Jets “Not Actively Shopping” Revis

March 14th, 2013

The New York Post tossed cold water on a Revis-to-Bucs trade this morning

The gamesmanship on the Darrelle Revis front continued into the wee hours, as the New York media is all over the potential turning of Revis Island into a tropical key in Tampa Bay.

The New York Post busted out a story at 2:31 a.m. (updated at 4:26 a.m.) that says their sources are telling them the Jets have turned their nose at moving Revis, whose only legitimate suitor seems to be the Bucs.

A source told The Post that no trade is imminent with Revis and the team is not actively shopping him. … …

On NFL Network, Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano said of Revis, “Everything’s a possibility. We’re trying to get better and anybody that can help us do that, they’re definitely on our radar.”

Fans by now know where Joe stands on Revis.

Revis would be an amazing difference-maker with the Bucs’ defense, if he’s healthy. But nobody knows whether Revis is healthy coming of ACL surgery. And a first-round pick price tag is just too high for Revis with only one season remaining on his contract and no guarantee of him staying with the Bucs.

First round picks — if drafted properly — should become cornerstone starters for any franchise for at least five years, hopefully 10. You don’t just throw them around lightly for injured players.

Joe gets what Revis could mean for the Bucs and the Schiano and Dave Wannstedt (Revis’ college coach) desire the guy, and Joe would cheer heartily for the Revis, but Joe still wouldn’t cough up the premium pick. The Jets have no leverage here.

I thinks it’s time to move on. Go after the other corners and leave the Jets holding the check.

  2. SeanyMac in SC Says:

To risky when you consider the price for a guy who might not even be healthy. I know the Bucs have special “knee” doctors, but I still don’t feel goo about Revis

Another feeling I get is Revis is more about himself and his money. The NSO wants “family”. Those two attitudes to mesh well.

I for one hope that the Rock Star would walk away from the table on this one.

  3. HFXBUC Says:

Let’s assume Rock Star has spoken to Revis’ agent and have a deal in principle. Let’s assume that tampering can’t be proven. Let’s assume Revis has decided he’s going to agree to the Buc’s offer and only the Buc’s offer…. That kills the Jet’s leverage and ability to trade Revis to another team for more than what the Bucs are offering.

If I’m the Jets do exactly what they are doing right now. Tell the world he’s not being traded. I go watch a Pro Day at Alabama, I throw the offer in the garbage. I make the Bucs wait until all the FA corners are signed and they (the Bucs) get desperate and up their offer.

  4. stvcl Says:

IMO pass on Revis, we don’t know how he will come back after his injury. Too much of a gamble with too high a price tag. Still would like to see us pic up a solid starter in FA and then use the draft picks to further shore up the secondary.

  5. the_buc_realist Says:

If the rock star does go this route, i just hope that he added another get out loop hole in the contract.

  6. Macabee Says:

The CBs are 1 by 1 starting to come off the boards, DRC to Denver, Cox to SD and the market is soft. If the market is like this come the weekend, expect Smith and Grimes to stay home.

I’ve already said I’m ambivalent about Revis. We shouldn’t waste time with a team that can’t make up it’s mind or a player who may be signaling that he doesn’t want to be traded here. What’s up with Revis being seen wearing a Falcons cap? He knows what’s going and he knows what he is doing.

    Time to move on!

  7. Mr Lucky Says:

Dominik, toss in Benn and make the draft pick a round 1 in 2014 not 2013. Sweeten the pot with Blount as well.

  8. feelthepewterpower Says:

Why not wait until 2014 to try and sign Revis in Free Agency…No team is going offer the Jets a first rounder for one season for Island known as Revis. That would be foolish….if Mark does offer a first rounder, he’s basically calling all-in on his career.

  9. flmike Says:

Actually, the Jets have a huge leverage advantage, over Revis, but not the Bucs. They have a signed contract that obligates Revis to play x amount of years for x amount of dollars, and they have the power to trade or not trade him or to just outright waive him, the ball is in their court, but no team, the Bucs or whoever have to deal with them, let Woody and Idzik play their games with Revis and his people, but if they wait any longer than this afternoon to make a move then I believe they will be stuck with a very unhappy Revis next season.

  10. Killian Says:

    Joe,

Can we talk about the ‘weak’ contracts given out to Avril, DRC, Cox and Welker last night? Could the Bucs really not beat a 2-year 15 mil contract for a stud DE or a 5-mil a year contract for a decent corner? Is it that we are holding out for bigger and better players i.e Bennett or Dumerville (if cut)/Grimes or Smith? If Revis is not on the radar anymore, we need to be signing some of these players before they are gobbled up. You would think we could get Grimes and Bennett on the cheap, now that the market is somewhat set.

  11. 4everBucsFan Says:

Izdic has up to Saturday to decide, when the Jets will have to pay Revis a 1 million dollar roster bonus. If they end up paying him, then they will keep him.

  12. T in Orlando Says:

I agree with Macabee’s point, the corners are starting to sign, and the Bucs should seriously consider pick up one of the guys out there, don’t break the bank, but have the guy in for a visit and make a fair offfer. Even if we get Revis, I believe we will still need to pick up another CB in FA, maybe not a Grimes or Smith, but someone else.

Joe, any update on Bennett’s situation, now that Avril’s signed for 2yrs/$15 mil? I would think Bennett could be had for a similar deal, in the $6-$7 mil a year range.

In general, it seems that the market for players, except for QBs and WRs, is really beginning to level off a little bit.

  13. bucfanjeff Says:

For all the reasons that Joe has mentioned, we should pass on Revis. Sign Sean Smith, pay him less, keep your picks and draft Trufant.

