Disappointed In Gerald McCoy

November 11th, 2010

gerald mccoy 092110Joe has gone on record several times that Bucs third overall draft pick Gerald McCoy cannot be expected to do much at defensive tackle in 2010 because, well, he’s a rookie, and that he’s getting absolutely no help.

Anwar Richardson of the Tampa Tribune isn’t exactly buying that line of thinking. In this edition of a TBO Bucs vlog, Richardson details his thoughts on GMC’s rookie year. Please let Joe know what you think of Richardson’s views.

My opinion: He talks out of his a$$. It’s just too early in GMC’s career for him to be king of sacks. Suh has a decent D-line helping him, GMC doesnt. Anwar thinks thats an excuse and not a reason. He is mistaken. Give GMC a little more time and lets see what happens.

  2. bucfanjeff Says:

Anwar is off base. Roy, actually, is correct. While the HOPE is that McCoy does more, he’s a 1st year guy with NO help around him. Anwar’s assessment that the Lions are not a dynasty offers no support to the Suh comparison that the Lions have more talent around Suh – which they do. Anwar was right about one thing, the Panthers are a horrible team and I hope we are not overlooking them – that gets you a loss in the NFL.

  3. DieHard Bob Says:

I’m not going to waste my time listening to Anwar because he is beating a dead horse AGAIN. You are right Joe, just like it was said before training camp started, it should take a couple seasons before we see what GMC can be in the NFL. Let him learn the position, mature, and get some help around him (which is definitely NOT happening this season) and we can revisit this subject then.

I check Anwar’s pick in the paper every Sunday and he finally picked one right with the Falcons game.Thats one correct pick thru eight games.Oh yeah Anwar,I really value your opinion.

  5. D-Rome Says:

It’s too early. We’ll know for sure by the end of next season (if there is one).

  6. thomas Says:

Absolutely right Anwar! Just focus on McCoy as some have done, except for two or three plays per game he gets destroyed!

GMC has really shown me how big of a step it is from the Big 12 to NFL.

Why don’t the Tampa Bay newspapers try to hire pro football writers instead of giving us these high school sports guys trying to cover pro sports. Anwar is pathetic. I have never read anything that he has written or said that makes a lot of sense.

  8. C Cal Says:

Anwar dresses like he is in middle school.

Anwar is the biggest D!&k head in tampa period. This dude looks and sounds like a complete idiot. Joe i know you have job to do in posting material for ur site… but do us all a favor and the next time Anwar has something to say take the time you were gonna take to post the article and have a Big huge Caybrew or other adult beverage on me.

  10. JDouble Says:

    Anwar is correct.

It may not be fait to compare McCoy to Suh, or expect him to have a bunch of sacks, but it is fair to expect him to atleast TOUCH the QB or cause some sort of pressure. Entire games go by with McCoy being completely invisible. Rookie or not, that is not acceptable for the 3rd overall pick in the draft.

  11. lakelan bob Says:

Thomas-Suh is from the Big 12.

You may notice there are a couple of local writers Joe rarely if ever links to there, um, stuff.

That’s because after trying to read their tripe, Joe has to choke down a few beers as you eluded to.

The last time I checked, there are 11 players on the defensive side of the ball. If I were to attack the defensive line I’d focus on McCoy and White. Most times I’ve seen McCoy double teamed. It’s hard to develop techniques that are effective when you are double teamed. Where are the other lineman while McCoy is occupying two and sometimes 3 OL’s? Missing their ques and not putting forth the necessary effort would be my guess!

  14. BamBamBuc Says:

Michael Bennett has actually played pretty well. He really works hard getting to the backfield and has both inside and outside moves as well as a bull rush. Unfortunately, he doesn’t see the field enough. Just watch last week’s game again and tell me you don’t see 71 in there an awful lot. He also dropped back in zone coverage on a zone blitz and hustled 30-40 yards downfield on a pass to White. Keep an eye on 71, he’s playing better than anyone ahead of him on the depth chart.

  15. Matt Says:

I think GMC has been our best defensive lineman this year. But no, that’s not saying a whole hell of a lot.

Sapp didn’t take over the world in his rookie year.

Also, a few things about Suh:
    1) He has MUCH better teammates around him
    2) His coaches are simplifying things better for him
    3) Yes, he has made a lot more splash plays, but he probably he also had more bad plays where he was out of position. He isn’t dominating as much as the media is suggesting. Very inconsistent.

  16. Chet Says:

It’s way to early to call GMC a bust, but it would be interesting to see what would happen if they left him at the 3 technique and stopped being so cute with moving him around.

  17. Capt.Tim Says:

Anwar is a tool. I asked this already, but what the hell! What exactly were you guys expecting this line to do? Your only real veterans are Stylez White (1/2 time player) and Ryan Sims( shouldn’t really be on any team). Moore, Bennett, and Crowder are really first year players at best. McCoy, Price, and Woods are Rookies. Did anyone expect anything else , really? Raheem inherited a D-Line with no Talent. The only way to get better is to let the young guys play. Coach Morris said in the preseason that we would struggle Vs the run. And we would need time to improve. It’s taking time. I expect we will draft and sign FAs to improve. But this result is neither unexpected or unforetold. So quite yer bitching and get on with life!

  18. architek79 Says:

    Capt. Tim,
People here have the right to voice their frustration on any topic as they spend their time and money on this franchise also. Anwar, in my opinion, has a point in that McCoy must produce, PERIOD. At the in the of the day thats what it is about and the numbers say thats not happening. That doesn’t mean that he is not getting better, so you take your own meds and back off of the bloggers who want more from someone who is suppose to change the culture defensively.
