Rich Gannon Takes Tim Brown To Task

January 22nd, 2013

Former Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon flatly stated Tim Brown’s suggestion that former Raiders coach Bill Callahan threw the Super Bowl against the Bucs is wrong.

Earlier, Joe brought word that former Oakland Raiders wide receiver Tim Brown suggested former Raiders head coach Bill Callahan threw the Super Bowl against the Bucs because, Brown implied, Callahan was indebted to Chucky and didn’t want to coach the Raiders.

That is such a preposterous statement, Joe doesn’t know where to begin.

Today on his mid-day radio show, “The Blitz,” co-hosted with popular sports radio personality Adam Schein, heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio, former Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon took Brown to task for spreading nonsense and detailed why he thought the Bucs manhandled the Raiders to win the Super Bowl. And it had nothing to do with any coach forcing his team to lay down.

“I don’t’ know that the gameplan really changed. I think what happened was we talked about the best way to beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and we thought that being physical and running the ball, but that was not who we were.

“We tried to run the football early on and we didn’t have much success.

“We didn’t change enough of our plays as far as verbiage at the line of scrimmage. It was a carryover from what Jon Gruden had as far as our run checks and Warren Sapp and Derrick Brooks were calling out our runs. That took us out of our no huddle package a little bit. Then when we fell behind, we probably threw too much.

“You win together and you lose together and there was a culture and environment in Oakland at the time that was difficult to compete for championships and a struggle to win on Sundays and I think that is a struggle today. An attitude, an entitlement that we are the Oakland Raiders, the silver and black, all we have to do roll up on Sunday and we will beat you.

“Bill Callahan is a good football coach and a good man and I don’t think thing ever [would] intentionally ever [throw a game], based on a relationship with a former coach… we had too much invested.”

Gannon also said that Barrett Robbins, the Raiders starting center who went on a trip to Mexico and weirded out and was unable to play in the Super Bowl, was hardly the only Raiders to player to “party in Mexico” prior to kickoff.

Glad to hear it. I lost a lot of respect for Tim Brown because there is no way Callahan tried to do anything remotely what Brown implied.
The coaches failed in not changing the verbiage enough but that is about it. In hindsight and seeing how the Bucs dominated… the Raiders were just simply not going to beat that defense on that day even if they played 10 times.

Tim will now come back and say Gannon was in on it. This has the potential of getting really personal.

  3. Theodore Says:

Damn, I was hoping Brown was right, if only so we could finally end the stupid debate on which coach deserves more credit for the Super Bowl, Gruden or Dungy?

    The answer is Callahan!

  4. holymoly Says:

tim – fair catch brown . What an idiotic rant . Plain and simple , he and the raiders got spanked . How come it took him 10 years to come to this conclusion ? Because he is an idiot !

  5. AtlBucsFan Says:

The Raiders had never played against a defense like the Buc’s that year in terms of speed, talent and reaction times. I don’t think the result would have changed under any circumstances.

  6. OB Says:

Joe, as I said in the other post, he is a Notre Dame grad, something was in the water there for both him and Manti and his phantom lady. Check it out and win a Pulitzer Prize.

  7. Ramdog Says:

Geeze what a whiner. Even if that was the case and it is NOT sack up and acknowledge you lost the game on your own. The bottom line is the only way to beat the BUCS of that year was power running up the middle. You couldn’t pass on them because of the pass rush and we covered all the gaps in our zones in the Cover 2 Masterfully. Basically the only way was power running or slowly work it down the field and pray that there wasn’t a screw up along the way (penalty, tackle for loss etc.).

Add to that their Defense wasn’t that good and our QB was playing awesome during that stretch of games and we were very hard to beat.

I guess the 49ers just laid down for us and that was why we beat them 33 – 6 and the Eagles decided to loose in their building 27 – 10. Also McNabb felt sorry for Ronde Barber and threw that Ball right in his bread basket. Geeze some of these athletes are freakin idiots.

One final thing if the terminology wasn’t changed wouldn’t the Raider Defense know our terminology too ??

    Maybe Gruden changed it up

  9. Miguel El Magnifico Says:

I thought this was just a local interest story, but it’s getting national air play. Watching the highlights of all those picks, it looked like the Bucs knew the plays. Gannon said that Sapp and Brooks were calling out all the run plays. I remember Lynch saying that he knew all the passing audibles.

