“We Fight Until They Tell Us Game Over”

September 16th, 2012

Tom Coughlin is no longer a Greg Schiano fan

Tom Coughlin had nothing but kind words for the New Schiano Order last week, but now he’s got a problem with it.

After Josh Freeman’s last second interception, the Giants needed a kneel-down play to close out the game. But the New Schiano Order plays through to the final whistle and plays hard on kneel-downs, which got the old man head coach in Schiano’s face after the final whislte.

The heated exchange was on the minds of reporters after the 41-34 loss. Schiano defended the Bucs actions. It’s the Schiano way, the Rutgers way,

“We fight until they tell us the game is over,” Schiano said. “There’s nothing dirty about it. There’s nothing illegal about it.

“We’re not going to quit. That’s just the way I coach and teach our players. Some people are upset about it. I guess that’s just the way it goes. I don’t have any hesitation that that’s the way we play, clean, hard football until the game is over.”

Screw Coughlin. That’s Joe’s reaction.

It’s the New Schiano Order, deal with it, especially on the field where Joe Pisarcik made history.

    to hell with Coughlin !

  2. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I get why Cougjlin is upset, but I like it. We don’t quit, period. Maybe the OL should block better and not allow it to happen????

  3. Colorado Buc Says:

Piss off old man be happy you lucked out and got the “W”! You geriatric, go take gus witherspoons spot in the diabetes commercials!!

Hard fought game, learn from it, and come out angry next week. Romo needs a new hole in his arse, go on and tear it for him!!

  4. Matt M Says:

If you going to play until the they say the game is over then you should stop the Giants from scoring instead of letting them fall on the one yeard line and walk into the endzone on the next play.

  5. NJBucsFan Says:

Coughlin is respected but not liked…by anyone. With that said he’s wrong. Coach S has to maintain the direction he’s in. Get rid of the quit attitude that plagued this team last yr. I love it!

  6. FLBoyInDallas Says:

I like the toughness but let’s not be hypocrites. If the Panthers last week would’ve crashed our line and knocked Freeman backwards on those three kneel downs to end the game you guys would be raising holy hell and calling them sore losers or classless or both. If you don’t want it done to you, don’t dish it out. Now other teams have every excuse to do the same thing to us at the end of games. Let’s see how Bucs fans like that when it happens. I don’t want to hear any bitching when it does.

  7. Eric Says:

100% behind Greg on this. I loved the way they fought back and tied it with that pass to Williams. Heck they dang near did it again but for the review.

Never give up, it’s a great thing IMO. If u don’t want the QB touched block!

  8. Colorado Buc Says:

The Bucs are the new 1990’s Hurricanes, get on the bus or walk on!!

  9. Colorado Buc Says:

By the way someone needs to deliver Greg Schiano a gift basket of Old Spice Swagger!

  10. 1976Buc Says:

With one score tying this up I don’t have a problem with this. A fumble and TD pass………

  11. Eric Says:

    Nicks 199 yards receiving
    Cruz 179 yards!

    Damn! That’s almost unheard of.

  12. blackmagic00 Says:

I loooooooved it. it was the exclamation mark on who we are

  13. Eric Says:

Dungy just agreed with Coughlin on it.

  14. Garry Says:

    @FLBoyInDallas

You might of noticed(im not sure why i did) Free didnt just kneel down, kind stepped back then went down. As in Coach has them practice for someone to do it.

  15. snook Says:

I love our Mike Shula 2nd half offense. It’s spectacular.

  16. RCH Says:

Now he knows!! What an idiot

  17. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Agreed, when we had a lead we had the Mike Shula offense, only opening it up after we fell behind. Not smart. Play to win. Always.

  18. Garry Says:

Im talking about last weeks game

  19. FLBoyInDallas Says:

    @Garry

Now that you say that I remember seeing it. But I bet from here on out we see the Bucs respect the opposing team’s kneel downs. Just a hunch.

