Jets Pass On Bucs’ Offer For Darrelle Revis

March 12th, 2013

Joe thought he would give his readers an update.

First, 49ers safety Dashon Goldson is being whisked to One Buc Palace by private jet courtesy of Team Glazer, tomorrow. Joe only hopes his hostess for the day is a scantily-clad Rachel Watson.

Also, the agent for Goldson, who is also Dixie Chicks cornerback Brent Grimes’ agent, has denied Grimes signed a contract with the Dixie Chicks and is still available to play elsewhere in 2013.

Now with Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis, the creator, curator and overall guru of ProFootballTalk.com, the great Mike Florio, reports that indeed the Jets had (have?) an offer on the table for Revis. Terms of the deal are unknown. What is known, per Florio, is that the Jets turned their nose up on the offer.

To add intrigue, the Jets have yet to discuss a new pact with Revis or his people.

Joe thinks this is critical. Joe cannot imagine Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik trying to make a serious play for Revis, and not having him locked up before consummating the trade.

If Dominik, or any general manager, acquires Revis without a new contract, Joe’s pretty sure that will end in a one-year player rental and Revis bolts.

If the Bucs were just one cornerback from a Super Bowl push, Joe wouldn’t be too worried about renting Revis.

The Bucs, however, are clearly more than one player away from playing in February.

UPDATE: Ian Rapoport of NFL Network stated late Tuesday night that Goldson is expected in Tampa Bay tonight and, “would be surprised if he leaves without a contract.”

Idzik is a moron if he doesn’t act quick. The offer he just refused could end up being the best.

  2. gotbbucs Says:

Shaping up to be a buyers market on CB’s this year. I’m not too worried.

Goldson will be a huge signing and then focus can turn to CB’s tomorrow.

It’s actually playing out pretty good for the Bucs. Players the Bucs wouldn’t have any interest in are gobbling up cap space on other teams leaving the Bucs as one of the last teams with money to burn.

  3. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

If Tampa does not make the playoffs this year, Dominik may quite possibly be gone.
So, he is under considerable pressure to win now.
I am glad he did not give the whole farm away for Revis, even though I would love to see him play for us.
I just hope we can land Goldson, but Cincinnati is wanting him too.

  4. Capt. Tim Says:

Sounds to me as if the Jets new GM is indecisive and unsure.
    Fatal flaws in his job.

Revis would be great. So would about 10 other CBs. And the number keeps growing, as more guys get cut.

Goldson will be a fantastic addition. Think we will get this done!

  5. BOb Says:

agreed. but we dont know that theyve passed on it. might just be playing the waiting game. i hope it is dead though. but them not making any moves is telling me its not dead

  6. You Go Joe Says:

Yay for Revis?? I do think Mark Dominik had a plan to keep Revis in the long run, but at a cheap cost that would just take Revis of Jets hands.

  7. gotbbucs Says:

Also looks like Bennett and the rest of the 4-3 DE’s are finding a pretty soft market.

  8. Teacherman777 Says:

    Brent Grimes is a baller.

So is Antoine Winfield. Who just got cut. Considered the BEST runstopping CB in the NFL.

There are so many players available because of the salary cap.

    Dashon is the perfect signing.

    Like the Seahawks and Ravens.

Two stud safeties to solidfy the center of the field.

  9. Oahubuc Says:

Goldson would be a real nice piece. Hopefully we can pick up some value at corner without having to throw the farm at Revis. I don’t have a good feeling about Grimes going forward, though.

  10. Illuminati Says:

I’m sure we made a reasonable offer for Revis. But that’s a trade, and we still have to pursue free agents. We can’t wait around and hope the Jets come around to our offer. I say plow ahead.

There’s a bunch of FA corners that would be upgrades for us. We can’t let a potential Revis deal stall our progress.

  11. Jacko101 Says:

I’m sure by noon tomorrow we will here more but MOST importantly Why haven’t we heard a word over Wright’s Deal????

  12. AfroBuc Says:

Go for Ashoughma now. They made a play for him two years ago and he can play press coverage.

  13. BucfaninMi Says:

if i were a Jets fan i would be depressed.

  14. BOb Says:

jeez. jacko101. we wont cut him till we have his replacement(s)

  15. Greg Says:

Thank God! I was scared to death of giving up a top draft pick and a boatload of money for one corner. I’m tired of people using the expression coined in the Deion Sanders era about how one corner can cover have to field. You can’t do that in the modern era when you have quarterbacks like Drew Brees throwing to four wide receivers A tight end and a running back. We have too many holes on our defense to be giving up that much in salary-cap to one player. Hopefully we dodged a bullet!

  16. Macabee Says:

One step at a time. Goldson is not done yet! PFT is reporting that it may not happen until tomorrow. This part of the Buccaneer Way makes me nervous. Miami, Philly, and Cleveland, other cap rich teams are signing contracts left and right. I’ll be relieved when the first one is done!

  17. squadoosh Says:

I think they should move on from Revis and concentrate on Smith, Grimes, etc..
He is too difficult with always wanting to renegotiate, is coming off of a major injury, we have to give up a draft pick…etc.
The guy is good or was good but is a pain in the ass. The Jets are a hot mess..move on and get Goldshon and the other good corners available.

  18. Robbie_G Says:

Ok, so let me get this right. They want to trade him, coming off a major injury.
NY wants the moon and the stars, but will not let any teams wanting to trade for him, work a new deal? ummmm, no thanks I’ll pass then. Bring in Grimes, Lewis or Sean Smith them for half the price and keep the draft picks. Like Joe said I would not do this deal un less I get a new deal done first. Leave it to the dysfunctional Jets to make more media noise for no reason.

