National Love For Greg Schiano

February 1st, 2012

After mingling among national media types for the past 48 hours, it’s clear to Joe that there’s massive love out there for the Greg Schiano hire.

Perhaps it’s because Schiano’s been working at Rutgers in the huge New York/New Jersey market for the past 11 years and somehow brought college football into that region’s sports consciousness — where it was barely a blip on the local radar before. And so many of the national media types are based there and actually know who Schiano is.

Surely it’s not because of the Big East titles Schiano racked up.

Regardless, everyone seems to love the Bucs new head coach, even the ornery, calls-it-as-he-sees-it Adam Schein of FOX Sports and Sirius NFL Radio. Schein offered Joe an earful yesterday.

“I think it’s great. Perfect fit,” Schein said of Schiano. “He did a great job at Rutgers. He’s been a pro coach for a long time. He’s no-nonsense.  He’ll establish a great attitude at Tampa Bay. A perfect hire by Mark Dominik.

“I think Schiano, the way that he controls an environment, the way that he coaches, the discipline, he’s the perfect guy to replace Coach Morris. The team obviously quit on Raheem in the final 10 weeks.”

Clearly, Schiano is viewed universally as a disciplinarian, a motivator, and a guy who knows how to succeed with what he has. Joe just hopes he has the Xs and Os know-how and game-management skills to match that. He needs to be the total package to win the NFC South.

Schein really looks like Nick Kroll….. or Ruxin for those who love The League. Waaaaaaay more annoying voice than Kroll though.

Considering how Raheem Morris was one of the worst game managers and in game decision makers I’ve ever seen, I think Schiano will be fine. Morris set the bar so low that it will take almost no effort to eclipse what he left behind for memories. I like the hire of Schiano and think he’ll look like the smartest man alive compared to some of the decisions that Morris and Olson made on game days.

  3. Vic Says:

Amen, gotbucs. This is like Parcells taking over for Rich Kotite.

@BigPictureGuy right on the money with that comment…

I’m excited about Schiano, the draft, free agency, a lot of good stuff coming up. I’m just wondering when Greg will have his staff put together. I’m hoping for Butch and Campo for the defense but like most of us here, I’m especially intrigued to see who comes in as OC and QB coach.

Great Post GotBBucs, and I agree. Coach Schiano and Mark Dominik wil eventually bring Tampa a winner.
I think what Coach Schiano will bring is another good talent evaluator to assist Mark Dominik.
I think Tampa could have drafted better, but it is hard to “hate” Mark Dominik, because I really think he means well.
How could he have known Benn, Grimm, Mc Coy, and Price were all gonna get hurt ?

No way can I see Tampa having a 10 game losing streak under our new head coach.

  6. bucfanjeff Says:

That’s great and all, but we still need a freakin’ staff.

  7. jvato24 Says:

Butch Davis would not only add a good DC, but the guy is a hell of a Defensive Talent evaluator to help the team.

Im not so sure we take the chances on off the field problems. Not with Schiano.

  8. stevek Says:

    @ BIGPICTUREGUY:

    Schein does look like Ruxin,

    “You all got Andraped!”

  9. stevek Says:

    @ APPLE,

Right on, a 10 game losing streak was tough to swallow. I don’t think it will happen under Schiano, but if it does I strongly doubt that it will be with such a lack of effort.

Effort is key to turning the ship around, and also some FA pieces.

  10. stevek Says:

    jvato,

Butch Davis is a MUST hire at this point, he had a helluva a D at UNC.

  11. Fatmosh Says:

Your last two sentences are the key, Joe. Even if he does restore order…this is the NFL, you can’t win on that alone.

    Ask the Falcons.

  12. BucFan813 Says:

    ur not here..make videos..stop lies

  13. Bobby Says:

    @Bucfan813….????????????????

  14. raphael Says:

joe- is bucfan813 calling you a liar? time to open up a can of whoop a$$

  15. Patrick Says:

When people talk about Butch Davis, why do they always leave out the fact that he got 2 super bowl rings in Dallas……and instead focus only bring up his stint at Miami and Cleveland.

I’d like to see him as our next DC.

  16. admin Says:

    Joe here,

@BucFan813 – Normally Joe would have just ex-communicated you for lies against Joe and misrepresentations of Joe, and for coming after Joe maliciously for absolutely no reason (repeat offender of calling Joe a media fraud.) But Joe is so amused by your stupidity, he’ll keep you around a bit.

You really think Joe is lying about going to Indianapolis as credentialed NFL media? If Joe were to concoct BS, he would have made a phony trip to the Pro Bowl instead and had grass-skirted, brown-skinned native women tending to his every need.

  17. Buczilla Says:

I think next year during Pro Bowl time each Morning Cup o’ Joe needs to feature a grass-skirted, brown-skinned native woman!

  18. admin Says:

    Joe here,

@Buczilla – Excellent idea. Joe appreciates his readers who think outside the box.

  19. Capt.Tim Says:

Man, I hope he’s right about Schiano, I really do.
    But I don’t see it.

  20. eric Says:

I thought winning the NFC South was easy and inconsequencial.

    No accomplishment at all.