  20. Jbrooks Says:

Learning experience for the Schiano coaching staff for sure. Bad play calling. Improve and move on. Do not make it a trend. The old school style as people call it is fine but you have to be able to adjust. Offensively when you are ahead, get more ahead. And defensive play calling wise, all I can say is don’t be completely stupid next time.

  21. Hawaiian Buc Says:

After seeing it from a different angle on NBC, I’m changing my tune. I don’t think it was the right thing to do. If it happened to us, I would be furious (and I suspect most of you would too). The problem is, a couple of our players got punched in the head as a result. The lineman from the Giants punched GMC right in the back of the head while he was lying on the ground. It’s not worth getting someone hurt (maybe in a future game) over trying to prove a point that we don’t quit. There’s other ways to do it.

  22. Jbrooks Says:

Agreed Hawaiian. It seemed to me that the coaches lost their heads and piled on another bad call there. They are new and will hopefully learn. Quickly.

  23. Fritz50 Says:

“If the Panthers last week would’ve crashed our line and knocked Freeman backwards on those three kneel downs to end the game you guys would be raising holy hell and calling them sore losers or classless or both”

Yeah, prolly would, I’ll give you that point

  24. chargedcbh Says:

I agree with coach, if Eli would’ve fumbled everybody would say what a great play. The NFL Network would’ve called it a great move! Deion is a punk! The ONLY problem I had with the coach today was leaving our CB’s on an island ALL day. When it was so obvious they couldn’t cover these guys alone. Too much blitzes….

  25. Eric Says:

    When Father talks I listen.

  26. Macabee Says:

Sorry! At the risk of getting major criticism for my opinion, I wish we hadn’t rushed on the kneel-down. After hearing Schiano’s presser and his explanation that that’s the way it is done at Rutgers, I think we draw unnecessary scrutiny and could become a distraction over the wonderful improvements we have made with this team. This should not be one of them.

In theory, he is right about playing until the final whistle, but there is an unwritten protocol in the NFL regarding this practice. Our time would be better spent getting wins where we get to kneel down. May be righteous intent, but the wrong battle to fight!

  27. Jbrooks Says:

A whole half full of bad calls ended with another bad call. Coaches lost their heads. That’s all it was.

  28. Hawaiian Buc Says:

There’s a difference between what is legal and what is ethical. This play was legal, but unethical. I just hope there’s no repercussions from this, as far as other teams taking cheap shots at us. Judging from GMC’s comments after the game, he wasn’t too happy with the play call either. Probably because he got punched in the head as a result of listening to the coach. If we get in that situation again, I hope they just let the other team take the knee, because I could foresee that becoming an internal problem if the players don’t want to do it. Hopefully it won’t happen again, so it won’t matter.

  29. Eric Says:

    What’s unethical about it?

  30. Hawaiian Buc Says:

You are diving at people’s knees. It’s one of those unwritten rules that you just don’t do in the NFL. It’s pretty much unanimous that every player, coach, or former player or coach agrees. I just don’t want to see another team take out the knees of one of our guys as a result. I’m glad we don’t play them again.

  31. Gt40bear Says:

Probably unneeded/semi-bush act but tell Tom to get some ice on that sore coochie of his. Screw him and all of NY!

  32. rrsrq Says:

It’s only a bad call if you are down by more than one score, we have all seen end of game battles… but what made it bad is the bad taste of the second half offense and no pass rush all day

  33. SilenceTheCritics Says:

If you are down by 7 points or less, which they were, I see absolutely no problem with what they did. All it takes is one turnover to get us right back in the game. You play until the clock hits O:OO. Schiano is absolutely right. Not our fault they thought we would just pack it in. They need to stop bitchin and act like men.

  34. Mitch Says:

BSPN, yahoo, and NFL network are all blowing the Bucs up for that supposed cheap shot. This is ridiculous.

  35. Buccanr1 Says:

Hawaii .. Stfu. I read this site regularly and quite frankly you are whine azz

  36. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Again, my biggest problem with it is a couple of our guys were getting punched in the head over doing what they were coached to do. I suspect if you were getting punched in the head over someone else’s decision, you probably wouldn’t be too happy. I initially loved the idea of playing until the game is over, but we all know the game was over (come on, we all knew it), and there’s just not much point in getting anyone hurt.

