Are The Bucs Serious About Landry Jones?

So early this week, Bucs coach Greg Schiano made no bones about how the Bucs want to give embattled quarterback Josh Freeman competition. Schiano was less than forthcoming how the Bucs would acquire said quarterback.
Joe knows the Bucs really do want competition for Freeman, and if that means drafting a guy in the middle rounds of the draft, so be it.
That’s why a little nugget on Twitter from Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune was so interesting when he typed that Bucs fans should watch and become familiar with Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones in tonight’s Cotton Bowl because the Bucs are kicking the tires on possibly drafting the four-year Sooners starter.
Joe doesn’t know what to make of this. Jones, once thought to be a high draft pick, has seen his stock steadily decline the past two seasons.
Joe does know that Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik greatly respects the opinion of Sooners coach Bob Stoops. After all, it was largely based on Stoops’ high recommendation that Dominik drafted defensive tackle Gerald McCoy.
Also, Dominik is fond of Big XII and Big Ten players, having used high draft picks on players from those conferences in Freeman, GMC, Adrian Clayborn, Roy Miller and Lavonte David.
Joe has no clue if the Bucs really would draft Jones in a middle round. But it doesn’t surprise Joe that Dominik might be watching Jones with a sharp eye.

Up until this year, I would have said pass on Jones because he had never led the Sooners to a comeback victory. He showed much more poise this year, and led them to 2 comeback victories this year, but he wouldn’t come in here and compete for the starter job right away. The problem with Big 12 quarterbacks is that they pretty much suck in the NFL, Bradford being the lone exception and the jury is still out on him.

Seriously doubt this is smoke. The Bucs have to be thinking about drafting another QB. You can debate on where in the draft they are wanting to draft it but anyone with any intelligence who watched Freeman play can’t be convinced Freeman is the future. I think Schiano is competent enough to know Freeman needs some serious competition to kick him in the ass.

Potentially a good, mid-round pick to develop and compete with Freeman. If Freeman wins the job and becomes a franchise QB, good trade bait in a year or two.

Been saying for weeks that the Bucs will likely be looking at Landry Jones along with Zac Dysert and Ryan Nassib in rounds 3 or 4. I think they are seeing the value in using a decent pick on a developmental QB who can at the very least become Freeman’s backup, and at best become the starter in a couple years if he can outperform Freeman.
If they are indeed looking at Jones I believe this is a very smart move. He came on extremely strong the last half of this season and the light seemed to finally turn on for him. He’s looked great. I’ll be watching closely tonight to see if that continues.

Ah ok. I wont comment on that because I dont have a clue about who they would potentially be looking at. But I can almost guarantee you they are looking. Dont really know much about Landry either.

There’s no need to waste a 1st-4rd rd pick on a QB when we got some real needs outside of that position. I would wait for a better QB class before I waste anotherpick on a quaterback. Jones in the fourth round I could see mabey, but before that no way. I’m not sold on anyone enough in this draft to go earlier.

That would be a horrible pick.
Landry Jones is slower than Josh, with a weaker arm, and with less potential.
Why would we draft a big, slow QB?! Horrible idea!!
I would try to sign Jason Campbell or another top notch backup. A veteran! Not a rookie.
However, drafting a good young QB would not upset me.
Eric Reid announced he’s coming out. He’s bigger than Barron but just as slow. He played FS at LSU, but I bet he will be converted to SS because he’s good in the box, and he he lacks top end speed.
Although, I love the idea of drafting a stud FS to go with Barron. I don’t want another slow safety. We need a true center fielder to go with Barron.
Tryanne Matthieu in the 3rd? Who’s down?
And please, keep an eye out for ex-Auburn RB Michael Dyer. He would also be a late round steal.
Where is Blount going? I guarantee Pittsburgh, Detroit, and Green Bay offer him a contract! And we will watch him make a Pro Bowl!

The Bucs may be the worst QB team in the history of the league. Is there any other team that has been so poor at this position for so many years? Freeman is the best we’ve ever had and the jury is still out. It’s time to start drafting and developing QBs just like they would any other position. The Bucs have spent draft picks on QBs so rarely — the last 3 I can remember are Freeman, Josh Johnson, and Bruce Gradkowski. Have there been any others in the last 10 years? No wonder the position has sucked for for so long. Drafting a QB in round 3-4 would make a whole lot of sense if not for the glaring needs at CB and impact pass-rusher. Arguably, TE and RB (assuming Blount is gone) are greater needs too… but they need to draft a QB at some point.

