Bucs Want Coach Who Can Work With Dominik

January 6th, 2012

Bucs beat writer Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times stopped in for a visit with Tampa Bay sports media czar J.P. Peterson yesterday on WQYK-AM 1010 and talked about the Bucs’ job search to fill the void left by jettisoned coach Raheem Morris.

Naturally Joe took notes.

The Bucs want to “interview someone that can work with Mark Dominik. But they are all on one-day contracts,” Stroud said.

“Not having Barrett Ruud and Cadillac Williams had an impact and was a calamity down the stretch. Coaches sort of expected it but they bought into it and” then came 2010.

“Keith Milliard never had a chance to work with his players in an offseason, but that’s the job they chose.

“You have to start with ownership. I’m a big believer in good organizations win championships. They do what it takes to win, they invest financially and they pick good people.

“One of the reasons Jon Gruden is not here is because they wouldn’t invest in free agency and get guys in their prime and spend money and they were not willing to do that.

“2010 was miraculous, I mean pretty incredible. But those decisions [on lack of veterans] came back to bite them. The coaches, believe me, they are on the field and in the classroom with these guys, they tried to impart upon management with wouldn’t fly this year and guess what?

“The Glazers do pay attention to the rest of the league. They take their time. Because Jeff Fisher is popular, doesn’t mean a thing to them. They have been around as long as Jeff Fisher. They will march to the beat of their own drum.

“There are a lot of good football coaches out there. I think it will be very risky for them to hire a first-time head coach after what happened with Raheem and that is unfortunate. Maybe the best coach is Rob Chuzinski, but a first-time head coach, is that the best move? That’s a different job than you have ever had before and you will learn on the job and make mistakes.

“Guys are going to wake up and not be on the team, they won’t realize it.

“I think they will get a guy who has head coaching experience. Jeff Fisher worked for an owner, Bud Adams, who is one step from Bill Bidwill or Hugh Culverhouse. What is Fisher looking for? Commitment. I don’t know if that is what he sees.

“Mike Mularkey is really intriguing. He’s not a young guy any more. He’s good with young quarterbacks. He knows the Falcons, he knows the Saints. He’s an intriging guy.

“Chip Kelly? It’s a big risk coming from college football. How will he do? Will his offense work with Josh Freeman? When you have LeGarrette Blount who gets a quarterback killed, when you have Mike Williams who can’t stretch the field, when you have Kellen Winslow who can’t run any more, let’s see how you do.

“I don’t think they want a guy who wants to run personnel. They will have to get along with Mark. I would be surprised if they hire a first-time head coach and that may be the best way to go, that guy might be a superstar.”

Joe, unrelated, during coach media videos you often hear somebody off camera saying ‘2 more questions’, or however many. Who is that person dictating the question amounts, and\or time left? Is there a standard time\amount?

  2. Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

Unfortunately, the Glazer Kids grew up with Mark Dominik, he is their age, and their friend!
Both Jerry Angelo AND Bill Polian are availiable, but the Glazers will not fire Mark Dominik, though the rest of the NFL knows he is the problem.
Look at all the interest in Raheem because the NFL has TAPE, and can see Tampa’s lack of Talent and depth.
The ONLY one who see’s Mark Dominik as a “Rockstar” is everyone’s friend Joe, who seems to have adopted the “WDAE Model” for intentionally pissing off sports fans.
I was at the Press Box talking sports recently, and proudly said I an a regular on JBF.
I had a hard time defending Joe from total contempt for his position on Mediocre Mark Dominik.
I greatly respect Joe, I just disagree with his stubborn stance with regards to Mark Dominik.

It sure looks like Mike Sherman might be coming here to Tampa, and he has general manager experience as well.
He is a players coach, after all, he got into Sapps face for his player.

I think if we neutralize Mark Dominik by not allowing him final say in player acquisition, and improve our scouting department, Tampa will be OK.
Free Agents will have to be acquired, and we will have to draft wisely, but I think we are going to be just fine, in a few years.
After all, we simply can’t GET any worse!

  3. MTM Says:

So Buc fans are f@#$ed! What a joke? See how many people in Tampa renew their season tickets for that crap.

