Jim Schwartz Is A Moron

March 29th, 2012
Raheem Morris was ripped by the Lions head coach

Bucs fans remember that Raheem Morris came from the Joe Maddon/Mike Tomlin school of team slogans.  These great coaches (the last two) — Raheem’s close mentors — like rallying cries and fancy lingo.

So it was back in the 2010 preseason that Raheem rolled out his “Race to 10″ to inspire his seemingly ugly Bucs roster to be the first team in the NFC to get 10 wins. Many players and fans also interpreted that to mean the Bucs were fighting to get to 10 wins as a season goal.

The Bucs won those 10 games, but Lions head coach Jim Schwartz thinks Raheem was talking foolish babble and told Bucs beat writer eye-RAH! Kaufman of The Tampa Tribune that a “Race to 10″ mindset is downright stupid.

“I don’t know if anybody here would say we just need nine,” Schwartz said. “I don’t know if anybody else plays that card game. I take that back. I have heard people talk about the ‘Race to 10′ and different foolishness. I think that’s foolish. The whole idea is to win every game you play and try to get in (the playoffs).

“Once you’re in, have some firepower that you can get through.”

Unfortunately, it has not been revealed what Schwartz thought about Raheem calling the Bucs the best team in the NFC when they were 4-2 that season.

Joe really can’t believe Schwartz is such a moron to call out a fellow coach, one he didn’t try to attack physically, for inspiring his team to a 10-6 season, one in which Schwartz’s team wasn’t very good.

Joe must come to Raheem’s defense. Schwartz definitely crossed a line. And hopefully some reporter will seek out Raheem for a response. Joe would pay to hear it.

  1. Brandon Says:

I’m sure Raheem will be humble in his response. I’m pretty sure the whole situation humbled him and in coming year he will emerge a better coach because of it.

  2. Eric Says:

He did achieve the race to ten ……..losses in a row.

  3. Pete Dutcher Says:

Schwartz may have overstepped a line…but he was 100% right.

And he didn’t call out Raheem by name did he? (I didn’t read the linked interview)

  4. Sensiblebuc Says:

    Spot on Joe.

Schwartz continues to show how big of a dick he is.

  5. Sensiblebuc Says:

How was Schwartz right Pete? The Race to 10 was a season goal not the ultimate goal. It’s just like saying that we want to win the division. Is that ALL we want to do? Of course not. Schwartz needs to shut his mouth.

  6. Thomas2.2 Says:

Joe I think you misplaced the moron tag – in reference to football of course.

The race to ten was the dumbest idea ever – no matter what rahrah meant. Lets say you win your first ten – so you are the first to ten and have accomplished your goal – only to lose your last six and miss the playoffs.

Schwartz is correct, rah has a very low football/coaching IQ.

  7. thegregwitul Says:

Schwartz is a clown and Raheem was fired months ago. That’s all anyone needs to know.

  8. raphael Says:

Actually Raheem did accomplish the race to ten, the year he started it was 2010…and He was 10-6. A MUCH BETTER RECORD THAN SCHWARTZ FIRST YEAR. Schwartz spent alot of time on the short bus apparently….what a Moron !

  9. raphael Says:

    wow your so clueless Thomas

  10. sunrisejeff Says:

I’d pay to have his response translated :P

  11. Eric Says:

Didnt he have a 2-0 record vs Rah, and beat him with his fifth string QB? Both games at Tampa?

And make the playoffs last year?

And avoid a ten game losing streak?

And not set a francise record for most points allowed?

    Who is the dummy again?

  12. doubles Says:

Rah said many times that his “race to 10″ was to be the first team in the division with 10 wins. Not that 10 was the finish line. Schwartz just doesn’t know what he’s talking about. This was not Rah’s downfall.

  13. doubles Says:

Also, what matters is number of wins. If his message was “eat a lot of turkey sandwiches” and he won 13 games people would be bringing turkey sandwiches to home games and there’d be a glowing character piece about him on BSPN. It’s only dumb if it doesn’t work, and it didn’t.

  14. Thomas2.2 Says:

To establish your teams goal at a place where it could possibly not get you in the playoffs is idiotic.

That is all Schwartz is saying – it is foolish.

