Will Bucs Stay Old School With Ring Of Honor?

It’s time to fire up a fun debate again. Coming Wednesday is the unveiling of the latest inductee to the Bucs Ring of Honor.
Of course, the Bucs have loads of deserving names to join the ranks of John McKay, Lee Roy Selmon and Jimmy Giles in the Ring.
Personally, Joe hopes the Bucs stay old school and have picked either Ricky Bell or Doug Williams, to take another step to restore the old Krewe of Honor. For those unfamiliar, the Krewe of Honor with McKay, Williams, Selmon and Bell, was part of the old Tampa Stadium but was demolished with the structure in 1997.
Of course, the Bucs could honor Williams and Bell in later years and energize loads of fans by inducting a Buccaneer from the Dungy-Gruden glory years.

It’ll be interesting to see what direction the Bucs go.

Williams won’t get inducted until Dominik is gone. So next year should be his time.

Doug Williams, end of story. No complaints on Jimmie Giles, but DW-12, should’ve went in before him. Personal differences between he and Dom shouldn’t matter…if that’s the case then Dom needs to go in the “ring of dishonor”

Yes it will be intreasting I really enjoy the throwbacks. I wonder if we will play the Saints for the throwback game since we have already played Atlanta and Carolina for a throwback game already?

I disagree with the idea that it must be old school, although I did completely agree with Selmon and McKay going the first two years. The criteria for entry should be importance/value to the franchise, not how long ago they played (it’s not the ring of AARP). While Williams and Bell were very important (and probably should go in eventually), I just don’t see how either could be considered more important to the franchise than Sapp and especially Brooks (I don’t see how Giles got in before them either).

My vote would be Doug Williams. As a younger Buc fan he’s the only guy if significance I recognize of the creamsicle years. Otherwise Brooks, no brainer as Romney would say

Batman was a good player. Team captain in 79, I think.
Give some of the early guys some recognition.
Gonna be a big gap forward to the dungy era. Mark carrier is one to consider during that super bad stretch.
Pro bowl one year and 1400 plus receiving yards.

I would like to see them mix in the new and old players of the Buccaneer history.
If they just go in order it will be years before we see Lynch, Brooks and Sapp!

I’m not against Williams…but he DID leave the Bucs over money.
My vote is different…Father Dungy. He’s the man, more than any other, who turned this team into a winning franchise.

Pete, Doug left the Bucs because Culverhouse was a total cheapskate and there was no Free Agency for guys like Doug Williams. You either took what the owner was willing to pay or you didn’t play. In my opinion, there is no other guy that you put in the Ring of Honor before Doug Williams. It’s embarrassing for them to put other guys in before him.

These picks should be men that played their entire or the majority of their careers here, and should be based on what they did here instead of somewhere else. Also, since it is the ring of HONOR, should be men that were true Bucs off the field as well as on. If they remain old school, my pick would be Paul Gruber. Played LT for 12 years and ended career on the field. If they go more recent, then Brooks and A-Train are the obvious picks. I am totally against a Doug Williams pick. He has continually badmouthed the organization and left as player dishonorably.

I understand that Doug was a good player but what did he really do here in Tampa other than lead us to the playoffs a time or two? He has had nowhere near the success HERE that a guy like Brooks or Sapp had who brought us super bowls and was very good for an extended amount of time. Just because he is older doesnt make him more disserving of anything. Brooks and Sapp belong in the ROH way before him. Thats my two cents.

Always an interesting and positive debate.
I’ll throw out Ricky Williams, who allowed that ’79 defense to rest with hard running, who allowed Doug time to pass and who unfortunately died far too young and is often forgotten.
Doug is a great choice as well.
I think we need to stay old school a while longer. Sapp and Brooks are shoo ins within the next 5 – 10 years. The fellow who mentioned Tony Dungy makes an excellent case as well. And HARDY!!!

Doug was the qb that provided some of the most exciting Bucs football.
He lead us from the land of humiliation. Sure we had the defense but Doug galvanized that team and this town.
Hugh’s supreme idiocy in not re-signing him was not his doing.
How did we do after Doug left? Never made playoffs again till Dungy.

That is great and all. I’m sure he was a remarkable player and turned our fortunes around, however he still left and had his real success with another franchise. I wasnt even alive when he played here in Tampa and whatever happened with him and Culverhouse I wont even speculate on because I will never know the real truth and I highly doubt anyone else does either except the people IN the organization.. and even then you cant believe everything you hear…. Brooks and Sapp and Dungy also helped turn our laughing stock of a franchise into something to be proud of and they actually stuck around and won a ring… Again speaking of wins and losses and success, there isnt anyone more disserving. Personally, I think it would be great to induct Brooks and Sapp before canton does.

Well if you had lived through the Williams era u would understand. One of the best times in Bucs history.
But surely brooks, sapp, lynch, a-train, Dunn, dungy, etc. all are richly deserving.
But to jump over Doug again would be dead wrong IMO. That would be a decision based on something other than than merit. Personal issues with Dom shouldn’t influence it.
