Pressure Building On Mark Dominik?

March 15th, 2013

One of the few writers who has been on top of the Darrelle Revis saga in Joe’s eyes from Day 1 has been Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports.

While Cole believes the Jets are under pressure to get rid of Revis before he flies away from the New Jersey Swamplands and goes all free agent in 2014, Cole believes that in the long run, Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik has the most pressure on his shoulders to lock up Revis. Cole explained on the “Booger and Rich Show” heard on WHFS-FM 98.7.

“[It’s an] argument over the first round draft pick basically, the Bucs do not want to give up this year’s first round draft pick. Percy Harvin set the standard.

“Tampa wants to get this done and the Jets want to see if they can get more. Sooner or later this will have to get done because the Jets don’t want to get left out in the cold. Revis’ camp is content to play out this deal and hit the market. Revis’ camp has an awful lot of leverage. There are 15 teams willing to get Revis but not willing to get the deal done (because of the cost of the contract/ransom for the trade).

“As much as I know how much the Glazers like Mark Dominik, if he doesn’t make some headway soon, you would think there will be pressure on him.”

Cole noted Dominik is entering his fifth season as the Bucs general manager without a playoff appearance, and Jets general manager John Idzik is in his sixth week, so Idzik isn’t under the gun as much as perhaps Dominik, Cole suggested.

Also, Cole thinks Revis’ agents will shoot for a $16 million annual contract but may settle for $13-14 million a year.

Revis & Clayborn’s 1st year back from injury probably with be a feel-out-period. So, Revis may get $16 Million and barely play this year. I think this trade may go down to Draft Day. Jets know they only have a gimpy Revis for 2013 only. They’ll cave-in on Draft Day

Good thing we’re committed to filling one of our four gaping holes on defense before draft day. What a freaking disaster.

  4. Bucnjim Says:

    Lev,

That was an awesome video! Thanks for the laugh.

  5. Terraj Says:

I dont understand how anyone could justify giving any corner, let alone a 30 year old corner coming off knee surgery 16 mil a year. Paying one player that much will create deficiencies in the rest of your team. The top paid corners are making 9 mil a year. At this point in his career there is no way Revis is worth almost twice as much as any other corner.

Bucs need to grab Cason on the cheap (assuming grimes re-signs with atlanta) just to know we have one starter on the roster AND DROP ERIC WRIGHT. Man, I hate that guy.

  6. AtrainWd40 Says:

Just wish it was over one way or the other…. Sign at least one quality corner please!

  7. T in Orlando Says:

I disagree with Cole about the less pressure on Idzik, Dominick has a track record, some hit and some miss, however the only way Dominick looks bad on this deal if it’s made, would be if Revis never comes back to the production level he was at (hence why I’m sure he doesn’t want to give up too much).

Idzik on the other hand is dealing with one of the single biggest decisions a GM can make (short of a HC hire); what to do with a Star Player who everyone knows will not be back next year. Not helping things is the fact that the owner has directly stated he will not pay Revis the money he’s looking for, and he said that Revis WILL be traded. Then on the side, the previous GM saying he needs to get at LEAST a 1st, a 3rd and a 7th (the Harvin deal).

Odds are, no matter what happens, good or bad, traded or not, Idzik will be judged by this for at least the next 2 years. I don’t think the perception of Dominick will be as heavily weighted by this single transaction, especially if this doesn’t happen.

  8. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

    NE signed Leon Washington. Damn.

  9. Bucs or gtfo Says:

Joe, I don’t understand why the Jets wouldn’t take the offer already. They lost their starting RB and possibly could get Blount + draft picks to fill some needs. I don’t get it.

  10. Mitch Says:

If the talks do drag out all the way to the draft I’d like to see dominik trade down in the first and acquire more picks before we have to trade away our first pick. Moreover, if we have to give our first this year,by trading down the value of the pick lost wont be as high and we still get revis. Win-win?

  11. Adam L Says:

Things will start to make more sense to you, my fellow Bucs fans, if you just step back and realize that Mark Dominik is a lousy GM.

If you take that point of view, all of these moves/non-moves make sense.

  12. robert Says:

when I think of how bad it sux about bennett i think of the DE’s new england got last year in the draft. not top tier names, but they got after the QB. i think dom is saving money for revis by letting bennett walk….but i also think thats way to much cash to give a gimp 30 yr old CB……hell without giving away picks lol

dom….sign a damn CB or two already!!!!!!!!!

  13. Big Picture Guy Says:

Blount as a trade piece certainly is an interesting proposition. The Jets do need WR help too, Benn could be a fit there too.

