Michael Bennett’s Brother Wants To Reunite

December 27th, 2012

The Bennett brothers will get to debate new eight-figure, free-agent contracts around the Easter dinner table this spring. That is certain.

The Bucs’ Michael Bennett, 27, is a versatile, effective defensive end. Those guys get paid big-time in free agency. Giants tight end and brother Martellus Bennett, 25, has had a career year this season with 54 catches for 611 yards. With his stunning size and athleticism, (6-6, 265) someone will make it rain on him, too.

Interestingly, Martellus was talking/dreaming yesterday about playing alongside Micheal — at the Meadowlands, per NJ.com.

Another wild-card factor? His older brother, Michael Bennett, a defensive end with the Buccaneers, will also be a free agent this offseason. They played together growing up and at Texas A&M, and would like to do so on this level, too.

“So it’s just one of those things, you never know what is going to happen,” Bennett said. “I would love to stay here, maybe even get him to come out here. But if not, we’re both looking to play together, at least for a couple years in the NFL like we did in college. I’ll try to get him to come here first, or whatever happens with him.”

This is very interesting to Joe. Why not make the opposite happen, and get Martellus Bennett to come to Tampa?

His experience and success in the Giants offense would make it a near seamless transition to what the Bucs and Mike Sullivan are operating. Plus, he’s a more versatile talent than Dallas Clark. Giants GM Jerry Reese even called him a stud blocker, via ESPN.

“I think he’s going to really help our run game, because he’s a tremendous blocker. We think he could be a good receiver, but what he gives us as a receiver is going to be a bonus. We think he can really help us get our run game going, because he’s the blocking tight end that we haven’t had. Jake [Ballard] was an okay blocker, Bear [Pascoe] has been an okay blocker. But Martellus could be a dominating blocker, and that’s what we haven’t had, really for a while. We haven’t had a dominating guy since, like, Howard Cross.”

Martellus Bennett also fits the young-free-agent mold that rockstar general manager Mark Dominik prefers.

This will be darn interesting to watch when the free agency bell rings in March.

That was my first thought too. The Bucs need the TE and the NYG do not need a DE. Makes more sense for him to come to Tampa. I could see it. They have no money tied up in TEs really and re-signing Bennett at DE might cost a little less if the brother comes here. Plus they do not really have much tied up in DEs because Clayborn and Bowers are on rookie contracts.

  2. JonBuc Says:

I agree with your sentiment, Joe! I was hoping The Bucs would have signed him this year. The money they would save on taxes alone would be substantial….not that these guys think about that kind of stuff….but one day they will :). Dallas Clark has been a bit underwhelming given his pedigree and the fact Manning pushed for Jacob Tamme over him in Denver does say a lot.

  3. Raphael Says:

It will be interesting to see if the Rock Star can work his Magic !!!

  4. 1976Buc Says:

I will be very surprised if Bennett/Bennett even consider Tampa. Sounds like the Bucs Bennett is gone, whether to NJ or somewhere else with his brother.

  5. 911bucs Says:

That would be awesome to get Martellus Bennett. He’s on a superbowl caliber team, I bet he stays with NYG

  6. Ian's Gay Lisp & Ron's Drinking Problem Says:

i don’t want that brain dead idiot on my team….he should be washing my car

  7. Deminion Says:

My issue with Micheal Bennett is tht he disappears in games

  8. Ramdog Says:

Joe great idea !!! and the good news is we have cap room especially when we get rid of Eric Wright and Quincy Black we should have between 20 – 30 million left. Plenty to sign the brothers Bennett and hopefully a good corner or two.

The draft is deep in Corner and D-lineman this year so we may want to keep all our draft picks and load up on them. Also an offensive tackle preferably a left one so we could move Penn to the right side. We can probably get a big possession type slot receiver too later in the draft or off the waiver wire. You know one of those guys who are strong, big bodies, great hands and no fear to have the snot knocked out of them when they go over the middle.

Come on Dominik prove you are a “Rockstar” GM, silence the critics and put together back-to-back good drafts and free-agent signings. The important thing is not to overpay like he did for Wright.

WTF was he thinking did he and Wright go on an Aderall bender or something before he signed him. No one really understood that signing especially with Finnegan and Carr out there. Of course, I think Finnegan went with Fisher so we were screwed there but why Wright and why that juicy contract ?? Some scouting reports had him as the 39th best free agent corner – LOL.

  9. Justin Says:

    People COME ON!!!!

Martellus Bennett is an absolute loafer. Do you guys remember his futile efforts on Dallas? Almost the total opposite of his brother. And a seamless transition to our offense? GIVE ME A BREAK! Our guys now are still struggling with it.

We don’t want Martellus. Imagine his effort on the field after paying him a boatload of cash.

NO WAY. Spend money somewhere else.

  10. SilenceTheCritics Says:

If Dom feels the need to bring in Martellus then by all means go for it. Free can use all the weapons he can get. However, Signing OUR Bennett should be first and foremost on the list. Absolutely, can NOT let him test free agency. If we do, next season will already be off to a bad start.

