McCoy “Looks Like Somebody That’s Thinking”

August 20th, 2012

No. 99, the QB Killa, is on the prowl pimping his new book, Sapp Attack. And Sapp landed on WDAE-AM 620 this morning to talk to the Ron and Ian Show but the conversation quickly turned to Gerald McCoy.

Sapp was asked for a scouting report on McCoy, and it wasn’t pretty.

“Looks like somebody that’s thinking,” Sapp said of McCoy. ” Looks like somebody that’s thinking through, you know, where they want to go. The biggest thing I told him this year. He’s gotta get that damn blocker off. He’s gotta shed him. You gotta shed him and go put your horns on people.”

Sapp went on to say “I don’t see his push-pull or his violence.”

You can listen to Sapp’s entire take below. As usual, he’s extraordinarily entertaining.

Sapp says he’s a fan of Michael Bennett and Adrian Clayborn. And he shares more about McCoy, who he says needs to “wake up.” Interestingly, he also says Brian Price didn’t like McCoy. Sapp also explains why Greg Schiano’s fitness test was a wonderful thing to toughen up the Bucs. Great stuff.

Hearing about Price not liking McCoy makes it more clear as to why he hit the door.

Between the injury, His personal life, Hitting Barron in the classroom (this years 1st round pick), and not liking McCoy. It is starting to become clear Price not having been as good for this team as people thought!

  2. SteveK Says:

Lol @ Sapp. Big # 99 is outrageous.

Wish GMC can develop to be half as good as QBKilla.

  3. Kyle Says:

That was one loud vote against Mr. Alleged Disruption

  4. bucfanjeff Says:

Has Sapp ever said anything REALLY good about a DT not named Warren Sapp? Just sayin’.

  5. FanOfBucs Says:

Sapp is the truth when it comes to this matter.

Leave your emotions at the door and listen to one of the best ever.

  6. Jrock Says:

bucfan, Warren has been high on McCoy ever since he was drafted. Even gave him some personal pointers, and hasn’t said anything negative about him until now. He’s telling it like it is, it’s time for McCoy to put up or shut up, that’s the end of it. He hasn’t produced for 3 years after being a 1st round pick, and this is his year to prove his worth.

  7. Rick Says:

Sapp is the greatest. Don’t understand why people always disliked him. Because he wouldn’t sign you or your kids autograph. What the hell is an autograph good for anyways?

I miss those days when no matter what the outcome of the game, there was not doubt that 99, 55, 47, and 20 left it all out on the field. And that made losing a game a little easier to digest.

We need more sapps in this game.

  8. Have A Nice Day Says:

McCoy will will be Sapp. He never had that pass rushing ability and not drafted to be that either regardless of how much the media and fans made it out to be that. He was drafted to help a run defense that was allowing more yards than ever before. When on the field he does his job.

Also, complaining about his paycheck is stupid. Why care how much someone else is making?

  9. Have A Nice Day Says:

    **McCoy will NEVER be Sapp.**

  10. Thomas 2.2 Says:

Truer words were never spoken. I know that many former Bucs (Beckles, Culpepper, King) have expressed similar opinions.

There is a ton more to the position than get-off.

I don’t blame Price for disliking the hype-that the org, media and fanatics have undeservedly bestowed on Gerald.

  11. Stevek Says:

Sapp has a point. You gotta want to be nasty, angry, and down right mean (within the rules).

I loved Sapp’s intensity, and I feel he is all out telling the truth.

GMC is a nice guy, but being nice doesn’t win football games.

    Less dissruptions, more sacks.

  12. Eric Says:

Not exactly a ringing endorsement of the great disrupter.

Are they planning anything for the ten year anniversary of our Super Bowl team? Be cool to have them all back before everyone forgets.

  13. Miguel Grande Says:

Love Warren Sapp. McCoy is a mere shadow of that man. You can’t live soft and fight hard!

Dini will be out of football next year and will never have to worry about dementia caused by concussions.

  14. lurker Says:

hey don’t forget that sapp’s other nut needs suckling too! great player, bad person.

also miguel pequeno, don’t forget this part of the article:
“Sapp also explains why Greg Schiano’s fitness test was a wonderful thing to toughen up the Bucs.”

sapp is great in his critique of mccoy but not of the fitness test? lol

  15. Thomas 2.2 Says:

Where are all the “everyone” who knows football says Gerald is awesome yahoos?

  16. Thomas 2.2 Says:

Wow! The audio is much more scathing than the aricle suggests. Sapp and Beckles honestly calling Gerald soft, thinking, needs to do something after get off, Price thought that he was better than Gerald, they like Clay and Bennett Better than Gerald.

Geez, I rate Gerald better than Sapp and Beckles do!

  17. george john Says:

I remember when they had the defensive linemen competitions in the offseason on ESPN and SAPP would always come in 1st in stregnth, agility…all categories. So reguardless of how he looked Sapp was in very good shape.

  18. ScottyinFatAntonio Says:

Looks like we picked up Jordan Shipley (wr, Bengals) off waivers

  19. Bobby Says:

Yeah…because Sapp and Beckles know so much. After all it was Sapp who predicted that Freeman would be the league MVP last year. He’s a regular Nostradamus……

  20. Thomas 2.2 Says:

OK Bobby you make a lot of sense:

So the Greatest UnderTackle to ever play can’t properly evaluate UnderTackle play because he was wrong on his prediction for 2011 for the QB Freeman. Sure.

