Bucs-Barber “Check-In” Next Week

March 20th, 2013

Mark Dominik explained Ronde Barber’s status

The mystery surrounding Ronde Barber’s potential return for his 17th season in pewter and red could be settled next week.

Speaking on Sirius XM NFL Radio yesterday, rockstar general manager Mark Dominik said he will soon approach Barber “to see where he’s at.” Dominik and Greg Schiano had a sit-down with Barber early this month before the free agency bell rang, and Barber didn’t accept — or decline, the Bucs’ contract offer to return.

“[Barber] knew we were in the safety market. We told him that we might be going after a safety depending on what all comes free,” Dominik said. “But we wanted him to understand everything beforehand so he wasn’t surprised by anything, that he had all the information. And so Ronde just asked me to give him some time. And just say, ‘Hey look, let me see how everything unfolds. Let me continue to talk to my wife. Let me make a decision on what I want to do. So I told him, ‘Hey, no rush. You’re fine.’ And I’ll probably check back in with him next week to see where he’s at. He can kind of see a little better, you know, example of where everything is.”

Joe wonders what Barber will think of the Darrelle Revis shopping and Barber’s move back to cornerback. Perhaps Barber will be inspired to play within a beastly secondary with studs like Revis and Dashon Goldson, and an up-and-comer like Mark Barron.

It’s been a lot of years, too many years, since Barber was around that kind of talent.

I understand if he doesn’t return. With that being said it will be very hard not to see #20 out there in Pewter and Red. Would love for him to help mentor the young guys.

    @Mikentampa2

To see Ronde is a Diva like his brother is completely asinine. He has been nothing but a complete professional and team player his entire career. I don’t know how any true Bucs fan could even think that let alone wright it!!!!

    Say not see

  4. ShutTheBucUp Says:

There was an article speculating that Ronde could land in Washington (who need safety help) with his old bro Raheem. Man would that ever suck to see Ronde with a Redskins jersey on…

Ronde a diva? Are you even a fan of the Bucs?

  6. Walter Says:

    @ShuttheBucUp

Ronde either plays with the Bucs, or retires. He will never put on another uniform.

  7. Meh Says:

Ronde is about the farthest player from a Diva I can imagine.

  8. Terraj Says:

As sad as it is, Ronde would probably be a starting cornerback for us with our current roster. I love Ronde but damn that’s depressing. If we lose out on Revis and Grimes expect some similar results to last season.

  9. DC Says:

Apparently, skins just signed EJ Biggers. Ahh, he was our only hope!

  10. SirustheVirus Says:

I would like Ronde to come back. This way we at least have Wright(just saying since we haven’t cut him yet) and Barber which isn’t saying much, but there better then what we have in Lewis, Gaitor, Johnson. Someone to look at for CB who I kind of like is Tharold Simon LSU. He could be a late 3rd/4th round guy. I’m not sold on the hype of the top 3 CBs in the draft. Would get a CB in the 2nd,3rd,or 4th before taking one in the 1st round. I belive we will have better CB’s going into the offseason with Revis or with drafting 2 CBs in the draft.

  11. Walter Says:

If we sign Revis, keep Wright, re-sign Ronde, and Draft a corner in the 2nd and 4th rounds, use a 3rd on a nose tackle, let Casillas, Watson, and Heyward fight for the Sam Linebacker position, and use Stocker and Crabtree as blocking tightends who can go out and grab a pass occasionally, our team can make the playoffs this year. And all those moves are very possible.

  12. robert Says:

can’t believe the let biggers walk.

now leonard johnson is our best CB.

leaonard friggin johnson is our best CB. let it sink in.

    ohhhhhh the shame!

  13. robert Says:

Ronde should retire. he has nothing more to prove.

    canton is next.

  14. ShutTheBucUp Says:

i might as well start drinking now to prepare for the onslaught of our secondary next season

  15. robert Says:

    I already started!

  16. 911bucs Says:

@DC if that’s true this is getting frustrating!

  17. Walter Says:

Haha everyone here used to trash on Biggers all the time, now you guys get upset when he isn’t on the team?? The offseason is not even close to being over, everyone needs to relax.

You are a read disgrace to the human race. You certainly are not a Buccaneer Fan.

  19. Neil Says:

Grimes, Eric Wright (reduced salary), and Ronde playing the Nickel……I’d be happy with that. Ronde’s the man, I hope he never retires haha.

  20. robm90 Says:

I would love to see Ronde come back as a nickel back. I don’t think he is a starting corner any longer. While he is still capable of making big plays, he has lost a step and gets burned deep too often.
