Bucs Make Move To Secure Offensive Line

March 28th, 2013

demar dotson 2

OK, you Bucs fans who have been tossing lamps against the wall at home and drop-kicking the cat because Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik hasn’t made many moves since signing safety Dashon Goldson, your day has been made.

In the shadows of the inner-workings of the NFL, it seems the Bucs made a move to secure their offensive line for the near future.

It appears Demar Dotson got a contract extension.

Per someone by the Twitter moniker of @Jason_OTC, he noticed NFLPA records that shows Dotson is on the books for the next three years.

@Jason_OTC: Not sure if I just completely missed this the other day or not but it looks the #Buccaneers signed T Demar Dotson to a 3 year extension … Per NFLPA records base salaries for Dotson are $1 mil in 2013, 1.25 in 2014, 1.5 in 2015, and 1.75 in 2016

Per Rotoworld.com, Dotson was about to enter the final year of his two-year contract.

So Bucs fans can quit hollering about filling a hole on the offensive line. That hole has now been filled.

See, Dominik is doing something.

This is awesome for all the people screaming we “need” and upgrade at RT.

  2. raphael Says:

Whoaaaa ! glad i was sitting down for this one..I almost fell over with excitement ..:)

  3. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

He is one big dude, and IMHO is a big improvement over Jeremy Trueblood, who left.
LOL, now we will have to keep Josh Freeman! He is one of the few QB’s tall enough to see over Dotson.

  4. flmike Says:

He improved with every game last season, he’s a great athlete for a man his size.

  5. Capt. Tim Says:

Personally, I thought Dotson played fairly well for a first year starter. He is huge and surprisingly agile.

Who is the Backup LT and RT? So sick of being on injury away from a collapse

  6. Bucs or gtfo Says:

This happened a few days ago? Jeez the bucs are secretive.

  7. tampabaybucfan Says:

Shows that Dom is not desperate for positive publicity. He has a plan and is working it. It may be sort of a “rope-a-dope”….so, don’t be a dope….be patient. We will have our CBs and DT & probably a few pleasant suprises before the season starts.
    BE PATIENT!!!

  9. ElioT Says:

There is still a “need” if not for a starter but now for depth.

I always thought of Dotson as a good back-up and not so much a starter. I guess we’ll see.

The Bucs still need to make some moves in the trenches. IMO you can’t have enough depth on the lines and we always seem to be one injury away from f***ing up the whole plan.

    Go Bucs!!!

  10. Joe Says:

    ElioT:

There is still a “need” if not for a starter but now for depth.

    Agree.

  11. jktampa Says:

Makes me want to run out and buy tickets…said no one.

  12. Legarrettes Blunt Says:

well this answers my question about how the Bucs brass feels about Dotson. However like @Capt. Tim said I am sick of being one injury away from collapse. We need to build depth so that god forbid Donald Penn or Dotson go down we wont be screwed.

  13. Macabee Says:

    Capt. Tim,

With Joseph returning, Jamon Meredith goes back to back-up tackle duty. That is unless the scuttlebutt from the hacked Dominik/Nix phone conversation is true and that he is on the trade block!

  14. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

@Legarrettes Blunt, you are absolutely correct!
The NFC South is a violent place, with several teams that flat out do not like Tampa. I have seen evidence several times of dirty play from our NFC South opponents. There was little doubt in my mind they were not just trying to beat us, but to hurt our players as well.
    Especially Carolina!
New Orleans mellowed a little, because the heat was on them, but injuries to our starters are a very real possibility.
We must be prepared for this.

  15. Jacko101 Says:

This is good but it doesn’t make us Superbowl contenders.

  16. Westcoastbucsfans Says:

I don’t think the team “collapsed” when Davin Joseph went down. They also didn’t “collapse” when Carl Nicks went down. We are not one injury away from a collapse. Bostad is awesome and will have the backups ready to go. Just like last year.

  17. kh Says:

ya agree – need to sign/draft some competition for Dotson still, he’s serviceable but that’s about it.

  18. Brad Says:

This move creates about as much excitement as a visit to the dentist . Big friggin deal.