  37. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I’m sorry you think I’m a whine azz, even though I have absolutely no idea what that is. Wait a minute, never mind, I’m not sorry. I’m also not really scared of internet tough guys. Sorry to disappoint.

  38. lurker Says:

what knees? tell manning to take a step back and kneel if you are worried.

  39. Buccanr1 Says:

Nobody wants to hear about how many angles you took.. It’s football, ball is snapped and you tackle the carrier… Go clean your cats litter box

  40. Oahubuc Says:

Right on, Greg! We want football, not an expo on etiquette. And while you’re at it, could you put our monster runningback in when we have a big lead? Thanks.

  41. Hawaiian Buc Says:

The lineman’s knees. They showed a different angle on NBC (an aerial shot from behind the defense) that showed it. I agree the Giants were too lackadaisical back there, but from their perspective you have to understand their anger. If another team did it to us, we would be screaming foul. Once I saw that angle, I completely changed the way I felt, and I almost always see things through pewter glasses.

  42. SilenceTheCritics Says:

I think most people would bitch about it but me personally, i would never cry foul. I expect players to go hard until the final whistle. Again only a 7 point lead i would expect everybody from every team to play hard.

  43. Eric Says:

Given the giants had 31 first downs to our 14 and 600 total yards to our 300, it’s a miracle we were so close anyhow.

What happens if Eli fumbles the snap and our D-line half assed it at line of scrimmage? Isn’t it like running out a ground ball?

  44. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Yeah, but then we would probably still have to advance the fumble into the end zone, because there was only a few seconds left. I personally have never once seen it happen (fumbled snap in victory formation) at any level, much less the NFL. It would be interesting to know if it ever has happened.

I’m actually okay with it, as long as we don’t get people punching us in the head or taking out our knees in the future. I do love the idea of playing hard on every play, but I’m not sure it’s worth it in this case. I hope I’m wrong and being a complete idiot.

  45. gotbbucs Says:

Probably should have tried to get off the ball with that kind of tenacity on a few of Mannings 31 completions. I thought it was a pathetic ending to a pathetic half of football. We were three Eli Manning pass attempts away from getting absolutely destroyed by 20 or 30 points, and I put the majority of the blame on the offense.

  46. lurker Says:

i didn’t see the knees video, but here is an article on nbc about it with a comment from mccoy “we do what we’re coached.”

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/09/16/gerald-mccoy-we-do-what-were-coached/related/

  47. MTM Says:

Schiano = SWAG! Keep it up ! Bring on the Cowboys.

  48. Eric Says:

In 2001 Rivers was doing a kneel down at chiefs 20 yard line, to set up winning field goal.

    Fumbled it. Chiefs recovered.

Bucs might have got ball back with a second or two left deep in Giants territory. Never know. Missed snap count, whatever.

  49. Eric Says:

    Meant 2011.

  50. Bobby Says:

Look, maybe it’s time the kneel down thing got a wake up call. If there is time left on the clock why should the opposing team have to lay down just because you want to take the easy way out and kneel down. I’m not saying you can’t take a knee, just don’t expect it to go unopposed. Your line should still have to block and you should have to work to complete the play.

  51. Miguel Grande Says:

Maybe next time our opponent tosses a Hail Mary towards the end zone, instead of taking a knee? Aren’t they supposed to play until the end? Maybe, Romo and the Cowgirls will next week, to avenge their Giant divisional buddies.

  52. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I get what you guys are saying. I will concede. You never know.

  53. Oahubuc Says:

    Real torn on this one.

  54. lurker Says:

fake kneel-down, huh… everyone probably said the same thing with the spike until marino threw the fake-spike to score a touchdown.

  55. ShutTheBucUp Says:

Who really cares? Meaningless crap like this is forgotten in a week or so. Both teams played a hell of a game. If you want to get mad at someone, get mad at the DC. I could have called better plays from my couch in between beers.

