Shaun King: Pass On Darrelle Revis

January 28th, 2013

Like anyone who follows the Bucs, former Bucs quarterback Shaun King knows the Bucs need a cornerback worse than Joe needs a cold beer on a steamy Florida July Friday afternoon.

But that doesn’t mean King believes Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik should back up the Brinks truck to the Jets front offices to lure Darrelle Revis and his healing ACL tear to Tampa Bay. King — one of only three quarterbacks to lead the Bucs to an NFC Championship game — explained last week on the “Ron and Ian Show,” heard locally on WDAE-AM 620.

“If I am the Tampa Bay Bucs, I pass on Darrelle Revis,” King said. “Not only are you going to have to give up a lot to get him, it is going to be under the estimation you are going to pay him as one of the top football players. He wants quarterback money. He threatened to hold out last year. I would pass. I would be hesitant not only for what I have to give up but what I would have to pay him going forward for him to be a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“He wants to get paid. You can’t knock him for that. But he wants to be paid one of the top players in the game. Maybe before the injury the deserved it.”

King also spoke of Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner, one of the top cornerbacks in the draft and King seemed to suggest buyer beware with Milliner, who could be a reach at No. 13.

“Milliner is a good player,” King said. “He has already been a physical corner, been good against the run and got better on pass coverage as the season went on. I think he is the best corner in the draft but I would grade him below” several others drafted last year.

This seems to back up what Joe has heard from NFL insiders. While one scouting source told Joe cornerbacks are “three rounds deep,” there isn’t an elite, top shelf, lockdown corner in the draft.

Thus, teams will get more quality by picking a cornerback in the second or third round as opposed to reaching in the first round.

I do not say this often, but I completely agree with Shaun King on this subject.

  2. bucfanjeff Says:

I think you’ll see us take a Right Tackle at 13.

  3. Lovethepewter Says:

King, one of only 3 qbs to be given one of the best defenses ever assembled…have you already explained why you always state that? I missed the punchline to what joke.

  4. Lovethepewter Says:

But I do agree…rather get a guy like Shields for the long haul.

  5. lightningbuc Says:

Looking at that picture, is King attempting a comeback as a Nose Tackle?

  6. JonBuc Says:

King has become a heavier version of Frank Middleton. That cheap shot aside….I believe he is on to something.

  7. Adam Says:

My advice to Shaun… Pass on the cheese fries with gravy.

  8. Jonny 3.3 Says:

I agree with King’s opinions on both Revis and Milliner. But still Milliner’s upside and our need makes him a very smart pick up at #13.

  9. ElioT Says:

Man King is a fat bastard!

  10. Tim Says:

Holly Bat S@#$, I finally agree with King. Now if we can get him to pass on few donuts and cheap shots on his former team, we will be onto something.

I believe the Bucs will get a CB or two in free agencies, but they will be the second tier type of guys and the possibly draft one in the second or third round. My prediction for the first round is either DE/DT (depending on what happens with Miller and Bennet) or an OLB, that would solidify the core of our D for years to come.

  11. Sneedy16 Says:

BPA at that pick is the best way to go. No more reach for a need.

  12. Macabee Says:

I agree on Revis. But we’re not going to have to worry about the decision to pick Milliner. Unless something horrible happens at the combine (I’ve heard he can’t back pedal well and doesn’t have elite speed), If Luke Joeckel is off the board, then the Eagles are on him. Detroit has already openly said they’re taking him. If for some reason, DE becomes a bigger need, he will definitely not get pass the Browns or the Titans. Forget Milliner, think trade down and BPA which could still be a CB.

  13. Matt Says:

Looks like king should pass on a doughnut once in awhile..

  14. Dave Says:

    1. Do you really need to comment on ow the guy looks?
    2. I disagree with him to a point.

If they can get a long term deal done they can probably give up a first and a 2nd with one of them being in next years draft. IF he is 100%, I would do that.

IF …. they can not get the long term deal done or
IF they are not sure of his health.

    then don’t do it.

I have a feeling some team is going to give up the house to get him though, so I don’t think the Bucs will even be involved in the end.

  15. Anthony Gironda Says:

I would try to trade for Antonio Cromartie.

  16. Jacko101 Says:

Milner is a great pick at 13, however if he isn’t there I would rather have Alec Ogletree. I really hope he is the pick

  17. Macabee Says:

    Anthony,

Cromartie has fathered twelve children with eight women living in six states. You think he could be a Buccaneer Man. Right? I know, I know, you think that just proves he can cover. Right?

Not picking on you Anthony, just having a laugh thinking about Cromartie!