  19. DjoshFreeman Says:

Doug Martin almost set the Buc rushing record as a rookie.our o line had injuries but was never a problem and never “blew” the season losing two all pro linemen.what “blew” our season was our secondary.duh! O lineman depth can come from anywhere and isn’t a prime concern considering we lost who trueblood? Guess what, nicks and Joseph didnt play last year and they’re coming back so our “depth” started games last year and did just fine.bennett’s injury and dotson’s signing are obvious examples that Dom and Shiano kno what they are doing but dont want “us” as fans or the public to kno about.i say thank you #frontoffice for actually making some solid moves while you get no love…

  20. BucNasty!! Says:

I don’t get it this is mind boggling merideth an Larson aren’t depth? I mean u “start” how many games an do a adequate job yet your not worthy enough to b depth? I’m done reading user post I’m only reading comments from joe for now on its two many 1st year football watchers, trolls ,and ppl who just like to click send to start a conversation because u can’t retort to yourself. Te bucs will b fine mark my words we will b n the dance an where u go from there depends on how hot or consistent u are. So until then walk wit us or walk the plank BUC IT IM OUT

  21. Capt. Tim Says:

Westcoastbucsfan- no! You are absolutely right! Joseph and Nicks went down, and we didn’t collapse!! We replaced them with talented players- lead the league in Rushing! Win the NFC south, went on to win the SuperBowl- aand all of our players went to the Probowl!!! Yay

    O-Kay WC?

Christ! You are at least vaguely aware that we finished in LAST PLACE, aren’t you?? Is there some ” secret basement level” that I am unaware of, that is somehow worse than LAST PLACE?? Isn’t LAST PLACE the worst possible place to end? Doesn’t it mean a failure and collapse on all levels
Doesn’t LAST PLACE mean every other team is better than you??

Now, what does it say about your”Great Plans” when you ALWAYS finish in LAST PLACE?? Does this call for Patience, standing pat, or sticking with what you’ve been doing????

The very WORST, for a LONG TIME!!

You live in California, don’t ya?

  22. Ruggyup Says:

I had no idea Dotson was held in such high regard. Previous discussions, latest re “Chief’s Winston” were not nearly as kind to Dotson. Are we saying the same things that came out during last season. Please tell me I’m on the wrong page and this guy is a prize possession and at only $1 million+ per year. Awesome.

  23. Mitch Says:

Three out of four teams in the nfc south went 7-9 last year so I’m not exactly worried about finishing in last place this past year. Just want to see development and improvement in young players paired with more wins!! If there’s one thing I noticed Dominik and schiano calculate every move they make to the roster. I’m sure there is a very good reason for every move they have and have not made so far this offseason. Just relax Man! Football’s still five months away & the change the bucs need will happen before week one! No doubt

  24. Westcoastbucsfans Says:

    @timmy

You are an excellent guesser, I am in California.

As far as your “last place” rant is concerned, it is exaggerated tremendously. We were last in the DIVISION. Even then, we were only technically in last place as two other teams finished with the SAME EXACT RECORD.

We hold the 13th pick in the draft. Do you what that means? It means there had to be TWELVE TEAMS that did worse than us. So yes, there is a worse level than last in the division, its called holding the first pick in the draft.

Doom and gloom from a grumpy old man. (at least that’s what it sounds like). You probably won’t have anything to say when the Bucs are in the playoffs. Maybe you can still complain about last year then too. I’m surprised you’re not still complaining about our first two winless seasons in the 70’s.

    MOVE ON.

  25. CC Says:

I lost my patience with this team. Bucs fans and media should be demandong an upgrade from last place.

  26. teacherman777 Says:

Smart move. He is a great athlete. Former bball player.

He is cheap. Which will help average out the salaries of Penn, Joseph, and Nicks. Those 3 dudes are very well paid. So we must be smart with our other linemans salaries.

I like Dotson. He played ok for basically a college junior. It was only his 3rd season playing football. He will develop with our badass o-line coach.

Solid signing. Very cheap for a starting OT.

  27. bucobruce Says:

BUCS 11-5 this season. What does everyone else say.Dom will shock us soon just wait!!!!!!!!!!

  28. ShutTheBucUp Says:

11-5? LOL. Lets run down some of the high powered offenses we’ll be facing. New England, Atlanta (twice), New Orleans (twice), San Fran, Seattle, Detroit… Unless we drastically improve our defense we’re more likely to go 5-11.

  29. bucobruce Says:

What wil most of you say when the Bucs do go 11-5 or 10-6 and get in the playoffs.