  4. Hillbilly Heaven Says:

There isnt an experienced coach in the league that will step into this mess without control over his staff and serious input into player acquisition.

I have been a fan all my life, since day 1, and I never thought we would ever be back in the dark days. I fear the worst.

Cancelled my season tickets when Rah was hired
Cancelled my Sunday Ticket after week 10

There’s nothing left to do but wait until the Glazers wise-up or sell to DeBartolo……dare to dream

  5. MTM Says:

So the Rockstar is in the Glazers ear for all decisions. That spells disaster.

  6. Sensiblebuc Says:

    @ bucfanjeff

I would imagine that that’s Johnathan (?) Grella the team’s PR guru.

  7. Jake Says:

It’s really amazing that it has taken this long for the mainstream sportswriters that cover the team to revoke the Glazer’ Free Pass !

  8. Joe Says:

    bucfanjeff:

That’s Jonathan Grella. He moderates press conferences.

  9. A REAL Bucs Fan Says:

“One of the reasons Jon Gruden is not here is because they wouldn’t invest in free agency and get guys in their prime and spend money and they were not willing to do that.

That’s ironic, since it was the Gruden era that put us in cap hell because of over spending on Free Agents.

  10. aj Says:

bucfanjeff, it is most likely a pr person. There may or may not be time considerations, the pr guy may just notice the player/coach has had enough and cuts the interview for them, or the q-and-a may just be going in a direction the pr guy does not like.

Happens a lot, most franchises loathe the idea of someone doing an interview without pr present.

  11. Macabee Says:

Translation: The Bucs want a coach that will do what Mark Dominik says, as did Raheem Morris – no questions asked! Only coaches who will pledge to take 21yr old 7th rounders and practice squadders to the playoffs need apply!

  12. A REAL Bucs Fan Says:

    @Apple Roof Cleaning
“It sure looks like Mike Sherman might be coming here to Tampa”

That’s a strong assumption. Because Sherman was one of the first people interviewed?

They said they are going to take their time…in fact, they even said it might take as long as 3 weeks. Gee, what happens in 3 weeks?

Mark Dominick is an excellent GM. The Glazers kept him from spending up to this point, and they know it. That’s why he is still here. Mark my words…we’re getting someone good.

  13. Ash Says:

A REAL Bucs Fan, Cap hell was mostly due to Rich McKay. Allen was brought in to clean it up. Us fans were under the impression that once Allen got the cap under control spending would follow but it never did.

  14. Thomas 2.2 Says:

So, let me get this straight.

Great coaches who will object or overrule Dom’s poor decisions are excluded from the coaching search but bad coaches who will not are candidates.

And you wonder why Rah was hired and our franchise destroyed?

I hope Stroud is way off. Dom is clueless and lost.

What scandalous pictures or info does he possess on the Glazers?

  15. A REAL Bucs Fan Says:

    @Ash
That’s because the Lockout was looming. All the owners except a couple held back spending so that they would have more leverage on the players.

Last year there is no good excuse, but they years leading up to it made total sense from a business perspective.

  16. A REAL Bucs Fan Says:

    @Thomas 2.2
Where’s your list of coaching preferences?

  17. Thomas 2.2 Says:

I heard on sports radio from a listener who said that he was told by Bruce Allen’s general counsel when hen was here that the Glazers initial instructions to Allen upon hiring were – trim 30 million from the payroll.

The listener said that they actually trimmed 37 million and Bruce and John objected when they were asked to slash more – that is what led to their dismissal.

If true, this makes perfect sense, is consistent with what we all have suspected and suggests that the Glazers and Clay Aiken haven’t been completely truthful. Shocker!

  18. Ash Says:

No excuse being the lowest payroll in the league. I can see not spending all your money but they were / are just plain cheap ass owners

  19. Ash Says:

    since Manchester United

  20. Brad Says:

Hiring a coach that can work with Dominik (I hope he gets demoted after a coach is hired) would be my last requirement. Finding a coach that has discipline and can bring in good coordinators would be top on the list. There were two people I didn’t want for a head coach next year. Morris or Sherman. If the Glazers want to change the perception of what the fans think about them they better not hire Sherman. What happened to looking at everything and taking their time in hiring a coach. If they stop at Sherman I would just assume they keep Morris. I know a coach isn’t going to do alot as far as an increase in ticket sells but hiring Sherman would guarantee a decline including mine.