  18. Sneedy16 Says:

    @Macabee

He might have a colony worth of kids, but he is still a talented CB with little to no off the field problems (arrests or drugs). The only issue I see with him is that he doesn’t know how to use condoms. He will be broke from child support later but for right now he is a great CB. Oh yeah it’s about to be 13 children his wife is prego.

  19. Rich Says:

I agree 100% Jacko101. this Ogletree kid has quite the highlight reel. he shows so much patience and instinct along with speed he seems to be EXACTLY the type of LB we are missing. A trio of David Foster and Ogletree would help us LOADS.

  20. Sneedy16 Says:

My bad he has 10 about to have twins. Your right 12.

  21. Macabee Says:

    Sneedy,

And Anthony too. I was just taking a poke at Cromartie’s well-known reputation. I’m on record stating that I don’t necssarily subscribe to the Bucs “all captains” philosophy.

What Cromartie does privately is his business. No, I wouldn’t reject him solely for that reason. He has proven that he is a top-notch CB. And with the right kind of contract, I would take him. But Schiano and Dominik might think differently.

  22. tampabaybucfan Says:

King…one of the two Buc Quarterbacks to lose a NFC Championship game (defense allowed only 11 points).
Actually this is one of the few times I agree with him.

  23. Buc Fan #238 Says:

Since th Bucs doubled down on DTs and then DEs, you can’t argue that we did end up with at least 2 starters out of the bunch.

So I would love to see te Bucs just go ahead and draft 3 CBs in rounds 1, 2, and 3.

That’s what we need. Just do it and see who evolves into the better men.

  24. Mr Lucky Says:

    I disagree with King

Revis can be had for a 2nd round pick and Benn – God knows the Jets need WR’s.

Remmeber he’s coming off a knee injury and the contract would only be for 1 year. If he performs well great – if not the Bucs are only out 6 million and they unload Benn.

Personally I’d like to see the Bucs dangle Benn, Underwood and a 2nd round for Revis and Tebow!

  25. David Says:

King — one of only three quarterbacks to weigh more JaMarcus Russell.

Is it just me or does anyone else think his face looks like it was stung by bees?

  26. SilenceTheCritics Says:

I have to agree, I think the Bucs draft either D-Line, O-Line, LB or TE with there first pick though there is only one TE that I would take at 13.

  27. McBuc Says:

Silence, I agree as well, but I believe MD does not like to draft OL, at least I remember reading that.

  28. gotbbucs Says:

    No to Revis.
No to a CB in the 1st round.
Hell no on Antonio Cromartie. The Jets had to pay up all of his back child support before California would even allow him to move out of the state. He’s a deadbeat loadmouthed idiot.

Restructure Erik Wright, sign another first or second tier FA corner, and use a 2nd or 3rd round pick on a CB.
This year’s 1st round is going to be all about offensive and defensive linemen. That’s where the best value is going to be.

  29. Ship Wrecked in Kentucky Says:

Joe, what do you think about the Bucs going after Ed Reed and pairing him up with Barron, he would be a great teacher for Barron and Black, and moving Ronde back to corner if he stays and addressing corner in FA and draft. Is there any noise on Reed and Tampa Bay?

  30. gotbbucs Says:

    @ silence
There’s no TE’s in this draft worth anywhere close to the value of the 13th pick.

  31. SilenceTheCritics Says:

    @Gotbbucs

Eifert looks to be able to do the same kind of things Jimmy Graham can do. If he can, you are sadly mistaken if you think thats not worth the 13th pick. With a TE like that this offense should score 30+ points every game… thats assuming Freeman can be somewhat consistant.

    @McBuc

If there is one thing I’ve learned from Dom and Schiano its to always expect the unexpected.

  32. Bucnnole Says:

Shaun King is starting to look like a bloated Micheal Wilbon. I like Xavier Rhodes out of Florida State. Great size/speed combo.

  33. Sneedy16 Says:

    @gotbbucs

Tell me how you really feel?

  34. JobBucsFan 1.5 Says:

I can’t believe I’m saying this but I actually agree with King on Revis. The Jets want to much, a 1st and 2nd in this years draft, plus Revis will probably try to exploit the bank as well. Move on.

  35. gotbbucs Says:

    @ silence

If Eifert can run in the 4.5’s or low 4.6’s then I’ll rethink it, otherwise I am very against using that high of a pick on a TE. That position is being very overvalued right now IMO.

  36. Tom Says:

I would make a comment about the risks of signing a corner coming off a major knee injury to a top dollar free agent contract but the mashup pic of Shaun King and a fatter Warren Sapp to the left has given me the incentive to go to the gym tonight instead :::shudders:::

  37. Pete 422 Says:

Shaun King needs to pass on dessert. Man he’s fat!

  38. Paul Says:

Every time I see this guy, that terrible song pops in my head, “Shaun King, go get that Super Bowl ring!”