  30. Vic66 Says:

@Brad>. You sound like you would bitch and complain if you got hung with a brand-new rope!

If Dotson is good enough to be a starter, did he get low balled?

  31. DjoshFreeman Says:

We went 7-9 with the worst pass d in the league.we lost who Roy miller? and gained a new slot wr, new safety, and haven’t even drafted yet.and people are saying 5-11? So improving our team makes us worse?! We’re way better off than last year guys so by transitive property we must improve our record this year.11-5! Absolutely possible

  32. ShutTheBucUp Says:

We had a pretty soft schedule last year and a fresh-faced offense. This year other teams will be gameplanning for Martin and bombs to Vjax. As things stand right now, our pass defense still sucks, Freeman is still Freeman, and our schedule is twice as difficult. I sure hope we go 11-5, but as of right now I’m pretty pessimistic.

  33. DjoshFreeman Says:

    @Shutthebucup
Gameplan for vjackson? He’s been doing the same thing since he came in the league=catch deep balls, so idk how all of a sudden teams are going to gameplan for that.and you contradict yourself.is freeman freeman or is he good? If he was so bad, wouldn’t teams have gameplaned for Martin last year? He Seemed to be our only consistent offensive threat.yet vjackson still produced with freeman.so basically a gameplan to stop us is what, stop our whole team? Our team is already BETTER than last year because nicks and Joseph are back on o-line answer got clayborn back on d.add that with goldson and I see an improvement on a 7-9 record, not us going worse.

  34. bucobruce Says:

Djoshfreeman right on man.I have been saying this all off season, look at all the new players we are getting this year compared to last year, all those injured probowlers and goldson .Our hole offence line are almost all probowlers plus a draft plus Dom will make anouther move or two, shoot im talking myself into a BUCS superbowl.

  35. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I swear, if I ever want to feel depressed, all I have to do is read the comments on JBF. Can’t that all wait until we lose our first game? I don’t understand why you would be a fan of a team, yet spend all of your free time complaining about it. What’s the purpose? Doesn’t it make you miserable? I’m not telling you to pick another team, because you have the right to do whatever you want, but I struggle to understand how that could possibly make you happy (or do you just love being miserable?). Hell, this is the one time of year when we are tied with everyone else.

We are going to spend the money (by CBA rules). We are going to draft players and bring in more players. Many are screaming for depth, yet we don’t even have all our starters in place yet. Normally you build depth around your starters, not the other way around. It’s not even April yet!!!!! For those asking where is the depth on the OL, I challenge you to name me one backup OL for any other team than the Bucs (without using Google). Point is, backup OL aren’t household names. Unless you’ve been to every practice and game, and have access to coaches film, you don’t have a clue. Everyone just needs to chill out for a little while and let the big boys do their job. I promise you this, no one from the Bucs is going to call you and ask you what you think they should do.

  36. Brandon Says:

This is big and it’s a great deal for the team. Dotson was a huge upgrade over Trueblood. He is already good as a pass protector, perhaps below average as a run blocker, but he is improving.

The funny thing is that Dotson appears tailor made for the LT spot… and Penn seems better suited for RT. Perhaps the switch will happen now that they will be together for the next four years.

  37. bucobruce Says:

Thank you Hawaiian buc!!!!!!!!!!GO BUCS SUPER BOWL

  38. bucobruce Says:

All you haters should go on joefalconfan.com

  39. Westcoastbucsfans Says:

You got it HawaiianBuc. You just can’t judge an offseason on a few weeks of free agency. Critique all you want after but not in the middle (actually the beginning) of an offseason.

  40. Adam L. Says:

I’m so happy I just crapped myself.

  41. DjoshFreeman Says:

    @hawaiinbuc

    Mahalo brah!

  42. Dave Says:

Depth. I still see a RT drafted in the mid rounds or a FA picked up.
Odds are it wil not be a “name”

When are Bucs fans gong to larn most big name FA signings do not work out?
The Bucs hit on 2 last year. Hopefully they hit on Goldston this year. I have no problem with them signing nothing but “B” Level guys here on out because even that impoves the CB play.

I would rather they get Revis locked up for 4-5 for 9-10 mill per, but if not, they will still be better.

  43. Stevek Says:

    Hawaiian,

You’re right, you’re right. Patience is a virtue, one that this Arab West Virginian lacks. From one Buc die hard to another, we need to sh!t or get off the pot in regards to moves.

