Bucs Get Younger At Corner, Cut McDonald

November 6th, 2012

Your 2012 opening day nickel cornerback, veteran Brandon McDonald, who did some good things with the Bucs and drew love from Greg Schiano a few weeks ago, is now a former Buccaneer.

This is how Schiano described McDonald only a few weeks ago: “I’m impressed,” Schiano said. “His work ethic, his attention to detail. This guy’s a pro.”

Well, now McDonald will have to be a “pro” somewhere else.

The Bucs have promoted second-year cornerback LeQuan Lewis from the practice squad. Lewis has played in four games as a reserve over the past two seasons since joining the Titans as an undrafted rookie in 2011.

He has one career tackle.

This move sure is curious given the thin Bucs secondary and possible looming suspension of Eric Wright. Hopefully, the Bucs see something special in Lewis. Remeber, that’s LeQuan Lewis, not Myron Lewis.

Schiano doesn’t even wait for the offseason to make roster adjustments. He does them all year round. I dig it. I imagine next year’s draft will be just as fruitful given Schiano’s commitment to finding the best players possible.

  2. Orlandobucfan Says:

Maybe they promoted him getting ready to cut Myron Lewis and they wouldn’t have to pay to replace the name on the uniform. Just promote someone else later. We can only hope.

  3. Buc Fan #238 Says:

McDonald will go to the practice squad.

Look, it’s obvious they saw some BAD game tape of McDonald the past few weeks.

By cutting him, other teams will have to change their gameplan from “targeting McDonald” to something else.

And THIS is why you don’t let the blogosphere dictate who is doing well and who isn’t. Because a ton of you guys were ready to sign McDonald to a 50 million dollar contract before the season was over.

  4. CanadianBucsFan Says:

Overall, I really do like Dominik, but he needs to admit that Myron Lewis was a huge mistake and is now a waste of a roster spot. Im dissapointed that McDonald gets cut and Lewis doesn’t.. how many more pathetic games can Lewis have before he gets cut? Im hoping Gaitor makes a quick and full recovery and they send our joke of a 3rd round CB to go look for work elsewhere.. ( which he probaly wont find at all )

  5. TJ Says:

I know we are 4-4 but we are making some strange moves . Myron lewis is not better than mcdonald

  6. bucfanjeff Says:

I never liked Macdonald and never thought he was that good, but he is better than Lewis.

  7. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

I have learned to trust Coach Schiano’s judgement. Schianoball has brought an excitement to Tampa that I really like.
I have little doubt that we will win a Super Bowl one day with Coach Schiano.

  8. SteveK Says:

Well, I hope we get rid of Myron Lewis for Stanford Routt.

  9. J-villeBucs Says:

    Why not Lewis?

  10. kh Says:

please stop the Stanford Routt crap, he was cut from (by far) the worst team in football after money was already sunk into him. He has no future, period, end of story. Much prefer to go with some young kid on a practice squad then Routt.

  11. Gus Says:

Routt is an upgrade over Lewis and Mcdonald. I don’t look at who he played for. I’m looking at talent. If the guy has talent give him a shot.

  12. wideout1882 Says:

    THIS IS ABSURD

  13. FloridaGirl Says:

    Give them more adderoll!

  14. CaliBucFan Says:

Maybe McDonald’s injury was going to keep him off the field longer than expected? Have a hard time believing Lewis has outplayed him.

  15. Meh Says:

How can we cut a corner, and that corner NOT be Myron Lewis???

  16. Mike J Says:

Nice Day ,I was thinking about that today, ”Schiano’s commitment to finding the best players possible.”But it’s not just talent; attitude, character and work-ethic count for a lot with the new regime. Thus far, it’s paying off.

  17. Sneedy16 Says:

Everyone assume it’s Dominik who doesn’t want to cut Lewis, but have they not realize that Schiano is running this team. He makes decisions that was seemed crazy in the beginning, but make sense now. Maybe Schiano sees something that we are not seeing. He would of cut him by now. Brian Price was a higher pick and he is currently unemployed.

  18. Have A Nice Day Says:

There are only 13 CBs graded lower than Standford Routt according to PFF…. funny enough, just two spots below Routt is Brandon McDonald lol

  19. kh Says:

So if Stanford Routt is so talented then why did the worst team in football just cut him? Answer, he’s not talented and has gotten by on his speed/athleticism. Take one look at Leonard Johnson and tell me how important 40 yd dash times are.

  20. Buc O Deer Says:

I believe we will pick up two corners in the draft. Interesting cbssports mock draft with Manti and Barkley not in the top ten. They have us taking an OT. I see the Bucs trading down (maybe twice) and pick up the corner they really want. Gaitor could help a lot when he comes back. Tandy needs a chance.