  19. Bucs Fan #238 Says:

Bucs have not closed a deal yet.

Hopefully they aren’t ignoring other guys.

    Can the Bucs multi-task?

  20. Bucs Fan #238 Says:

So the Bucs wasted all this time jerking around a trade deal ON THE FIRST DAY of Free Agency???

The trade could have went down last week.

  21. gotbbucs Says:

“Miami, Philly, and Cleveland, other cap rich teams are signing contracts left and right.”
I’ll gladly accept not being lumped into that group.

I refuse to get nervous until I see a bunch of other DB’s start signing elsewhere. I have a feeling the rest of the league is waiting for us to break the silence and set the market with this deal.

  22. Dave Says:

If they land Goldson that is fantastic and negates any reason to give up picks for Revis when instead they can get one of about 5 CBs and draft another in the first few rounds. Better safety play… ALL-Pro safety play, would negate any reason to pay that much for one year for one CB.
I hope to see Sean Smith or Grimes alongside a rookie with Barber playing the slot, Goldson at FS and Barron roaming the box.
To REALLY make it good I would love to see Avril playing end on a defensive line rotation with Bowers and Clayborn

    Jacko101

Wright is fighting it and will probably lose. That will flush out within a couple days probably

  23. Cmurda Says:

Given the choice between Revis and Goldson, Ill take Goldson all day every day. Hes not coming off a serious injury and is a free agent not requiring draft picks like Revis would. If we miss revis and get Goldson, thats a win. i wont smile until Goldson signs the dotted line at 1 Buc.

  24. Jwayne Says:

Pass on Revis. Even if we extend his contract he will want to redo it next year! He did it non stop in NY. Get Smith and Cox, and get that Damn Goldson deal done already and we’re in good shape!

  25. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I notice that since the Revis rumors started heating up today, there are a bunch more anti-Revis guys. Could it be that you are setting yourself up to b!tch and moan about everything the Bucs do in the offseason? If we don’t bring in any free agents, we complain. If we only get mid-level guys, we aren’t doing enough. If we get the best CB in the NFL, he’s too expensive and we should get value guys. Some people will just never be happy. SMH

  26. dr j Says:

    jacko101,

because we haven’t signed any FA CBs yet to replace Wright.

  27. Capt. Tim Says:

If we didn’t get the deal done, then Dom refused to overvalue Revis- IMO.
Dom proved last year, that he isn’t afraid of big numbers.

This year is playing out differently. Last year, there wasn’t a lot of talent in our areas of need.we struck quick, and hit 2 bullseyes outta 3.

This year- there is a lot of talented players, and it gets deeper by the moment. The Dolphins cut Karlos Danby. That guy is a Player!
A lot of the players are a lil older. They may be disappointed in what they get offered in Free agency.

Meybe this year, patience is going to be the smart play- after we sign Goldson, of course!!

  28. Cmurda Says:

Goldson is a must. An absolute must. I can deal with any 2 of the remaining 600 cornerbacks. There’s only 1 Goldson though.

  29. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Cmurda,

If we for some reason don’t sign Goldson, our egos are going to be crushed more than anything. If you send out the private plane on the first day of free agency, are willing to pay the money, and still can’t get the guy, it’s time to go into depression mode. The doors need to be locked at One Buc until the deal is done. I suspect that will be the case.

  30. Jacko101 Says:

@bob what are you talking about cutting him I said what’s the deal with his Appeal? Jumping the gun huh buddy?

  31. Snook Says:

    Not surprised…

And why do we want Revis so much anyways? He holds out every other season for a new contract.

F that guy. Go get Grimes.

  32. Rob Says:

This is good news. It means Dominik is smart enough to not overpay for a 29 year old CB who will demand $15 to $16 million per year or will walk next year anyway.

  33. Bucs Fan #238 Says:

How weird would the scene be if Dom and Schiano blocked the door and said to the agents and player that they can’t leave… desparately mean it… only to find out that the agent and player really want to leave.

Then, after that weird moment, the agent asks if the private jet can stop in Detroit on the way home.

  34. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Revis has held out one time, and missed exactly zero games. Why does everyone continue to say he holds out every season? Get your facts straight before you criticize someone.

  35. Raphael Says:

Sign Dashon. .. Forget about Revis……Sign Asomougha or smith from Miami or cox from Jacksonville or Drc. ……

  36. Bucs Fan #238 Says:

If we don’t get Revis, then he’s a pain, better off elsewhere… but if we do get Revis, then everyone will jump with excitement.

  37. Bucs Fan #238 Says:

Is Dom penny-wise yet pound foolish?

  38. Raphael Says:

Dom is a rock star ….bro

  39. Nate Says:

if we could land Revis and goldson and way winfield.. for maybe 3rd downs? We could be very dangerous!

  40. Illuminati Says:

Anyone notice how there’s been no news about Sean Smith? You know how cagey the Bucs are about announcing deals. I’m thinking tomorrow we’ve signed Goldson and Smith, and maybe a second-tier CB like Cox. And maybe even Cliff Avril to boot.

Then we can relax and take BPA in the draft.

  41. Yusef Says:

Doesn’t look like this potential trade is dead yet, new article states bucs are still in the running for revis

  42. gorillapimp Says:

I see a lot of money being thrown around.I know one thing for sure these cats go through money like drunken sailors.
