Is Carson Palmer Yearning To Join Bucs?

April 1st, 2013

What quarterback wouldn’t want to come to Tampa for a chance to throw jump-ball bombs to Vincent Jackson and Mike Williams, handoff to Doug Martin, and drop back behind a behemoth, veteran offensive line?

It seems soon-to-be-jettisoned Raiders quarterback Carson Palmer wants to do just that. Per BSPN, NFL insider Adam Schefter, Palmer is yearning to be Tampa Bay’s 1A option.

@AdamSchefter – Those who know soon-to-be former Raiders QB Carson Palmer believe he was hoping to wind in Tampa Bay with Bucs. Doesn’t look that way now.
.
This morning, olive oil-lappingpopcorn-munchingcoffee-slurpingfried-chicken-eatingoatmeal-lovingcircle-jerkingbeer-chuggingcricket-watchingscone-loathingcollege football-naïve, baseball-box-score-reading Peter King of SI.com and NBC Sports fame, claimed Palmer is a shoe-in to be traded to Arizona for possibly a fourth- or fifth-round pick and that the Cardinals will restructure Palmer’s contract.
.
Is it possible Palmer doesn’t want to start in Arizona and would prefer a more comfortable job with a more dangerous team like the Bucs? Perhaps Palmer is eager to take on the grueling New Schiano Order conditioning tests when the Bucs report back to Tampa in two weeks.
.
Regardless, as Joe’s written previously, Joe’s not sure Josh Freeman has the mental fortitude with a capable, veteran backup breathing down his neck. Joe also remembers the boos raining down on Freeman during home games last season. Those don’t need to turn into Palmer chants. Not this season.

I don’t see why ANY qb would want to play behind that cardinals line.

One thing about Palmer is when he is kept upright he can still sling it. Prob better than Free, and is certainly more accomplished. You just KNOW he’d be lighting it up in practice launching bombs to VJAX. There may even be pressure to start him. I just don’t see Freeman rising up to that. I could be wrong, but that’d be a huge indictment on Freeman if that’s legit concern. If that prohibits the Bucs from signing amore than capable “backup,” then that is really unfortunate.

  4. Macabee Says:

Why Carson Palmer to the Bucs – for one it makes sense! There are several factors at work here – made all the more complicated by the purported Revis trade.

Let’s assume the Revis trade goes through and with the deal on the table today, we give our 2014 1st and 2nd draft picks. What if Freeman fails? What if Freeman excels and hits the FA market? In either scenario, if Freeman walks or we decide to go in another direction, the 2014 draft will not be an alternative.

Moreover, if we’re going to let Freeman roll out and throw on the run more, what if he gets hurt?

Our offense depends on the long ball. Palmer can throw the long ball and is more accurate than Freeman. Palmer has proven in Cincinnati and Oakland that he is not the long-term solution. But short-term, he provides a lot of insurance and buys the response time the Bucs will need if Freeman is no longer here.

Then there are the intangibles like experience and leadership that could prove beneficial to a still developing Freeman. If there’s a chance to get him, I think it would be a good move!

  5. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

To go after Palmer, is for Tampa to admit it made a mistake with Freeman.
    Not likely!

  6. T in Orlando Says:

    @ Chris

Depending on how much Palmer is willing to sign for in Tampa, I may disagree with your statement.

If Palmer were willing to a 1 or 2-yr deal for $4 mil a year or less, then I don’t think that the team is admitting “making a mistake”, as that’s a good value for a proven qb, that would be arguably the best back-up qb in the league, and at that price, Freeman would be the starter to open up camp. Macabee makes great points on why Palmer as back-up would make sense.

Much more than that, such as his current $10 million for this year, then yes he would be brought it to compete as a starter, and that would show the Bucs Brass doesn’t have complete faith in Freeman this year.

  7. NJBucsFan Says:

I posted this on the previous story before this came up…

All this Palmer talk is making me nervous….

There is no need to trade for an older and more expensive QB that is equal to Freeman. At least Freeman has the upside of youth on his side. Plus any trading of picks could shake up the apple cart for the Revis trade.

