Raheem Advised To Be A “Master At Personnel”

November 10th, 2010
Let me tell you, Rah, you wanna be @#$n head coach in this league, you better @#$%n know everything about every @#$%n player wearing a helmet in this @#$%n country and Canada. You get what Im sayin? You gotta be a @#$%n one-man freakin genius like me.

"Let me tell you, Rah, you wanna be @#$'n successful head coach in this league, you better @#$%'n know everything about every @#$%'n player wearing a helmet in this @#$%'n country and Canada. You get what I'm sayin'? You gotta be a @#$%'n one-man freakin' genius like me."

Raheem Morris invoked the name of his great mentor Chucky today in a chat with the Carolina media.

And for those who don’t think Chucky was the driving force in Bucs personnel issues, Raheem might change your mind with his comments.

It seems the prized ripening fruit from Chucky’s coaching tree credits his noble mentor for advising him to know everything about everyone in order to get an edge on his peers.

Raheem was asked how he might prepare to face Carolina rookie QB Tony Pike, who will be the Panthers’ backup on Sunday. Raheem scoffed at the notion he’d have someone dig up college film on Pike.

Panthers reporter: How do you prepare for a guy like Tony Pike? Do you just base it on last week’s film in the fourth quarter? Or would you have someone go back and look at his college tapes?

Raheem Morris: You don’t have to go back if you’ve done a good job in researching guys throughout the draft and being detailed in your assignments. …That’s the only way you get better. That’s the only way you’re able to go out every week and understand people and know who people are so that you can have a chance to compete and have a chance to know.

You know I was told a long time ago by Coach Gruden to be a student of this league and understand all the players and know them all, pride yourself at being a master at personnel in this league. And that’s what I try to do by trying to go back and study film and draft evaluations and everything that we do.

It’s not the first time Raheem has referenced his many years being as involved as he could be in the draft and evaluation of players. It’s just the first time he explained that Chucky was his guiding light.

Yeah, like knowing that you shouldn’t have Bruce Gradkowski, a 6th round pick from Toledo, throw 52 times in 35mph winds at the Meadowlands.

/personnel Jon “I love this guyyyyy” Gruden

  2. Architek79 Says:

Personnel and the Chuckster don’t mix! Definitely not accurate. Raheem do yourself a favor and stay away from the Gruden affiliation statements, how can I say that he made more excuses for everything than anyone I have known.

  3. Buc You Says:

    Chucky was a mean dude.

Too bad he never played pro football, othewise he would be more respected.

Which also means, since he never played pro football, he really should be more tame imo. You shouldn’t go around trying to intimidate people when you never actually pkayed the game at that level with those big men.

He will need to throttle back on the a$$hole persona and re-focus on just the game planing itself. He will need to be more player friendly when he gets back into the league, so he doesn’t lose the locker room aagain when times are tough.

Football players this day and age are million dollar thugs who are generally ignorant, spoiled pr!cks who have been pampered all their teenage to adult lives. It’s so easy to draft a bust with that type of self righteous attitude running amock in the player population.

Gruden should take a page from Raheem’s book and start implementing the chest bump… even if the team only stops the opposing team on a handful of 3rd downs.

These spoiled, million dollar babies barely can be coached… in fact, most of them can’t be coached.

  4. FIRE GREG OLSON! Says:

    Buc You,

You are completely ignorant. Quit taking your little man complex out on guys that have achieved their dreams. You wouldn’t last one week of working as hard these guys do.

  5. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Wow, Buc You, you just insulted a bunch of NFL players, ones that you don’t even know. I’d love to know the basis for your argument. So they are thugs, yet they’ve been pampered their whole lives??? For every 1 “Thug” NFL player, I can name 10 that do more for their family and community than you or I would ever dream. That was a pretty moronic post, even for you.

  6. BamBamBuc Says:

Off topic, but Todd Wash is an idiot. Rick Stroud has an article out now about moving McCoy around to different spots on the D-line again and maybe rushing LBs (Watson and Black) which implies more 3-3-5. Here’s a quote:

“McCoy has drawn the biggest percentage of double teams among the defensive front four this season. So Wash said the Bucs will try to move him around more in rush packages.”

  7. BigMacAttack Says:

I really thought Jerry Jones would have hired Chucky by now. Todd Wash must have some good dirt on Raheem. Pictures or relation, something, I don’t know but he is dragging Raheem down, just like Bates was and making him and the organization look bad. This is about the time last season when Bates’ ice got very thin. Todd Wash is on cracked ice and his should be breaking any day now. Again, I’m just surprised it hasn’t happened yet. Wash must be good at something, but d line coach isn’t it.

