Roger Goodell Paints Team Glazer In A Corner

June 10th, 2011

Adam Schein expects Bucs fans to take over the streets of Tampa if Team Glazer raises ticket prices.

As part of his damage control in an attempt to cleanse his hands of the very mess he helped create and front, NFL strongman Roger Goodell has been holding conference calls with individual NFL team season ticket holders. Earlier this week, it was Bucs season ticket holders’ turn.

During this dog and pony show, Goodell let it be known that the lockout he orchestrated was to help the fans, to keep ticket prices stagnant if not lowered and, in so many words, blamed the players for $8 beers.

Goodell made no secret that if the NFL was to win this labor war, the result would be keeping costs for fans down.

Joe’s pretty certain that Team Glazer did not have advance knowledge of Goodell’s thoughts.

(Joe’s not saying Team Glazer will raise ticket prices after the lockout. But it’s pretty brazen of Goodell to try to tell his employers what they can and cannot charge for admission, concessions and parking by filling paying customers heads with absurd expectations.)

When news of Goodell’s statements reached the inbox of popular radio personality Adam Schein, he took to his SiriusXM NFL Radio microphone Thursday with nothing less than outrage at Goodell.

In short, Schein was appalled that Goodell would pander to Bucs fans in a gutless attempt to have Bucs fans ignore the blood on Goodell’s hands and try to con Bucs fans into believing a win for the owners in this asinine lockout means a less expensive experience for fans at The CITS.

Schein also, correctly, believed Goodell painted his employers, Team Glazer, into a no-win corner. With a horrid inflation looming on the horizon since the feds will very shortly quit printing money (which means, hello inflation and higher interest rates), it’s not at all difficult to believe operating costs for Team Glazer will go up. It simply stands to reason.

If Team Glazer, say, raises the price of parking by a mere dollar, it goes against what Goodell pandered to Bucs fans and makes Team Glazer to look like the second coming of Lucifer.

“Many Bucs fans — whether it be right, wrong or indifferent — don’t trust the Glazer family,” Schein said. If, after what Goodell said, Team Glazer raises ticket prices after an owners victory in the labor impasse, “there will be unrest in Tampa Bay.”

Joe knows if this happens there will be gnashing of teeth, cursing at bartenders and the haters of sports radio shows will be fired up with new and ample ammunition.

All because a puppet of a commissioner has no shame.

I can barely afford to go now… if they raise anything i will have to watch it illegally! I want to support my team but I also want to feed my family… catch 22!

Why put up a picture of a post MANU win?
    Oh, those crazy hooligans!

I’m not sure if anyone is even paying attention, but the Bucs have lowered prices by an extreme amount. (at least in the upper level). My 2009 season tickets for 2 kids & 2 adults were $3560 not including tax and service charge. Now in 2011 the exact same seats are $1,800. That’s half! I’m no huge Glazer supporter; I just want to see some football. For this price; if the lockout ends in a timely fashion I will be repurchasing my season tickets. I was the biggest complainer on here about not being able to afford to go anymore, but I have to give credit where credit is due.

  6. Atrain WD40 Says:

Bucnjim is right on this one. i actullay got greedy and upgraded our seats.

Agree with Bucnjim… I have had club seats in the new stadium since 98 and while the price is much higher than 13 years ago, they have not raised ticket prices in 3 years. If people want to go to a game, there are always $30 seats available in the upper deck. Ironically it was the upper deck that was mostly empty last year.

  8. Atrain WD40 Says:

lisabucsfan1 the people who buy $30 are the ones hurt most by the economy.

Joe, I don’t disagree with the commish painting the Glazers into a corner. I don’t want to turn this discussion into a CNBC Money discussion, but printing money causes inflation, not stopping the printing (increased dollars in the market demanding the same amount of goods = higher prices). The damage is likely already done though.

    No problem factoidboy! 🙂

    Atrain,

I think the fact that walk up tickets the previous few years were $89 and that really hurt the Bucs cause. Tampa is a crazy area filled with hospitality & service oriented workers who work weekends & holidays. There are so many people who would love to go to games, but because of schedules are not able to commit until last minute. This year I see they are offering a $50 game day ticket which I think most people would not mind paying. It still makes for a $100 day, but this is closer to what a lot of people are willing to part with.

He wasn’t blasting the players, he was blasting the union. Owners, players nor fans are to blame for this lock out. Government is. These unions have guaranteed a monopoly on professional football. Until the government is out of the NFL, there will be high prices and no true competition from alternative leagues.

The Glazers r cool for dropping ticket prices. Godell is ball less for trying to make it look like he’s championing the Fans, when it’s all to apparent he’s a flunky for the worst case peers( Jones, Snyder, and the boys) . He has none of his predecessors strength of character, or passion for our game. He is a wag tongue lackey in the worst sense.

Amazing that our team was being built well within the budget of the last agreement. We have a young exciting team, high expectations, lowered ticket prices. Heck, they even lower beer prices. We would good to go! Yet we can’t see our team because or 5 owners aren’t as smart as ours, and can’t manage to pay the bills!! It sucks. Yeah Dan Snyder, you pay 100 million to Fat Albert Haynesworth- with no PRODUCTiON clauses!!!!- then what does a McCoy or Suh suddenly become worth? The more you analysis it, the smarter Buc Management looks! Sorry Glazer haters, but it’s true. For all the screams of cheap, I wouldn’t trade our young team for any out there. Smart business is smart Business- on Wall street or in Tampa stadium!

I’m a season ticket holder and I was in on that phone call. I didn’t hear Commisioner Roger Goodell paint the Glazers or any owners in a corner. He stayed pretty neutral throughout the 30 minute phone call giving pretty straight forward responses to some pretty good questions. I have the conversation taped. When asked about lowering ticket prices and parking prices, he basically responded that the Team Owners set those prices and not the commissioner. This was not quoted verbatim, mind You. I’m going into my 2nd year as a season ticket holder and 15 year Bucs fan.

  15. PWNASAURUS Says:

100% Right Capt Tim and these Goobers don’t get it. They are swayed to easily by JP Peterson and the other Glazers bashers in the media who seem to worry more about payroll then production.

  16. Pete Dutcher Says:

What’s the matter, Joe? No new news has come out that you can use to bash Goodell, so you have to resort to last weeks news again?

I noticed how you single out the Glazers when it actually affects all the teams. But my question is this…how do you know his employers have not told him this is their intent?

Goodell is getting a lot of blame from you, and he is only doing what the owners tell him to do. Unlike the hundreds of players that have little say in the NFLPA* negotiations, all the owners have a say.

Frankly, I think the big mouth owner in Dallas is one of the main reasons we have not seen the lockout end. He has a goal and he refuses to compromise on it because of the shiny new stadium.

It amazes me that Goodell is being condemed for doing his job, while you are saying absolutely nothing against Smith, who is representing hte players.

On at least three occasions since the lockout started, Smith refused to negotiate.

The truth is, the players ARE getting too much. How short are peoples memories??? For years, fans have been complaining that players get too much. Why?

Because it keeps cap-strapped teams from competing for good players. Something needs to be done…and in the end, it should work out better for the game…just like the last settlement helped improve things.

  17. Pete Dutcher Says:

    @Pinnacl3
I think Joe mentioned last week that he did not listen in on the call. So basically he’s going by other people’s quotes.

  18. Pete Dutcher Says:

    @Capt.Tim
    That was very well said!
