Cosell Frowning On Winston

March 5th, 2015
greg cosell 0305

NFL Films analyst Greg Cosell, left, with Jameis Winston’s personal quarterback coach, dapper George Whitefield, at last month’s NFL Scouting Combine. Cosell is beginning to sour on Winston.

Maybe the NFL Films analyst and senior producer, the well-respected Greg Cosell, is studying too much film.

Maybe he is overthinking? He admits he is beginning to frown on prospective Bucs quarterback Jameis Winston.

In a podcast with NBC Sports personality and SiriusXM NFL Radio host Ross Tucker, Cosell said he beginning to slowly lose his charm for Winston, documents Evan Silva of Rotoworld.com.

“The more I watched him, the less I liked him,” Cosell said. “Winston was not a very good decision maker within the context of his offense. And the other thing is, his accuracy is very erratic.” Cosell noted a “loop” in Winston’s throwing motion that too often caused Winston to miss high of his intended targets. “My guess is that’s the way he throws,” Cosell opined. “I’m not sure you can change that.”

This is odd. If he was inaccurate, how did Winston finish with a 65 percent completion percentage (which, for reference sake, was better than Matt Ryan’s at Boston College)?

At the NFL Scouting Combine, no one questioned Winston’s throwing ability and he was roundly lauded for his football IQ.

Joe respects Cosell a helluva lot. Maybe Jason McIntyre of TheBigLead.com was right? Maybe this is the beginning of the blowback.

this is part of the ESPN\NFL script to sustain interest\debate until draft day. i remember the same trend with suh\mccoy. they love to manufacture a rivalry, and as soon as one guy gets too far ahead of the other they start pulling out the negative analysis. first MM was sculpted by the football gods themselves and put on this earth to be picked #1 overall while JW’s character takes a beating. then they praise JW to the moon and relentless chatter is aired about MM’s NFL readiness. next thing you know, JW visits One Buc and becomes the undeniable frontrunner, so it’s time for your big guns (tape gurus Jaws and Cosell) to share critiques of JW’s mechanics. once MM starts to pull ahead we will hear analysts throw more red flags out. All of the good and bad things said are defensible, so i’m not saying they are trotting out lies about either guy. just that the media, to keep draft day in the news, is orchestrating the coverage with the timing of the analysis and the shifting opinions to stoke public debate and ring up those viewers and web hits

Ill still take him with his flaws and all over the Mr Project Mariota any day, everyday and twice on Sundays.

Can we please stop trying to relate back to matt ryan’s last year at boston college? he wasn’t playing with any nfl receivers and running backs.

  8. passthebuc Says:

Joe: you want a top QB so bad that I think you overlook flaws. There just are not that many QB saviors that enter the draft. If TB thinks they can produce the Leader just through the draft, they are daft.

To take either one of the choice QB’s in this draft, and proclaim him your starting QB, disaster awaits. However, thats wheat lovie will do.

  9. pick6 Says:

philip rivers has a funky throwing motion. also, did you see him lose his temper during the game that time his team wasn’t playing well (which time, you ask? every time.)? selfish guy. no poise. i don’t think he’s cut out to be a QB in the NFL.

  10. Josh P Says:

    @pick6

You mean these analyst are agenda drive. Say it ain’t so.

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

These anylists are human….they all say they aren’t considering off-field…but I think perhaps even subconciously, they find ways to find faults with technique etc.
This may be why experts disagree.

Anyone who speaks in terms of certainty “slam-dunk” for one QB or the other…..I believe their opinion is suspect.

I look for consensus….and the consensus seems to be that these two QBs are far ahead of all of the others….and both have francise potential. There also seems to be consensus that the Bucs need and will draft one of them. But even that isn’t a certainty.

Only a fool believes he can predict the future with absolute certainty. I’m not calling 87 a fool…..just saying his wishful thinking has taken over.

  12. gotbbucs Says:

I guess the question then becomes do you go with the gun slinger, Winston, who is going to get you in trouble once in a while and wow you most of the time, or the best pass rusher in the class. I don’t have much interest in taking Mariota at #1.

  13. Drew Says:

@Joe… I don’t believe he was questioning the accuracy per se, but more in line with the high over throws (inaccuracy) attributing to interceptions.

  14. lurker Says:

    why a rap career, robert?

  15. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Stop posting so much common sense TBBF. Although I suspect even 87 admits he’s been posting some foolish stuff.

that or be an analyst, but he does not have the experience

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ St. Pete

Here is some more common sense….or my “wishful thinking”

I believe as we get closer to the draft…..both QBs will be elevated to the status of worthy #1 pick of the Bucs…..and that, after the selection is made…whenever that is….Buc fans will move on and be happy that we have a potential QB for many years to come.

