Renting Darrelle Revis

Rockstar Bucs general manager Mark Dominik and Greg Schiano always say they’ll leave no stone unturned when it comes to considering improving their roster.
So it’s safe to assume the New Schiano Order will examine the possibility of the Jets’ reported willingness to trade cornerback Darrelle Revis. Assuming Revis recovers from his ACL injury, he’s a gargantuan upgrade from anything the Bucs have on the roster. The wounded stud corner has one year left on his contract at a flimsy $6 million, before he demands a ransom in free agency. Consider Eric Wright gobbled up $7.5 million last season, minus losing 25 percent of that for his drug suspension.
For Joe, the Bucs’ analysis of Revis must come down to how close they believe they are to making the playoffs and competing for a Super Bowl.
Joe suspects Dominik and Schiano see themselves as ready to add a few offseason pieces and win immediately, given all the emerging talent on the roster and a turning-point season lying ahead for Josh Freeman.
How much could the Jets really fetch for Revis coming off a knee injury and only signed for a year? Joe can’t imagine the price tag could be too steep. A second-round pick? A third-round pick and a backup offensive lineman, an area in which the Jets are sorely in need of depth?
Remember, Dominik has gone on record many times boasting about how his medical staff knows knees. Dominik took pride in how the team managed Cadillac Williams and Kellen Winslow, and brought back Arrelious Benn from an ACL in 2011, and scouted DaQuan Bowers’ troubles, among others.
If the Bucs determine Revis is healthy, Joe doesn’t think it would be farfetched to see the Bucs try and work a deal.
How many more games do the Bucs win last year with Revis on the field?

Freeman for Sanchez and Revis…I’d do it. Revis is by far the best player of the three, and while Sanchez is by far the worst, Josh’s mediocrity makes it a deal worth doing.

If we had Revis last year, i’d say our record is 9-7 or 10-6. If he is healthy, and the Jets aren’t asking for too much, Dominik needs to wheel and deal and make him a Buc!!!

They would win at least 4 games with him on the roster. The Giants game wouldn’t have be such a blow out. The Eagles game would have at least slow down Foles, he wasn’t afraid to throw against anyone in the secondary.

Beware the rush to trade for Darelle Revis. No doubt about his credentials – a true shutdown corner. But look very closely at the reasons the Jets would shop him now. Nobody, but nobody gets rid of young, proven, CBs that play at a high level. Not even a team that would sign Tim Tebow. They see the long-term ramifications of keeping him and the short-term opportunity to get something out of the deal now.
While the price to pay to get Revis is low – his 2013 salary is only 6mil, it is a short-term benefit unless you are prepared to pay north of 15mil to resign him in 2014. And there is a clause in his contract that says he can’t be franchised. He is a FA in 2014 and will probably play lights out to get a new contract. Not saying that this is a fait accompli like the Asomugha deal, but it could be.
Then there are some risks. After ACL surgery, will he be the same guy. Not only do you risk losing him in 2014, you have to pay a high round draft pick(s) to make the trade with the Jets. There is a mild payback in 2015 should he walk because we would get a late 3rd or 4th round comp pick should we not offset the value of his loss with other FA signings.
This sounds like an opportunity for a Super Bowl ready team that can utilize his services short-term and be willing to let him walk in 2014 or pay the highest salary in the league for a CB if they think he will keep them competitive for the next 4 or 5 years. This does not sound like the Bucs to me, more like the Pats or Denver with aging Champ Bailey.
I would stick with the script. Get a decent, experienced CB in FA – one that can stop Nick Foles from making a 10 yard pass, and a top-ranked CB in round 1 or 2 of the draft. We’re not that close, but we’re not very far off either!

The Jets shop him now because they have a TON of needs and he can help bring some of them in. They probably should not pay him 12 million a year after next year because they have too many holes. The Bucs could give up a 3rd, a CB, and an O-Lineman and easily afford the 6 million this year and if he proves awesome and healthy, they could try to re-sign him to a 4-5 year deal late in the season.
I think it is a good risk to take. They still take a CB in round 1-3 and a TE and a D-Lineman and an O-Lineman in 1-4. (they have picks)

Say no to somebody else’s damaged goods. Yes, a 2nd round pick is too high, unless they (a) have very high confidence the knee will not degrade his play, and (b) they can sign him to a multi-year contract as a condition of the trade, and (c) he’s a team-first player. I have to wonder why the Jets would be interested in getting rid of him. I’d prefer the Bucs take their chances with one free agent CB and 2 drafted CBs.

Gotta read PFT. The Jets are now saying they’re just “exploring options” ie not serious and when they first floated the idea, they said they would not take less than a 1st round pick.
What CB did you have in mind that any NFL team would want and certainly not one of our premium O-Linemen – Larsen, maybe? The jets may have traded for Tebow, but theyre not stupid!

The Jets HAVE to do something…they are rumored to be $31M over the salary cap for next year.
Rumor also has it that the Jets are looking for TWO first round picks…which they will NEVER get.
He would be worth a 1st round pick IF he is healthy and IF you could do a trade an sign to a long term deal. Both big IFs.

