Miller Time Might Come In Offseason

October 25th, 2012

As the Bucs’ league-leading run defense (3.1 yards per carry) hits the national stage tonight against beastly Adrian Peterson and the run-first Vikings, more and more is Roy Miller getting front-line credit for the defensive turnaround.

Woody Cummings, Tampa Tribune beat writer, penned a feature today explaining the change in Miller’s positioning and responsibilities this season with reaction from players and  coaches.

Many Buccaneers defenders said the move of Miller sparked the improvement.

“That’s been the whole key to it,” defensive tackle Gerald McCoy said. “When Roy gets his hands on the center and basically chokes him out (of the play) it just allows everyone else to run through more freely and make plays.”

(Definitely click on through above to read the whole thing.) Miller has had extraordinary revival, from a guy who just couldn’t get much done and was repeatedly in the heart of the Bucs defense when it was getting gutted and gashed the past three seasons.

Miller’s contract is up after this season, and who could have guessed in July that Miller might be in line for a giant paycheck come February.

If he continues to produce and stay healthy, the Bucs will have to pay handsomely for No. 90 to return.

The thought of signing a guy who is only playing well during a contract year must have the RockStar paralyzed in fear (he can’t afford another mistake)

  2. SensibleBuc Says:

I was completely wrong about Miller coming into the season. I’ll eat my crow and like it.

  3. drbinshore Says:

And I was completely right about him and I will take credit for being so!

  4. Jbrooks8604 Says:

I wouldn’t get to out of hand with his contract. He’s played well so far is season and only against the run. He doesnt bring much to the pass rush. I don’t think we should pour too much of our cap into him.

  5. vic Says:

Would be awfully scary to hand that guy what he might command. He’s only 25.

  6. Tbuc Says:

The amateur GM, can’t afford to over pay for a player who’s plated well for only a part of his contract. Hope Roy finishes strong, but this team can’t afford many more mistakes by the front office.

Roy Miller is the Quincy Black of the D-line. Tons of hype in preseason followed by a no show regular season. Please show me ONE impact play he has made for the Bucs.

Now with that being said I really think his problem is mental. Coaches throw praise his way all the time (remember Millard last year), yet Miller never puts it together during a game. This is his last chance.

The defense lead by Softy McCoy, incompetent Roy Miller, without Bowers and lacking little depth was going to be the bane of the Bucs. Well things look quite different now and the comments have changed tone accordingly.

“What would concern me is, Does he get worn out?” Lynch said of McCoy. “Because you’re going to ask a lot of him because he’s the best you have. Just being perfectly honest, there’s not a whole lot next to him. So I think he’s going to be the guy getting doubled all the time.”

he is lucky that the “GM Rockstar” was selecting all the DT, otherwise Miller would have been cut for better talent.

How the F does this team put so much stock in Roy Miller. The guy is not a good football player.

I wonder if being impressed with Roy Miller’s weight room presence has anything to do with this?

Buc fans should know by now that Roy Miller is an impressive workout warrior but when regular season rolls around, he’s a proven dud.

If Okoye is ready to play, that means the Bucs won’t have to rely on Miller’s play reaching a level never before seen in a Bucs uniform. Miller may pull it off, but Joe wouldn’t want to have to bet on it.

I dont have access to any coaches tape nor have I watched a practice this year. So I guess it really isnt fair to say, but I have never been impressed with Miller. Too often in the past it seemed opposing offenses had a gameplan to run at #90.

Apparently his injuries have healed and he is certainly getting praise from our HC. Its a make or break year for him. I don’t want to be sitting here a year from now reading about how Miller looks great and during the regular season he is a no show. We’ve heard that for the past two preseasons.

Roy Miller got a QB pressure and a pass deflection on Friday, I thought that was weak, coach thought that was great. Low expectations are now normal.

I dont recall anyone claiming Miller is the “stud of the D-line”.

My prediction: Our rush defense is going to suck again this year, because Price is gone, and all we have left is a talented, but unreliable McCoy. And Miller flat out sucks. Okoye……he’s ok. But after those two we have no one. At least we have Clayborn.

    Chris Freaking Hovan!

    That guy over Miller, too.

  10. knucknbuc Says:

Lol alright @millertime90. I’ll admit that I was wrong about miller heading into this season now it’s about staying consistent. Im happy to eat crow and admit I was wrong about a player. I was wrong about miller and glad I was. He’s gotta earn that contract tho and also earn it after that. kudos bro.

  11. Millertime90's Says:

You are a cool guy knucknbuc…stay in touch a best regards Go Bucs

    Where are this people?……

@BucFanOcala1 based on your comments do you even know the game of football

Simple question guys, Will he start this sunday????

Lets be reall here Roy Miller is a fuking turd and haynesworth is definatlly better….

@Teacherman777….hmmm do you know football or are you just an angry fan. got any words you may want to eat?….

After Gerald went down, everything went down.

I hope Brian can get healthy this offseason and I hope Albert can get back into real football shape and accept a cheaper contract.

But we still need to add another NFL caliber DT or 2 and forget Okam and Miller.

I like Michael Bennet and Tim Crowder and George Johnson as our backup DE’s.

But we really need depth at DT.

  13. Millertime90's Says:

DT Roy Miller: Been stout in the middle of the league’s best rush defense (in terms of yards per carry); his 88 career tackles are the most among defensive tackles drafted in 2009, which includes B.J. Raji, Peria Jerry, Ziggy Hood, Sen’Derrick Marks, Terrance Knighton, etc.

@appleroofcleaningtampa…it’s obvious you have fallen off of one too many roofs… I guess a gutter cleaner guess being a gutter cleaner makes you an expert on player performance and Draft Pick Potential. I cleaned Roy Miller’s gutters and you lost business.

  14. Millertime90's Says:

    @echase- you dont know football….

    McCoy aka McSoft
    Price always hurt
Miller should be on an arena bowl team
Bowers I think I like, but getting the injury prone lable.
    Claiborne I like

The Buc’s need a GM that knows how to draft

And according to “Ra” stats are for losers so lets look at Dom’s draft:
    McCoy (McSoft) Bust
    Price (Hurt)
    Miller (below average at best)
    Dre Moore (really?)
    Freeman (look at stat’s)
    Benn (look at stat’s)
    Williams (see Clayton)
    Brent Bowden
Bower ( like, but is hurt again)
    Clayborn (hopefully is our guy)
Foster (our middel sucked last year)

I have hope in Schiano but you can only play the cards you have. and our hand is still weak