  11. Have A Nice Day Says:

Martellus is a great blocker, but lets not act as if he is any upgrade to our pass offense. He would aid the run game, but pass catching has never been his forte.
    I wouldn’t mind him though.

  12. Macabee Says:

Michael Bennett and Martellus on the same team and through a mutual negotiation – a GM’s worst nightmare! Not gonna happen. Anybody care to show me precedence fo this in the NFL. I remember this conversation regarding the Steelers and moving up in the draft to bring the Pouncey twins together. Never attempted, never happened!

  13. Vic Says:

Dude, how can you equate free agency and the Pouncey brothers in the draft.

And to Justin, Joe’s got a quote in here from the Giants GM calling him a superior blocker, and he caught 50+ balls. Get real.

  14. princespanky Says:

He would be an obvious upgrade and wouldn’t need to learn the offense from scratch. Joe is on to something and he is worth a look at least.

  15. SilenceTheCritics Says:

If the Giants choose to let Martellus go, that should tell you that they don’t think to highly of him. It’s not like they have a plethora of TEs on that team. Either way, it cant hurt to take a look at him.

  16. stevek Says:

Too bad Dom spent 2 4th round picks on a TE that sucks.

We could’ve traded that exact 4th round pick for Demico Ryans

No, Joe, Dom is not getting a pass just yet.

As for the Bennett Brothers, I bet they rather play for a Manning Brother over FreeFallman any day. Players want to win, they also want to play for a Leader of men, clearly Josh is not, as “miscommunications” are to blame and not his overall lack of ability.

55 starts and counting, when will the QB postion be held accountable.

Our pass Defense is only slightly less putrid than our QB play.

  17. SilenceTheCritics Says:

    @SteveK

Apparently, Freeman can do no wrong. It’s all the defense, and the coaching, and the game plan and the play calling and a horrid O-line. Freeman is not to blame for anything. He is only 24 years old and absolutely is a future super bowl winner and hall of famer because he broke meaningless historic team records.

  18. Raphael Says:

Lmao at the stupid post ^^^^^^^^^^

  19. SilenceTheCritics Says:

    lmao at this crotch rider^^^^^^^^^^^^

  20. NJBucsFan Says:

I wanted to sign him last year when he was a free agent with a little market…

  21. thegregwitul Says:

First things first; we have to open up the checkbook and pay Michael Bennett, which I think we’ll do. Martellus, of course, will mention getting Michael to play with him in New York, in part because I’m sure his preference is staying with a contender (albeit, with a fat new contract), but also because it doesn’t do him any favors to be openly clamoring playing for a different team. You keep that kind of stuff private.

Hopefully, we get both Michael and Martellus Bennett in pewter next season. I think he would help Josh Freeman tremendously.

  22. bucfanjeff Says:

I would love to have them both.

  23. stevek Says:

55 starts is more a chance than most would get.

Freeman has this game to decide if the Bucs will keep him for next year.

We can’t sell tickets as is, and if you keep a “sinking ship” of a QB in town, then less and less people will buy tickets.

I hope we can get a consistent QB, we need one.

@ raphael, you cheer sub par play like no other, I hope for your sake we can get a franchise QB in here worthy of such praise.

  24. pick6 Says:

the brothers barber often talked about hoping to play together in the pros, but in the end they both did what was best for their careers….well, except Tiki at the end when he committed double career suicide by simultaneously burning his bridges inside and outside of football.

  25. Andrew Says:

I think there is a 50/50 chance we sign Michael Bennett. he is a good pass rusher, but he is NOT a dominating pass rusher. plus you have to figure that the best year of his career came during contract year. will his play slip once he gets that big new contract? idk. and you also have to mention that his presence on the team is that of a team with the worst sack total in the NFL. so has he really made that much of an improvement to our team in terms of sacks. no. if we sign him great, but if we don’t sign him we will survive.

  26. Raphael Says:

    Lmao @ Stevek. Srsly ?

Sub par play by who ? The receivers or the OL…or the coaches ? Or Freeman ?

    Or all of the above…

Some of you remind me of little kids who want everything right now, and they cry when they don’t get it…

  27. Miguel El Magnifico Says:

    Raphael Remora^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^LOL!!

Martellus would be an upgrade but the best TE of the next decade will be available in a couple years, Colt Lyerla-Mighty Ducks.

  28. mikemalarkey Says:

why didnt we sign him last year? i wanted him last year

  29. paddy Says:

    GET HIM!

  30. PRBucFan Says:

If Dom doesn’t sign Bennet than that alone should get him the boot. How long have we been drafting DE to no avail and than finally we have a dominating one whose only getting better as the years go on fall in our lapse??? It would be the most idiotic move he’s made yet.

  31. Patrick Says:

If Dom doesn’t sign back Michael Bennett, his a$$ better be fired!

  32. teacherman777 Says:

    I wanted him LAST YEAR!!

    Wtf??