  30. Riga Says:

Please please please stop this. You guys constantly make excuses for reasons why analysts, scouts, coaches etc. have a negative opinion on Winston. Yet, anyone who likes him you are all over.

I come to this site multiple times a day for your objectivity and I think you guys do a hell of a job. This Jameis stuff is getting out of hand. Sorry but these articles are starting to become very frustrating to read. Maybe Cosell, Jaws, Polian, Dungy are actually accurate in their assessments. Stop trying to dig for reasons they might be wrong. I’m sure it works both ways with the guys who love Jameis. They’ve been wrong before too.

I by no means favor one or the other. I want the bucs to finally have a good quarterback and I want to read actual information about them. Not articles attached with incredibly biased opinions.

  31. Zam Says:

Cosell had only watched 2 of Winston’s games before, now he’s seen it all. Makes sense to me.

I thought Mariota threw better in the combine, to be honest.

WIth Jaws and Cosell negative on him, the Bucs better really do their homework on this arrogant ahnuss.

  32. Senor Mofo Says:

Any good gambler, when given the option of two wagers with equal risk, will take the safest option, especially if that option presents a higher expected return.

Mariota is the safer pick, and his skill set as a passer and overall athleticism promise a higher long-term return than Winston.

Make the smart bet, Glazers. Just make the smart bet.

  33. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @WS99

Don’t mention Bryce Petty….the trade down crew’s go-to QB……their dream would be to trade down….pick Petty….probably a reach late in the first round….very top of 2nd….and have him compete with Glennon.

I always liked Petty and he could end up being better….only time will tell and we don’t have the time….we need to pull the trigger on one of these QBs now!!!

  34. LUVMYBUCS Says:

That so called “Loop” in his arm mechanics is a reason why– you have to be concerned about this kid– being a future Tommy John candidate.

  40. Jeagan1999 Says:

As we get closer to the Draft, more and more questions will arise. Mechanics, decision making, character, past behavior, physical fitness, etc… The question then becomes “If I’m Lovie Smith/Jason Licht/Dirk Koetter/The Glazer Family…am I willing to say that all those potential questions mean less than what I perceive his performance on the field will be?” In other words, is the juice worth the squeeze? There’s no doubt Winston has talent….but there have been a lot of guys who had talent that completely washed out of the NFL! I’m sure Lovie and Jason Licht have asked themselves this question already, and they’ll probably ask it many more times between now and the Draft….”Which guy am I willing to bet my job on?” I guess we will find out at the end of April what the answer to that question is.

    ================================================

No. Three number ones and Alonso sounds good, but Foles shouldn’t be part of the equation for us. If Philly can move Foles for a player we actually need, and package all that to us, and still leave us somehow in a position to at least still get Winston, then maybe.

But that’s a whole lot of wheeling and dealing and string-pulling involving multiple teams, and still leaves us holding an empty bag when we could just do the smart thing in the first place and draft Marcus Mariota.

I still remember Phil Simms saying Andrew Luck couldn’t hit 2-3 tight window throws that you need to in order to succeed in the NFL. Simms just didn’t see it in the tape and he ‘watched all of Luck’s throws from college multiple times”.

Cossell is trying so hard here to make something of nothing. I don’t need to be on ESPN radio to tell you Winston has a big league arm. Even on the safest prospect maybe ever (Luck) you had guys like Simms who didn’t like the tape.

  68. Dan Says:

Reminds me of donovan mcnab or tony romo… in that he will be good, talented, enough to lock up the position but with flaws enough (occassional wild innacuracies(donovan) or costly poor mistakes (romo))

    Couch Fan Says
“I’ll still take him with his flaws and all over the Mr Project Mariota ”

I hate to break the news to you, but Winston has the potential to be as big a project as Mariota…or any other player in the draft. We’ll see that when the Panthers defense is sacking him or causing him to fumble because he holds the ball too long…or picking him off because he stares down his targets.

  70. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

IF the Bucs take him, I mean.

  71. JBuc Says:

Maybe the Bucs are planting negatives about Jameis with the hopes they drive his draft value down. Then they pick Marcus and watch Jameis fall. Falls down the board all the way to guess who? Philly. We offer Marcus for a multitude of picks this year and next. They get their QB, we get ours and lots of picks and everyone’s a winner. And for you Jameis haters, he get paid a low 1st rounder instead of the #1 overall pick.

Just a though. I know not likely.

