“This Is More Of A Mirage”

October 15th, 2010

Rick Stroud called the Bucs a house of cards back in May. And now he likens their 3-1 record to a mirage.

Rick Stroud of the St. Pete Times just can’t believe what he’s seeing from these Buccaneers.

Stroud thinks their 3-1 record is largely an illusion because statistically the Bucs are so poor that the wins don’t add up, so Stroud told J.P. Peterson on 1010 AM this afternoon. (Yes, that’s the same Peterson who is shunned by the Rays).

Stroud bellowed on about how the Bucs have a poor pass rush, can’t stop the run, have a poor running game, etc, while explaining why the Ws don’t add up.

“Everything I know about the game tells me this is more of a mirage,” Stroud said.

The St. Pete Times beat writer went on to say the Bucs are surviving on winning the turnover battles with nine interceptions and protecting the ball.

But then Stroud tossed an ice cold bag of cold water on those nine interceptions, “some of them, let’s face it, they’re sort of the jump-the-route variety,” he said. “And they did it with Josh Freeman making some unbelievable throws and Micheal Spurlock and Mike Williams coming up with unworldly catches.”

Uhh, that’s football, Rick. You make plays and you win. And since when does jumping a route devalue an interception? This is news to Joe.

Initially, Joe was surprised by Stroud being so negative. But Stroud is the same guy who called the Bucs a house of cards during a TV interview before the season started. So maybe it all makes sense.

Stroud sounds like a bitter ex girlfriend who is mad the other has moved on to bigger and better things. Or maybe he got snubbed when asking for an autograph. This sentence alone tells me he is an idiot…

“some of them, let’s face it, they’re sort of the jump-the-route variety,”

First of all, that is the best kind of interception. It means you either baited the QB into making a mistake, or you knew the play and out hustled the receiver. Ronde Barber has arguably made a hall of fame career with “jumping the route” interceptions. Maybe this tool prefers interceptions off of tipped passes. Why is he covering the Bucs? It’s obvious he is harboring sone harsh feelings.

When will writers finally realize the throws being made by Freeman are not “lucky” or “some act of god”. I know this team has really had some poor QBs in its history, but we are watching a young QB continue to grow into a franchise QB. When a team has a franchise QB, a team has a chance to win every week no matter what other areas of the team may be questionable.

Did Yasinkas (probably didn’t spell the name , but who gives a crap) and Stroud go to the same school for journalism?

  3. BigMacAttack Says:

Stroud is right. The Browns, Panthers and Bengals all felt sorry for the young Bucs and just gave them the wins. This is a new kinder gentler NFL and it is more about love, peace and understanding. It’s about helping young players who are trying their hardest and rewarding them by giving them wins. The problem is that the Steelers didn’t get the memo. Drew Brees has a big heart and will stay home Sunday to give the Bucs the edge and donate yet another win to them.

    Stroud = Buffoon
    Cummings= Likeable buffoon
    Thank goodness for Joe.

Protecting the ball, winning the turnover battle, the QB/WRs making plays. Sounds good to me! Maybe those things trump run & stop the run? Gosh, what is this team going to be like when they can also do the latter?

As opposed to the more challenging errant throw directly to the defense??

Rick Stroud = zero lifetime snaps

3-1…That’s 3 victories, and one loss! That is the same record as the New England Patriots! I listened to Cody Grim tonight on 620…they are a YOUNG team that is learning from day to day, but they are also a cohesive unit that has mutual respect not only for each other, but for their coaching staff! This team will continue to impress and get better with time!

LOL. I agree. What kind of a comment is that Stroud?

  10. Ash Says:

Hey other Ash, Ive been using this sign on for a while on these comments. Can you change yours please? Thanks

Someone tell Stroud that an illusion is what Cody Grimm showed Palmer.

Now you see the ball, now you don;t.

Yes the Buc’s are young and by the end of the season we may see some ugly games. That is what happens when you build through youth. In 5 years will be saying, I never figured they would be this good.

  12. Fish Says:

Last time I checked, jumping the route is the talented way a DB gets a pick. Nice synopsis, Rick.

I think the bucs might be just a tad over their heads, but it’s not all BS. We’re showing glimpses of our potential and it will become more consistent as our team matures and develops. We’ve gotten a little lucky with the schedule, but that’s part of the game, isn’t it?

I just have a feeling I’m going to be really annoyed with all of the haters who finally speak up after the bucs eventually lose a few.

I know, because we all know they will be back. I do have to admit though, the site is a little more boring without their “hating” on the team. Then again, I’ll take more boring if it means we’ll keep on winning!

  14. BigMacAttack Says:

2 Ashes and no smoke. I think there are 2 or 3 Erics as well. 2 Petes. It does get confusing. I didn’t think Ash was that common of a name. When we end up with 2 JimBucs we’re in trouble.

One of my favorites had to be “Radio Mushmouth is a Pedophile”, followed by “Radio Mushmouth is a Pedophile is a Pedophile”. I truly like the “Fire Greg Olson” name and Greg is doing better this season, but it’s still early. Many of the names are easliy recognized from other sites. Some of these @$$holes are legendary and some should just use the screen name “Hater #1, 2 etc.”

With that said, “The Saints are freakin going going down tomorrow”. Whodat gonna beat dem Saints? Da Bucs are gonna crucify dem Saints. Josh Freeman is the $h!t., just no other way to put it. We need a good loud crowd tomorrow and Breesie’s mind will be at home with wifee-poo and the babytobe. This is a respect game. The Bucs need to DIS the Saints the same as they did Carolgina. Our defense needs to really get after it and the line has a lot to prove. I think they will tomorrow and the Saints will leave more battered and bruised than they got here. Send them packin, limpin and a scratchin. Eff the Saints. I hate the Saints. Beat, batter and destroy the Saints. Turn their hangover into a gangbangover.

I keep waiting for some writer to show some damn sense, but again, I am disappointed. To a point, he is right about the”house of cards”. The difference is COACHING!! Raheem is tricking them into playing against our Strenghts. He gives them the run, but teams lack the patience and discipline to maintain 14 play drives, they self destruct! So they end up passing into an 7 man pass coverage- turnover. It’s been really fun watching how effectively he’s manipulated teams into the jaws of our D!! On offense, teams take away our Run, but our passing game is possibly more explosive now anyway. We act like we are desperate to run, but really I think it’s another sucker play- so that the passing game will still be available in the 4th quarter. This team has some great strenghts, and some definite weaknesses . Raheem has been like a great general, directing the opposition where WE want them! Just plain, good all fashioned coaching is the biggest deference this year!

  16. Capt.Tim Says:

Oh, I forgot! Rick Stroud- if you really studied the games you are payed to report on- even a little! – some of this would just HAVE TO BE OBVIOUS!! I am just left speechless by how little reporters research or know about the sports that are their livelihood! Has the whole industry become absolutely devoid of accountability, research, knowledge, facts, or basic understanding of the most fundamental of strategies??? How did this happen? How is it that radio sport reporters are constantly questioning the coaches, when even the most uneducated fan can see they have NO IDEA what they are talking about? It just amazes me!!

  17. Sgt Mike Says:

Just goes to show that just like I said in the poll about confidence in Raheem. I think he has the defense playing a year better than they are because he is just that, a good Monte Kiffin molded defensive coordinator. I hope they prove me wrong that they are a better team especially on offense but I’m not jumping on the bandwagon that has Raheem as coach of the year just yet. Go Bucs!!!