Nobody knows 3 tech play better Sapp, including Steve White.

  21. Mr Lucky Says:

Yup it’s time GMC stopped thinking and started disrupting and being half the player that Suh is.

  22. JonBuc Says:

TomTom Tue Tue is the premier legal secretary in The Brandon area….therefore making him an expert in shorthand and latte delivery…yet probably not football.

  23. squadoosh Says:

Sapp is entertaining and I loved him as a player but the guy still is an egomaniac duchebag. I agree on Mccoy though….lots of talent but he needs to get nastier and I don’t know if he has it in him. Even without it if he stays healthy he is one of the best players on the defense.

  24. Mike J Says:

Let’s keep in mind that with the injuries, Gerald only has a little over a season’s worth of starts in the league. Plus, he is trying to learn a new defense. So maybe he IS thinking a bit much instead of just reacting.
Who would you replace him with, anyway?

  25. Eric Says:

What the heck would Sapp know?

It doesn’t match the feelie goodie conventional wisdom.

  26. st. louis Bucs fan Says:

nice interview but the one he had with The King of All Media Howard Stern was amazing!!! a different side of Sapp Daddy ive never seen.. he may be right about GMC but i hope he is 1/2 as good as #99. BUC IT IM OUT!!!!!!!!

  27. Bobby Says:

I just want to know what he basing his evaluation on. McCoy hasn’t played enough to know what he can do. Suh ha sbeen no better than McCoy pre-season. 1 tackle. So, I guess Suh is thinking too much? How else do you explain his lack of production? I mean, Suh really took a step down last year with 4 sacks, and only 1 tackle so far this preseason. Do you think they need to be concerned?? I’ll bet Lions fans are freaking out!!!! I know……WWSS?? (What Would Sapp Say). That was your bed time story for the night. Good night little Tommy.

  28. JonBuc Says:

Bucs awful season (2009)= Geraldine at old high $ signing bonuses
Panthers awful season(2010)=Cam Newton under the new rookie wage scale.

    OUCH!

  29. SteveK Says:

    Bobby,

    Suh is superior to GMC.

Suh’s stats last year are very similar to GMC’s for his career.

  30. j lynch Says:

Mc Coy may be Sapp someday… Broke dick baby daddy wife beating hooker abusing washed up loud mouth no class punk…. more????

  31. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I’m not going to discredit the opinion of one of the greatest Bucs of all time. It’s his opinion, and he obviously knows much more about the position than I ever will. I have to admit, this definitely is quite a blow to those like me who believe he will be a great player. I will say, however, that just because Sapp was a phenomenal player at his position does not automatically make him a great talent evaluator. Hell, Michael Jordan was the best basketball player of all time but can’t evaluate talent to save his life. I still think it is way too early to make any sort of judgement on GMC yet. There simply isn’t enough film on him yet. I’d love to see him have a full year and then we can re-evaluate him this time next year.

  32. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“Don’t understand why people always disliked him. Because he wouldn’t sign you or your kids autograph. What the hell is an autograph good for anyways? ”

    ——–

Not that it has any relevance to this story, but there are many other reasons why Sapp is disliked by so many people. First of all, he has had some issues off the field. People who abuse women typically do not endear themselves with fans. Second, there are numerous stories about how horrible he was to the media. Overall, he was just a jerk (I say “was” because I don’t know how he is now). I used to play basketball with him at the YMCA. At first, it was so cool to play against him. However, that went away after about 2 trips down the floor. When he wasn’t trying to start fights, he would argue every single call. Obviously he would always win because nobody would or could challenge him. After a while, I would hope he wouldn’t be there, as he literally sucked all the fun out of playing basketball.

“After a while, I would hope he wouldn’t be there, as he literally sucked all the fun out of …”

sounds like thomas and a few others here too!

  34. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @lurker,

    Yes it does!

  35. Bobby Says:

@SteveK…… You do realize that you just proved my point. GMC has never played a full season and yet his stats match Suh’ s for a complete season. Let McCoy play an entire year and then we will know how good or how bad he is. I am confident that if he stays healthy he’ll be very good.

  36. Stevek Says:

    @ Bobby,

    I hope you are right…

    Suh 2011: 14 games played, 36 total tackles- 26 solo, 4 sacks

GMC for career: 19 games played, 39 total tackles-32 solo, 4 sacks

Looks like Suh on an “off” year still will replicate or outperform GMC.

    Also:

Tampa Bay Bucs w/ GMC: 14-18, no playoffs

Detroit Lions with Suh: 16-16, 2011 Wild Card playoff berth.

  37. Bobby Says:

Yes, and the Lions weakness was their defense.

  38. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

I respect Sapp a lot…but clearly he only watched a couple plays of McCoy in the two games. Most of the time McCoy was hitting the QB just a fraction too late. He’s fast and disruptive most of the time.

It’s just a matter of time until the rest of the line catches up to he and Clayborn…and then watch what happens.

  39. teacherman777 Says:

How does Sapp not know the name of Clayborne and Bennet?

I thought he works for NFL network?

Does anybody remember why Sapp left the Bucs anyway?

  40. Sapp is an a$$hole Says:

I didnt catch the brian price disliking mccoy thing, even listening twice. Maybe what sapp says is correct, mccoy needs an edge before he can fulfill his potential. Yet i really can’t blame mccoy if he decided to follow advice from people other than sapp, who everybody knows, as a great a player as he was, has a whole host of personal probs that i wouldn’t trade for even if it did come with all that talent