  72. Cody Says:

Mariota is the better athlete not doubt, but Winston is the most Pro-ready Quarter-Back in this Draft period…Back In 2013 (when FSU was really loaded) had it not been for a merciful Jimbo Fisher pulling Winston out of games every week after 2 quarters of play he very well could have thrown for 5000 yards and 50 TD’s easy…After he brought his team back from a 21-3 deficit to Win a National Championship I thought he was ready for the NFL then…

What amazes me even more about Winston’s up-side is that he’s never played football in the spring due to baseball so of course he’s gonna have some technical flaws…Yet look what he’s accomplished on the field playing football part-time…this will be literally his first football off-season..Now that he can channel everything into football the sky really is the limit for this kid…

  73. Senor Mofo Says:

Both of these QBs are heart-and-soul winners. Mariota may be more technically proficient, but Winston does have an innate command of the field that is hard to deny. Winston is gregarious, but comes off like a huckster. Mariota is more understated, and is admittedly media-shy.

Mariota brings skills to the table that Winston will simply never, ever have. But I’m convinced that if Winston can pull his act together emotionally, he will be a winner in the NFL.

Winston can be very, very good. But Mariota could be elite. Maybe one of the all-time greats. On the other hand, Carson Palmer and Chad Pennington are both technically proficient QBs, and how many Super Bowl rings do they have?

Personally, I would pick Mariota because his long-term upside is seemingly limitless. But I don’t own, manage, or coach the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

This is a very tough decision for the Bucs. Let’s hope they choose wisely, and that they are not in a position to make this type of choice again for the next 15 years.

  74. knuckledragger Says:

“Wake me up when Greg Cosell puts his stamp on one or the other. At that point I will pay attention.

So Jaws wouldn’t take him with the #1 pick, how about the #2 pick? I predict the world will end at some point but I don’t know why or when.”
    ……………
This is what someone posted this morning. Funny timing huh.

Where are all the stories about teams trying to trade up for Winston?

  76. lurker Says:

“Then they pick Marcus and watch Jameis fall. Falls down the board all the way to guess who? Philly.”

only problem with that is if the bucs take mariota, winston is gone to tennessee at #2. washington at #5 or the jets at #6 will be drooling for winston. winston will never drop out of the top 10.

  77. Arealbucsfan Says:

@jbuc. I wish that would happen! But its too ridiculous of a scenario. I think the Jets would still take him.

  78. JBuc Says:

Lurker, I guess my point is that as more negatives build up about Winston beyond the normal stuff we are hearing, there is less likelihood of a team taking a chance on him early in the draft. Remember Sapp?

It would be very risky for Washington and NY to take him. The wild card is Tennessee.

  79. Dave Pear Says:

    Ok

  80. cmurda Says:

Good point Cody. Jameis himself made this point more than once at the combine. basically telling teams:
“Look – if you like what you’ve seen of me so far – imagine what I can do when ALL my energy goes to football. Not half the year because of baseball season – not limited to 20 hours per week by NCAA rules – ALL of my 60-70 hours per week working time will be spent in pursuit of winning games and Championships for my team.”

  84. lurker Says:

    “Remember Sapp?”

everyone remembers sapp. teams take risks, calculated, and need to. both qb’s are a risk, and winston is less of one, but the bucs need one of those two with the #1.

  85. lurker Says:

also remember, dungy wanted sapp in minnesota despite the rumors on draft day. denny green went derrick alexander and the bucs ran to the podium.

  86. Bucnut2 Says:

  87. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Winston less of a risk???! Are you crazy????

Winston is strictly boom or bust. There is no middle ground with him.

Whichever team takes him is taking a huge risk that he can control himself. That he can develop into a good quarterback. That he can transition. That he can learn to think faster and not project his throws.

Mariota’s risk? Can he adapt to the NFL. Can he work under center. That’s it. Winston has more risk than Mariota.

  88. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

Bonzai…I think they are both a risk, but Mariota is more of a risk than Winston…

winston has done it. his skills are better than mariota and transfer better to the pro’s. mariota gets hurt too much and will continue to get hurt if they try that gimmick offense. mariota fumbles too much and gets sacked way too much. so much for his “athleticism”. winston stands tall and makes the pass while getting hit or with men in his face.

  92. bucs4lyfe Says:

With all his flaws he’d win more games in his rookie year than Glennon has his entire career even if he did start the season. I’m not even going to begin to discuss mariotta because no one else is except people who think chip Kelly is moving up to get him

Geez Pear let it go. I’ve been trying to not banter with any posters. I can’t believe the vicious attacks I’ve received just because of my dislike of an accused rapist/criminal. I think he’s guilty, you all don’t. Let it go.