  56. Bane Says:

    It was stupid
A player in the act of kneeling down or sliding and “giving himself up” can’t fumble. As soon as he is touched he is down. Learn the rules….and guess what schiano no one cares what u did at Rutgers and certainly no one watched….how about you try to force a fumble on those last two runs by the giants instead of letting him walk into the end zone untouched….that was playing real hard….Schiano just was pissed because his horrible defense gave up the most yards in buccaneer history…..how’s that compare to Raheem joe???

  57. Bane Says:

Almost 1000 yards of offense givin up in two games….and for all those Raheem, Greg Olson haters, look who made the big plays today, E Wright and V Jax….. Amazing what adding free agents can do for your team and not just signing a punter….idiots

  58. ShutTheBucUp Says:

Bane, why don’t you just follow your boy Raheem to the Redskins then? I dont think anyone will miss you. Adios

  59. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

Sean King did a fake kneel down as I recall…and it paid off. So long as fakes are allowed, going after kneels should be allowed.

The only dirty moves I saw on the Bucs side was Talib holding constantly and the one tackle out of bounds by Barron. Schiano really needs to get that under control because when the reg refs come, none of that will fly.

This was the first time I actually missed the old refs. There may as well have been NO REFS at this game.

  60. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

Bane…you clearly didn’t watch the other players. As I recall Williams made a touchdown as well. Others made plays. Go worship the redskins, cause you clearly are not a Bucs fan.

  61. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

Personally, I think both teams played a little dirty today. And both got away with it.

The Giants and their fans are just mad because the Bucs don’t back down any more. They give as good as they get.

So far as finishing, I know the coaches will fix the issues. Keeping so many DBs makes a lot more sense now, doesn’t it?

  62. ShutTheBucUp Says:

I agree. Its football. The reason we sit there until the last second is because anything can happen. Just because something becomes routine, doesn’t make it a sacred cow. Rush that goddamn kneel if it has the potential to win game for us. Glad we have a coach who knows the rules and has some balls.

  63. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Alright Pete, don’t start this crap again. Last week was not a late hit. Everyone and their mother knows it, except you still keep holding on to hope that you will have just one other person (outside of North Carolina) that agrees with you. IT WAS NOT A LATE HIT!!!!! It wasn’t late, dirty, fineable, or anything else you want it to be. The receiver was not defenseless. Learn the rules, check your glasses, and move on. In today’s game, he could have been flagged for dragging the man down out of bounds. If I was the ref (and unbiased), I probably would have flagged him for it. It wasn’t dirty though, and it wasn’t violent at all (which is probably why the ref didn’t flag him). It certainly wasn’t dirty. Most coaches will live with that on occasion, especially if they have the skill level of Mark Barron. What’s your deal with Barron anyway? The guy has played lights out for 2 weeks, yet you are nit-picking at him every week. He’s probably going to be Dominik’s first drafted Pro-Bowler.

  64. Oahubuc Says:

“We don’t do that in this league.”. We do now, old man. Game ain’t over. Play ball. Screw the pomp and circumstance.

  65. ShutTheBucUp Says:

    Well put Oahubuc!

  66. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I’m always amazed at how some fans are so partial towards some players, yet hate on others. Pete, why don’t you mention Mason Foster’s hit as dirty? Why do you single out (2 weeks in a row might I add) Barron’s harmless little drag down out of bounds, when Foster will most likely get a fine for his helmet to helmet hit. For the record, I have no problem with Foster’s hit. In fact, I kind of like it because people will think twice about coming over the middle with him lurking. But you obviously have a thing with Barron. I’m sure you will try to deny it, but anyone who frequents this board knows it. People who hate GMC (cough cough, Miguel) single out GMC for a poor game, when the entire line was invisible. Not one mention of Clayborne. Just wait until Quincy Black has a bad game, you guys are going to eat him alive. If I didn’t know any better, I would think you are writing their checks every week.