We have so much money in the cap, I think the bucs front office will address the secondary issues in free agency, so they can draft for the sake of building up the team depth.

I’ve been a huge OU fan my entire life and I really enjoy it when I see some of my Sooners get the chance to make a NFL roster with my Buccaneers, but having watched every collegiate that Landry Jones has played in, I really don’t feel comfortable with the idea on him in a Buccaneers uniform. A lot of people (in Oklahoma) have tried comparing him to Sam Bradford, since Landry broke pretty much all of his records, but stats aren’t everything. One big difference between the two is that Sam was really good at making the right decisions (in college) and hitting his receivers in stride, both of which Landry struggle with. The big thing for Landry is just how athletic his receivers are and their ability to adjust to balls thrown behind them. Give him a poor supporting class and receivers that struggle to get open, he’s going to have issues. Another issue is his tendency to panic if he even “sniffs” pressure. Now Landry Jones has a pretty good arm and he can make most of the NFL throws, but his deep balls tend to sail on him. If Landry has a good supporting cast and gets a good position coach that can work out his accuracy (which isn’t terrible, just inconsistent) and pocket poise, he could have some potential in the NFL, but if he is rushed into the job, I’m not sure how well he’ll work out.

The issues in the secondary can’t be solved in FA alone. They need 2-3 new starting caliber CBs and can’t really afford more than 1 in FA (assuming they want to spend anything at other positions too). So that means they’re probably going to need to draft 1 or 2 CBs in round 1-3.

He is perfect. You can draft him and let him sit for 2 years. Freeman can play next year and then get franchised for one more and then you have trade bait like what the Falcons did with Schaub and the Packers did with Flynn. If Freeman stinks up the joint he’s gone anyway and you have a QB who did nothing but study.

I think you’re right. Landry would fit right in with Freeman. Throws the ball wonderfully and then out of nowhere he throws a pick. But like Freeman, in time maybe he could get better!

I’m with Oklahomabucfan on his prolific opinions on Landry and especially “stats aren’t everything.”
Bob Stoops is a great coach and his brothers aren’t bad either.
Forget Landry. Keep an eye on those A&M offensive tackles. Freshman QB’s don’t win the Heisman without a lot of help.

Ouch! The mistake by the lake.
There are 3 great OT’s in the draft. That LT, Taylor Lewan from Michigan did pretty well against Jadeveon Clowney (JCP) and might be the 2nd off the board. If ever the Bucs could pick up a stud OT, it might be in this draft.

Miguel, I think it’s possible the Bucs sign Jake Long in free agency thereby freeing that first pick up for a CB or DT (or possibly even a TE if certain reports are to be believed).

I was thinking of canceling my NFL Ticket and just becoming a Seahawk fan but since Kelly is going to Cleveland, I’ll renew and maintain my long distance connection with Tampa Bay.
Did anyone notice the halftime adjustments in the Fiesta Bowl last night. KS came out with a great game plan, but Kelly check mated a great KS team and coaching staff.
I noticed during the game that when KS was dominating, Chip had kind of a bemused look on his face. Compare to Schiano’s roid rage look where he’s looking to blame the refs or a player when losing.
Markus Mariota had a horrible game, reminiscent of Freeman vs Dallas Chip took the heat for his freshman QB even though he knew the negotiations for his future livelihood begin today. Kelly showed a lot of restraint not running up the score, passing up several FG’s and slowing down the pace on a very good but tired and outmatched Kansas State team.

Just pulling your chain a little about Landry. I’m sure he would fine as a developing QB. I disagree that he is an NFL ready now QB that could step right in and take Freemans place. Most analyst agree that that QB is not in this draft. But It would not bother me at all if they are interested in him. NFLDraftScout has him rated as a late 2nd or early 3rd round pick. I personally think we have greater needs that early, but like you say, I won’t get to choose!

Landry jones aint competition for freeman people lets be real. It’s a stretch to say he’s even competition for Orlavsky. Johnnie manziel is a beast tho. Dude isn’t a doug flutie or jeff garcia type. To make a more recent comparison to me he reminds me of a young mike vick coming out of vtech. He’s not quite as fast, but man can he make people miss without trying and he’s still fast as hell. His accuracy was better then vick’s tho. Really interested in seeing what this kid can do in the NFL When he get’s there.
