Gene Deckerhoff To Be Around A Few More Years

June 2nd, 2011

Just because the Bucs cannot make any player transactions doesn’t mean the Bucs cannot conduct personnel matters.

The man whose voice has personified football weekends in Florida for so many years will get at least two more seasons on the job with the Bucs. Per Buccaneers.com, the voice of the Bucs (and Florida State), Gene Deckerhoff, has re-upped his contract to be behind the microphone of Bucs radio broadcasts.

A Florida institution for more than three decades through his work with the Buccaneers, the USFL’s Tampa Bay Bandits and the Florida State football and basketball programs, Deckerhoff is possessed of one of the most recognizable voices in sports broadcasting.

About to enter his 23rd season calling Buccaneer games, Deckerhoff remains wildly popular among Tampa Bay fans and highly respected in the field of sports broadcasting. In fact, he recently won his 12th Florida Sportscaster of the Year award for his work in 2010.

It’s hard to believe there are many Bucs fans out there who know no other voice than Deckerhoff’s. That’s how long Deckerhoff has been calling Bucs games.

Good news for a good guy. If you ever by chance run into Deckerhoff on the street, he won’t big league you. Really, really nice guy and, more importantly, damn, what a set of pipes!

Eventhough he’s a Nole, Sundays wouldn’t be the same without him.

  2. Espo Says:

I don’t think I’d listen to a radio broadcast without him.

  3. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

As a Nole and Bucs fan I consider myself extremely lucky to have Mean Gene the Talking Machine as the voice of my teams for damn near my whole life……..the man’s a legend

  4. Adam Says:

Caught! Touchdown Tampa Bay! Mike Williams with a juggle job!

  5. Amar Says:

    RUN MICHAEL RUN MICHAEL RUUUUUUUUUUN!!

  6. OAR Says:

62 yards, good golly can he do it? Here is Dave Moore…the snap… the hold…the kick! It iiiiiiiiiiiiiiis GOOOOD, GOOOOD, GOOOOD, BUUUUCS beat the Eagles! MATT BYRANT IS MY HERO!

Among others and TDs! Afterall, the voice of the Bucs has called 674 touchdowns, since 1989!
Used to play his broadcast over the televised games, until the damn Janet “gotta do something to get back in the spotlight” Jackson nipple slip caused to long of a broadcast delay!

  7. Joe Says:

    OAR:

Sirius Radio has all NFL broadcasts and it is delayed much more than over-the-air TV delays. So with a DVR you can synch it that way.

  8. OAR Says:

    Joe
    Thanks, that’s great idea!

  9. Jordi Says:

Awesome. Gene is probably my favorite announcer ever. Hearing him every fall is like welcoming an old friend back into the house.

I love Gene Deckerhoff, I could not imagine Tampa Football w/o Gene!

  11. SkookumSmitty Says:

I OFTEN watch games with the TV audio down, and Gene turned UP on the radio. He is THAT good. As a broadcaster, let me also say the Gene is one of my heroes, and I have been listening to him do Bucs games for as long as I can remember.

Big ole’ 99 reached up and got a paw on it!

    hand= paw
    feet/foot = wheel

Great news! I can remember back to Jesse Ventura calling games, and even before that, though the announcers don’t stick out in my memory; but to me Gene is the most consistent part of the Bucs identity through the years. Growing up in Brooksville, Gene’s voice WAS the sound of Sunday afternoon after church, if I wasn’t lucky enough to be at the Sombrero with my Dad.

We have the greatest color guy in all of sports!

  14. Joe Says:

We have the greatest color guy in all of sports!

    Dave Moore???

Nothing against Moore at all. He’s pretty good. Joe was always fond of Scot Brantley doing color. Thought he and Deckerhoff were a perfect combo just like Deckerhoff and P.T. Willis were for Florida State games.

  15. Chris FWC :) Says:

Dave Moore is there to ‘help’ along Gene. Not that Gene is slippin’. Just Moore corrects him sometimes.

    I miss Brantley, a Gator.

  16. Oahubuc Says:

Oh, I mixed up my terminology there in a hurry. I meant we have the greatest play by play guy in all of sports- even though he gets things wrong. I’m a homer just like him.

  17. Tuggz Says:

I am in the same boat. Moore is good, but I very much miss Brantley.

  18. Adam Says:

I don’t miss Brantley. He was always saying stupid things in his deep woods southern accent, like “He’s a good guy. He comes from good stock.” Dave Moore is more knowledgable, but I can’t stand his raspy voice. Sounds like he swallowed some gravel before going on air.
    Love Gene though!

Caught! No, interception! No, he dropped it! No, he only got one foot in!

  19. BigMacAttack Says:

BUCS WIN! BUCS WIN!! BUCS WIN!!!

  20. SebringSmitty Says:

    Touchdown !! Tampa Bay !!!!
