“That Chatter Has Quieted”

July 7th, 2011

Many Bucs fans were in stunned disbelief when the St. Pete Times cranked out a story several weeks ago claiming the Bucs already had made the decision to cut Aqib Talib when the lockout is lifted.

Joe quickly tried to soothe Talib fans and fans of intelligent NFL management, writing that the unsourced claim by the Times didn’t fit Mark Dominik’s approach to the Bucs and didn’t make any logical sense, considering under that scenario the Bucs would lose a valuable player without getting anything in return.

It seems there’s an update to the Times’ claim, courtesy of a live chat with Times columnist John Romano on TampaBay.com yesterday. A chat participant asked whether the newspaper still stands behind its claim of Talib being a goner. Romano dodged the question like Josh Freeman avoids a rush.

Do you Times guys still stand behind the report of the Bucs releasing Aqib Talib at the end of the lockout?

12:56: John Romano
Shortly after his arrest, there was a lot of chatter from One Buc Place that he would not remain on this roster. That chatter has quieted considerably.

Does anyone answer simple questions any more?

LOL, The Tampa Tribune seems quite adept at dodging questions.

Nicely said. I believe this is one of only a handful site that doesn’t paraphrase(unless absolutely necessary), answers questions regardless of the reaction that may occur, and isn’t afraid to ask difficult or sometimes unpleasant questions.
There is a world of difference between the coverage of the Times and JoeBucsFan. The difference being that one is based in reality whilst the other is…. well, has the St Pete Times ever really been based on reality?

Rick Stroud I thought was also the guy that claimed we traded for Farve and the deal was signed, sealed, and delivered. Tribune lost all credibility with me when they swore Bucs would release Talib, it just doesn’t make sense when we’re on the cusp of greatness

Rick Stroud does not work for the Tribune, nor did the Tribune claim Talib would be released; quite the contrary in fact.

    Well, shoot…

This the Fourth Estate at it’s best. Their shared slogan is “we report, you decide”. Romano is absolving the SPT of any responsibility for their earlier report and laying it at the feet of their unnamed Buc sources. There is a difference between news and opinion. It sounded like news to me when it was reported. If I recall correctly, it was reported in the SPT, not the Bucs Blog. When you play loosely with facts versus opinion, you are on shaky ground.

This really disappoints me, I enjoy the Times far and above the Tribune. I feel like they have better reporters, writers, beat writers, information.. everything. I hope this is only a bump in the road.

I’d feel better if they were honest: “Hey, at the time we had a 50/50 shot, now it’s looking more like 80/20 and we just don’t like those odds anymore” Aish

  8. Garv Says:

It is my opinion it is best to keep Aqib with the caveat that the next slip is his last. He’s too valuable to cut for nothing in return and the fact is………we don’t KNOW all the facts in the case.

I DO know he wants to be a Buccaneer and appreciate he recent participation in the Buc/Freeman “mini camp.”

I dont live in Tampa so I do sometimes confuse the papers, but I could’ve swore Stroud is the reporter that claimed his sources said the Bucs would cut Talib…

  10. Pete Dutcher Says:

Yet again we see proof that the media is out of control and unaccountable.

    FreemanBomb5:

Yes, Stroud and the Times did; Kaufman and the Tribune did not.

I’ve been to Tampabay.com one time in the last 6 months. They have lost it over there and I avoid liberal papers like the plague. No offense to my lefty friends, just stating facts. I do go to Lightning Games so they still get me there.