  8. 4everBucsFan Says:

“DO or DIE” ….Freeman’s last stand. He doesn’t need competition. He needs everyone’s blessing in what is his last audition for a large contract next year. He needs all the tools and confidence available. If he fails with all the support around him then we move on. It’s his job to lose.

  9. stevek Says:

As long as we make the playoffs in 2013!

  10. Meh Says:

I don’t care about Freeman’s mental fortitude. I care about having the best QB on the field. Are we really talking about passing on a QB because he might be better than our starter? Really?

  11. zam Says:

I remember last year saying the Bucs should throw their hat in the ring for Peyton Manning, and let Josh learn from the great one. That could have been a fantastic transition in a couple years.

As it stands, if Freeman’s psyche can’t handle the adversity of an understudy, how will he ever be able to win under the pressure of a playoff game?

  12. Saskbuco Says:

@CannuckBuc and @CanadianBucsFan we need to find more Canadian Bucs fans and get them on here, you both make great posts and don’t know any bucs fans at all, need to get a Canadian Bucs fans group going. The red and white need to rock the pewter!!!!!!

I still like Palmer, always been a fan but I wouldn’t like to see him in Tampa. He hasn’t been the same since his elbow issues and he throws a lot of INTs as well. However if they are looking to push Free like they have been saying than this becomes very intriguing, look what Palmer did against out Putrid secondary last year, no doubt a gun slinger. Was just hoping if a VET was to come in, would be more of non-turnover machine. As always let the front office make the moves and ill simply speculate my opinion. For the overall greater good I hope Bucs pass on Palmer, even though I think there is less than 1% chance he comes here, he will start for AZ. What does Bucsnation think??

  13. thegregwitul Says:

If I hear Buc fans chanting for Palmer, I might have to drive from my residence in Buffalo all the way to the Bay to jump off that bridge I read about in the comment section from time to time.

I’m all for Palmer as a backup and I don’t think it would hurt to have Freeman pushed. If Josh doesn’t have the mental strength to hold off a QB that isn’t as talented as he is, we might as well begin planning on drafting/signing a new potential franchise QB in 2014.

One more thing; Joe, I have to say, I LOVE the intro you write whenever you mention Peter King. It’s part of the charm of your website, along with working Buc Nation into a frenzy with the Rockstar nickname. Keep up the good work!

  14. the_buc_realist Says:

correct me if i am wrong, but didn’t Carson Palmer take the Bangles to a Playoffs when he was 24. I think it was 2005 when he won the division.

  15. Vic66 Says:

The Jets learned a lot about Sanchez last year when he couldn’t handle Tebow sitting on the bench. They never entended on playing him and Sanchez played like sh**. Yes Josh is a head case, but we want to win and go to the playoffs. It’s not about how much money he can make. It’s time to bring in a backup that can take over and win if Josh goes out. If he can’t take competition than he is not the QT we need in our future.

  16. AmbushBuc Says:

Palmer is a more accurate, older version of Freeman. Why the hell would I want two Freemans on the team when one is already too may?

  17. BucFan20 Says:

Once again with the Poor little Freeman comments. If anyone thinks he is so scared of a qulified QB as a backup that could push him then that proves what most of us say. We already know how he will panic under pressure on the field. Now you worry because you think he would panic with competition. from a quality backup. . So OMG don’t bring anyone in who could hurt his feelings and give him a run for his money. This would be the PERFECT time to do it. Put the pressure behind him this year to make him show all he has to get it done under any kind of pressure to keep his job as a Pro. Even being pressured by a backup QB. Prove your THE BEST! Or so long from the Sunshine State.

  18. BucFan20 Says:

You just said it yourself. ACCURATE!

  19. Walter Says:

I want Palmer, not because I think he’s better than Freeman, but because I believe Freeman CAN handle the pressure and WILL lead us to the playoffs this year. And if he can’t, then we know that he isn’t the answer, and we all know Palmer can still play some ball, so he’d win us some games if Freeman fails. I think Freeman will shine though.

  20. Buc Fan #238 Says:

Palmer for the 4th round pick we got from Talib… if he restructures to a 5 year veteran/retirement/QB coach deal.

