What’s Wrong At The Goal Line?

November 25th, 2012

Again today the Bucs paid a bitter price for not being able to punch in a touchdown from first-and-goal about three yards from the end zone.

New Orleans flashback anyone?

After a gadget play that saw Mike Williams complete a pass to Vincent Jackson, the Bucs were poised take a 14-10 lead with a touchdown from that great first-and-goal opportunity.

On first down Doug Martin banged out a couple of yards. But then Josh Freeman threw incomplete on second down, (Where was the QB sneak?), followed by a pitch left to Doug Martin that was snuffed out for a 1 1/2-yard loss. Connor Barth then tied the game at 10.

The Bucs have been a statistically strong red zone team all season, but there are issues when they need inches, and Mike Sullivan doesn’t seem willing to pound the QB sneak.

Joe’s not sure what the fix is. But this might rank high on the offseason to-do list.

  8. lurker Says:

i said we were leaving a lot of points off the board

  9. Architek Says:

Lots of room to grow. Especially on defense and play calling on both sides.

  10. canadianbuc Says:

Why dont we ever do that play to Vjax for the 2 point conversion last week? That play looked good

  11. Macabee Says:

You think that the ole roll out to Donald Penn as an eligible receiver is laying around somewere! Worked in San Fran! Without the starter O-Line, we need to be creative!

  12. Zach Says:

This is where the Bucs really miss Davin and Nicks.

  13. mikeynlam Says:

maybe vikes will be willing to part with toby gerhart in off season

  14. kncuknbuc Says:

we don’t get phantom pass interference calls at the goal line like everyone else does.

  15. buccanay Says:

Maybe we can layoff the Sullivan is the second coming of Vince Lombardi, for a week anyway.

The BUCS were a Tiquan Underwood drop or a bad holding call on Black away from winning this one. Also Freeman missed a wide open Mike Williams which I am sure he is still kicking himself for. The play calling wasn’t bad just our O-line as a weakness was exposed Freeman didn’t have as much time to throw. As far as our D I think the Blitz is what is making a run defense look better than perhaps it really is. When we Blitz we stop the run great but our secondary gets roasted if we don’t Blitz they run on us but they don’t get big plays. Pick your poison. Also it seems like Barron hit his rookie wall a few games ago and hasn’t been playing up to snuff lately saw him slow to coverage and miss at least 2 tackles. Offseason we need to get some CORNERs please and some more defensive lineman. We have a good GM and I think a good plan as far as what personnel can accomplish it. This is a rebuilding year and I have to credit the BUCS with doing a good job making it so we are in every game and winning the games we should. A few more years and we should be able to go deep into the playoffs. I think already the BUCS have surpassed everyone’s expectations. If I told you at the beginning of the year the BUCS will be in the Hunt for the playoffs you would’ve called me nuts.

    GO BUCS !!!!

V-jax has to get into that end zone, not his fault (well maybe) but it surely would help.

  18. Andrew Says:

you are right on the money with this one joe.

  19. 507 Bucs fan Says:

That pitch left was a sure td IF Trueblood makes an attempt blocking a 14yr old LB… what a joke that guy

Also @Buc Fan #238 what kind of a so called buc fan calls Mike Alstott MARK Alstott? You must be f******* joking

Run the ball “north & south” on the goal line. Throwing the ball puts us in a hole.

  21. JMoney Says:

The penalties killed us in this game also it was noticeable that the O line wasn’t as strong as it has been past few weeks. Overall not a terrible lost but come next year Tampa will be a team going strong like Houston.

  22. BucFan20 Says:

We have a QB how tall? We need 36 inches. Let’s put the RB where and try a running start ? How many years has this same thing been a problem now. 3 points when we should get 7 comes back to bite us in the azz. I did not see a really bad Defense today. Yes they had some mistakes. I think LJ was there on the bomb but missed the tackle but the defense still did not let Matty Ice score 30 or 40 points on them. The offense didn’t get the job done from the 1 yard line again. Only this time you can’t beat up LGB. They would rather come away with nothing or 3 than even try with him or a QB keeper.

  23. Vico Says:

We need Blount on the Goal line, other teams are not afraid of him anymore, I think that opens up a lot of potential opportunities. Like maybe play action Clark or freeing Underwood. Is not like Blount’s career is over or something, he is still a big guy that can run different plays than Martin’s best. I mean, Pitch left? Cmon