I remember when no one wanted to look at Drew Brees after he tore up his shoulder in San Diego. Look how that turned out for the Saints. Trust but verify, if it looks good, go with it. Revis may want that huge money in 2014′ but may take less on a longer term deal.

Revis is a great corner no doubt. But the guy comes with a lot of baggage. He wanted a new contract dam near every year. With 1 year left, you’d be taking a big risk by giving up anything for him because I have no doubts he is going to test the open market and take whoever offers him the most money. Dont think the risk and what we would have to give up is worth the reward personally. Would he help the Bucs? Absolutely. But I’d rather take my chances with someone else.

That’s exactly how this is going to end up, after this season. The Saints, Panthers, or Falcons will make a deal for Revis, win the division, and we’ll be saying to ourselves, if we’d only……..?
same as it ever was ….peoples complain because we lack enough talent to put us over the top ….and then they turn around and make excuses why we shouldn’t try to land the best CB in the entire league.
Do Tampa fans really want to win or do they just like bitching cause we don’t win. It seems more fans root for us to not succeed just so they can say later, I told you so. Yes Revis will be expensive, but as of right now he’s a better option than any CB in the first round or FA.

Bucs should trade back in the first round (If possile) and draft Banks, then trade back into the late first/early second and get one of those stud tight ends. I wouldnt give higher than a 5th for Revis

No! Niet, nine, negative, NO(Spanish) and just plain NO.
Revis does not fit “buccaneer man”. He has an ego that does not fit in this team. Maybe with the Raiders, but not us. I’ll admit at 28 he would be a really great pick up via trade, but that’s a player that can no longer be molded as he has his form set and done to what he is. I would love his talent, but there’s a reason why K2 was let go.
Stick to FA and down trade to a more solid position to pick up the best available CB.

Bucs got blown out by the Giants? I could swear they were winning that game before they blew it in the 4th quarter, Freeman rallied to tie it, and then lost by a touchdown. Not a blow out.
Also, I don’t see Dom making this move if they aren’t going to re-sign him. We aren’t a Super Bowl caliber team, so why make a move like we are one. Also, he has an attitude of wanting to be the highest paid player at his postition. Might be very talented I would have to say not worth it. Let’s draft our own Revis, only more humble.

We are not going to draft a better CB than Revis in round 1.
This would be an excellent oppurtunity to improve our team vastly.
Instantly, we would have the best Defensive player in the NFC South, and it would could to a serious position of need.
If we are really trying to make the playoffs than we should atleast offer up our 1st this year and Dotson.

The trade could get done for a 1st round pick, and if that were to happen, the Bucs better hope Revis is recovered and ready to sign a long term deal with the Bucs.
Going back to Bucrightoff’s comment and also adding in Schiano’s comments about competition at QB, wouldn’t it be ridiculous if the Bucs trade Freeman and a mid round pick for Revis and Sanchez and then sign Tebow when he hits the open market?

Go look at thehistory of draft picks and how manyplayers CTUALLY make it more han 4 ears in the NFL.

I cant speak for everyone but for me personally its not just about the draft pick, its about giving up a draft pick for a guy with a huge ego, coming off a knee surgery with only 1 year left on his contract and is already proven that he is all about the money… which means that its highly unlikely he stays with the bucs after the first year he’s here. Its about the long term ramifications. It’s just not worth it for 1 year. Thats my opinion anyways.

i fully expect revis to hold out. after the injury he sustained he will want substantial security and probably doesn’t want to be playing for a contract with his knee still on the mend. i’d be thrilled with revis the player under normal circumstances, but i don’t think this will be a year where you get 16 games of the revis that dominated the league in recent seasons.
still, if you can make it happen for legarrete blount and the 4th rounder we picked up for talib, i’d jump on it. i just don’t think the jets are that dumb now that they’ve fired tannenbaum.

No way it will only cost a second for Revis. Let’s even say it did. Would you rather use the second to draft Logan Ryan and have him for multiple seasons or part ways with it and take a guy coming off ACL surgery who would most likely walk after one season? Either way, the asking price will be too steep for Revis. There are plenty of other cheaper options available.

I’d trade our 1st round pick for Revis this year if he were to sign a long term contract. There’s no must have players for us it seems this year. Why reach for a CB when you can have the best for the same pick.
We could even trade back into the 1st with our 2nd and 4th round pick.
This really is a low risk-high reward kind of situation for us. The biggest risk is getting him to sign a long-term contract but he also kind of fits the mold of way Dom handles contracts. Pay big now and produce now. After 2-3 years, lets see what you’ve got.
The major contracts I’d think would be coming up are obviously Freeman and then McCoy or Mike Williams?

I was referring to the collapse in the 4th quarter. Eli was passing with ease on that secondary. We were only in the game for the first half before the defense fell apart. There is no reason for a QB to pass for close to 300 yards alone in the 4th. I really don’t care for Revis because it’s just a one year rental, and the draft pick that they want it’s not worth it.

