“Everything’s A Full Go From Here”

May 19th, 2011

Bucs second-round pick Da’Quan Bowers is running. He’s cutting. He’s making football moves.

Bowers shared this great news after emerging from his Clemson cocoon to sit down with Steve Wyche of NFL.com. You can watch the video here. At least part of the interview, perhaps more, also will air on the man channel, NFL Network, tonight during Total Access, which begins at 7 p.m.

Wyche penned a story from his chat with Bowers, as well. It seems Bowers wasn’t up to speed on the details of his January knee surgery for weeks.

» He didn’t know that his knee injury was problematic until he realized he couldn’t participate at the combine. A red flag went off in his mind, as it did with several teams.

» Bowers didn’t know the extent of his knee procedure until repeatedly hearing some of the reports about the surgery. He thought he was simply having a minor scope and even though doctors told him they had to do additional work — there was a minor micro-fracture procedure — Bowers didn’t know how serious it was.

» McCoy has called several defensive players to have their own workouts and Bowers would consider it. However, based on his rehab and the fact he’s not under contract, it’s unlikely he would participate in any physical activity.

Joe’s glad to see Bowers running — and talking. Perhaps he’ll get intimate with the local media soon, too. Though WDAE-AM 620 host Ian Beckles said he doesn’t expect Bowers to say much until he’s under contract. “If he says the wrong thing about [his knee], it’s going to cost him.” Beckles said.

Joe still doesn’t understand the scope of Bowers’ injury. And there’s no reason for the Bucs to reveal it.

All Joe cares about is whether the guy is lined up on opening day and healthy enough to get through a season. If he can, and he can produce more than sackless Kyle Moore, then the Bucs will be smiling broadly about their risky draft pick.

This has to be a positive. If he didn’t know his injury was serious, who is to say anything different? Nobody is going to know his body better than him.

  2. Espo Says:

To me, this shows that he just wants to play ball. He didn’t realize his knee was such an issue because he is a hard headed beast that can play through it if he needs to.

  3. Espo Says:

He’ll probably look at opposing tackles like minor speedbumps too, and plow right over/through/around them with ease.

I’m easily encouraged, in case you can’t tell….

  4. Buddhaboy Says:

All we can say for sure, is that “we will see” . Offseason sucks. I am a little nervous of all of the ‘potential’ that is on the DLine and not proven performers. YOu know what potential gets you, BJ UPton.

  5. Thomas 2.2 Says:

Microfracture surgery. That is a lot more invasive than minor meniscal repair. Uh oh. He still cant be worse than Kyle Moore, GMC or Roy Miller as rookies.

  6. Espo Says:

GMC wasn’t bad at all, Thomas. He was no Suh, but looked very impressive before he got hurt.

  7. BigMacAttack Says:

Nice, very nice. The young man said all the right things, he has a positive attitude and I think he will be welcomed with open arms. I hope the Bucs give him a highly incentive laden contract that will give him the opportunity to make some big bucks since he dropped from the first round. Sacks, Tackles, Forced Fumbles, Bat downs, all things that I would like to see these guys get extra compensation for.

As Chicago says “We Can Make it Happen”.

  8. BigMacAttack Says:

    Go Lightning!!!

  9. Tuggz Says:

Bowers was around to actually answer a question? His agent must have accidentally overslept that day.

  10. Joe Says:

GMC wasn’t bad at all, Thomas.

Uh-oh! Time to run for cover.

  11. Pete Dutcher Says:

    LOL, Joe!

    Love the way you think!

  12. BKNYfootballhead Says:

The article states “that there was a minor micro-fracture procedure” – this could mean simple, quick outpatient surgery, an operation typically considered minor and non-invasive . Microfracture’s true crutch is only recovery time for which the cartilage needs time to heal and grow. Marques Colston has undergone two microfracture surgeries in his short NFL career only to produce 1,000 yards four out of five seasons. Professional athletes undergo microfracture commonly; Bowers might just be a victim of draft gossip. Imagine if the Bucs had a play in the seeming rumors.

