Scolding Peter King

March 20th, 2012

Joe once touched upon the following, even though it seems far-fetched on face value.

Joe, a year or so ago, was of the belief that some Bucs fans wanted Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik to go all “Hit Show” because it would not so much help the Bucs return to the Super Bowl, but it would provoke national sportswriters to write about the Bucs, and the mostly horrible national sports radio shows (excluding SiriusXM NFL Radio, of course) to discuss the Bucs instead of subjects such as the horrible non-basketball association or glorified croquet known as “golf.”

Well, Joe’s assumption may have come true. In popcorn-munching, coffee-slurping, fried chicken-eating, oatmeal-loving, beer-chugging Peter King’s Tuesday column on SI.com, the Hall of Fame columnist was scolded by a Bucs fan for not writing about the Bucs.

SORRY. MANNINGMANIA OVERTOOK THE COLUMN THIS WEEK. “Love your MMQB but I am a little miffed why in the whole article you mention nothing about the Tampa Bucs Buccaneers signing Vincent Jackson, Carl Nicks and Eric Wright. Like all of us Buc fans I was hoping for some love from the sports writers and a much better year! It has to get better right?”
– Ken Nahrwold, of Tampa

You’re right — I owe the Bucs some attention for what they did in free agency, and it’ll come in the next two weeks. My apologies, particularly because I’ve been on ownership there to prove they’ll spend for a winner. A preview: I like Jackson a lot, and I like Nicks a lot — assuming he keeps his weight in check. Great signings. Eric Wright’s just another guy. I wouldn’t have paid for him. But there’s no question Tampa’s significantly improved, and if I’m Josh Freeman, I’m very happy with the attention GM Mark Dominik paid to help the team score more points.

While Joe is confident SI.com covered Dominik going all Danny Snyder last week, it was almost old news by the time King put down his beer Sunday night and began banging on his keyboard typing his MMQB. So Joe totally gets how bigger news pushed Bucs news to the back burner for King’s column.

Still, Joe just finds it a little creepy that fans of any team rejoice in a team making news just so they can see or hear a national sports personality write or talk about the Bucs, to get “some love.”

Isn’t that what Bucs cheerleaders are for?

King was being too lenient when he considered Wright to be just another guy.

Lets see how things are come september. I was crying last year for a complete overhaul, and we are almost there, i.e., new coaching staff, new offense , new defense….Now we still need to lose some baggage, and upgrade for the complete overhaul (here to lookin at you Quincy, sean jones, winslow, )

  3. Buc Fan South Tampa Says:

Good points, but…I just lvoe sitting down in fron of NFL Network’s “Total Access” or ESPN’s “NFL 32″ and hear an hour of the Broncos, Jets, Packers, etc and nothing about the Bucs. We have been putting up with that since 2008. (Of course we got coverage when Morris got fired). Seeing your team in print or on national TV is real entertainment for Bucs fans. Of course, when JoeBucsFanTV goes national then we will be there.

  4. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I have no problem with the Bucs being under the radar, especially with our youth. Keep talking about the Cowboys, Patriots, Steelers, and now the Broncos. We will just keep on winning games (hopefully).

  5. stevek Says:

Maybe if Peter King could step away from the fridge, and watch some REAL news.

This guy is a tool, and if I were Mike Golic, I would be pissed off that I look kind of like the football world’s biggest TOOL PROGNOSTICATOR!

  6. RIs_Buc Says:

I think Florios ommision from FA winners was way worse…
Florios follow up article even worse,
then there’s his explanation on 620 today… Absolute garbage.
It’s not that we should be a winner or loser it’s how PFT thinks we are irrelevant.
I really wish Joe turned on comments for the previous post – Florio needs to be boycotted by TB fans for real.

  7. stevek Says:

    Amen about Florio,

This guy screwed up by leaving Tampa Bay off of the list.

He can’t even man up and say, “Yeah, I forgot… Sorry”.

  8. ATLBuc Says:

Who the hell cares if the national media is talking about the Bucs? Winning games is all that matters. Win games and national exposure will come.

  9. FlBoy84 Says:

Agree @ATLBuc. As far as Wright goes, since Dominik referred to him as “my guy” during the news conference, I’m a bit concerned he might turn out to be more like Lumpkin, Black or Clayton.

  10. Cmurda Says:

@ Hawaiian. Me too. I like us under the radar. I mean, we even were under the radar in our 2002 season. After beating SF, we were supposed to get owned by the Eagles. Then, I specifically remember most “experts” picking Oakland. I remember Tony Kornheiser p[icking us from the get-go but Wilpon had the Raiders the whole time until just days before where he must have watched our defense on film and picked us.

Think all of this “Eric Wright is average” talk might be a motivator for the guy?? I’m excited about him!!

  12. TopDoggie Says:

Every thing I need to know is on JBF.

  13. Stevek Says:

    @ATLBucs,

Can your post be said about Tebow?

Who cares if he can’t throw, he wins.