This move has a ton of balls (all of the non-moves), and as much as I want to like it, instinctually, It smells like it has: disaster, disappointment, and phucked up written all over it.

I am hoping for a few random pulls, surprises, and the gem (Revis) to end up in Pewter.

We had such a BEAST offseason last year, that this has been like warm sh!t in your stocking on Xmas morning, just not fun.

I have limited faith because the Redskins have done something: beat us in our last playoff game, inherited our “scraps” (Bruce Allen and Raheem Morris, almost Tanard, and now Biggers), and went back to the playoffs last year.

Losing hurts, but losing to Dan Snyder is down right pitiful.

  44. Machiavellii Says:

Hey everyone here is a great link to keep an eye out on any new players signed and cap hits.. Hope you like it..

  45. Capt. Tim Says:

West coast- let me guess again- San Francisco?

  46. Hawaiian Buc Says:

There’s nothing more ignorant and childish than criticizing or insinuating something based on where someone lives. As if you living wherever you live makes you better than someone else.

  47. CC Says:

Lasg time I checked our defense sucked. And it still does.

  48. Westcoastbucsfans Says:

I don’t mind Hawaiian Buc. (Even though you make a valid point). I actually live in Fresno. (Which might explain my football obsession a little, there is nothing here, haha). I grew up in Tampa though, was living there when they won the Super Bowl.

If it’s any consolation, I have been to San Francisco.

I also like that you have no retort to my post. Only to guess where I live, haha. Guess I got you pretty good. No other rants about being the worst now that you probably realize that’s a terrible argument? Maybe you could comment on some possible draft choices? Or is that not negative enough to be worth your time? I was just discussing the possibility of Tavon Austin with the first pick on Bucs Nation. (Purely to keep him from the Panthers.

  49. Hawaiian Buc Says:

He’s not going to talk about draft choices, because he’s going to want to complain after whomever we draft. That’s a common theme around JBF. If Austin truly is Percy Harvin without the headache (pun intended), then I would love that pick. To be completely honest, I’ve never really seen him play aside from highlights. But I’m a firm believer in drafting the BPA, so I would have no problem with that pick.

  50. Hawaiian Buc Says:

And I’ve been to SF too, really cool city. We all know what he was trying to ensenuate, but that’s just the ignorance and insecurity talking. Can’t fix that.

  51. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

Same here, only seen highlights. Taking him with the first pick though, would serve the dual purpose of adding a game changer for our offense and not letting the Panthers get a game changer. (Which I am a little more worried about).

SF is pretty cool. I have been to New York, San Antonio, San Diego etc. I have not really been to a place quite like SF to date. Its unique.

Oh yes, and you can’t fix stupid…

  52. MadMax Says:

Yo WestCoast, my girl has family in Visalia, we’re planning on going out there next year….we’ll have to meet up and jam on some tunes….show me that set up of yours 🙂

  53. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

Im not sure what you mean by that “set up” of mine but I am game to hang out with a Bucs fan any day. They are few and far between out here. I see more Panther fans (yuck) in the bars on game day then I do Bucs fans. Not to mention the Raider fans. You know what the first thing out of every last one of their mouths is? How we cheated to win that Super Bowl. I have gotten in so many random arguments just for wearing my Bucs gear, its tiresome, haha. (but worth it.)

  54. MadMax Says:

The “set up” I was referring to goes back to the discussion we had on bucsnation…when we were talking about making music. Maybe you forgot about that convo.

  55. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

No, I am not that same WestCoastBucsFan. I had chosen this name a long time ago but never really commented before. I got into Bucs Nation recently and was disappointed to learn that someone else was using the same name. I ended up choosing the “WestCoastBucFan” on that site (same name just “Buc” instead of “Bucs”). We definitely didn’t have a convo there. Sorry.

On a side note, I have to say, the people on Bucs Nation are WAY more upbeat than most people on this site. Even the the “negative” people aren’t as bad as timmy or kaput is right now. You may want to check that site out Hawaiian Buc if your interested in some optimistic Buc fans. Reassuring to know that not EVERY Buc fan is commenting from the top of building ready to jump.

  56. MadMax Says:

Ahhh, my bad buddy. I thought you were him (unique name)…he’s big into music and so am I. And yes, Bucsnation has a lot of optimistic fans. But we’re not blind to criticism when needed though.