  13. Big Marlon B Says:

BKNY, are u from Brooklyn NY? I thought for sure I was the only Buccaneer fan representing Brooklyn on here lol

  14. Jorge Says:

Dear GOD…Please oh please help all the sick, poor and hungry peoples of the world…and at a close second..LET THERE BE FOOTBALL VERY VERY SOON!!!

I can’t wait to see all of these guys getting after somebody, anybody..

Man am I jonsing for some damn foozeball…;-)

  15. Tom Says:

“— there was a minor micro-fracture procedure — Bowers didn’t know how serious it was.”

Well, that should clear up any doubts. There shouldn’t be any questions about whether Bowers will ever have to get microfracture knee surgery, he already has.

It pretty much killed the NBA careers of Tracy McGrady, Allan Houston Penny Hardaway and Chris Webber. Amare Stoudamire is a well known successful case and is still going, youth at the time of injury having likely helped as well as his decision to shut things down until he was ready.

So if anyone wanted clarification on why the guy fell. You have your answer.

  17. Ravelston Says:

    @Tom

Given what he’s been doing , it obviously wasn’t on a load bearing surface. Totally different from Stoudamire et al. I had one 9 years ago, was pain free for 7, could have another if I really cared that much. It’ll be similar/less of a problem than K2s – which really hasn’t been a problem. I’m actually very encouraged by what has been reported.

  18. MOBucs Says:

He sounds like a man on a mission to me! End this lockout now GOD! Pretty please!

  19. Architek Says:

Something special about this team coming together!

  20. Bucbeliever Says:

If I didn’t know any better, 10 years from now we might have the same # of Lombardis as Packers/ 49ers/ Cowboys/ Steelers.

This team has the potential to be one of the greatest squads in the game ever. Freeman plus many others would be first-ballot hall of famers. Again…just looking at the potential…

(Maybe I’m just so excited b/c I just watched some week 16 highlights vs. SEA…gettin’ kinda pumped)

    GO BUCS!

  21. Espo Says:

    Thanks Pete!

  22. jocko Says:

Weird that he gave someone else an interview after you concocted a conspiracy theory to explain why he wouldn’t give you an interview. Maybe he just thinks you’re SMALL TIME?

Nice try jocko. Using your (il)logic, that would also suggest the Bucs flagship radio station is “SMALL TIME” as is the St. Petersburg Times and the Tampa Tribune.

    Wanna try again?

Joe made it abundantly clear in the post the issue was not about Joe, but about a pattern. Those remedial reading classes just aren’t getting the job done, huh?

  24. bucswin Says:

Bowers is in hiding! He’s hiding something! LOL.

  25. Capt.Tim Says:

The Human story is what is really interesting here. This young man finishes his career, has what he believes is a fairly routine procedure, and waits for the draft. Numerous reports have him going as the top pick. He’s gotta be on top of the world. Then he works out at his pro day. Not good, but everyone knows he’s recovering- at least he showed he’s getting better- right?

Then the rumors. And basically , in the two weeks before the draft, he drops from possible first pick to bottom half of the 2nd round! And no he’s asked to justify being a 2nd round pick!

Man, this poor kid has been on a rough roller coaster the last few months. I hope he is strong, and has some decent support around him. He still will get a couple million to help out.
But man! He missed the big payday by just a couple weeks! He’s gotta be bummed out!

  26. Thomas 2.2 Says:

    Espo:

Just google biggest bust of 2010 draft and you will find numerous draft web publications concluding it was mccoy so far.

  27. jarrett Says:

capt tim first good post from you in a while. I am shocked that you were able to make it through that post without trying to take credit for something, or telling us how great you are. Nobody likes self glossing douche bags so hopefully you can return to your form of old. you are right on the money on this post and i didnt need you to tell me you were to grasp that.

