Finding “Weeds In The Roses”

December 20th, 2012

Derrick Brooks talked about emerging quitters and Eric Wright’s recent Twittering

There’s no doubt the New Schiano Order will be looking to sniff out loafers over the final 11 days of the season, guys who aren’t behaving like “Buccaneer men” in practice or in games.

Bucs icon Derrick Brooks acknowledged some players adopt a quitters mentality when things go south in December, especially when it’s a new regime. “If there are some weeds in the roses, they’re not going to come up on Day 1,” Brooks said on The Steve Duemig Show yesterday on WDAE-AM 620.

Brooks said he experienced that quickly in the NFL.

“I’ll never forget that in 1995. That type of talk was going on,” Brooks said of players having a quitters mentality.

“Here we were 6-7, had a chance to win out here and at least go 8-8 and guys are talking about vacation. I’m like, ‘what are they here talking about, in practice!” shouted Brooks, who went on to say he was stunned by players chatting about U-Hauls and more.

Speaking of hidden weeds, Brooks also was flabbergasted by Eric Wright Twittering about going on a weekend spa vacation in California on Saturday, a day before the Bucs were in New Orleans.

“Why? Even if you are doing it why? The season’s going on,” Brooks said of Wright’s Twittering. “Why? You know, a little bird on your shoulder. Why? As Coach Edwards [would say], ‘think before you hit Tweet or send.'”

Brooks said Wright should have kept his private business to himself. “Your team is out there. You know, your team is trying to keep the ship, you know, straight. They’re fighting.”

Dom may need to cut his losses on EW. And EW also describes his play this year. I think we do end up keeping him and re doing his contract. Wish list for this offseason: two corners. I don’t care where we get them free agency, trade or draft. One if not both of them has to be 6’4 or taller. We need a corner that can re route and but these guys at line for this scheme to really work. EW can play nickel and LJ dime. Then I would like a safety but I think Black is good enough to have next year if Ronde doesn’t come back. A pass rush specialist would be nice and a big TE with good hands

Couldn’t have said any better. Gotta love DB!

  3. tim Says:

i agree 100%. I just cant see Wright here next year. Esp since they can cut him without owing him all that $.

  4. ALSTOTTSMART! Says:

I’d cut bait with Wright. Add 2-3 new corners via the draft and free agency.

  5. Andrew Says:

I echoed Brook’s sentiments about a week ago by saying that’s why its not always a bad thing to go on a long losing streak. it helps to ensure that we get EVERY LAST WEED among the roses as they will surely pop up during bad times. DB is a smart guy who would be a great addition to our coaching staff if it were at all possible.

Eric Wrong should take a long term vacation from this team.
Just a thought: If regis Benn is such a specimen why not experiment with
him at corner. He should have the size and speed to compete and could probably enjoy being the hitter instead of the hitee.

Eric Wright needs to be released. The signing didn’t work out, plain and simple. Wright is an average corner at best getting paid big money, but thankfully the suspension will allow Dominik to cut ties and hopefully replace Wright with a better corner. I’d personally like to see the Bucs sign Sean Smith, always liked him; long, tall and young, I think he would be a nice fit. Grab the other corner in rounds 1 or 2 and I think we would already be greatly improved.

  8. Ramdog Says:

I am pretty sure that there are going to be alot of changes in the offseason. I would guess Qunicy Black and Eric Wright would be first to go freeing up roughly $13 million I believe in Salary Cap money. Trueblood is gone too. I wouldn’t be shocked if the whole Defensive Coaching staff isn’t fired. We need a defensive staff who can outsmart and out maneuver the opponent Dom Capers or someone like him comes to mind.

We will probably sign Bennett, maybe add a corner in Free Agency and then draft a couple more in the first few rounds. Probably get a Offensive Tackle and maybe a good big Tight End who can block. Finally a slot receiver would be nice.

We have some good young players on this roster and some solid Veterans as well. Dominik did a good job getting Barron, David, and Martin all 3 are going to be studs in the future.

  9. Have A Nice Day Says:

Can’t turn a team around in one year.

  10. JonBuc Says:

I think this team was turned around….losing to Atlanta hurt and the Philly gag was the dagger as Mean Gene might say. Had Talib and Wright just been average and off speed I think things are a bit different.

  11. Miguel El Magnifico Says:

Eric Wright was suspended and was not allowed to have any connection to the Buccaneers for 4 games or weeks. He makes roughly $8 million a year.

Most people suspended without pay would be forced to cut back and suffer. Eric and his wife are not constrained by those financial considerations, therefore his suspension involves 5 star hotels, restaurants and ritzy spas.

His Twitter account has nothing to do with the Bucs.

    The 1st amendment includes Tweets.

Throw big money at Danny amendola

  14. BucFan20 Says:

Pickings will be slim for corners in FA. Most of the ones on the market will resign with the team they are with. Others have age or some physical questions . I don’t think we just pluck one out of the sky in FA.

  15. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

Couldn’t agree more on Eric Wright. I think he has every right to do what he wants as he is suspended but don’t let everybody know your hitting a spa the day before your teammates have to go to battle.

Wright has been wildly unspectacular but not terrible. If he re-does his contract I would not mind seeing him back next year.

  16. Gus Says:

I also agree what he does in his time is his business but I will explain why everyone is upset with his tweet. He has been average on the field while getting paid big money plus the adderal incident. I’m ok with him returning but I don’t want him as our number 2 much less number one. A restructure of his contract and no more off the field incidents and fans won’t have a problem with him taking spa days

try telling that to the Indianapolis Colts or the Washington Redskins.

Get a grip and come to the 21st century will you?

  18. Eric Says:

And don’t tell it to coach smith and the falcons.

    Or harbaugh and the 49ers.

  19. pick6 Says:

the bucs owe eric wright no courtesy at all. they should take full advantage of the deal dropping all guarantees, and cut him once they are certain they have the depth they want