  21. Thomas 2.2 Says:

    A real buc:

Unrealistically, I want Cowher or Fisher.

Realistically, Joe Philbin, Chuck Pagano, Mike Zimmer or Brian Billick.

  22. k1ngAdroc Says:

Brad is right. They should not tell us winning is the only goal and will have an exhaustive search to bring in the best possible coach…. then immediately turn around, not interview JF and limit the field to coaches that will work with Mark Dominik.
After the performance last season and the state of the franchise, MD should be willing to giving up some power and/or decision making for the sake of the organization. MD is lucky to have a job and his employment should be contingent upon the “right guy for the job” wanting to keep him in place.

  23. Thomas 2.2 Says:

It really sucks that instead of hiring and paying the best coach at any cost, we have owners that want a coach that gets along with our dispensable gm.

  24. bucfanlostiniowa Says:

@Thomas 2.2 LOL at that Clay Aiken reference, I thought I was the only one who thought that!

  25. Brad Says:

Why aren’t we hearing anything from the Glazers or Dominik on other possible candidates? We’ve heard all week about Gray and Sherman. If that’s it, it was a small as$ rock. I want to hear who they are targeting. Do freakin something to give fans hope for crying out load.

  26. Thomas 2.2 Says:

I borrowed that from you or another commenter – I liked it and won’t claim that I was the original author, I’m not sure who to credit. If it was you good job.

  27. FLBoyInDallas Says:

I don’t have a problem with them only wanting a HC that will agree to work with Dominik as GM instead of wanting their own guy. As long as they give the new head coach veto power over personnel moves he doesn’t agree with, that is. If Dominik retains final say we’ll still have okay drafts but since his free agency record thus far is totally reprehensible it likely means years more frustration for fans who want to see the Bucs win consistently.

  28. bucfanlostiniowa Says:

    Nope wasn’t me either

  29. FLBoyInDallas Says:

2.2: it was me. I said a few days ago that Dominik is as much a rock star as Clay Aiken. And I’m standing by it, too. Rock star my ass.

  30. Sgt Mike Says:

I just do not get the “Indifference” they have towards Jeff Fisher without so much as an interview. I’m not 100% on Fisher but if you tell us we will leave no stone unturned then what gives? Like I have been saying, the Glazer boys run this team now. When Malcolm ran it he wanted a winner. He knows to make money you have to spend some. The Glazer boys only know what there father has given to them. Malcolm was a self-made man unlike his sons who did not learn a thing from there father. This could get ugly guys but I will reserve my distaste of the situation until we see how it unfolds. By the way, what Football qualifications does Mark Dominick have other than working within an organization?

  31. Sgt Mike Says:

Buccaneers.com’s Bio on Dominik states that he has a BS in Sports Management but says nothing about ever playing football even at the Pop Warner level. Hmmmmm. I even played up until HS. Just the facts, you decide.

  32. Mean D Says:

Joe must be jumping for joy at this news. We will get a bottom feeder HC but he will be forced to work with Joe’s bosom buddy Dominik.

  33. Plbuc Says:

Wow Hilbilly Heaven you are so right! We are entering the New Dark Ages that original Bucs fans thought were gone forever. Two thirds of the problem still exists… the Glazers and Dominik and we will know soon if the new coach completes the trifecta. Nothing short of overhauling the roster, bringing in established free agents, and no nonsense coaching staff will save this franchise from this free fall. Also, bring in someone like Ross is using Carl Peterson in Miami to handle the real GM duties. We can talk all we want but until the Glazers spend or sell, we are doomed. They have not spent since the Super Bowl year of 2002. Enough said.

  34. Northend Says:

i think we are jumping the gun a little.when we hired gruden it came as a surprise we were after mooch.i think sherman is being floated out there.i read a article earlier today that we are holding info back and speculation from the author was that we like some college coaches.pedersen from boise, kelly from oregon and maybe miles from lsu.or that due to playoff contact rules we are unable to “publicly” speak to some guys.maybe billick is in play.maybe clement is and we don’t want a war with another team needing a coach.relax a little.i think we r gonna come out alright here.

