Leon Washington And The Bucs

March 13th, 2013

leon washington

When Joe learned that stud return specialist and talented running back Leon Washington was let loose by the Seahawks after Seattle acquired headache Percy Harvin, Joe right away thought Washington would be a nice pick up for the Bucs. Tampa Bay is so devoid of return help they turned to ineffective Arrelious Benn and never used Michael Smith past opening day.

It seems Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik was reading Joe’s mind.

Appearing on “The Opening Drive” this morning, heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio, co-hosted by Ross Tucker and Derrick Brooks, Washington said the Bucs tried to swing a trade with Seattle for his services, but instead, Seattle passed and released him.

Washington noted how he likes Tampa Bay and could easily see him on a Bucs roster. Washington averaged 29 yards per kick return last season.

Stay tuned. If Dominik inquired about a trade for Washington, that means there is interest and he’s walking the streets now. Washington would be a nice addition.

bring him in baby! im getting a little anxious sitting at work refreshing every source i have lol

  2. T in Orlando Says:

Return specialist and change of pace RB, make it happen.

  3. Vic Says:

Just shows what a dumbass Dominik and/or Seattle is, trading for a guy that was cut, and not taking the trade on Seattle’s end.

  4. Matt Says:

we must have tried to trade a player instead of a pick…what team would pass on a draft pick just to cut the player?

  5. Snook Says:

This is a no brainer. Sign him. He’s a great returner (always has been) and can be solid depth at RB too.

And why is there no mention in this of the fact he’s a 2012 PRO BOWLER at returner?

  6. Joe Says:

    Vic:

Was Trent Baalke a dumbass for trading for Anquan Boldin?

    Think Matt nailed it.

  7. @MikeInTampa2 Says:

    Sign that guy up!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Capt. Tim Says:

This would be a great pick up. Leon is a great talent. Instant upgrade to return game, and RB depth!

  9. jarrett Says:

Why not just take tavon austin with the 13th pick?? He will be the last elite player on the board in my opinion and be the BPA at 13, not Tyler Eifert

  10. Jeff Says:

I could totally see Dom trying to swap Benn for Washington (the former a decent fit given SEA’s lack of WR’s). L-Dub isn’t worth a pick, IMO, since he’s a true specialist and barely even a poor man’s Darren Sproles.

  11. Andrew 1 Says:

fricken sittin on pins and needles over here. sign someone already!

  12. SirustheVirus Says:

He would be a nice addition. Better then any Returner we have. Then Let D.j. Ware go.

  13. Andrew 1 Says:

Leon Washington is a very underrated and under appreciated player. if he is not asking for to much then sign him. he is someone who is easy to root for.

  14. Tampa2 Says:

Jarret – You are the only person..In the ENTIRE WORLD that thinks Tavon Austin is a better player than Tyler Eifert. I reject your post and opinion. I would actually like to print it out, and then light it on fire.

  15. Meh Says:

He’s no use anymore as RB in my opinion, but he’d be a great snag to fix our return game.

  16. Meh Says:

I like Eifert better than Austin, but its closer than you imply Tampa2.

  17. Saskbuco Says:

Be a solid special teams pickup, hope it happens……. and then Goldson and later today Brent “notwalkingdead” Grimes……Trade down and select D.Trufant or move up for a franchise LT….or sit at 13 for Ansah….exciting times what does BucsNation think???

  18. Snook Says:

Tied for most kickoff return TDs in NFL history with Josh Cribbs.

    Seriously, is he signed yet?

  19. Terraj Says:

Jarrett, proving ur brilliance again hahaha. We dont need another receiver. d-line, right tackle or secondary. Just stop talking, son

  20. Snook Says:

    Washington.
    Goldson.
    Grimes.

    GET IT DONE.

  21. Patrick Says:

Sign him up! We need a kickass return game since Freeman won’t be able to move us down the field!! 🙂

  22. Jacko101 Says:

I like Leon, pass on grimes and please don’t give up a 1st round pick this year for Revis if that even is still being talked about.