It’s fine to criticize players for playing poorly, but it’s funny how the same fans criticize the same players every single week, but never criticize “their guys”. Clayborne and McCoy are 2 of my favorites, but they both played awful today. I don’t like saying it, but it’s true. Talib was horrendous, and I thought he was at minimum a really good CB. He wasn’t even good enough to be a bad CB today. Doug Martin is my boy, but Blount should have played more, because Martin didn’t play great.

This is a long season. Nobody is going to have 16 great games, and hopefully nobody is going to have 16 bad games. If you find yourself criticizing the same players every game, chances are you are biased. If your guy never has a bad game, or even a bad play, chances are you are biased.

  67. adam from ny Says:

our rookie head coach made a lil’ mistake….but don’t expect him to back down from it…he is teaching attitude and is the leader…he can’t back down from this boo boo…… but he’s smart and won’t pull that sh*t again…it made the bucs look bad…coach made a rookie mistake and will most likely take it as a learning lesson and note to self, since his jump to pro ball from the college ranks….adam from ny

  68. Laughable Says:

The rest of league is laughing at Schiano’s 2nd Rate Rutgers BS attempt here. This is why you don’t hire a coach from a weak program like Rutgers. Minor league Harry High School stuff here.

  69. Tristan Berry Says:

Me, I’m beyond fed up with the wussification of football that’s been trending for a while now. I like Schiano’s “play to win until the final whistle” mentality, and anyone who doesn’t like it can find another team to root for as far as I’m concerned.

  70. Have A Nice Day Says:

I can’t believe this is even an issue. Nothing happened. Literally, nothing happened. AT ALL. There is nothing that even remotely suggests a “cheap shot”.

This is what happens when you play the news media in its own home. F’ing Christ.

  71. Pruritis Ani Says:

There is absolutely nothing unethical about this. It would be different had there been an intent to injure a player. Incidentally, this is not new. I’ve seen this happen over the years, where someone is constantly going for the ball even on the last play of the game. The game is still Football, which is a contact sport.

  72. sandbagrudy Says:

althought some want this to be ufc fighting it’s not you can’t tap out in the nfl

  73. Hawaiian Buc Says:

This is going to be my last post on this, because frankly I’m tired of defending anything that has to do with the NY Giants. They did dive at the knees of the Giants linemen. You can only tell if you see if from the aerial angle NBC showed. Remember how many of us (myself included) were upset when the Patriots lineman blocked straight into GMC’s knees? This is the same thing, but when the game was over (and we all know it was over). It’s a legal play, but just something that’s normally not done, and widely considered dirty. As fans, we don’t set the bar as to what is and what isn’t dirty.

I have yet to see ONE person (outside of fans on blog sites and Buc players) defend this. Think about it, not one. Doesn’t that tell you something? Like it or not, there are unwritten rules, and we just broke one. That being said, I don’t really give 2 sh!ts unless it ends up hurting us. I’m concerned about 2 things: First of all, I’m concerned another player is going to take a cheap shot at one of our players to get revenge. These players are like a fraternity, and if they see what they perceive as dirty play, they can try to get revenge. I don’t want to lose anyone for this. Second, I think it’s pretty obvious some of the players (GMC in particular, because he was getting his head punched) didn’t really like the play call. Why would they if that is the result? I’m not going to be in favor of anything that gets me punched. Perhaps that’s just me. What happens the next time Schiano makes this same call and the guys don’t want to do it? They have to decide between disobeying the coach, or having to do something clearly perceived as dirty. Players don’t want to be thought of as dirty. That’s a possibility of having some player-coach disconnect that would not be good.

We can all sit here and say this is wussification of the game, or screw the Giants, or we play to the end, etc., but overall perception of this reflects really bad on our team. We are getting blasted all over the place now, with virtually no supporters. And do any of you actually think this is going to help us? Who gives a crap if we play every play if we lost the game? Have any of you ever considered a defense that doesn’t dive at the knees of a kneeling-down QB a team of quitters? Of course not. All we did was lose the respect of many. As much as many of us wish it were, it’s not college football. Like it or not, pro players have a different mentality. If you think otherwise, you are delusional. All this does is cause an unnecessary distraction, which is the last thing we need.