Does it take a genius to establish your goal as playoffs? Or win the south? Or a home playoff game? Nobody is saying that the goal must be super bowl or bust. 40% of teams make the playoffs.

  15. Eric Says:

If they had held onto Kareem Huggins it all woulda been different.

  16. Vince Says:

Huggy was the straw that stirred the drink. :)

Eric and Thomas, it’s fun to watch you guys stroke each other in a circle jerk of hate.

Next draft story, or under-radar Free Agents story??…. A player story, maybe somethin on how Browns will set 1st round in motion?….

    Next..

  19. Sensiblebuc Says:

    @Thomas

    You’re reaching. Please stop.

A team goal is a motivational ploy, nothing more. How is the race to 10 any different than Gruden’s “win every quarter (of the season) system”? Both are mile markers in the midst of a long and arduous season not THE goal of the season. Every coach I’ve had on every level has had them and Schwartz does too if he’s worth a crap. That’s what makes the blast idiotic.

  20. Thomas2.2 Says:

    Sensible: are you dense?

To win every quarter you must win 3 out of 4, multiply that times 4 = minimum 12 wins. Quite different than a race to ten which could end with – ten.

  21. Bobby Says:

@Thomas….hey stupid..how many times does it have to be said that the goal was to be the first to win 10 games not ONLY win 10 games. Should we put you in the same moron class as Schwartz? Oh I’m sorry…we already have.

  22. Eric Says:

Did Chuck Noll ever say it?

  23. Sensiblebuc Says:

    Lol you’re not getting it.

“I don’t know if anybody here would say we just need nine,” Schwartz said. “I don’t know if anybody else plays that card game. I take that back. I have heard people talk about the ‘Race to 10′ and different foolishness. I think that’s foolish. The whole idea is to win every game you play and try to get in (the playoffs).”

Using Schwartz’s criteria, any specific goal e.g. The Quarter System is foolishness because “The whole idea is to win every game you play and try to get in (the playoffs).” Schwartz is a smug disingenuous moron. It was a goal, that’s it. The Quarter System is a goal. Please stop trying to defend him because you want to get after Rah.

  24. Bryant Says:

This is stupid. Raheem used that to motivate the youngest team in he nfl. It’s no different from a coach saying we need to win out division. Jim is an ass who shakes hands like a girl.

  25. Papawill13 Says:

When last year started the Detroit Lions had more goodwill and hopes from the entire country than any other team. After 6 weeks the Detroit Lions became the most hated team in football. NO ONE wanted the Lions to do well with their Dirty Play and Sore Loser Coach…

  26. thegregwitul Says:

I’ll say it again; Schwartz is a clown and Raheem was fired months ago. That’s all anyone needs to know.

Thomas and Eric; Had it been Raheem in place of Schwartz who acted like a classless thug when he lost against the 49ers and went after Harbaugh you would be calling for his head. Furthermore, let’s not forget the pillow soft schedule the Lions stumbled through (5-6 after a 5 win start) to get into the postseason with a, you guessed it, 10-6 record, the same record Raheem and the Bucs acheived in 2010.

The race to ten was a good goal going into 2010, especially since the youngest team in the NFL was coming off a three win season. As you stated in a previous post, goals can’t always be Superbowl or bust. How easy we forget that most people, most fans, were expecting a six win season at best, with most people expecting a repeat of the three wins in 2009. 2010 was a good season, the race to 10 was a success, regardless of the fact the Bucs lost to the Lions and their 10th string QB.

2011 was a trainwreck (apologies to trainwrecks everywhere). Raheem and staff were ill perpared, players were unfocused coming in after an extended offseason, the front office was stubborn/conservative (although to be fair they did resign a few of their own for big money) and only brought in a punter and didn’t have the young guys compete and earn their place and it blew up in their face.

We have a new coach with a different approach, the front office brought in impact players, we should land a playmaker with our first round pick, the second wave of free agency has yet to begin and the Falcons and Saints either did little to improve, are missing their first round pick or were leveled with suspensions by the league.

  27. below me Says:

    Schwartz is a putz.
He should’ve called Rah! out for “youngry”. Now that was tomfoolery!

