Bucs, Ravens Like Leeman Bennett’s Guy

April 10th, 2013

It looks like the New Schiano Order and Leeman Bennett are on the same page.

Back in January, Joe chatted with Bennett, the former successful Falcons head coach and not-so-successful Bucs head coach, and asked him to name standouts from his East-West Shrine Game experience. Bennett coached the West squad this year.

Only one name came out of Bennett’s mouth, Keith Pough, a strong-side linebacker prospect out of Howard University.

Bennett said Pough (6-2, 241) is a complete, physical player who quickly showed he was a leader on the field and in the locker room. Pough is projected to be a mid-round draft pick, but his 4.87 40-yard dash time at the NFL Scouting Combine, and playing in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference against the likes of Morgan State, Savannah State and Delaware State, won’t help him.

Now, via draft guru Justin “The Commish” Pawlowski of 98.7 FM, it seems the Bucs and Ravens are showing the most interest in Pough. Pawlowski Twittered that he talked to Pough yesterday and Pough gave him the scoop.

Pough seems to have the makings of the proverbial “Buccaneer Man.” He was a two-year captain at Howard and is the son of a high school football coach. Being a late physical bloomer factored into his college options, per Joe’s research.

Somebody has to replace Quincy Black, and preferably someone with more upside than Jonathan Casillas. Maybe that’s Pough.

    Casillas is 100% a Weak side LB and will backup Lavonte David and may help in coverage on nickel. He gets blown up on blocks and uses speed to pursue.

  2. 4everBucsFan Says:

    The secret is out now!

  3. Zack Says:

    jvato24 is dead on about Cassilas, he’s a nickel linebacker and WLB depth. There are some pretty good SLB prospects in this draft. Sio Moore is a monster who can do everything, and Devonte Halloman, Jamie Collins and Pough show some potential as well.

  4. Jeagan1999 Says:

    Some really great players have come out of “small” schools and conferences…I wouldn’t hold that against the guy. Remember, it’s the size of the fight in the dog, not the size of the dog in the fight…metaphorically speaking, of course!!

  5. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Zack

    We need more Impact players. And SIO MOORE is the only guy IMO we can’t leave the 2013 draft without. The Dude is a beast. On our base downs Lavonte David at Will & SIO MOORE at Strong would be lights out. And them 2 roaming the middle on nickels down; along with Barber(If he returns) Dashon Goldson & Mark Barron….Wow….(.LAVONTE DAVID & SIO MOORE) TOGETHER WILL BE COMPARABLE TO (PATRICK WILLIS & NAVORRO BOWMAN)

    With the re-signing of Wright by the alleged rock star, can we drop the silly “Buccaneer Man” references. If the Buccaneer Man, as described to us last year, was truly so important, then Wright would have been released. Frankly, I’m fine with him being back, it’s just the whole Buc Man thing is dumb.

  7. Mr. Patrick Says:

    Casillas also excels an special teams. Can’t forget about those guys.

  8. Andrew 1 Says:

    eh, solid player but not a standout by any means. I dont think I would put him ahead of Quincy in terms of talent wise. but Im sure the bucs know more about him than me.

  9. Andrew 1 Says:

    could be a really good special teams player. but a starter, Im not so sure.

  10. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    I’ll never forget an interview Mason Foster had last year. When asked about Lavonte David he said the dude is a beast WE NEED MORE LIKE him. IMO Sio Moore is the only fits that mold.

    Pough is solid.

    Like A.J. Klein overall playmaking ability, and Vince Williams upside more though. Will never forget that smack that Vince Williams put down on that guard at the senior bowl practice.

    i dont know much about Sio Moore, but from what I got watching some of his film is that hes pretty good LB. Def more of a playmaker than Pough. the only reason why I dont think the bucs will get him is because the bucs, for some odd reason, just love those smaller, undersized, quick LBs and Moore is more of one of those big, strong not as athletic type of LBs that we usually shy away from. plus given that he is used to playing his hand in the dirt I think he would be a perfect fit in the 3-4 defense.

