LeGarrette Blount Is No Kellen Winslow

September 16th, 2012

Take a look at the film and you’ll see that the celebration of Mike Williams’ stunning 41-yard touchdown grab late in the fourth quarter has a surprise guest early in the end-zone celebration.

That would be LeGarrette Blount.

The best Joe could tell, Blount was not on the field for the play. In fact, Blount had no carries and appeared to only be in the game for one offensive snap.

But there was Blount fired up for his teammate. Joe brings this up because so many of Joe’s media brethren have implied that Blount has a poor attitude that is escalating now that he is a backup. Greg Schiano all but called that nonsense one day last week after the Carolina game, but the implication persists.

Joe hopes Blount’s actions on that touchdown quiet some of the negative chatter. Joe remembers well when Kellen Winslow pouted after a Preston Parker touchdown and got in Josh Freeman’s ear when he should have been celebrating in last year’s inspiring home victory against the Saints.

Blount is no Winslow, despite what some want to believe. As for why Mike Sullivan can’t yet find a role for Blount, that’s a topic for another day.

Wish we could have gotten him a couple carries today. Martin did okay, but I would have liked to have seen Blount get a couple opportunities.

  2. Kyle Says:

I swear defense are so damn happy we keep this guy on the bench.

  3. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

I would be happy if he got just 10 carries a game. Just that would give him a chance to make an impact.

Even Dunn didn’t do it alone.

  4. Alex Says:

I can’t see Blount on the highlights on nfl.com of this play, am I being thick?

  5. 1976Buc Says:

There is a problem. Whether it lies with Blount or the coaching staff. I will take Schiano at his word that Blount is healthy enough to practice and does not have an attitude problem. I look forward to some answers regarding coaching staff.

  6. bUcncRazy Says:

2 coaching staffs don’t trust him? Something is very strange about the situation

  7. Andrewbucsfan Says:

When we got the ball late in the fourth up 8 we should have ran Blount to start the possession. He is a good rb

  8. Chris Says:

Sullivan is an idiot and a pathetic coach… Dungy OC’s is what this one reminds me of.

  9. Buc Fan #237 Says:

    Blount has a neck injury.

What I don’t get is why the Bucs didnt find another bruising back to go with what we have. We don’t have an Alstott type bruiser that can punch it in at the goal line or bull thorugh for a first down on 3rd and short.

  10. admin Says:

    Joe here,

@Buc Fan #237 – If Blount was hurt he should have been deactivated for today and Michael Smith should have had a helmet on. Blount practiced this week and was listed as probable officially. He’s fine.

  11. 1976Buc Says:

@237, Blount practiced full pads this week after medical evaluation. I hope someone can find an answer. If he isn’t going to be part of this team you are correct. We need to find a RB. DJ Ware, as much as this staff likes him has been in the league long enough for us to know if we are counting on him to spell Martin we have a problem.

  12. Bucfever40 Says:

Just like we had a hard time dealing with Andre Brown because of his size, Blount offers the same type of problems for those trying to tackle him, so it was either the stinger he got, or they (coaching staff) just have lost all faith in him.

  13. lightningbuc Says:

We bitched and moaned about how greg olsen didn’t use blount properly, and it appears we have another O-coordinator who doesn’t know how. Giving Martin 20 carries, Ware 1, and Blount zero is inexcusable. If the Schiano and staff are going to pin the season entirely on Martin’s back, it will be a long year. Ridiculous!

  14. 1976Buc Says:

I really don’t want to go here but I think the witch hunters might have a case that Dom and Schiano are justifying their No.1 pick. I have said all year that I am not completely on board with The hamster yet. Again today he just played ok. I don’t think he has earned No.1 pick status…..yet. This is not a one back league any longer. If Blount is not being punished for attitude ( and I don’t believe he is from my observations) and he is healthy then I would really like to know why he is sitting the bench. The fact he was in for one play tells me he is healthy. In previous games and a couple of occasions today he was the first one up and congratulating teammates. Really scratching my head.