All of you know Darelle Revis – the prima donna CB who wants to play when he wants to and will hold out in a heartbeat if you don’t give him a new contract as often as he wants one regardless if he just signed one the year before. Yes, that one.
And you all know Schiano, the toes on the line guy, the creator of the “Shiano Way”, that one who wants only Buccaneer men, the one that don’t play dat! Yes that one.

I’d like to add Mark Sanchez (along with Joe Flacco) are the only QBs ever to beat Peyton and Brady the same postseason. Besides Sanchez is worse than Freeman, but Freeman has only shown to be mediocre. As I said, to get a HOF level talent like Revis, you gotta make some sacrifices.
I have taking Sanchez because I’d assume the Jets would like to get out of that contract. Other trades can work as well, but if we were willing to take Sanchez I think it makes the Bucs the overwhelming front runners.

I’ve become so accustomed to the Buccaneers’ fan base, that it’s now a given to see takes by supposed “fans” that do nothing but complain or have an axe to grind. These people can’t even get along with other Bucs fans, for blank’s sake! And, yes, they even go to the point of rooting against the Bucs.
Harsh criticism is (and should be) the norm, but when specific posters, season after season after season, do nothing but accentuate the negative and spew forth endless ignorance and ridicule, it becomes a genuine embarrassment to be associated with such “fans”.

The Jets are shopping Revis because they are way over the salary cap and will not be able to work out a deal for Revis to stay anyway. It’s the same situation that the Chargers were in with Vincent Jackson. If Revis stays stubbon we can use the 4th round we got for Talib and another future pick to scoop this talent up.

Its true that this would be a risky move. But Dom is good with knees. Remember? Revis is the ideal corner for our style of defense. He would instantly make us Super Bowl contenders. No joke. Drew Brees and Matty Ice are both in our divison. They are incredible QB’s. We MUST get one of the best CB’s in the NFL to help us make the playoffs again. (Not to mention Cam!-but David and Barron are good security to stop him)
Will we do it? Probably not. Too many issues regarding his contract.
Could we afford it? Actually we could. With Quncys 6 million and Wrights 7 million, we could easily replace Wright with Revis, and use our saved money from Quincy to add to an extension for the next few years. But Revis is crazy. And greedy. I think his wife keeps naggin him. So he will want a crazy salary. Like 5-7 years 80-100 million. Seriously. Do we want to tie our entire franchise and mortgage our future for one CB? Or we do trust Coachs ability to develop players? (by the way, His Rutgers team this year was a top 10 defense, and Rutgers is gonna produce multiple good draft picks this year-all with players who were not elite prospects coming out of high school. To see Rutgers this year, is just more proof that Coach Schiano knows football.)

I wouldn’t trade a pair of those nippless boobs for Mark Sanchez. Freeman has his moments, but Sancheez is useless. I couldn’t understand the pick to begin with. He was halfass’d at USC for 1 season and the Jets reached about 8 rounds up to get him from where he should have been. The guy might make a backup in the Arena League.
Sancheez belongs with the Piscatelli’s and Clayton’s of the world. Tebow is better than him, not saying much.

It would be nice to get a shutdown corner in the Draft, but you have to take what it gives you and that guy may not be there early. May be a mid round pick that finds this year’s diamond. I like Rambo and think he will be a good safety to pair with Barron. I like Elam too. I know I keep saying it but those guys are relentless hitters. Elam will even take out his own players. I think the Jets are placing a very high trade value on Revis that they won’t get, because Mike Shanahan has traded all his picks away last time.

Revis is a once in a generation type of player.
Trading our #1 this year and the extra 4th would be well worth the price. We could than use our cap space and sign Revis to a mega deal. Put incentives, and hold out clauses. Mark D. is smart when it comes to contracts. Maybe it took being burned a couple of times to figure it out, but I believe in his ability to work deals, just not necessarily the man who is getting the deal (thankfully we have Butch Davis and Schiano’s new personality requirements).
If we can trade a couple picks for Revis, than we should do it.
Joe- you remembeer getting Simeon Rice, and what that did.
You often speak of the Calvin Johnson trade up gaffe.
Why not go for it for once.

Please no to Tebow. If Josh is going to succeed, bringing in Tebow would be about as counter productive to that as possible. Tebow cannot play in Florida unless he’s the starter because people will basically demand it. Do that and Freeman is guaranteed to walk.

There not going to trade him for anything less than insane like 2 first round picks. thats why they said they are just exploring the option. I wouldnt want him anyway, the long term risks are more than the short term payoffs. find a couple of corners in free agency and/or the draft and go from there.

There is no way they will part with him for no less than 2 1st round picks. That’s what it took to get Keyshawn Johnson and Dom is not giving that up for him. What some people don’t understand that Blount will not be under contract to be traded.

Don’t do it. The guy is coming off an ACL tear, he’s on the wrong side of 30, and he’ll cost a king’s ransom. I thought the Wright contract last year was crazy. He wasn’t even good in Detroit. A Revis deal won’t be as bad, but it won’t be worth it either. Big name signings are for teams that are right on the cusp. The Bucs aren’t that. Save the money and build through the draft.

Make the move….please….It seems to me that CB’s seem to be the “bad boys” of football across the board. If all he has is a rehabilitated ACL I’d take two of them.
