Did Lovie Tip His QB Hand?

March 4th, 2015

Mariota2A new interview with Lovie Smith appears to show the Bucs head coach has a preference when it comes to a potential No. 1 pick who plays quarterback.

Bucs beat reporter Jenna Laine, of SportsTalkFlorida.com, had a long 1-on-1 session with Lovie that included the following exchange:

Jenna Laine: You talked about off the field, but on the field, you see two different guys that operated in two very different systems. Jameis is a little more of a pro-style quarterback whereas Marcus [Mariota] is more athletic, a little bit different there. How do you decipher who would be a better fit for what you’re trying to do?

Lovie Smith: We have a lot of video, there’s a lot of history that we’ve had evaluating different quarterbacks in college and what they end up being in the pros, you fall back on that, but I think you do your research and watch as much video as you can to look at their game. And nowadays, with modern technology, you can break down everything about any player. In this case, when you’re talking about a quarterback, every throw, every interception, everything a guy can do, it’s in high-def, slow-motion. So anything you need to make a good evaluation you’re able to do. And if we’re just talking about the quarterback position, we have a lot of eyes that will see these players. Of course I will, Jason, I’m sure ownership will, the common fan will, and then our experts too – Dirk Koetter, our coordinator, Mike Bajakian, our quarterback coach, we’re going to put a lot of eyes on these guys before it’s all said and done.

What Joe’s keying in on here is Lovie’s admission that he’ll rely a lot on past evaluation of college QBs and how they performed in the NFL; “We have a lot of video, there’s a lot of history that we’ve had evaluating different quarterbacks in college and what they end up being in the pros, you fall back on that …”

There sure isn’t much history on guys like Mariota succeeding, especially succeeding quickly. Joe takes that as Lovie leaning Winston, who played in a pro-style offense.

It’s also interesting to Joe that Lovie mentioned ownership in an answer about football Xs and Os.

I read that the same way Joe but of course that point of view will be attacked. This has to be ad click gold for you though. I can’t wait for draft day. Crab legs from Publix and a browser ready to order Winston’s jersey come 8:16pm on April 30th.

Not quite, Luther. “Ad click gold” would be the Bucs winning games and being “relevant” as Lovie says. Nothing comes close to winning. –Joe

  5. Clint Says:

Good God, I am 100% behind the Bucs drafting Winston; I think it’s what they will do and what they should do. But to act like this quote sheds light one way or the other in any shape or form is really silly and borderline just grasping at total straws. I read it 4 or 5 times. It’s like waiting for a punchline in a joke that never comes. Oh, c’mon, Clint. You love every second of this. –Joe

I also don’t understand being so coy. They have absolutely zero leverage, yet they’re not really tipping their hand at all; it’s kind of stupid really and exhausting.

  6. The original "Kevin" Says:

Yeah grocery stores better be well stocked for crab legs on draft day…

  7. Howard Cosell Says:

I want to trade down or draft linemen.
However I took Joes sage advice and went to see a psychiatrist.
Sure enough he traced my fear of franchise QBs to traumatic
experiences when I was trying to pull in college exacerbated
    by the whole Freeman debacle.

    Thanks Joe.
With your tough love I think I can work towards a brighter futuer
where I accept Winston or Mariota.

  8. WhatTheBucIsWromgWithYou Says:

It’s pretty funny to hear our fans say we should trade down and get lineman or defensive players…like where do you think these players exist? The bust rate for the draft is ridiculously high in the overall spectrum so we’re just supposed to find “the” lineman or de/db/lb? When you miss the playoffs, what do you want? The number 1 pick in the draft!! These are two of the best qbs to come out of college in 20yrs! Andrew Luck is a one of a kind player. We don’t have a qb people! That’s the most important position last time I checked.

  9. Sapp, STFU Says:

People, please. How many first round draft picks become duds. . . Plenty. Trading down or selecting a lineman doesn’t guarantee you’ll get better players. Bust are everywhere.

But if you have the first overall, you take a chance on your franchise QB. You don’t give it up for other players that could be busts too.

  12. RickyBell Says:

Even more important is the fact that when Lovie wiped his rear-end yesterday he went front to back. This is a clear sign that he is leaning towards taking Winston #1.

  13. MTM Says:

I rolled out some chicken bones while performing a traditional vudu ritual and it spelled out the initials JW. So it a done deal. The Bucs are drafting Famous Jameis.