  35. Sensiblebuc Says:

    @ PlBuc

You lost me at “Carl Peterson” and “Dolphins” bro lol.

Check out any Dolphins-related article on PFT and you can see the disdain Fins fans and Chiefs fans have for the guy.

  36. passthebuc Says:

The Glazer’s will take heat no matter whom the select. If they select a seasoned coach they will be criticized by those thinking it is just a cop out trying to fill seats. Sherman falls in that category. If they go with a high flying assistant or coordinator, they will be accused of not spending the money. They are in a no win situation. But hell, that’s why you get the big bucks.

  37. CC Says:

    @ Pete
Are you related to the Glazerhouse clan? You defend them as is if they do everything they can to build a championship team and organization HERE in Tampa. Ever since ManU has been in the picture they could give a spit about the Bucs as long as they are making $$$. And with the NFL Television contract they are guaranteed $$$ without even putting people in the stadium. I’m willing to bet my house that they will do squat when it comes to signing FA’s and qualified coaches. We will have the lowest or damn near lowest payroll once again. Me personally, I think team Glazerhouse sucks and hope the rumors of a sale are true. Because until then there will not be much to get excited about.

  38. Northend Says:

    http://www.bucsnation.com/2012/1/5/2684898/adam-schefter-there-are-candidates-the-bucs-really-like-that-we-dont

    link to that story

  39. Pruritis Ani Says:

I m ambivalent about Dominick…I think he is neither a Rockstar nor the complete idiot he is made out to be. My theory is that he is here for one of two reasons

    A. He’s doing everything exactly as he is told to do….the proverbial “Yes man”

    B. He’s got photos of someone fondling furry farm animals

  40. Big Marlon B Says:

    @ Sgt Mike

i have a MS in Sports Management, and one year of JV football in HS. i guess that means i’m more qualified than Dominik lmao

  41. Thomas 2.2 Says:

    Big Marlon: you are.

  42. Steve From Oregon Says:

To all the fans that are enamoured with Jeff Fisher, I just dont understand why. Yes, he has years and years of experience, but he has not been very successful.

    It’s just curious to me……

  43. Tye Says:

Much like Northend has suggested, I too have been thinking that maybe the rason we are not hearing many Names for HC interviews is maybe because they are looking at a HC from the college ranks that have been in the bowl games and can not be publicly sought after legally yet…. I have wondered about if it is a Les Miles and if so we won’t hear of it until after Monday night at the earliest……. Just a thought but it does make since!… Can’t say that I would be excited about that move because I am not big on college coach going straight to NFL HC!

  44. mbaby Says:

    Mr.Dominik needs 2 read this.http://det.scout.com/2/1146264.html

  45. KWBUCFAN Says:

I think Dominick is a good GM. Not as bad as some say but look at some of the players he got us. Not special but can’t find gems in every round every year. If he gets to spend money I think you will see his skill as an talent evaluator. We have talent on this team and it will show only when we get some valuable free agents.
One more thing, Raheem is a good coach, just had a lot to learn. It cost him his job.

  46. Steve From Oregon Says:

Tye….i don’t know, Les Miles or Chip Kelly…..Id be pretty excited about both, if nothing else by the unknown that the two bring to the position, and you cant argue about how successful both guys have been.

Again, who knows how that translates to the NFL, but it would be exciting.

  47. A REAL Bucs Fan Says:

    THE TRUTH IS…

…the Glazers are not talking to ANYONE. Neither is Dominick. So these media types are making things up.

    @Thomas 2.2
Don’t really like any of those choices. That’s cool though, we all have our preferences. I prefer Grimm or Clements myself. I don’t think the Bucs will be able to underspend with either of those either.

  48. Northend Says:

    just read tressel is interviewing.

  49. bucfanlostiniowa Says:

Like I said before what quality coach is going to want to come here with a glazer stooge, who helped run the franchise into the ground, in charge

  50. Brown Bags Have Been Removed Says:

After reading the story and all your comments, I have to ask one thing. . . who the F is Stroud? You mean a beat writer puts his thoughts together and he is now the mountpiece for what teh Glazers are doing? Seriously, you guys are getting worked up over a beat writer’s thoughts?