  28. Kevin Says:

    @Thomas2.2

I did google “biggest draft bust of 2010 NFL draft”. Didn’t see one article written in 2011 that called GMC a bust. There were a few articles that called him bust that were written in April of 2010, BEFORE the draft even happened.

You called it out, now would you please cite your source?

  29. jocko Says:

Why Joe, you seem to have deleted my comments. There’s a conspiracy afoot!

  30. McBuc Says:

Kevin, you beat me to it. I just did the same thing and found the same results. The articles written in 2011 or after the start of the season do not mention him at all. I was interested to see the USA Today top 25 busts did not include any Bucs.

  31. BigMacAttack Says:

Wow, that was quite the backhanded compliment. jarry.

Comparing NBA players and NFL players is apples and oranges. D linemen run forward, explode and cut and usually don’t have to travel very far. Their biggest foe is taking hits from bad angles to the knees. BBall players run about 7 miles per game, full speed to half, cutting, jumping and playing totally unprotected by pads. I think using NBA shortened careers is a bad example and not very relevant. I also guarantee you that every NBA player named above still plays BBall regularly, be it Rec Leagues or 3 man, but few if any ever quit playing the game before age 50+, just not at the highest level, NBA. NFL players that retire injured rarely play football again, at any level. Again, it’s apples and oranges.

  32. BigMacAttack Says:

I want to give props to Caddy. He protected Freeman so well last year, his value is tremendous. I don’t recall the number of 3’rd downs through the season that Caddy didn’t get the job done, and Freeman took a sack, but it has to be upwards of 95% efficiency. Great job Cadillac, I hope they keep you around.

  33. Capt.Tim Says:

Jarrett- nice of you to read all my post! As far as tellIng everyone how great I am- on contraire’. I have been bashed for pointing out that Ruud( who I am not a big Fan of) is not supposed to be our run stopper. I got accused of being a hater and a racist for saying Aqib would likely Screwup again- two weeks before his latest incident. I said for months that we would draft Clayborn. Posters here said I was an idiot, and no way would Clayborn go that high. Unlike many here, I don’t mind arguing the point, even with posters I respect.

But after being ganged up on and bashed, when the experts( or events) prove me wrong, I have no problem reminding everyone. I consider it redemption, And even a little. Smack on the guys I always arguing with- most of whom I’ve been talking to for a couple years. The have usually begrudgingly given me props, as I have done to them when wrong.

Never had anyone bitch about it until you.sadly, I don’t remember any of your post. And I read them all. Perhaps you should pick a side in a Debate, and hurl some well reasoned justifications at us, so that we remember you!
Otherwise, you just sort of blend in to the background Noise

And that ain’t my style! Even our friend ,Thomas2.2 inches, contributes more. And he’s never been right about anything! But he debates with enough smoke and mirrors, that you are forced to play your” A” game, or he’ll catch you lying and really infuriate you!

To some, this is a quick stop for Buc information. For the Hard core, this is like a courtroom to present your case. All of those guys are die hard fans, and think they are GMs at heart. To get your point validated by the experts is a major score. I have been on the other side of those pronouncements, and it just cripples your argument. All you can do is concede yor point with as much Decency as possible. And it ain’t easy.
And the more people who jump on you, saying you’re wrong, the louder you can crow if proven right.

Sooo, maybe you took my post the wrong way. Or maybe you were one of the guys jumping on me, that was proven wrong. Either way,you remember. So, as Mark Twain once said” it doesn’t mater if they are talking good or bad about you, as long as they are talking about you!”

  34. Capt.Tim Says:

That shouda been” when events prove me right”, not price me wrong. Might been a Freudian slip! Lol

What do you think, BigMacAttack? Was that nice enough, or to I let him off to easy? Lol

  35. Capt.Tim Says:

Or , he could be right! Maybe i’ve become a self glossing ! It’s not like someone sends you a letter pronouncing your transformation. I guess you find out when someone on”JoeBucFan” calls you one! 🙁

It breaks the heart. And all this time I thought I was being “witty”. Only to find I’m a self glossing, self waxing, douchebag.