Revis is NOT worth a first rounder with so many unkowns.

  14. 4everBucsFan Says:

    @ Killian

It’s called collusion and it appears all the GMs are in on it.

  15. Paul Says:

Big fan of the website, but man thanks for getting my hopes up last night with your last post stating the Bucs were negotiating a deal, only to wake up to this.

  16. Cwb613 Says:

Thank God!!!! If Rockstar was going to give up a 1st rounder(#13) for a guy that hasn’t proven himself after an ACL…especially a corner that has to be on his toes when it comes to guarding sharp routes by receivers…I would’ve been really upset.

  17. Back up kicker Says:

Fux the Jets. Sign Grimes or Smith, keep the pick(s), draft a corner in round 1or 2 and go get Reeves as a free agent next year after he shows he’s healthy.

  18. SirustheVirus Says:

Well we need to sign a Keenan Lewis. He’ll be lowers price that Grimes and Smith. Just incase seeing how Cox is gone. We need to get one of these guys even Cary Williams would work. We can draft one in the 2nd or 3rd round, But we need 3 good CB going into the season.

  19. SoonerinTampa Says:

Is Grimes healthy? He is coming off of an injury as well…

Sean Smith is a upgrade for sure…do the deal Rock Star.

  20. Aldo Says:

at first i want the island, but this trade talk is so annoying now, i guess its time to move on, sign keenan lewis or brent grime (NOT sean smith, waaaaaaaaay overrated) and i preffer to trade for two quality CBs in the draft, i preffer and effort to get Dee Milliner and look how to get Rhodes or Trufant!!! we can make our own islands!!! is not like Revis can be the only one….

  21. NY Bucs fan Says:

Forget revis no 1st round pick for him let the jets keep him

  22. Dylan Says:

F*ck the jets and the circus there always bringing with anything or anyone on the jets. They want to trade him, now they don’t. It’s time to move on and forget revis and let them have fun trying to trade a injured player with no leverage. They had a partner but are being greedy to an extent it seems. So go sign one of these corners or two, and do your Homework on the draft Greg and mark and let’s do this thing. #GoBucs

  23. Aldo Says:

complementing my last comment, bring back ronde as a CB (i cant see how old ronde can be worst than biggers and co) get keenan lewis and a competent RT

Focus the draft in CB, CB, LB, TE, OL, RB, DL and move on!!!

  24. Dylan Says:

It’s helping neither side making this take so long. If your gonna trade him do it already. It will help the jets plan there draft board with there new picks, while also let’s the bucs know what do to in free agency before its too late and the corners are gone. The jets are the dumbest franchise and the most garbage franchise in the nfl, I strongly didn’t like the jets before the revis drama, now with the circus games there playing with revis it moved to hate. Can’t wait to whoop them this year. GM should get the stupid award for not jumping at a 2014 first round pick. They need a QB, lets face facts they will be pickin in the top 5 next year. So why not jump on the bandwagon for two first next year. Who knows! Johny football could come out and they need to trade up. They could hold the 1st overall pick and just grab him then have another first to add more weapons for him and start a faster turn around. Jets are just stupid forget those losers until they get spanked playing the bucs next year. Hope dominik is thinking the same way.

  25. OKC_Buc Says:

It all depends on how much MD believes the other CB’s on the current market are rated. If he is not going to budge on the 1st round pick for Revis then it’s time to pull chocks and go after Nnamdi or Grimes before we’re stuck standing with our d!ck in our hand.

  26. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Even Revis will get exposed w/o a pass rush. Clif Avril of the Lions has got away, and we really needed a pass rusher.
If we loose Bennett, then what ?
Even with the corners and safeties we had, they all suddenly get better, if we have a pass rush.

  27. T in Orlando Says:

    @ Chris@ARCT

A good chunk of the time, QBs were getting rid of the ball in less than 3 seconds, if that’s the case, it’s impossible to consistently get pressure on the QB, unless you have Reggie White, Bruce Smith, Warren Sapp and John Randle all in their primes, you’re not going to get that kind of pressure consistently.

The back 7 need to be able to cover for 3-4 seconds, which ours could not do. Goldson helps, but we really need 2 new starting corners, and I think neither of them should be a rookie.

  28. pick6 Says:

looking back on our draft history, there are probably only 3 first round picks by the bucs in the last 15 years that panned out better than 5 years of revis would, assuming he is not a far lesser player than he was before the injury. 75% of revis’ peak would be better than 100% of talib over the next 5 years

  29. T in Orlando Says:

Just heard a suggested trade from The Commish (his idea, not saying this is what’s on the table). Offer this year’s 3rd and a conditional 2nd next year that can become a first if Revis makes the Pro Bowl.

I’m not huge proponent of acquiring Revis, but this would be a palatable trade if you ask me.

  30. BucFan20 Says:

Keep screwing around with this and about the only one left out there by the end of the day will be Biggers!!

  31. Northern Bucs Fan Says:

Time to pull the Revis plug… The Bucs are just shooting themselves in the foot waiting around for Ikie to stop dragging his feet. Too much to pay for a possible broken physically and a locker room cancer. Just my 2 cents…

  32. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    WTF

  33. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Go Sign Sean Smith, Keenan Lewis, Benard Pollard(To back up Mark Barron) and Matt Shaughnessy ASAP!

  34. Weber_88 Says:

Trade Revis for 2 Second rounders and draft Ziggy at 13. We need another pass rusher. Then get the honey badger in the 3rd. Revis makes everyone better
