The Pick That Almost Was

December 9th, 2012

Bucs corner Danny Gorrer falls to his knees after the Eagles beat the Bucs on the last play of the game.

The Eagles were marching and, sadly, Bucs fans had seen this too many times on the very same piece of real estate — at the very same end of the field earlier this season.

Philadelphia was moving the ball on a must-convert drive in order to win in the final seconds. As any Bucs fan should have expected, the Bucs’ secondary was struggling.

Then, rookie third-round pick quarterback Nick Foles threw down the middle on third down trying to hit Marvin McNutt. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, Bucs cornerback Danny Gorrer jumped in front of the pass and had the ball in his gut, but couldn’t hang on.

If he did, game over, Bucs win and the playoffs are still alive.

Instead, three plays later, the Eagles win on a touchdown pass on the game’s final play and the Bucs, again, will be watching the playoffs on TV just like the rest of us.

Gorrer was a destroyed soul after the game, all but placing the loss on his shoulders.

“What I saw, I got excited and as I said earlier, the great corners in this game make those plays and get the team off the field,” Gorrer said. “If I want to be a leader, and be great, I have to make that play.”

I thought that was Freemans fault ?

  2. Patrick Says:

“Danny Glover” wouldn’t even be playing if our cornerbacks weren’t taking Addarall. But even with Talib and Wright we would still suck.

Too late..you’re DONE!!!!!! Just slightly open your hands and the ball gently falls into them…you don’t belong in the NFL

I have seen this movie too many times. Saints games, Falcons games, 2005 playoff game wth Skins, now this. Get some talent, and enough of these has beens and never will be’s.

  6. ClayBURN94 Says:

Alot of the blame should go to Dummynick for his lack of ability to supply us with quality corners. Throughout his tenure, who has he brought in that was good at CB? Schiano/Sheridan can only do so much with a bunch of undrafted and 7th round corners. Smh. Fire Dominick!!!

  7. buccanay Says:

Of course, he should have made the play, BUT should have NEVER been in that situation. Its obvious, Shiano, either has ZERO confidence in Freeman, or doesnt get that, in this league, with this defense, no matter the opposing QB, you CANT win playing not to lose. I hope Shiano learned something today, but not holding breath, not the first blunder he’s made late in games. I already have very little faith in Freeman, and am losing it in Shiano.

You had your chance, now get off the field.

  9. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I’m not going to pile on a guy that just joined the team a week ago as a result of stupidity and selfishness by the real corners on this team. He should never see the field, but we have no choice. Anyone think Myron Lewis would have made that pick?

  10. Patrick Says:

Clean house with the cornerbacks this offseason, keep Barber…….cut everyone else. My division III college team has better cornerbacks than Lewis or Eric Wright.

  11. 507 Bucs fan Says:

It’s not his fault. Clearly he shouldn’t be playing, but due to suspensions of two players i won’t mention, he was. Tough loss, no playoffs this year but still better season than most expected.

  12. Pruritis Ani Says:

Yeah.. You can’t really put it on this guy. Sure he should have made the pick but it should never have come down to that one play. Actually the game changer or momentum changer was the muffed punt. Finally at that point things started clicking for the team. For whatever reason, they let this one get away. As much as they preach discipline, how is it they can be penalized for so many stupid infractions. 12 men on the field, holding, pass interference, personal fouls. This isn’t week 1 or week 2…..These are most always game killers as they were today.

  13. Fear The Glow Says:

Literally seconds before he dropped that pick I was telling someone that this guy wouldn’t even make it onto the roster of any other team in the league.

    Then boink…right off the numbers.

    Go back to bagging groceries

Why isn’t anyone talking about how bad barron is?? Dude sucks and can’t cover anyone

  16. SeanyMac in SC Says:

Yes, Barron was MIA, but so was the rest of the secondary. This loss hurt. Just when I was getting my hopes a little, SMASHED INTO PIECES. Oh well, life as a Bucs fan I guess.

  17. Reality Check Says:

@ Pruritis – The 12 men on the field was baffling to me too especially when they are 100% going to spike the ball to stop the clock. Why on earth were we substituting players? Do we have a prevent spike defensive unit?

“If I want to be a leader, and be great, I have to make that play.” I’d settle for halfway decent at this point.