  14. The original "Kevin" Says:

Imagine the reaction throughout the city if the Bucs were to trade down. Holy crap it would be chaos. I am a believer in Mike Glennon but it would be foolish not to take the best qb when glennon is still a question mark and you own the number 1 pick. Also the thought of a shiny new first round qb would probably give the whole team a boost. No way it happens…

  15. SuperSam Says:

I actually found this quote to be a lot more interesting, Lovie is talking about Lavonte David, but look how much he cares about how the off the field stuff means to him. “It’s safe to say, we want Lavonte David to be a Tampa Bay Buccaneer for a long time. That’s easy to see, what he brings to the table. You get a chance to meet him, he’s definitely a guy that we want out there representing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, of course on the field, but off the field too. It doesn’t get much better than that.” This is a linebacker were talking about, not a quarterback, you know the face of our franchise…. hmmmmmmm Lovie sure sounds like he puts off the field behavior very close to on the field performance.

  16. RickyBell Says:

hahahaha MTM I beat you to it. And mine is funnier.

  17. MTM Says:

    @Rickybell

    You got me.

  18. WhatTheBucIsWrongWithYou Says:

A guy who faces constant pressure, criticism, and public scrutiny from fans should curl into the fetal position and call it a day forever. But Winston went through all of that and led the most dominant college team ever (based on margin of victory) to a championship. O btw he also led a young team to the first ever college playoff. That’s who I want on my team. Idc where he went to school, no one in college since luck has done it better.

  19. danati74 Says:

  20. SuperSam Says:

The great students from the school of Jimbo Fisher….Jamarcus Russell, Matt Flyn, EJ Manuel, Christian Ponder and Jameis Winston HAHAHAHAHA EPIC FAIL! Pass on Winston.

  21. J Says:

    Brady/Manning/Brees mostly run a spread.

A Rodgers played in a run option read system similar to Mariota.

Wilson played in pro styles at Wisconsin/NC State but his style in the pros reminds me a lot of Mariota.

I don’t think this is a sign one way or the other. If they were leaning, then why not have him signed already?

  22. HotRod Says:

@Supersam and everyone else who assumes Winston cannot possibly mature into a “that guy you want representing your team”

Why does no one think that 19/20 yr old kids can do a few boneheaded things and still turn out good. I remember college, we did stupid stuff. Lots of people do at that age, they still have the ability to become responsible human beings. He is extremely charismatic, can you imagine all the kids faces lighting up when he brings that smile and charm to All Childrens for a day?

  27. WhatTheBucIsWrongWithYou Says:

@micah @supersam everyone of those qbs was a first round pick except Flynn…and except for Russell are all on nfl rosters.russell had no work ethic .ponder has been hurt most of his career and EJ too before he got benched by a coach who isn’t there. And winston is twice the qb both of them are and is first to show up last to leave so what’s your point? That jimbo is basically a guru

You sound like you want me to ask you how many of those guys were coached by Jimbo Fisher!?!. Then you want me to ask if Any of those guys had as good a team around him as Winston.
Well my friend Im not going to do that because Im not anti-Winston. I’m just a life long Bucs fan that isn’t sold on either QB but am willing to roll with whatever.

  33. salish_seamonster Says:

Lovie once said he wants athleticism at all positions and has talked about the importance of mobility in the QB position and has mentioned several times about having spread elements in the offense. I take that to indicate he’s leaning Mariota.

Let’s start talking about guys we might be picking in rounds 2-7. The constant Jameis bombing is only slightly less annoying than the nonstop mind-numbing Manziel obsession last year.

  34. WhatTheBucIsWrongWithYou Says:

@ Joseph Mama so are u saying jimbo is bad or pro style offenses are? I’m confused, did you miss the part about injury and work ethic? There was more to that post

  36. Bird Says:

That s hilarious. I was gonna say a bathroom attendant found one of lovie s unflushed turds in the shape of a #5.
Joe s obsession is going to the toilet with non stop Jameis talk. I m down for either Qb that will give them the most wins. I Favor mariota slightly. Just my opinion. Used to like to read about Bucs here on website.
but joe is going lady gaga over Jameis. Just Jameis jameis jameis. kind of like Johnny football last year.

  41. WhatTheBucIsWrongWithYou Says:

If you don’t want to talk about Jameis than here’s an idea, go read a different article or better yet go on ESPN they hate him

  42. WhatTheBucIsWrongWithYou Says:

@wifebeater5 first off your name is wife beater…wow you said it all. And you can make a player draft ready all you want and let them have great college careers, sometimes it doesn’t translate. Ex pamphlets in this state are ken Dorsey, weinke, weurffel, Tebow, and aforementioned

  43. SAMCRO Says:

What a horrible time to have a black coach. Why couldn’t he have been Samoan? j/k …We are going to regret the day we pigeon holed ourselves with another statue. Someone tell me how is it that Winston is better than Glennon. Winston is shorter, fatter, smaller hands, and slower than Glennon. He takes more risk, and is careless with the football.