To say the pressure isn’t on Idzik, I think is ignorant. This is maybe the career defining move for him in only his 5th week, shy only to who the HC to replace Rex Ryan next year.

The thing I don’t get in all of this, is why the Jets seemingly aren’t allowing the Bucs or anyone to negotiate with Revis’ agents. If a team can work out a long-term deal, or at least an understanding, then I would have to think that moves the deal along. Why set up a road-block for yourself when you’ve stated a deal has to get done? The Jets continue to defy logic, and the Bucs are getting caught

  14. Tbuc Says:

No pass rushers, no CB’s?? Team struggled with both areas last year and still have not addressed either area. Dom sucks. Joe is looking like a joke the more and more he labels this joke a rock star.

  15. DougMartin22 Says:

REVIS ISNt 30 YEARS OLD. HE IS 27 FOR GOD SAKE.

  16. buccanay Says:

By the time he get back to the player HE ONCE WAS, he will be 30, then all downhill from 30. Yea give up more high draft picks and pay this guy franchise QB money…what a freakin joke this has become!

  17. Vern4499 Says:

    @DougMartin22

Thank you! He turns 28 in July. I like how people want Grimes so bad when he is two years older than Revis.

  18. Vern4499 Says:

    @buccanay

Was Ronde a down hill at 30? How about Charles Woodson or Champ Bailey? CBs are playing at a high level into their mid 30’s.

  19. stvcl Says:

Dang! The dude’s damaged goods. Don’t want him on the team. Price tag is WAY too much. Pass on this one Dom.

  20. Tomcin Says:

Please! No Revis. He’s living on his past reputation. God he’s coming off an injury, so you don’t know what shape he’ll be in. Way to much to give up plus signing him to a big salary. C’mon Bucs wake up. Sign a couple of FA CB’s , keep your draft picks. Could sign Grimes if you want to take a chance on a player coming off injury & another CB and save money & draft picks. Regis will not take us to the playoffs.

  21. Paul Says:

Hopefully we don’t give up too much for Revis because we still need to draft a RT, TE, DT, QB, CB (if they cut Wright), DE (Would’ve been better to have a proven player on a 1yr insurance contract here since Bowers legal is a ?).

I still think Dustin Keller would be a good fit, but I don’t know where he’s going to find the other positions at, especially if he trades away our picks.

  22. Paul Says:

“Yea give up more high draft picks and pay this guy franchise QB money…what a freakin joke this has become!”

Really hard to argue with that when Revis isn’t even running yet, per an nfl.com article.

  23. Tim Says:

Forget Revis the price tag is too steep for a team rebuilding, this coming from a season ticket holder!

Go out grabe Grimes and Jenkins for less than you would of paid Revis. Extend Mike Williams and then look to extend Freeman his price tag is low right now. Draft the best player at 13 no matter the position and target a CB in the 2nd round.

With two good safeties, and two average corners and depth we will be fine. It would be ideal if ole #20 came back to play nickel and dime for us, but what we done need to do is pay an aging player 14 mill a year and lose a 1st round pick while we are still about 2 or 3 years out of being contenders.

  24. Hyperryd Says:

Funny I remember a few years ago when a team took a chance on a certain player that everybody said was done because of a serious injury. One team took the chance and everybody thought they were crazy…..
I think it has worked out pretty good for the Saints and Drew Brees!!!

Let Dom & coach do thier thing. Everybody remember this. It’s just bragging rights and recreation money gone for us if they are wrong, it’s thier jobs on the line. I think they are taking this seriously.

  25. CC Says:

Doms career as a GM is not looking to good to me. Our defense has not improved over last years crap.Yet. Better get busy or this will be his last year in Tampa.

  26. Tom Says:

Even if the Bucs get Revis, who is the #2 corner? Who is the nickel? Leonard Johnson can play dime, maybe nickel. Danny Gorrer etc are all end of the bench guys. You would expect them to draft a corner or two in the draft but starting a 2nd/3rd round rookie isn’t the answer. The Bucs NEED two starting caliber corners, they HAVE 0.

  27. Patrick Says:

Joe, do you really give a sh!t how old a cornerback is when you look at how pathetic our secondary was last year? Deion Sanders at 46 would be better than what we currently have!

  28. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

To say the defense has not improved is mistaken…we possibly have the best safety tandem in the league now.

Cutting Wright would be bad at this point. We have no one better. Cheaper would be better. I really do not see why every hates him…he had a first offense. Big deal. If it doesn’t happen again it’s done with.

The difference between Revis and Grimes is draft picks. Getting Revis might set us back yet another year…and his complaining would get him cut next year anyway. We have too many needs to trade our picks away…and we NEED Blount.