    Im glad you brought him to my attention though because with the bucs you just never know we could end up taking him. Its good to see another fellow bucs fan as excited about LBs as I am.

    YES. Sio Moore is one of my favorite players in this draft, dude is a legit pass rusher too. If the Bucs are married to this blitz heavy scheme, they need to bring in a player who can get after the QB the way Moore can. Rockstar needs to do whatever it takes to land this guy.

    Id like to see bucs draft a natural mlb arthur brown would be my 1st choice and move foster to strong side

  16. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @ Andrew 1

    True Moore did play with his hand in the dirt on some plays. That just shows the kids versatility. If you go back in watch the NC state Tape. Watch how fluid he drops into transition on the back half of the coverage(you’ll see some press man 2).

    He runs a 4.6 (40) so has plenty of speed for the position. And weights just as much as Mason Foster,Najee Goode, Dekoda Watson and Adam Hayward.

  17. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @passenger 27

    Luv Brown, but all indication is that; this kid will get drafted in the 3rd half of the 1st round.

  18. TrueBlue Says:

    3rd half of the 1st round????

  19. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Yeah you’ll here that sometime

    Picks 1-10 (1st half)
    Picks 11-21 (2nd half)
    Picks 22-32 (3rd half)

    Oh wow, I HEAR you… 50%+50%+50% =100%

    Pough ran himself out of contention with a 40 that was closer to 4.9 than the sub 4.7 the Bucs have on their roster. They want their LBs to be able to fly and Pough can’t do it.

    One thing Pough does have, is a mouth and some attitude. He might turn out to be a pretty good player, it just won’t be with the Bucs.

    Sio Moore, very athletic and productive, Jamie Collins, ditto, Khaseem Greene, definitely.

    @Brandon

    Check out ILB prospect A.J Klein (Leonard Johnson former Cyclone’s teammate)
    Cyclones coach Paul Rhoads(One of the most underrated coaches in college football) . Has fielded some pretty good complicated defenses + he’s pretty good friends with Coach Schiano.

    @ LUVMYBUCS

    the one player Im so glad you informed me about is Vince Williams. I went back and watched some of his film and… BINGO!!!! thats the kind of LB I like to see. he big, fast, but most importantly hes decisive and a pretty good tackler. hes got attitude and great instincts that you love to see in a LB. I expect big things from. I really, really hope we draft him.

  24. Andrew 1 Says:

    he would make a great SLB for the bucs

  25. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Andrew 1

    Yeah, I really think we need more kids that have great instincts,temperament and toughness(FOOTBALL PLAYERS). And he we will make a nice pickup in the 5th or 6th Round.

  26. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ LUVMYBUCS

    i wanted to ask you something since your pretty knowledgeable when it comes to LBs. what ever happened to Tank Carder from TCU? the guy was an EXCELLENT football player and yet i have not heard one word about him. its almost like hes being shunned or something. its weird but I get the feeling no one in football circles even knows or cares about this great LB. I was he hoping he would be a buc.

  27. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Tanks with Cleveland. With new Defensive Coordinator Ray Horton & LB Coach Ken Flajole (Hated this guy when he was with Carolina). Tank will find his way-Just gotta stay healthy

  28. Andrew 1 Says:

    wow, I really thought there was more to this guy than what everyone else saw. I guess I was wrong. looks like hes just another average LB.

  29. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Andrew 1

    Depends on the type of system you utilize a guy in sometime. And some guys catch on at different speeds. I mean look at our very own Shelton Quarles; it took him awhile to put it all together.

  30. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ LUVMYBUCS

    thats a good point. Shelton Quarles is one of my favorite bucs of all time btw. I really appreciated the kind of player he was. even though he is often overlooked he did a lot of good things for us.

  31. Buc Wilder Says:

    Great prospect- he would definitely be bring it at the strong side. Good job getting the word out on this guy, Joe. He’s been on my board for awhile