I’m sure I’ll get blasted for this, but I’m a big boy, I can take it. I’ve supported Schiano and this team, but the more I think about it, the more I’m convinced he made a mistake. It’s not the end of the world, and I still think he is the perfect coach for this team, but he needs to learn from this.

  74. flmike Says:

Why should any team agree to give their opponent what amounts to a free play, f that, play till the last whistle.

  75. Paul Says:

He was trying to pad the stat sheet because of such a dismal performance from his D-Line.

It was pretty pathetic and I lost a lot of respect for this coaching staff.

  76. Buc Fan #237 Says:

This message board of whinners is unhealthy for normal people.

You cry babies are all sick in the head.

  77. raphael Says:

So the Giants blocked us for 52 pass attempts and can’t block us on a simple kneel down ??? Bullspit ! #New Shiano Order

  78. bucs911 Says:

Does this mean we will never ever take a knee to end a game with our offense on the field?

  79. JMOON87 Says:

This was done Vs the Bucs last year in the Falcons game ..no mention of it as Smith didnt act like a Baby about it ..it happens alot teams are chippy at the end of a hard fought game .

  80. Bucnjim Says:

You can really tell the fans who have played ANY kind of organized sports from the ones who haven’t. The coach is trying to instill physical & mental toughness into a team that desperately needs it. Even though the team struggled in the fourth quarter; you couldn’t help but be proud of the way they went up to NY and knocked the crap out of this team. It’s not going to happen over night! Great progress though and I for one am very proud of the team for giving it their all.

  81. BigMacAttack Says:

I think the Giants and their Media are making a mountain out of a molehill.

    Bucnjim, I agree with you.

The Bucs have a ways to go but have improved immensely.

  82. Panama city, Panama Loyal Bucs Fan! Says:

It was a stupid call by Schiano. You proved nothing with that play. How about playing hard and executed throughout the game and not allow 600 yards of offense.

  83. gus Says:

I didn’t see knee diving. They were going for the ball. What if they beat the snap theres a fumble and someone runs it back for a touchdown. We would all be looking at schiano as a genius. The possiblity of that happening is higher when the other team doesn’t expect it. I dont see schiano doing this for the rest of the season.

  84. mikeck Says:

Well, listening to Mike and Mike on ESPN…Anthony Peirce, Mike Golic, Ron Jawarski and Mike Ditka ALL agree with the Bucs on this, so I’m not sure where you guys get the “everybody is blowing up the bucs thing”

  85. big007hed Says:

Hey Hawaiian Buc here is your example of failed victory formation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQz4BFbgARI

So if that happened and the Bucs recovered would you still say it was bush leagued?

  86. Caleb Says:

If the Giants would of done this to us as we “go for a knee” everyone of you would of been up in arms upset about the play. God i hate unintelligent FANS…….it was cheap, no need for it, you fought hard and lost get em next week

  87. big007hed Says:

@Caleb how was it cheap? The Bucs defense did not hide the fact that they were going to rush the line, the Giants OLine played it lazy and if they got hurt or fumbled the ball its on them! Former players, former NFL coaches are agreeing with Schiano so who is the unintelligent one?

  88. Miguel Grande Says:

“Well, listening to Mike and Mike on ESPN…Anthony Peirce, Mike Golic, Ron Jawarski and Mike Ditka ALL agree with the Bucs on this”

“Former players, former NFL coaches are agreeing with Schiano so who is the unintelligent one?”

On the sports talk shows, the producers assign or sort out the participants as to what their opinions will be before the segment. That way it is more entertaining. You two say french toast is great, you two say pancakes.

Hawaiian nailed when he said the NFL is a fraternity.

  89. BigMacAttack Says:

I say get over it already. Hawks spanked the cowgirls and we have a shot. 1-1 ain’t bad. Moving on.