  22. FlBoy84 Says:

There could be other factors involved besides just on-the-field play that comes into these decisions. Bad influence on the other guys off-the-field, source of some the party favors being spread around the DB room, etc? Gonna trust the staff when it comes to making personnel moves. Saw Ahmad Black got busted for weed a days ago as well. Snowbal effect.

  23. kh Says:

Good point FLBoy. As an alternate theory, I also heard EJ Biggers on his radio show last week comment that “B-Mac” was the class clown of the group and always was cracking jokes, in the locker room and in practice.

Maybe he told one joke too many or a joke at the wrong time and that was the straw that broke the camels back.

  24. Mike J Says:

Buc O Deer , I watch those mockers too.Not sure why they have an OT; some have a DT, which makes a tad more sense, but Roy is playing well. I think a corner, but value might trump need come Draft Day;long way away.

  25. SacBucs Says:

Dust up on me miguel..You & Hawii five O haven’t seem the last of me. Both you guys think your the smartest dudes on the planet.

  26. bob Says:

just getting rid of more drug guys id bet,, next up admad black.

  27. PRBucFan Says:

That’s a weak argument there are plenty or good players on bad teams. Let alone the fact that he was a 4-3 CB I’m a 3-4 system.

  28. blackmagic00 Says:

By the way I think Doug should be named wreckingball.

  29. Pete Dutcher Says:

    “Douglok”

Myron Lewis does not qualify for PS does he?

  30. ben Says:

stop with this just cut from the worst team in football crap. you could say alot of our own roster is full of guys from the worst team in football last year but the difference we have great coaches who can use the best of the talent they have.

  31. Keys Says:

Joe do you think they cut Ahmad Black ?

  32. SteveK Says:

I’d much rather take a chance on Routt, and send Lewis packing to Washington. Unfortunately, we might have to ship a 6th rounder to sweeten the pot, just so Washington will take him.

  33. SteveK Says:

    @ Keys,

Not if his piss is clean.

Doesn’t Ahmad know Adderol is where it’s at?

#Phucking Sh!t up, on and off the field. @Talib

@Joe, If GMC makes the pro bowl, can you do a piece on Thomas eating crow and let him back on? Win, win: you are the better man turning over ANOTHER leaf, and you let our most outrageous blogger back with the gang.

  34. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

    @Steve K
I also liked Thomas 2.2, and felt he added a lot (differing viewpoints) before he got carried away, and was shown the door.
If he can agree to behave himself, I too would like to see Thomas 2.2 back at JBF.
We sure do not want to allow JBF to be a known as a place of all Homers.
We need differing viewpoints, as long as the people offering them do it in a civil way.

  35. Have A Nice Day Says:

Thomas was given chances time and time again. He was even kicked once before but after a public outcry Joe allowed him back with special provisions. Even then 2.2 couldn’t get with the program.

Sometimes you have to put your foot down and show people the door regardless of their perceived value. Schiano did it with Price, Winslow and Talib, and Joe did it with 2.2.

It is a great day to be a Buc’s fan and a JoeBucsFan.

  36. Joe Says:

    Keys:

Joe do you think they cut Ahmad Black ?

    No.

  37. Joe Says:

    SteveK:

“Have a Nice Day” summed it up. Thomas — who Joe enjoyed having around — got booted twice for misbehaving; the second time so many people asked for his return Joe conceded.

Then Thomas stepped over a line that there is no return. Joe misses him, but it was Thomas’ decision in the end.

  38. J 2.0 Says:

Sorry Joe, I’m not much of a computer whiz. I thought there would be replays of the past weeks games online. Didn’t mean to say something out of line.

  39. SteveK Says:

Three strikes and your out. Thanks, Joe.

I am just so damn happy to see the real McCoy.

  40. SacBucs Says:

I will step out first and say johnson island. I will eat crow later on that matter. I think Mylew would make a better safety. The hit he put on the rookie runningback in training camp was ala mark barron’s hit on RG3. Coach my have seen what i seen! A hitter! He still cant cover a bed with a blanket. The fb for the raiders reece he’s a freak (not making excuses for Mylew) but he smoked Quicy Black 3 times on that drive. Watson does a better job period. Go back and watch last years game in SF before we got mushed. Watson was glued to Vernon Davis step for step. Dont he got 4.3 speed? Free Dekota Watson

  41. Joe Says:

    J 2.0:

    No problem.

There are replays on NFL.com’s GameRewind and if the Bucs are blacked out locally Sunday, that game replay is available for two or three days for free on NFL.com.

Joe will post a link Sunday night for the replay (it is free beginning at midnight Sunday), again, if the game is blacked out. If the game is not blacked out, you will have to use Game Rewind’s subscription, which is really a helluva deal.

This may shock people, but the NFL employs eyes to monitor various sites for illegal stuff and while posting a link isn’t illegal, it ruffles the feathers of certain high-powered suits that Joe isn’t of the mind to hassle with.