  8. Capt.Tim Says:

Juuuust curious. With McCoy,Price, and woods being Rookies. And Moore, Bennett, and Crowder all being basically 1st year players, and Your only real Vets being the underachieving Ryan Sims, plus the on again, off again Stylez White. Exactly what were you guys expecting Todd Wash to achieve with this line? We all knew the we had NOTHING last year. We had to rebuild from complete scratch. We all know the rookies are at least a season away from being really sucessful. Ourc1st year guys are still learning also. I don’t know how much Rod Marinelli could have achieved this year. We all had already figured that out during the preseason! Next year we draft DEs , and sign some De And LB in free agency, to provide leadership. The DLine was one thing that was not gonna get fixed in a year.we fixed QB, RB, Wr, and meybe O-Line so far. I trust Raheem and Dominick to finish the Defensive rebuild this summer. The amazing thing is that we are half done, and already winning!

  9. Gary Says:

Your right Capt, but the one thing this young line has is youth and young legs. They should be making plays based on effort and hustle since they dont have experience yet. Add to that the bad coaching that Steve White points out with repeating the same mistakes, Wash isnt getting it done.

I guess its a little harsh to blame it on him with what he has to work with, but still he should be doing a better job.

On Chucky: Rah should stop mentioning his name period. Chucky will prove he sucks when he coaches the cowgirls with all that talent and still throws 5 yd. outs when they need 10 for a first down.

  10. oar Says:

    FGO,
Do you mean the Giants game Bruce threw for 48 times not 52? You mean that Giants game where we had 40 yrds rushing and 14 of those came from Bruce? Do you mean the same game that we had 6 fumbles in? The same Giants game we down 14-3 at half? Just wondering?

  11. oar Says:

    FGO,
BTW it was also 26 mph winds not 36. Lets not exagerate too much.

  12. McBuc Says:

He is not talking about drafting and free agents, he is talking about knowing all the players of the other teams. Gruden can break down tape with the best of them. Of course Morris learned a few things from Gruden.

  13. Dave Says:

Like Gruden or not (which I did but then thought it was time for a change with his refusal to develop young talent, especially at QB), you have to admit the guy studies football. He works 20 hours a day and it is obvious in his MNF broadcast and what that crew has said about his work ethic.

  14. sunrisejeff Says:

Gruden was a great x’s and o’s guy imo but lacked the people skills to work with players. Hopefully the guy has adapted his style a little in his off time because I really do wish him the best. Like him or not I’ll always respect him for allowing me to witness my fav team bringing home the trophy.

  15. oar Says:

    McBuc and Dave,
Exactly! I thinks it’s funny how Raheem gives some props/love to an ex-boss and all some can do is bitch and complain about a game 4 years ago!

  16. Pete Dutcher Says:

I could have sworn Gruden played QB…hmmmn.

    @Fire Greg Olson
Bruce Gradkowski may have sucked here, but he seems to be doing okay elsewhere. He’s not a starting quality guy, but he might be a decent backup. Some QBs make careers out of being backups.

As far as Raheem giving credit to Gruden…I have worked for some totally rude people…mean people. But in every situation, I learned something good from the experience. Adversity is the mother of all teachers.

Raheem spent years around Gruden…he clearly had to learn something good from him…as with every other coach he’s worked with.

  17. Fire Greg Olson! Says:

    Oar,

You see things much clearly at home on your couch. Bravo.

Ok, so the decision was to have a 6th round rookie throw 48 times in 26 mph winds.

If Gruden was so good at “knowing personnel”, then how come his offense never clicked and scored any points like it did in Oakland?

and as for “You can tell how good Chucky is from MNF”? LOL You’re kidding, right? Sitting in the booth saying how much you love every player is now considered evidence of being a personnel guru?

You guys probably drool over that “Gruden’s QB” show, don’t you? Well if he’s so good at nurturing young QB’s then how come he never did that in Tampa, instead of collecting washed up QB’s?

    McBuc says:
He is not talking about drafting and free agents, he is talking about knowing all the players of the other teams.
    ————————–

So he knows the opposition players better than he knows players that he intends on acquiring? LOL. Wow, that’s pretty dumb. Personnel knowledge is personnel knowledge.

  18. oar Says:

    FGO,
Oh, all hail the great and mighty FGO! Don’t question him, ever! He goes to the games, so he MUST KNOW more than all us! GIVE ME A BREAK!
“If Gruden was so good at “knowing personnel”, then how come his offense never clicked and scored any points like it did in Oakland?” Better question is, Do you really think he had the same caliber of talent here?
BTW ‘and as for “You can tell how good Chucky is from MNF”?’ Wasn’t me that said that. I know you have a hard time, but get your facts straight would you?
Look I know you dont like the man, but he is gone whats with all the hate still? Like I SAID “I thinks it’s funny how Raheem gives some props/love to an ex-boss and all you do is bitch and complain about a game 4 years ago! He’s gone, give it up, man!
Since that game is still under your skin, what would you have done? 40 yds rushing(13 from QB) and being down 2 scores at half?