  28. Kujolw84 Says:

Well Jim talk all the trash you want R.Morris at least has a Superbowl ring were is yours buddy O’yeah the ravens got rid of you then in the next 2 years won a superbowl loser.

  29. Thomas2.2 Says:

Jim has a playoff appearance. Rah is 17-31 as a head coach with last, next to last, and last division finishes.

Rah also managed to create the worst defense in NFL history as a coordinator.

Without a cupcake schedule and heroics from Free in 2010 – rah would be a 10-38 coach and manning a pop warner sideline as flyweight d backs coach.

Schwartz will compete for a super bowl in 2012.

  30. Eric Says:

Rah is a sure first ballot hall of famer for that 2010 season.

The lions coach is obviously inferrior.

Rah”s motivational techniques are rock solid.

  31. Rrsrq Says:

Did Schwartz mention, the race to 11 if the refs don’t blow the Winslow touchdown.

He was right in saying that a team needs to go out with the intent of winning every game.

So he wasn’t wrong. I think he was out of bounds for saying it the way he said it, but he did not say an untruth.

The Quarter System is foolishness because “The whole idea is to win every game you play and try to get in (the playoffs).”..

…Please stop trying to defend him because you want to get after Rah…

    -

I was a supporter of Raheem Morris as you may recall. And personally, I’m not saying his “Race to ten” phrase was the wrong thing to say.

However…Schwartz…is not wrong in saying that players should go out with the intent of winning every game.

By what you said above…players can win the first 3 games of a quarter and take the 4th one off? No. They must play to win every game. And that’s what Schwartz is saying.

He WAS wrong for clearly taking a did at Raheem. But he was not wrong in anything else he said.

  34. Patrick Says:

He did achieve the race to ten ……..losses in a row.

lmao that was funny as hell Eric!

  35. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Some of you guys are totally classless. Raheem is gone, why continue to kick him? What does that prove, other than you are an arse? Move on with your life, let it go. I personally could give a damn what Schwartz says, but I would guess Raheem would deal with this with a lot of class (what a concept). Some of you should perhaps try that.

  37. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I do have to admit, the trainwreck comment is pretty hilarious.

  38. DAN Says:

it was a race to 10, (ie be the first team to get ten wins, NOT hey, lets get ten wins and then glide, THAT WOULD be stupid)

  39. sandbagrudy Says:

someone is pissing on his feet in the urinal and he’s worring about something said two years ago with the roster he had he should be ashamed to open his mouth about any other coach

  40. Eric Says:

Richardson said earnest byner put him through a lot of drills today, and he’d love to play in Tampa. Good friends with Brooks he said.

If its a smokescreen it’s a good one.

He said he slipped a little out of the box and normally runs 4.3.

  41. SantosDatDude Says:

isnt ole Jimmy boy kinda contradicting himself with saying winning every game and getting into the playoffs…???…..i would think winning every game including the superbowl…

  42. SensibleBuc Says:

    @ Thomas

Schwartz is 18-30. He’s gone 4th, 3rd, and 2nd in a division with one great team (Pack), one bad team (Vikes) and one mediocre team (Bears). The Lions have bonafide elite-to-very good talent at premium positions and in the coaching: Megatron, Stafford, Pettigrew and Scott Linehan on offense and Suh, Vanden Bosch, Tulloch, Delmas and Gunther Cunningham defensively. They’ve also acquired a large amount of free agent contributors: Tulloch, Vanden Bosch, Houston, Al Smith, R. Sims, Scheffler, Burleson just to name a few. The defensive result:

    2011-23rd in yards & scoring
    2010-21st in yards & 19th scoring
    2009-32nd in yards & 32nd in scoring (30ppg; 392ypg)

Rah went 17-31 in a better division (two great teams and one bad team) while starting 10 rookies and missing the playoffs with a 10 win team for the first time in recent memory. He had a no HC experience coming in, a makeshift staff, and his big money acquisitions were Koenen, K2, Barth, Haynesworth, and Sean Jones.

    Defense:

    2011- 30th in yards; 32nd in points (394 ypg; 30.9 ppg)
    2010- 17th in yards; 9th in points
2009- 27th in yards and points

These two defensive-minded head coaches look pretty similar to me…except one got the full backing of their Organization and one didn’t.
