Bucs No. 3

February 7th, 2013

The 2012 NFL season wrapped up just a couple of days ago, so of course it is time to look ahead to 2013, something Joe has been doing for a few weeks now.

Sure, San Francisco is a favorite to contend for the Super Bowl they nearly won Sunday. But when Peter Schrager of FoxSports.com decided to put fingers to keyboard, he thought of other teams fans should watch outside of the Niners, the Dixie Chicks and a few other obvious teams.

Schrager believes the Bucs are a top sleeper fans will overlook for 2013.

3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: The Baby Bucs showed real signs in 2012 and should be better in 2013. Quarterback Josh Freeman is entering his crucial fifth year and he has real weapons in Doug Martin, Vincent Jackson and Mike Williams. The defense is rich with young talent and should improve next year. The NFC South is loaded with good teams, but the Bucs could shake things up.

Yes, the defense should improve. The Bucs, barring an unforeseen injury, should be healthy up front for the first time in years. It is the secondary that needs a major upgrade and there is nothing to suggest Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik will not address that.

In Joe’s eyes, the Bucs’ playoff chances come down to two areas: Josh Freeman’s consistency and significant improvement in the secondary.

So many Free Agents will be available, Bucs may be able to draft best player available. This is a playoff team if #5 plays well

  2. Formerly "Brown Bag" Says:

Wouldn’t mind them bringing in a good free agent QB to challenge Freeman – just not Tebow.

  3. Jacko101 Says:

As much as we need CB’s we still need a Linebacker BADLY I think we can trade down and get Alec Ogletree, then trade back up to grab Rhodes or Banks. That would kill 2 birds in the 1st round

  4. Buc'It Says:

    @Jacko101

Do explain how Tampa Bay needs a LB badly? David is a rising star and Foster is above average. Yes we may part ways with Black but the SAMbacker is far from a necessity in this defense.

  5. Tim Says:

We need to cut Wright and bring in two corners in free agency. One needs to be an A free agent (Brent Grimes?) that can start, the other can be a type B free agent. Someone to push LJ or EB for the other starting slot. Draft another beast DT or and OLB and we will be sitting pretty good.

  6. Wienaman Says:

As I see it, Freeman is in a contract year. What normally happens in contract years? Players play as if their future depends on it, and considering the flashes we have seen from him, this could be an insane year for him. I would be surprised, but not extremely so if he were to lead this team deep into the playoffs and contend for MVP votes next year.

    @Buc’It

They confuse wants and needs. They want another LB, but the Bucs need CB’s.

  8. Bucnjim Says:

The first thing we need is a healthy offensive & defensive line. Get Joseph & Nicks back and get Bowers, Bennett, Clayborn, McCoy, Teo Neshiem back and healthy this will immediately improve the team. Since the draft has no sure thing at CB; the team should probably pursue one in free agency and draft one in the second or third round. Good chance they look at right tackle as well. Seems like there isn’t as many holes to fill this year as there has been in the past two or three.

  9. Capt. Tim Says:

The secondary is a disaster. But believe it will be addressed this offseason. That will immediately improve the pass rush. Unlike previous years, the secondary is the only “critical need”, so we should be greatly improved. I am really optimistic. Nice feeling.

Here is what I would like
    round 1. Sheldon Richardson dt
    round 2. DJ Fluker rt
    round 3. Logan Ryan cb
    Round 4. Dion sims te

  11. pick6 Says:

if any of the current CBs are still at the top of the depth chart when the season begins, i don’t think we will be a playoff team. unless the offense puts up at least 4 TDs a game consistently…..

  12. Capt. Tim Says:

AstroBuc-?? We were within 40 yards of having the worst secondary in the history of professional football. An absolutely atrocity that couldn’t cover anyone, and probably cost is at least 5 games. They were horrible. Just Horrible. And have been for 4 years( omitting the great Ronde Barber, of course!)

And you want to draft a DT,then a RT???

    Riiiight!

We have a RB who ran for 1400 + yards( with our two all pro guard out), and the number one rush defense- yet we ignore the totally helpless secondary

It we don’t draft Jonthan Banks or Xavier Rhodes with our first pick, the only exceptable option would be one incredibly talented TE- which we also need

  13. teacherman777 Says:

Defensive line could definitely use another stud DT/DE.

D-Lineman are HIG VALUE picks, because they are SO HARD TO FIND, and so OFTEN injured. We need D-line depth incredibly.

LB- there are some intriguing options here in the 2nd as well as FS.

CB- I would like to draft 2 and develop them with our other young CB’s. I owuld love 6-7 young, devoted CB’s.

OT- Not needed! Wait for waivers.

    RB- Not happenin!

    WR- why??

    TE- pff wtv….

    I WANT DEFENSE!!!!

  14. Mr Lucky Says:

As long as there isn’t a Michael Jackson reunion/look alike contest next December the offense will be fine……..right????

    NOT.

  15. PRBucFan Says:

I dont think we draft CB anymore in the first round.

I believe we will address that through FA

I think Dom pulls the trigger on FS, RT, DT,TE depending on BPA of the positions

UNLESS Milliner is there, I’m not sure if he would pass on him