  23. cbell96825 Says:

Bring this guy to tampa. Also any word on how d goldson has he left tampa or are is he just picking what pen to sign with let us know if you have any news joe thanks man love the site.

  24. jarrett Says:

lets all stop acting like we know what dom’s thinking. No one on planet earth can tell me that Tavon Austin isn’t worth the 13th pick. Why can’t we accept that there are several ways we can go with the 13th pick?

Heres a thought: spend the FA period solidifying the secondary; and sign cliff avril for DLine depth

13th grab Tavon Austin; why? Adds another dangerous weapon at the slot WR and frees up opportunities for the whole offense, including the running game.

Take a tight end in the second… boom. Several needs filled in one offseason.

What I’m trying to say is Austin at 13 shouldnt sound crazy or surprise anyone. No one thought we’d take Barron last year.

  25. cbell96825 Says:

Sorry about the grammer was driving while posting that .

  26. Patrick Says:

@jarrett………we already have enough weapons for Freeman, another WR is not gonna keep Freeman from making the same costly mistakes over and over again.

  27. Curmudgeon Says:

    a) don’t text while driving
    b) spell grammar correctly when talking about grammar

  28. Andrew 1 Says:

was driving while posting!?!?!?!? dont you know you could get yourself or someone else killed doing that? you should prolly keep your eyes on the road.

  29. Joe Says:

    Jarrett:

You are going to spend the 13th pick in the draft on a backup?

    Bourbon’s tasting good today, huh?

  30. RCH Says:

All this trade talk lets trade Myron Lewis for Matt Cassel

  31. Macabee Says:

Something doesn’t feel right with the Goldson get. This should have been done by now. Why did the guy take the plane if during pre-FA talks they weren’t in the same ballpark? Could it be the old “you know it’s not our practice to pay signing bonuses”. Everything is probably OK, it’s just me and a mild case of the yips!

    +++++++

Guys, it was a matter of being generous to Washington. Seattle thinks highly of him but his services were no longer needed. Now he is free to choose his next destination. The trade Dominik likely tried wsa a swap of 7ths or a 6th for a 7th or something with little real value but enough to gain his services.

  33. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Macabbe

yea I wouldnt worry to much. remember how long it took us to sign Vincent Jackson? it took fricken forever. the bucs just move slow is all.

  34. BucFan20 Says:

Driving while posting. Real smart. Hope you don’t kill someone!!

  35. Andrew 1 Says:

now if he leaves Tampa without signing then I would worry.

  36. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

Leon is a def a Buccaneer man.

He would be an upgrade to special teams and just the right kind of vet backup that Martin needs.

  37. 941-Bucs Says:

I am on Jarrett’s side with this one! Tyvon Austin is a very dangerous weapon who would make an immediate impact with the Bucs. He is a huge upgrade over Tiquan Underwood and would also be a dangerous return man.

Most here and other Buc fan pages have been begging for Harvin or Welker and Austin is their clone. But there is no way in hell we would take him at #13?

Then there are fans who would REACH all day for a player like Rhodes but think grabbing Austin would be crazy. Personally i just don’t understand the perception some fans have.

With that said i don’t care who we get at #13 as long as they can make an immediate impact on our team and help us win more ball games. There is a TON of strong talent this year in the first round and should be interesting to say the least who we get!

  38. BucFan20 Says:

    Any Bucs visit anyone?

  39. tha truth is... Says:

do it (in my Schwarzenegger voice)

  40. Sneedy16 Says:

Tavon Austin would probably make a great addition, but if Freeman over throws him going across the middle, at 5-8, 174lbs it won’t be a pretty site. If Freeman was more accurate then I wouldn’t mind it, but a big TE would be a better fit.

  41. tone850 Says:

Washington has been a very undervalued hard nose player. Loved watching him at FSU, would love to see him on the Bucs’ roster and making plays.

  42. teacherman777 Says:

    I would love this signing!

    Leon is a warrior.

    Perfect Buccaneer.

    Go Bucs!