    Ohh, the Pain. The pain!

  36. McBuc Says:

Hey Capt, I think you just beat out Pete D for the longest post on Joebucsfan.com…

  37. Bucnjim Says:

    Captain; Self Waxing?
Hey you could star in the next Karate Kid; Wax on……Wax off…..

  38. OAR Says:

    Foos-ball? Buncha overgrown monsters man-handlin’ each other…

  39. OAR Says:

    Self-waxing? I knew it! This is joepornfan.com!

  40. Capt.Tim Says:

Damn, ya know I got nothing but love for Pete- despite Our disagreeing on Aqib Talib. But I sure didn’t want to take THAT title from Him! Longest post ever! Damn, I really am a self washing, self glossing douche bag!!

  41. Thomas 2.2 Says:

    Kevin:

Go to nfldraftjunkies web site re draft busts, you will see mccoy listed as the bust for 2010. This was published in late april 2011. There are others i can find for you if you wish.

  42. Capt.Tim- The "self glossing" Says:

Hey Thomas 2.2 inches, Joe just posted that the “incompetent” Glazers made a BILLION dollars on their kickball team. That’s gotta be tough for you to hear!

At least yer not self glossing >.< !

  43. Chris FWC :) Says:

    My waxings go Brazilian.

    @Oar and Jorge LOL!

    I said Joe Montainya.

Love to hear a Bucs player named in the same sentence as MONSTER or BEAST.

Oh, he’s very popular Ed. The sportos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, wastoids, dweebies, dickheads – they all adore him. They think he’s a righteous dude.

  44. McBuc Says:

Chris, great Farris Bueller reference…I am not sure how to spell that though.

Pete and Tim…just messing with you guys, I enjoy reading both of your posts…well, maybe not the ones about waxing.

  45. Kevin Says:

    @Thomas 2.2

OK – I’ll agree that this site listed McCoy at the 10th biggest bust of the 2000-2010 draft (they label him as the biggest bust of the 2010 draft).

However the site does make this note: “but a year is too short a timespan to truly consider someone a ‘bust.’” That’s the key point. Expecting a rookie GMC to be Warren Sapp in his prime will always lead to disappointment.

  46. McBuc Says:

Kevin is right, not to mention his numbers were close to a rookie Sapp numbers…

  47. McBuc Says:

    Thomas:

The draft junkies are a blog site (no offense Joe), but I would like to see the bust reports from the so called experts. You know, people that work for the mainstream nedia, NFL, ESPN, etc. You must have had to dig deep for the junkies.

  48. Thomas 2.2 Says:

Capt tim: here are 2 things i am right about:

2 seasons under rah = 0 playoffs and 0 second place or better finishes in the division. Also 0 improvement with the defense,

Sorry that i was wrong about the number of buc players and staff in trouble with the law and the league – i predicted a lot fewer.

If i recall correctly, capt tim you predicted a better than .500 season during rah’s initial campaign. Whoops!

  49. Thomas 2.2 Says:

Well many of you predicted mccoy to be a better rookie than suh, like capt tim, whoops again! There are many who have addressed the mccoy bust question, most concluding that it is too early to tell- but based on year 1 like the draft junkies said – biggest bust is GMC.

  50. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Here we go again, Thomas and his hatred of GMC, even though the article is about Bowers. You said it yourself, it is too early to tell if he is a bust. There’s nothing more to say, so don’t. Yes, if he plays like a rookie for the next couple years, then he probably is a bust. But I’m thinking he played like a rookie last year because, I don’t know, maybe because HE WAS A ROOKIE!!! I thought he played fine for a rookie DT, about what I expected. Of course I wish he played better, but I wish everyone played better. You really need to stop it with your criticism of him. It gets really old, and more importantly, it’s not fair. It really comes across that you want him to fail and be a bust. I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and say that’s not true, but it is certainly how you come across. GMC is a Buccaneer, which is the team we all cheer for (allegedly). Why don’t you try to support him and not be such a whiny little b!%ch anytime his name comes up.