THAT would be worth that 4th rounder.

  21. Bobby Says:

NOBODY, other than the posters here, have said the Bucs would pass on Palmer because it would spook Freeman. I think if the money was right they would sign him in a heartbeat. This is a business and it’s about putting yourself in position to win. Palmer would would be a step in the right direction. Good mentor for Freeman and good backup QB.

  22. BirdDoggers Says:

Bringing in Palmer would only create more problems. Palmer was never the same after the knee injury and has a knack for throwing INTs. Freeman is much younger and has more potential at this point. Freeman needs at least one more year before a QB controversy is created.

  23. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

Freeman went in the tank last year, WITH, all the support. I want him to succeed, but, if he can’t handle a talented backup, then, how good can he really be?

I am also in fear of being one injury from Orlovsky leading the team for an extended period.

  24. 4everBucsFan Says:

You guys are fools. Anyone clamoring for Palmer and who think he’s that great, why isn’t he a franchise QB for a team? Instead of bouncing around from one city to another, why isn’t he part of a building process? You know why? Cause he is finished. I doubt he could beat out Orlovsky for the backup position. It’s a good thing we don’t run this team on fan participation only, because most you guys suck as far as recognizing talent.

  25. Vorblaw Says:

If Freeman can’t handle competition then we don’t need Freeman. Plain and simple.

  26. SilenceTheCritics Says:

Signing Palmer would not create a QB controversy. There is no way they would bring him in to be the starter. That is Freemans job to lose. Quit coddling the man who makes millions of dollars to perform in games… If he cant handle the pressure of a competent back up, he needs to be gone already.

  27. Nick2 Says:

I wish the reason we were not getting Palmer was because it might make Freeman implode but I think unfortunately its more about his potential salary. The chances that Freeman implodes this year as he did last year is 50/50 in my opinion. We have enough offensive talent that Carson Palmer could easily step in and do well. I am guessing instead we will have a Dan Orlovsky or some version of him instead. Competition at quarterback? I think Schiano wants it but unfortunately unless we draft Matt Barkley I don’t see it happening. And Matt Flynn was had for a 5th rounder and conditional pick next year. Yes Dom is all in with Freeman so its sink or swim now rockstar!!!!!

  28. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

Palmer would kill Orlovsky in a competition. Now THAT’S funny. Talk about fools…..

  29. TampaTony Says:

Wow 4everBucsFan says Palmer couldnt beat out Orlovsky and then says people are fools and suck at recognizing talent…. Gotta love the irony in that.
    LMAO

I’m not a a huge fan of Palmer but its obvious to anyone why the guy has had some issues considering the two teams he has beenduring his career are probably the 2 worst run organizations in the NFL. Palmer is the type of QB that can do VERY well with a good oline and weapons around him. Look at his numbers in Cinci when they had a good team… Its a fact. The guy can play. And his numbers last year are copmarable to Freemans and he was on the Raiders who had a new coach, staff and are just a mess in general and he had NO help. Terrible oline, terrible WR’s and no running game.

I hope Freeman gets it together this year and is the future but thats 50/50 and if he comes out the start of the year and looks like garbage I wouldnt mind seeing what Palmer can do with this offense considering what he did last year on a terrible Raiders team. I would almost bet he would lite it up because this offense is set and ready to go, its built, just waiting on a QB to show up. Freeman is great at times and just awful at times.

  30. Mr Lucky Says:

Of course Palmer would rather come to Tampa over Arizona – who is in their right mind would want to be in Arizona.

As for Oakland – they are the Browns of the West Coast!

  31. dr j Says:

If he comes here accepting a back up role (and pay cut)- why not! Depth at QB is always good to have!

  32. Adam Says:

It’s so funny to me that the presence of a veteran QB might “rattle” Josh Freeman. Wow… it’s bad enough he’s worrying about the other team, now we’re worrying about the guys in the same colored jersey?

If this is the case, it goes to prove what I’ve been saying for 2 years:

    JOSH

    FREEMAN

    IS

    SOFT.

There’s no other word for it. He’s SOFT. He’s a coddled, pampered-and-pink marshmallow with a Jheri curl.