  19. mike56wesley Says:

GRUDEN WAS A HELL OF A COACH -BRUCE ALLEN SUCKS-BUILDING ANOTHER SENIOR CITIZENS HOME IN WASHINGTON,OAKLAND JUST RECOVERED,LUCKLY DOMINIC LEARNED THE RIGHT WAY FROM MCKAY AND WHAT NOT TODAY FROM ALLEN,AND WE REBOUNDED QUICKLY

  20. oar Says:

    FOG,
Better question again, what QB should Gruden have drafted? What without (2) 1st rnd picks or (2) 2nd rnd picks, let me know?

  21. mike56wesley Says:

OAR,I REALLY DONT THINK HE DID THE DRAFTING BECAUSE IM SURE HE WOULD HAVE SAW ARRON RODGERS INSTEAD OF CADDILAC,BUT WHO AM I KIDDING,HE COULD FIND OR DEVELOPE TALENT,ONLY A GOOD COACH

  22. Fire Greg Olson! Says:

Attention everyone: There were NO FRANCHISE QB’s drafted in the NFL during Gruden/Allen’s reign
    -OAR

  23. oar Says:

    FOG,
Cool, way to be an ASS! Really, did I say there wasn’t any drafted franchise QBs then, really?
I see you are avoiding the question without an answer. Didn’t think you had one anyway! Excepting for A Rodgers, when we needed a RB instead, who would we have drafted? Again I’ll try and get one out of you, without the assine comments or your words in my posts.

  24. Fire Greg Olson! Says:

    Oar,

    You are a complete idiot.

“what QB should Gruden have drafted? What without (2) 1st rnd picks or (2) 2nd rnd picks, let me know?” – OAR

Gruden was here from 02-08. Did we trade EVERY 1st and 2nd rd pick between 02 and 08? I seem to remember two top 5 draft picks in there somewhere (Carnell and Gaines).

    and

“Since that game is still under your skin, what would you have done? 40 yds rushing(13 from QB) and being down 2 scores at half?” – OAR

I would’ve started Tim Rattay, a guy who had a couple 400 yard passing games for the Niners during the prior season. Rattay came in during that season, for the Bucs, against Chicago and almost won the game, but Gruden was out to prove that he could turn Gradkowski into a starter. Plus, why don’t you look up how many times Gradkowski ran the ball for those 13 yards. I’ll bet you it was 4 rushes, which would equal 52 PASS PLAYS CALLED!!!! LOL.

I don’t hate Gruden. I think he’s very ENTERTAINING in the MNF booth. I have always gotten his back whenever the proverbial “He won it with Dungy’s team” bullsh*t argument comes up. I think he was exactly what we needed to win a Super Bowl. However, the systematic destruction of our team can also be attributed to Chucky and Allen. Just callin’ it like I see it.

  25. Fire Greg Olson! Says:

    OAR,

The fact that Gruden didn’t attempt to cultivate a franchise QB is one of the reasons that he isn’t the HC in Tampa anymore. Joe and many others have stated this for years. The question isn’t “Who?” he should’ve drafted but “Why didn’t he ever try?”.

  26. oar Says:

    FOG,
You call me an idiot for this:
“what QB should Gruden have drafted? What without (2) 1st rnd picks or (2) 2nd rnd picks, let me know?” – OAR

    but then you claim this:
Gruden was here from 02-08. Did we trade EVERY 1st and 2nd rd pick between 02 and 08? I seem to remember two top 5 draft picks in there somewhere (Carnell and Gaines).

Re-read my statement I SAY TWO 1st’s and TWO 2nd’s. That doesn’t say those were picks in every year he was here, DOES IT!!!??? Four 1st and 2nd rnd picks out of those years. But, I’m the idiot??????? Whatever!!!! Again put those words in there for me.
Again, this was all about you getting a shot in at Gruden, cause Raheem happened to say something positive about him. But, you go to every game so he should listen to you instead of his old boss!
BTW still waiting on that QB we should have drafted, answer?
So you say start Rattay, cause he was more a experienced passer? So you still would have thrown in those winds to win that game? Hmmm? Interesting! THAT WAS MY POINT, NOT WHAT QB IT WAS! IDIOT!!!

  27. oar Says:

    FOG,
“The question isn’t “Who?” he should’ve drafted but “Why didn’t he ever try?”.”
Still, no anwser! Didn’t expect anything less!
Don’t bitch about it, if you can’t answer. Hell, even if it’s a wrong answer at least try.

  28. Fire Greg Olson! Says:

    Like Ive said before OAR,

Believe me, you wont miss me…

  29. oar Says:

    FOG,
Wow, you’ve got 1″ and 25lbs on me, but I’ve got my hair!
“Come have a beer on me and we’ll have this discussion like men.”
Like men? Not sure how it would be any different of a dicussion? You call me a complete idiot and then I did the same inreturn and would do the same in person.
Don’t be surprised if I do go soon and take you up on that beer though.

  30. oar Says:

Love how you threw Aythentic in there. Needed another pat I guess?

  31. oar Says:

  32. Fire Greg Olson! Says:

    LOL. True

Come by, I’m sure we could have a beer and have a respectful discussion of Bucs football.

    You’re a good sport, Oar.