  51. Capt.Tim- The "self glossing" Says:

Sadly, Thomas of the 2.2 inches, you are wrong yet again. I made no prediction about Raheem’s first season as Coach, because I didn’t discover “JoebucFan” until the end of that season, in Febuary.

I predicted MCiy would be a better fit for the Tampa 2, due to his speed, and Suh’s bad knee. I am not ready to concede that point yet, as one season is not enough( Although that Friggin Suh is a monster!!). That day may come, but not yet

I also predicted that you would continue to watch your” Grudrn gone wild “tapes, and be a pain in the arse of true Buc fans.

So- I was right about one. You lied about another, and one is still up in the air- that about right?

  52. McBuc Says:

How c an you say the defense did not improve, the stats say otherwise.

Now, I do not remember anyone saying McCoy would have a better rookie year than Suh, but maybe some people thought that. I am not sure why they would have thought that, but whatever you say T 2.2. You know those draft junkies are one hell of a source. You and I are as much an expert as they are, they just decided to start their own site and we come and visit at Joe’s site.

  53. OAR Says:

You guys are Thomas 2.2-suckered, AGAIN! How many more times? That will be up to you guys.

  54. McBuc Says:

OAR…You are right! I even said the other day I would no longer engage him. Damn! OK, I am done with him.

  55. OAR Says:

    McBuc
It’s ok! Like Jack Sparrow says:
Worry about your own fortunes, gentlemen. The deepest circle of hell is reserved for betrayers and mutineers.

  56. McBuc Says:

    LOL, right on OAR.

  57. Kevin Says:

    @OAR –

I normally don’t post too much, but I do regularly read the comments. (I would estimate that I visit JBF about 15 times a day). I’ve seen all the spats that people get in with Thomas 2.2. He has, and states, his opinion and I choose to disagree. There’s no point trying to change his mind. But there’s something to be said when people confuse opinion with fact. He stated something as fact, but I couldn’t reproduce it. That’s when I called shenanigans. He did come up with a site, but when you google “biggest draft bust of 2010 NFL draft” that site doesn’t come up in the first 100 hits (10 pages). Thus, I would argue that you can’t “Just google biggest bust of 2010 draft and you will find numerous draft web publications concluding it was mccoy so far.” You can find them, but they are buried. I don’t think Canton has Suh’s number on speed dial any more than GMC can be classified as a bust. Most sports outlets are now rehashing the 2008 draft, a logical endeavor since 3 years of data can be examined.

And that’s all I have to say about that…

  58. Capt.Tim- The "self glossing" Says:

Oar- lol, yer right! Yer right!

Kevin- very much true, but proving him wrong doesn’t change or effect Thomas 2.2inches. He just greasily slides to the next lie. You should post more often!

  59. Espo Says:

Thomas, go to a game. If you zero in on him you’d know. He is no bust. Not yet anyways, and I don’t think he will be.

  60. BigMacAttack Says:

All I can say is LOL!!! You guys are all a riot. Good Stuff all the way around. Busy day for me, but I’m back in the Bar doing 12 oz curls to make sure my arms don’t get as small as Ruud’s. I can’t wait for the season to start, but you guys are definitely entertaining, so I toast to you all. Prost!

  61. BigMacAttack Says:

Yeah, you too Thomas. Can I call you Gilligan instead?

  62. Dave Says:

Great to hear McCoy is trying to get guys on the D to workout together.

Also, I think Bowers is going to have a GREAT career… even if it is cut short, but short migh be 5-8 years at a high level.

  63. Achetti813 Says:

Improved the Run defense from the previous year and improved the offense under Raheem from year 1 to 2 and Bucs fans now have a new buy in to the team. Buc football is back Thomas get off the ship now and walk the plank your a bad fan and if i was a Buc i wouldnt want you to cheer for me.

  64. Capt.Tim Says:

    Thomas 2.2″ = Gilligan
    Lol, that works!