Puh-lease. We need another beer over there.

  51. 5thgenflaboybucsfan Says:

THE NFL SUCKS AND SO DO THE GLAZERS!!! I’ve been a tru bucs fan for years. living in polk county, the phosphate mine, orange juice makin hard working capitol of fla, watching the bucs kick a!# was a great way to spend a sunday afternoon. now, with all the flags thrown almost every play, all the stupid rule changes every year, and the fact that our bucs team is owned by some nerdy lookin LIARS, who look like they like little boys more than football, i think i’ll just go to the high school games in FORT MEADE from now on. I hope they move the team.

  52. Brad Says:

@brownbag.. I just want to hear something other than they interviewed Sherman and Gray. That’s pretty much a big thud for the fans.. At least give the media a list of possible candidates or have more interviews set up. Give us some movement. Or tell us your waiting for the playoffs to be over to interview coaches that are on those teams.

As far as college coaches.. I don’t want any of them. There’s too much uncertainy with that and very few successes. I’d most likely go with a solid coordinator and wouldn’t decide until the playoffs are over to interview the coordinators from any of them. None of the retreads that are jobless right now aren’t too exciting either.

  53. BigMacAttack Says:

I hope they don’t hire a College Coach, but if they do, my preference is Mike Gundy. He’s a ball of fire, but this team needs a proven leader right now that is already in the NFL. Experimentation time was 3 years ago.

  54. TPCMatt Says:

    Work “with” Dom? That’s a knee slapper…

  55. eric Says:

Chucky beat Sherman 2/3 when he had Favre. But, Chucky beat a lot of people.

He did have high scoring offenses at GB and Texas A&M.

Served one season as Packers GM.

After further review he has some positive qualities, although that last season at GB was a nightmare.

Near the end the Ravens beat em 48-3.

Not horrific, but hope we can do better.

  56. BigMacAttack Says:

I’d take Chucky back in a heartbeat.

  57. buckeye bob Says:

Cincy folks say Mike Zimmer will be getting an interview. Owners will never hire someone who could not work with MD. He has a great relationship with the owners and they will want to get a guy on board that can get along with him. For the most part they cleaned the whole building out and MD is still in place. If they did not believe in him they would have let him go as well…just saying he is the GM for the long haul.

  58. Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

@Eric, the last season Sherman had at GB before he was fired was a disaster.
He had 4 KEY players on Injured Reserve.
Sherman did not do great in College Coaching, but that is more about recruiting anyway.
It is true, he does not have a lot of Personality, but he is a solid coach, and a pretty good picker of talent.
I can’t believe it has come to this in Tampa, we HAD Jon Gruden.
But, we also have the Glazers, who would not give him what he needed to win, then fired him when he didn’t win.

The choices for a head coach these days are slim, and many other more attractive teams need a coach as well.
Tampa is NOT all that attractive of a place for a coach to come to, with the Glazers and Mark Dominik.

Despite what we would all LIKE to believe, a new head coach is not going to come in here and turn us right around, with the current players.
We lack overall talent, and depth as well.

  59. bucfanlostiniowa Says:

Ok whoever said Tressel is getting an interview, where did you read that cause i can’t find anything about it anywhere

  60. Northend Says:

Lostiniowa, got it from footballscoop.com .it was posted on todays dated scoop.they are very reliable with info over there. I chrck that site a few times a day.

  61. mainebuc Says:

Joe, what the buc is going on here? It has been four days since the firing of Raheem Morris and all I have heard for interviews are Mike Sherman and Jerry Gray. What gives, why the complete silence?

  62. jvato24 Says:

Apple .. I dont buy that for a minute. This is the NFL and all the Bucs need to be a playoff contender is for Freeman to play to his abilities and the Bucs will be on the Verge of 9-7 or 10-6.

The Bucs Defense needs help but may have faced as many 3 and outs last season as any team in the league.

