Ron Turner Leaving Bucs For FIU

January 3rd, 2013

For weeks, it appeared Bucs consigliere Butch Davis was heading for Florida International University to fill the void left by the firing of Mario Cristobal. Instead, it was another member of the Bucs organization.

Per Joe’s good friend Brett McMurphy of ESPN, FIU has actually hired Bucs QB coach Ron Turner, not Davis, so McMurphy Twittered.

@McMurphyESPN: Tampa Bay Bucs QB coach & former Illinois coach Ron Turner will be named FIU’s coach, sources told @ESPN

For Joe this is not a big loss. Joe was never a fan on Turner, the brother of Norv Turner. Aside from the immortal Kurt Kittner, name a quarterback that Turner developed. Rex Grossman? Please.

Turner was bad with the Bears, mediocre at Illinois and upon his return to the Bears, even worse.

Losing P.J. Fleck was bad. The potential of losing Mike Sullivan is awful. Losing Turner, no biggie.

Joe wishes Turner success.

Hmmm maybe now we can bring in someone to actually make Free consistent.

I wonder which vacated position John McNulty will step into, WR coach or QB coach. I know nothing has happened yet, but I’m pretty much assuming that is an inevitable hire. Now we just have to pray that someone else wows Chicago and Sullivan returns as the offensive coordinator….some level of cotinuity is crucial for the development of these players, especially Freeman.

Go or bad they will still use it as excuse 101.

This all sucks from a continuity stand point. I would enjoy one year with relatively the same staff.

Hopefully the new hires prove fruitful.

    Ditto Joe.

    @PRBucFan

Good luck to whoever gets that job. LoL

    Joe,

Could you please post a link for the Bucs Falcons game.

  8. Brandon Says:

John McNulty named new Bucs QB coach. Set in stone.

  9. Brandon Says:

Joe, that last sentence about Sullivan is confusing. You either left out a word, or a comma with an assumed subject.

Punctuation is pretty important, just ask grandma. What sentence do you think she would rather hear? “Let’s eat, Grandma!” or “Let’s eat Grandma!”? Personally, I prefer the first sentence. I find the elderly to be stringy and not particularly tasty.

    Set in stone???

    Big Marlon B,

Sullivan’s track resume and track record aren’t particularly long or good. OC for one season, mixed results. Starting QB threw 9 INTs in last 3 games. Was called out by an opposing player for having “tells” in his offense. And worst of all, getting shutout by the worst defense (statistically) in NFL history.

The Bears are built to win now. They don’t have time, nor do they want to wait around a few years until Sullivan gets his feet under him and figures it out. His chance of getting the job, when compared to the resumes and accumen of the coaches also interviewed, is next to nothing.

  12. Brandon Says:

    PRBucFan,

Pretty much. Don’t you remember how badly Schiano wanted McNulty let out of his contract to coach QBs or be the OC when he was hired? The Cardinals wouldn’t do it. Now McNulty doesn’t have a contract and there’s two positions that McNulty has spent his entire career coaching (WRs and QBs). He’ll be here in some capacity. After seeing the Cards QBs he coached this past year, I’m not sure it’ll be a good thing.

  13. kgh Says:

Maybe this will open the door to get Norv turner. Norv has had success over the years as OC, he can be the QB coach.

  14. kgh Says:

@ Brandon : “He’ll be here in some capacity. After seeing the Cards QBs he coached this past year, I’m not sure it’ll be a good thing”.

I see your point, however, he didn’t have anyone to work with. Kevin Kolb was inconsistent and was hurt often. Ryan Lindley, John skelton and Brian Hoyer are not starting caliber players, so there was a lack of talent. Josh Freeman has his flaws but he’s far better than the qb’s they had in Arizona.

  15. Have A Nice Day Says:

@Brandon – Sullivan isn’t going anywhere, if only for the reasons you’ve listed.

He is locked into the second year of his contract unless the Bucs decide to part ways.

Is the “Set in Stone” rumor anything more than your word?

  16. Snook Says:

    McNulty – QB coach
    Sullivan – OC

  17. SirustheVirus Says:

I would like to steal Jerry Sullivan from the Jaguars. Larry Fitzgerald wanted that guy as there Wrs coach. Then put McNulty in at the QB coach position.

  18. McBuc Says:

@Haveaniceday…The Bucs can only block him from teams trying to hire him as OC or as a position coach. The Bucs cannot block him from a head coachng position. I beleive Chicago will hire a more experienced guy, but the Bucs have no say so on it at all…unless they throw a bBrinks truck at him.

  19. FlBoy84 Says:

Saw Atlanta signed their OC to an extension to keep him a while longer, curious if the Bucs follow a similar path with Sullivan.
