Clock Ticking On… The Jets

March 19th, 2013

For Bucs fans who can’t get enough rumors of Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis, Joe can’t stress enough — and has written as much — that the hangup with finishing such a deal is clearly in the lap of Jets general manager John Idzik.

There is simply no way Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik trades a high draft pick for a guy that will likely bolt nine months later. Dominik will need to rework Revis’ contract before a trade is consummated and to date, the Jets have yet to give Dominik permission to do so.

Negotiating with a player from another team is known in NFL circles as “tampering,” and the fines are quite ugly.

Even the New York Post believes the Jets are choking like a dog in these talks with Dominik.

The Buccaneers are losing patience with the Jets, according to league sources, over the teams’ inability to strike a deal for the All-Pro cornerback. The Buccaneers have told people around the league they may have to look at other options at cornerback soon if they can’t make a deal for Revis.

“It’s amazing,” a league source said. “The Jets are going to screw this up.”

There are a lot of corners still on out there for the taking; it’s a great buyer’s market.

Now the New York Post also published what the creator, curator and overall guru of ProFootballTalk.com, the great Mike Florio, reported, that the Bucs have turned their sights on free agent Brent Grimes.

Given how cheap the Bucs can get Grimes in this market, Joe isn’t so sure signing Grimes would prevent the Bucs from still pursuing Revis. And signing Grimes would be a bold statement to Idzik that Dominik isn’t playing around.

Remember, Eric Wright’s contract is still on the books for the Bucs — he would certainly be cut if the Bucs sign Grimes — and is far more than what the Bucs would pay Grimes.

Just like dealing with a car salesman, express the most you’re willing to pay, if they don’t bite, walkaway. If they chase after you before you get to the door, then they’re likely to take your price. If not, then you’re done. You may not get exactly what you want, but at least you won’t over pay for it.

    Exactly!

grimes wright goldson barron is alot better than last years scraps

  4. CC Says:

Signing Grimes would not be a big cap hit. That should definitely get the Jets off their asses to get a deal done. The ball is now in the Jets court and would look like fools if they don’t close a deal.

Really?….We are talking about the NY Jests!
I still can’t believe Rex Ryan made it another year as thier headcoach.

Is there any news or rumors on the Bucs and Grimes? Joe? Anyone?

  7. OAR Says:

Maybe, if we throw in a collection of foot fetish dvd’s Rex would go for it?

Hahahaha….the Media was completely DUPED like children re: Revis!!!!!!! LMAO

  9. BirdDoggers Says:

The best news yet regarding the Revis trade is that the Dominik is growing impatient. Even if their interest in Grimes is just a rumor, it’s news that needed to be floated. The Jets can’t hold the Bucs hostage in this situation. Revis would require a big contract, which is probably keeping Dominik from pulling the trigger on other options.

I say sign Grimes then make a deal for Revis after the draft. The asking price will be a lot cheaper given the fact that they will either get what they can now or get nothing. He walks during free agency next year, because they can’t franchise. If they do get him later release Easy-E for cap space.

  15. Doc Says:

  16. Cmurda Says:

As much as I have been ready to just fork over the 13th overall pick to get Revis, I do agree with RockStar at least putting the pressure on the Jets. The Jets tried to hold the cards and say they could retain Revis in order to put the pressure on the Bucs. Dom replied with an eff you, then we will move on to Grimes. Great move Rockstar. I doubt that we are sincerely interested in Grimes. I feel that would have happened already if true.

When are the Jets going to quit being a bunch of beeeotches, and deal us Revis. I think the ONLY REASON those TOOL BAG JETS are doing this is to CREATE MEDIA BUZZ because, we all know there really is only one NFL team in NY, the G-Men.

  20. Hard buc'n Says:

Freeman for revis (and new contract) straight up. Draft a geno.

  21. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I think we should sign Grimes to give a solid CB on our roster. It also shows the Jets we are not willing to part with the #13 pick in the draft. They won’t even let us negotiate a contract with him. I also think we should sign Elvis Dumervil to help out our pass rush. He is a really good player and could be had for reasonable money. If we can’t get Elvis then I think we should honestly look at Abrahams. Two reasons why…

    1. He can mentor our younger DE’s they seem so set on being our future.
    2. He can give us more insight into the Falcons Defense and their signal calling.

If I was the GM I would sign Grimes and Dumervil and draft the best available player at #13. Whether it be a DL or DB jump on it. There should be some really talented players still available that could almost instantly improve our team. Just my opinions…

  24. Dreambig Says:

Everyone is talking about the Bucs turning to Grimes, only I have not heard that Grimes would even want to come here. It takes two to tango. I agree with cmurda, I don’t think the Bucs are really interested in Grimes or any of the other free agent CBs other than Revis. It’s way too quiet.
