perspective from Tampa, man, I’m all over trying to get Darrelle Revis.”

Now Joe has written this time and again: The Bucs are not one star player from a Super Bowl berth. Revis on the Bucs roster does not equate Super Bowl. It just doesn’t.

Of course Revis would help, but at what price? If Idzik was reasonable, Joe could see a trade. Thing is, Idzik doesn’t realize Dominik has Idzik’s privates in a vice that gets tighter by the day.

    Sounds like Mayock is getting paid by the Jets to write this article.

  2. MTM Says:

    Mr. Mayuck that is why you are an analyst and not a G.M.

  3. stevek Says:

    Sounds like Mayock knows what is up.

    Revis is the CB to have, and we are in the most need of his services. We need to get this done.

    LOL, at MTM and passthebuc: you guys ok with mediocrity?

    Joe- Darrelle Revis gives us a chance of bein a super bowl team.

    I understand that not many agree but im one of the few that wants revis at all costs. I believe he is that valuable. Now with that being said im okay with Dom taking his time with this trade so that he dont have to give up a ton for him. But at the end of the day i like star n richardson n rhodes n eifert n so on…..but none of these guys would have the same effect on this team as revis would.

    Say what u want but as well as Dom did last year he has not shown that he can evaluate talent and draft well. He has not shown he can hit in the later rounds, so i could care less if we gave up multiple mid to late round picks.

  5. Deminion Says:

    As long as we keep #13 I’m ok with the trade

  6. Jonny 3.3 Says:

    @MTM: I don’t think there is a football analyst with the name Mayuck.

  7. Dylan Says:

    I think the bucs are a playoff team with revis. Hands down. What’s more important than that? @joe who in your eyes I’m just curious, is gonna come in and shut down Julio jones? Calvin Johnson? Crabtree? Roddy? Percy? These are just off the top of my head WRs I know we play.

  8. stevek Says:

    Revis needs to get to Tampa, Dominick better get it done.

    No Revis, no more rock star moniker.

  9. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

    @stevek

    I would agree with you but the Rock Star moniker has nothing to do with his GM prowess. Joe has stated (more than once) that the Rock Star received his nickname for appearing on many shows during the ten win season.

    @MBF, I’m in agreement with ya, get Revis, multiple draft picks if need be along the lines of what Seattle gave for Harvin. But Revis totally changes the way you can play defense, also practicing against him can only make the wr & Qb better, or show their total lack of competence. No team is one player away from the SB, everyone must play games and in the NFL anyone can beat anyone on any given Sunday. Most games are decided on 1 or 2 plays. So 1 or 2 players can make your team better to the point the playoffs are a possiblity, and from there who knows.While the goal for every team is SB only 2 every year make it, so to consider the season a waste if you don’t is kind of unrealistic. I do believe were just a few plays away form the playoffs last year, as miserable as we looked at times, it’s mostly about who gets hot at the right time. I look forward to a good season, a run at the playoffs, and maybe the Super Bowl.

    The fact Revis is coming off an injury, it’s only reasonable to make the trade, but with conditions for next year’s draft. If he plays up to expectations, the Jets get our #1 in 2014. If Revis doesn’t play up to par, get hurts etc. the compensation is less.

  12. Pewter_Power Says:

    @SteveK
    I agree. If we had Revis (or just better corners period) we are at least 11-5 last year and could’ve made some noise in the playoffs. Bottom line is we fix our corner position and we can play with anybody in the league.

  13. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    All Dom needs to do is give extensions to:

    QB-Josh Freeman
    WR-Mike Williams

    Convince Ronde Barber to come back one more years(To play the slot)

    *Draft well (Since we have a bunch of XCollege coaches on our staff) +
    With the new addition of Director of College Scouting Mr. Eric Stokes. Our West Coast division of the scouting department will be greatly improved

    Pick up some a few promising prospects UDFA

    Grab a few June 1st cuts

    Rollover the extra cap space into 2014: And sign Revis or whoever we want at that time.

    Make a it to the Dance in 2013 (were anything can happen)

    Remember: Neither Baltimore or San Francisco started an a former or current Allpro at corner. One guy doesn’t make a team.

    GO BUCS! 1976-to-Infinity

  14. stevek Says:

    @LUVMYBUCS,

    San Francisco had some good secondary players, their CBs run circles around ours.

    Eric Wright can’t stop screwing up… Poor guy is his own worst enemy. I hope he can get it straight, he has potential, but needs to revert from that 10 cent head.

  15. MTM Says:

    If the Pop Star trades a 1st & 3rd this year for Revis with so many corner backs in the draft. It would be admitting that he does not draft well. Revis has not even went through a full practice. Its also concerning that no other team is interested.

  16. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @stevek

    Carlos Rogers-Is the only corner back on that team that’s worth being mentioned as an above average corner. And for some odd reason he’s being mentioned as a potential June 1st cut. Couple years back he was a free agent steal.

    But the rest are NOTHING TO BRAG ABOUT (Please review the round they were drafted)

    (Tarell Brown) 2007:5th Rnd, 147th by SF

    (Tramaine Brock) UDFA-Brock was signed by the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent following the 2010 NFL Draft. He was released on September 15 and re-signed to the team’s practice squad. He was promoted to the active roster on September 20.He was waived on October 12 and re-signed to the team’s practice squad. He was promoted to the active roster on October 27, 2010.

    *THE 49ER’S FRONT 7 SEVEN IS THE KEY TO THAT DEFENSE

  17. zam Says:

    He’s only 27. “one player away” makes no difference if you bring him in and sign him to a long-term extension. The Bucs in 3 years may very well be one player away, and wish they could go in the wayback machine and sign him now.