  15. Fritz50 Says:

Heard the early morning crew on 98.7 speculating on the situation, & all but saying that there’s some kind’a secret onspiracy afoot. Even they didn’t speculate as to what sort’a conspiracy. It’s like if coach doesn’t give them enough copy, they have to fill the void.

  16. Patrick Says:

Martin did just fine……but after a while the defense is gonna adjust to him. When that happens, you need to CHANGE UP the running backs! Blount is a power runner that tires out defenses when we have the lead. If Sullivan is this stubborn with Blount going forward, that’s not a good sign.

They better get their sh*t together this week! The Cowboys have destroyed the Bucs like what…….four straight times now going back to Thanksgiving 2006?? Living in Texas, I’m tired of always being embarrassed every time they play each other. Better f’kin WIN. Romo better not have another career day against us!!

  17. JonBuc Says:

Let Blount out of the doghouse already. I counted one play he was in on. Clyde Christiansen thinks the 2nd half play calling was conservative.

  18. Brad Says:

I for one think this offense gets wat too predictable and that’s way in 2 games our offense is forced to so many 3rd and longs. Freeman used to be known for his ability to spread the ball around but this staff seems to geared up to use only 2 players. Martin/Jackson… Granted they should be primary targets but it gets so obvious as the game goes on that other teams find it easy to defend. Why they can’t use Blount tons more or why we don’t throw more screens to running backs or slants to other receivers not named jackson is beyond me. We had this team on the ropes and even despite the two pics by Freeman the game was lost cause our offense becomes so predictable and we give it back to the other team. We need to have more of a killer instinct. We should be 2-0 and the talk of the NFL but instead where wondering what if.. We also need a pass rush and less blitzing especially if we’re still not getting to the QB.

  19. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Martin had nowhere to run the majority of the game, but I agree that putting in Blount would have at least gave the defense something to worry about. He may have done nothing, but at least give him a couple carries.

  20. rrsrq Says:

I thought the coaches watched some of the old film, did they not see Blount in the closer role throughout 2010 and he never gave up during the 2011 dilemma

  21. upthegut Says:

Hang in there LeGarrette, your turn will come! When it does there will be thousands of your fans cheering for you as you break off a big one.

Life in the NFL is tough for a red headed step child.

    Apparently

  24. Oahubuc Says:

I don’t know what the heck is going on here, but I was sure he was coming in in the second half. It’s incredibly weird. I can only hope they’re saving him for some stuff we haven’t seen yet. The conservative play calling, I think too, will open up as the season goes on. I don’t think we’ve seen everything this team has yet. Well, I hope. Got to believe they’re holding a few things close to the vest to really contend in our division games and other tough ones down the stretch. I’ll tell you what, I enjoy watching the Bucs just compete.

  25. gotbbucs Says:

It only looks like Martin has nowhere to run because he takes the ball and closes his eyes and barrels into the back of his line. He doesn’t have the patience or vision to see where the lanes are going to open up at. I’m sorry, and I’m not going to beat this to death like last week, but Martin is a 3rd down back. There were opportunities out there for big plays in the run game and Blount would have seen them and taken full advantage. Sadly we won’t get to see this until Martin wears down mid season or gets hurt. It is unbelievably frustrating to watch this offense being held back by such a stubborn old school mentality. How many 1st downs in a row did we run it right up the gut in that 2nd half?

  26. gotbbucs Says:

    @ Oahubuc
I don’t think The Meadowlands with the defending Super Bowl champs on the run would it make much sense to hold back anything in the playbook.

  27. Oahubuc Says:

@gotbbucs: Yeah, I know. I can dream, though.

  28. Oahubuc Says:

How about this part of the playbook, though. It must be in there: Give Blount ball, eat clock, very possible big play.

  29. BucFan20 Says:

For all the Blount haters. There’s your “Bell Cow”. He missed a pass too. Blame that on him or Freeman? No matter what you would blame it on Blount if it was him.

  30. teacherman777 Says:

    I miss Blount!

Hopefully, we were just giving him another week to rest his neck. We dont need this neck/head to aggravate him all year. We need him healthy for the final 8 games. Which as you know, are the most important.

And maybe the coaches are just playing some mind games with LeGarrette.

Trying to get him pumped up.
