Winslow Beating Himself Up

- Kellen Winslow’s bizarre Mr. Miyagi/LeGarrette Blolunt impression late in the Packers game is not what has him upset, says Donald Penn.
Of all the plays in the Bucs’ loss at Green Bay, the one that was truly a sledgehammer to the gut of the team and fans everywhere was Kellen Winslow dropping a 2-point conversion in the fourth quarter that would have tied the game at 21.
Without that drop, Raheem Morris surely (maybe?) forgoes the second onsides kick late in the game because the score would have been tied at 28. What could have happened after that is anyone’s guess.
Speaking on The Donald Penn Show yesterday on WDAE-AM 620, Penn talked about Winlsow being furious with himself for long after the dropped 2-point conversion, Penn said Winslow holds himself to an extraordinary standard and he tried to talk him down from the ledge after the Green Bay game.
Joe doesn’t doubt that Winslow is broken up. While one surely can question the body language Winslow has displayed on the field this season, Joe knows Winslow’s teammates often refer to him as a perfectionist and as a guy committed to being the best he can be. His durability following numerous knee injuries is a testament.
Penn went on to praise Winslow’s growth as a blocker in the run game and say that he gives Winslow grief about the failed hurdle shown above. It’s good to know Winslow can take some locker room ribbing.

Look three years is a long time. We should at least be competing for a playoff spot, not enduring yet another disappointing season. We see teams every year have much quicker turnarounds than this. Not this building a team as slow and as cheap as you can method. Great example of cheapness: Kregg Lumpkin.
We should already be much better than this right now. The thing that disappoints me is that we knew what the weaknesses were on this team last offseason, and Dominick and management did nothing to address it! And those weaknesses weren’t any different this year. More of the same, just like we knew it would be.
This is not a very good team. We’re mediocre at best, really not even that. Two of our four victories were against the winless Colts (who we struggled to beat) and the Vikings (struggled as well). And yes, we were competitive against the Packers but don’t you guys realize their pass defense is 31st in the league? Our red zone offense was frustrating as usual to watch and we constantly didn’t take advantage of opportunities we had. A secondary that I thought was much better before this season, is undoubtedly one of the worst in the NFL from what we’ve seen this year.
Yes, we have talent on this team, but we’re not that talented. Our linebackers need to all be replaced (except Foster), we need two cornerbacks, another WR, a RB to help out Blount, and a DT for depth being that we’re injury prone at that position all the time. This is the year we have to dig into free agency and spend some money for some veteran talent and leadership. They don’t have to be retirement old, but a couple of 30 and 31 year olds isn’t going to kill this team. C’mon. You don’t have to be like the Eagles and go crazy, but you get my point. I’d rather bring back Brooks than have Quincy Black playing for another year.
You think we would’ve won the Super Bowl if we hadn’t gotten guys like Simeon Rice and Brad Johnson? Both of whom were free agents.
My judgement on Raheem is really kind of mixed now. He hasn’t done a good job, but he really has not had much help either. Not a big fan of him, but hopefully by some miracle we’ll upgrade our roster this offseason through free agency. Assuming he returns, he needs to hire a defensive cordinator. After that he needs to get a new OC that will use our beast RB Blount and maximize our passing game. We should be ok if that happens.
One more thing: all of ya’ll that keep saying the “youngest team in the NFL” crap. Yeah, we’re going to always have the youngest team when your only offseason acquisitions are rookies and undrafted free agents. So I guess if we fail again to make the playoffs again next year it’ll be ok, because we’ll still be the youngest team in the NFL with this “youth only, no free agents” method.

Winslow shouldn’t beat himself up about push-offs. It’s not completely his fault that he’s lost his quickness and can’t separate from defensive backs. If I were him I’d push-off too rather than stay covered every play.
Instead, the blame should be shifted to Mark Dominik who refused to add a playmaker/speed guy to threaten a defense and take some of the pressure off our multitude of possession receivers.

Winslow is a boss and a key piece of the offense. I laugh at tools who suggest we need a new tight end (a certain radio host in the Tampa Bay area that I’m not allowed to name, no not Voldemort). He’s probably gonna lead the team in receptions for the 3rd straight year. Beast.

I’m not ready to kick Winslow to the curb, because he does still produce and there are no alternatives available (yet).
But while his blocking has “improved,” it has gone from non-existant to terrible. His knees are a liability, and he is emerging into Jeremy Trueblood territory for being good for a penalty or two a game.

No one thought K2 was a blocking tight end. He is none for his ball skills. The entire team has been in a slump. I laugh at you tools that are bashing K2. Our WR have the ability to go long, we saw it last year. K2 is an elite TE, get over the bashing and get ready for improvement of the offense.

@Pat…what an ass. First of all, this is NOT year 3 of a rebuild. This is Josh Freeman working with two 2nd year receivers, and a second year RB that didn’t play half of the season last year. Add to that a D-line that has a rookie DE, a second year DT (was two 2nd year DT’s until McCoys’s injury) a rookie Mike LB, and now another rookie starting at DE with Bowers and no off season to gel and you expect the playoffs??? Just how stupid are you anyway?? Never mind…you’re post answered that. What other team have you seen in the playoffs with the youngest team in the NFL when the QB is factored in that youth?

Winslow wasn’t worth the picks, yet he’s led the team in receptions the last 2 and going to be 3 years. I’d say that’s worth MORE than 2 draft picks. Elite players like Kellen don’t come around very often. And Bobby you’re right, a lot of people wanna call this year 3 of the rebuild when in reality it’s only year 2.

@Patick: good points. Now that the core of the team has been filled, it’s time to see the Bucs front office spend some dough on some secondary. There’s going to be some big name free agent who the bucs should most definitely pay for.
Just as Green Bay scooped up Charles Woodson. We need to police up a defensive franchise blue chip type player. McCoy aint it

I love me some K2 and he was well worth the picks. He’s been the ONLY legitimate consistant threat on the team. Opposing teams know where he is on every play, guaranteed. He needs to work on not being so obvious on his push-offs but I’ll take the penalty now and again b/c his catching ability, commitment to the game and swagger far outweigh them. Stocker’s been coming along better as of late and I hope he pans out quickly into a TE that can take some focus off of Winslow. It doesn’t help if our WRs can never get open either…

It’s obvious K2 best days are behind him and drafting Stocker was a wasted pick for the value. Remember we traded up for Stocker too. K2 has had a great career and we will be remember as a great tight with potential but never achieved “greatness”. No doubt he has been our leading WR but in Tampa thats not saying much. Never really had dominant WRs. We will see what the Bucs are about this off-season.

Out of all players on the team, why are complaining about Winslow? He’s the least of our problems. And of course, he doesn’t have really much help at all, so get off his arse.