  63. Plbuc Says:

The top defenses still get to the playoffs even in this era. Hire a Dungy type with DC credentials to fix the mess on defense and an established OC or QB coach to run the offense. Draft Blackmon and get a RB and let’s see if Freeman improves. If not, move on. As for defense, rounds 3,5-7 should be defensive players and sign some FAs. Dungy and Gruden had Kiffin. The Bucs will need as least 2 quality coaches soon so I’ll be very curious to see who the new coach assembles as his staff. If the Glazers are to be believed, they need to spend money on coaches and players. Learn from your mistakes and remember how you built a winner the first time around.

  64. Plbuc Says:

@Sensiblebuc. You’re right dude.My bad. What I meant is that the Bucs should get a consultant or someone to help close the deal with FAs and the coach search.

  65. Mike Gundy Says:

    Hire me! I’m a man! I’m 40!

  66. JSmalls Says:

” If he gets to spend money I think you will see his skill as an talent evaluator.”

Do people forget Clayton, Ward, Leftwich, Nugent, Simms and Crowell from 2009? And those that think Morris didnt have a say in personnel you are agenda driven. We know for a fact Freeman and M. Lewis were his picks because he said so. He also said in his last presser that Blount and Tanard were his guys. Couple that with the report that Dom wanted Talib gone but Morris got his way – Doesn’t exactly sound like a dictatorship.

  67. Garv Says:

It sounds to me like Mike Sherman. He fits what Stroud is saying. Does not mean he’s always right but it does sound like the Royal’s would go for it.

I know a lot of fans would be disappointed if it is Sherman but I hope he’ll be given a fair shake. He has positives! Not my choice but the choice of those who matter……probably no matter who is selected.

  68. Bobby Says:

Ahhhh yes. JoeBucsFan….the place for the clueless and the lost to come post drivel for others that are clueless and lost. Joel Glazer gets in front of everyone and says ‘we are going to spend whatever it takes to put a winning football team together’ and because Jeff Fisher doesn’t get an interview suddenly he’s a liar and we’re gonna get Harry Dinklebutt from the college ranks…… You guys are fun to read though. Raheem and the entire staff gets fired and the bile and hatred for the entire Bucs organization hasn’t slowed down a bit. You’re like a bunch of little children who cry and pout if you don’t get your way. “Jeff Fisher didn’t get an interview??? WWaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!”
You do realize that getting your self esteem from a football team is unhealthy don’t you? If the Bucs win you feel good about yourselves because you are living your little football fantasy through them but if they lose…..well…..you have your little buddies here on JoeBucsFan to commiserate with. Sad…….

  69. Brown Bags Have Been Removed Says:

Remember that Bucs were suspected to be chasing Parcels while Dungy still around. The media circus was such that Parcels ended up running from the altar.

They are not likely to tip their hats at all. In fact, they are pretty darn good at the sport of negotiating and using media for leverage and power. If they are chasing Green Bay’s OC, they don’t expect him to ask for ultimate personnel power. A rising coordinator is the route to go.

At teh same time, the fact that they kept Dominick tells us all that the Glazers kept him from spending in free agency. Don’t harp so hard on Dominick at this time.

If people have anger they can’t contain, go kick your dog and get a beer. NBut everyone needs to settle down.

  70. mark2001 Says:

The handwriting is on the wall.

With a good coach and the same philosophy, we can expect 9-7 from here on out with an occasional first round bounce out in the first round of the playoffs….in good years.

Why wouldn’t someone want to spend a couple grand a year for that. On the other hand, a “cat of nine tails” on ones own back would result in the same amount of pain with much less cost.

  71. Bobby Says:

‘The Handwritings On The Wall’….LOL! Perfect example. Let’s see…have they picked a HC yet??? That would be…NO. Has FA even come around yet??? Again….NO. Is there any indication from anywhere that Joel Glazer isn’t going to do exactly what he said he was going to do?…..that would have to be NO unless you think not interviewing Jeff Fisher is the end of the world for you and if that’s the case I’d have to say… go back to staring at your wall…..

  72. TheProsUseAdvoCare Says:

Whoever this guy is, he doesn’t seem to understand what he is talking about. To say the Bucs didn’t give Gruden enough Free Agents or spend enough money….. I’m not even gonna go there. These quotes are ignorant.