However you did remind me of a dream vision I had. In this dream, a #5 FSU QB was on top of this drunk passed out young girl, tearing her clothes off. She was crying and begging him to stop. In a closet watching and wanking was a old school DT wearing an old school Buccaneers uniform, number 76. Then from Heaven Malcolm Glazer was descending, he was wearing a Super Bowl 37 ring. It was hugh and shone like the Sun. Half way down he stopped and pointed to a current Buccaneers QB wearing number 8. At this point the Glazer boys under stood what Pop Pop Glazer wanted and they bowed before him. As Malcolm ascended back towards Heaven he suddenly stopped turned and asked, “Why is Pear wacking off in the closet?” At this point Malcolm vanished.

that’s one thing that bothers me about Winston. he talks about him self a lot! there is being cocky & confident but there is also being arrogant.

  97. mikeh Says:

also you can bet everybody in the NFL is listening! jamies and there not scared.

  98. mikeh Says:

its kind of funny though! been a football fan since forever and never heard a player talk so much about himself before he is even drafted. he is painting a target on himself. the only other player close to him mouth wise is probably r.sherman. and he has earned it.

“winston has done it. his skills are better”

That’s funny, because Mariota’s stats are nearly all better than Winstons.

  101. Senor Mofo Says:

Yep, Mariota is the risky pick.

He’s probably just itching to shed his Eagle Scout image. As soon as he banks fat stacks of NFL money, they’ll probably arrest him for driving his new Hennessey Venom GT 180 MPH through a school zone, drunk, with a dead tranny hooker in the passenger seat, syringe still hanging out of his/her arm.

  102. lurker Says:

“That’s funny, because Mariota’s stats are nearly all better than Winstons.”

you mean except for wins/losses, national championship, avoiding injuries, and not getting sacked 7 times by a 3-7 team despite being “athletic”.

  103. Senor Mofo Says:

    @lurker

    A. J. McCarron won two national championships. Winston only won one. So, I guess McCarron is twice as good as Winston.

Winston missed more starts due to suspension than Mariota ever missed due to injury.

Dan Marino never won a Super Bowl. Trent Dilfer did. So, I guess Dilfer is better than Marino.

Aaron Rodgers gets sacked at a higher rate than Mariota. I guess Rodgers just can’t feel pressure, and sucks.

Kellen Moore is the winningest QB in NCAA history, but went undrafted, and has never been activated for a regular season NFL game.

You can cherry-pick superlatives about Winston or mediocrities about Mariota all you want. Mariota is still the more naturally skilled passer, better decision maker, better athlete, and better man.

  104. lurker Says:

and yet your opinion on mariota is wrong, silly mofo.

you say better athlete, and yet winston is better moving in the pocket. and winston is the more natural skilled passer, silly. experts say that and you could see it on display at the combine. and again your opinion on better decision maker or man. you have no idea what will happen in the future. “men of god” have cause more pain and suffering in this world than even corporations.

    ================================================

I have no idea where you are going with that in the context of a football discussion. I can only surmise that you are even drunker than I am right now.

I’m not anti-Winston, either. Far from it. I’m simply opposed to drafting Winston over Mariota.

I’ve gone back and watched both of these QBs, and my opinion is that Mariota has elite-level skills that can’t be coached and that will transfer to the NFL, while Winston has some fundamental flaws that can’t be fixed.

And my opinion is every bit as valid as yours.

    ================================================

I’m not suggesting that our opinions don’t matter. I’m only suggesting that they are equally valid.

We are both Buccaneers fans, and we both watch a lot of football. We both care about this draft choice. You and I are as qualified as any of the “experts” out there when it comes to expressing our opinion.

I’ve operated websites and blogs. I know that only a small percentage of the Joes’ readers will ever bother to comment. I could do a quick content analysis of the last hundred posts on this site, and then quite accurately calculate this blog’s unique visitor traffic based on the number of comments and active commenters.

It isn’t just those of us who comment that are reading each others’ comments. For every person that comments here, there are probably 92 other readers that read those comments, but who never join the conversation. I’m sure the Joes’ analytics would confirm this number as at least being pretty close to reality.

Are some of those anonymous readers people within the Buccaneers organization? You can bet your ass that they are.

It is our moral and ethical duty as Buccaneers fans to express our opinion. Will it in any way affect their ultimate decision? Maybe not. But we have a responsibility, as fans who support this team, to think about what we post.

  109. Josh P. Says:

Cosell on Ryan’s 19 INTs his final season at BC when going into the draft: “Has the willingness to pull the trigger, to make tight throws into small openings.”

So Winston throws 18 INTs and its because his mechanics are so bad, yet Ryan throws 19 INTs and he gets praised for “Willingness to pull the trigger and make throws in tight windows”

Winston has been doing this for 2 years now. Let them keep trying to keep this kid down.. All it does is fuel him to prove people wrong. As a Bucs fan it makes me want them to draft him even more.