Sounds like superior coaching on Gruden’s part. I wonder how he lost the locker room the next year? Pound that rock!!

  10. Andrew 1 Says:

Great. Just another reason to discredit that fact that we won that Super Bowl fair and square. Now it makes it seem like we didn’t truly deserve it at all. is our fault that the raiders used the exact same offense that Gruden ran with them the previous year? No. If they didn’t want us to have an unfair advantage of knowing there playbook then they should of changed it all together. Is our fault that Callahan supposedly threw the game? NO. whatever, its our Super Bowl victory and nobody can take it away from us.

  11. J 2.0 Says:

Wow, Jerry Rice now taking Tim Brown’s side. Ridiculous.

  12. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Ramdog

Great post. I agree, Sack up.

  13. Macabee Says:

I am not buying the fact that Callahan sabotaged the game for some nefarious reason to delibrately lose the game. I am starting to buy that he did something that pretty stupid by changing the game plan a couple of days before the game.We need to hear from Callahan as to why he felt that was necessary.

Jerry Rice, who I respect, came out to verify what Tim said and while he would not go as far as Brown, believed it to be extremely odd that Callahan would do such a thing – so odd that it could lead some players to think it was sabotage.

I’m waiting to find if the game plan was changed before Barrett Robbins left or after. In my mind, big difference. I’m still not thinking sabotage, more likely sheer stupidity!

  14. Buc Fan #238 Says:

The QB of the team just said it was untrue.

I am pretty darn sure that the QB knows a heck of a lot more about the game plan than the me-me-me wideouts.

Must have been the racism creeping in from MLK speech yesterday that is getting these boyz riled up.

  15. Joe and Rachael's wedding planner Says:

Jerry is also backing Tim Brown. YOUR BETTER THAN THIS JERRY! Being a sore loser is way beneath him.

  16. PRBucFan Says:

Even if he did change the game plan, it’s not like the Raiders players didnt try 110% to win this game.

    We won fair and square

  17. SombreoBro Says:

Give me a break, we spanked ‘em. Too bad if they weren’t smart enough to change up their plays/audibles.

    Also:
I wanted to click on the yellow button and hear what Gannon had to say, but all I could find was an orange one.

    What’s up with that?

  18. squadoosh Says:

Robbins backup had been with the Raiders for 4 years and started 14 games the year they went to the AFC championship with Gruden. The guy was almost as good as Robbins…the excuses are total BS.
Also the Raiders were down 20 to 3 early in the third quarter which would make any team give up on the run. The problem I would have with the coach if I were Brown was to keep any language that Gruden might recognize.
    Bitter Brown!

  19. JobBucsFan 1.5 slim Says:

The Raiders had an entire season to change any verbiage and signals before they faced their old coach, the Bucs new coach in the Super Bowl. For all the years of struggle, this is the only real thing Tampa Bay Buc fans have to be proud of, is winning a SB. Just to have some sore sport ex-players try to marginalize it and say it was a fixed win 10 years later. Plus these 2 played their twilight years and retired as Bucs. Some gratitude huh?

  20. Curmudgeon Says:

    Jerry Rice is a douche.

  21. fernando Says:

Wow!!! 10 yrs after.Tim Tampa’s defense jumped on all the throws. Not even Jesus with his disciples could beat that defense that day or year.Tim you just squandered a great career and HOF votes.

  22. SacBucs Says:

Lynch also said there doing all the same plays we prepared for in practice. You dam dummies are so smart!

If Brooks and Sapp knew which way the run was going doesnt that make it easy to stop. Dahh
The only way the had a chance was run up the middle on us or throw down field to Porter on any of our db’s but we knew the calls. Interception to the house.

Raiders offensive players couldnt tackle the intercepting db’s because they were in aww..Like how the hell they know the game plan.. Lmao jokes over!

You posters are asking the wrong question like normal humans. I thought you nerds was so smart!

Acid tripping: How do you attack a coach with the offfense he built? Use the same dam verbaige, audibles and gameplan but you expect to win! dumbass.

All the Raiders had to do was: Do all the same shh with diffrent terminoligy. Script the first 15 plays from another playbook to confuse us. Run a bootlegg bc our D had problems with mobile qb’s and throw it up over our lil db’s!

Those are questions I asked myself Joe right after we Dogged walk’em!

Believe what you want until you findout it was a lie!
Look at ya boy Lance Arm-roids!