How is that better? Last year when our O-line couldn’t protect McCown or Glennon, JOE blamed it on the QB’s, and said it was just an excuse to blame it on the O-line. Now, that we are in a position to draft Joe’s criminal the Seminole, Joe is already making future excuses for him in case he plays badly in the future. Don’t figure, JOE’s already saying it could be the O-lines fault.

Glennon is a much better athlete than Winston, and Mariota is a better athlete than Glennon, but for some stupid homeristic reason, FSU fans claim Winston will be our savior? BS … another failed 1st pick in the draft debacle. Winston will go the way of Byron Leftwich while Mariota will have a storied career similar to that of Aaron Rodgers. We will regret the day we selected Winston.

  44. White Tiger Says:

There isn’t much FSU fanbase money…that’s the trouble. The NFL and Jacksonville (who drafted possibly the best QB in 2014, and possibly a better QB than either of the two from 2015)…kinda already has the ‘powerful’ TV market in north Florida staked out to themselves…that is, those who aren’t part of the fanbase Atlanta/New Orleans fanbase.

The I-4 corridor and West Florida are more tied to UF – no one much cares about the minimal fanbase of FSU.

But hey, drafting Kid Fameis would add at least 50 more season ticket holders, maybe another 25 more club level seats…for at least 1 season.

You want to know what would REALLY increase season ticket sales? Winning more than you lose, consistently. Going to the playoffs.

A drop back QB like Kid Fameis ain’t getting that done behind our below-average, free-agent created, offensive line…letting Napoleon Dynamite absorb extra hits, won’t by Kid Fameis any time, and it won’t get him ready to play. Finding a has-been, used up, veteran, free agent, dropback QB won’t help Kid Fameis do anything but lose without being on the field.

If you draft Kid Fameis, and you don’t have a offensive line, then you don’t have a running game, and it doesn’t matter if you have Tom Brady back there…you’re not going to win any games…not for a long time.

  45. WhatTheBucIsWrongWithYou Says:

White tiger…ok ya we need a line and an oc…Collins will be gone, Dotson to RT, free agency next week and then draft in April, so where are you going with this? What’s the point? Name me a team that has built their entire oline all five from a draft? What’s your solution? Don’t draft a qb? If you want a runner cause or oline sucks, then get joe Johnson back

  46. WhatTheBucIsWrongWithYou Says:

Correction *needed an oline and oc

  47. Clint Says:

@White Tiger: with all due respect, you’re crazy.

I live in Columbus, Ohio. Buckeye territory. I am an Indianapolis Colts fan. And guess what – I care about where Jameis lands in the draft. I’m following this blog hourly because I am trying to figure out if it will be Tampa Bay. And as I told my wife – if Tampa Bay lands Jameis, we’re going to have them on the NFL Sunday Ticket a lot more often on Sunday then the previous 10 years I’ve had it combined.

Every Saturday, I tried to watch Winston. Didn’t matter who they were playing and it didn’t matter that I’m not a Florida State fan. I’m a fan of marquee talent, generational talent. If he lands in Tampa Bay, they’re immediately an interesting franchise again and I want to see what they’re up to on Sundays. Don’t be foolish in thinking there aren’t thousands if not millions of people out there like me. Adding a guy like Winston regardless of the talent around him on day one you’re going to increase the franchise popularity and relevance league-wide. They’ll once again lead off SportsCenter (it’s been a while) because nationally, people care about Jameis Winston good or bad. And once he starts winning (it’s what he does) you’re going to have not only an increase in local season ticket sales, but people all over the map who are buying Winston jerseys and Bucs merchandise. Don’t think for a minute that Winston isn’t that impactful. Now if they go Mariota, or trade the pick; forget it.

Hell, I’ve already added JoeBucsfan to my favorites tab at home and at work because of Jameis (and because it’s a the best Bucs blog I’ve found). I’m planning on being around here a while. Jameis is coming boys.

Sorry it took me a while to get back to you, Sam. This was your response to me from a previous thread on my request for the list of excelent spread-option QB’s of the past and present in the NFL.

I don’t know if I could “NOPE” any harder in response. Two guys that are two or three season’s away from being out of the league(Kap/Griffin), one guy who’s team catered to his running tendencies as a rookie and now he can’t stay on the field(Newton), and one guy who is barely average(Dalton).

  51. Nybucsfan Says:

Lol of course that’s what you would think joe lol. What about the last three QB bust out of Jimbo’s system. He couldn’t have been talking about that. I’ll give it to you. You can twist things to look how you want them to.

Sometimes we have a hard time separating hate from praise. Just cause you like a qb doesn’t mean you don’t like the other guy. I think Mariota is a stud…I just can’t trust a guy who hasn’t thrown or completed one pass over 40 yds this year in the air, plus PAC 12 defenses were the worst in the country.look at oregons yac, it’s insane. There it is, right there.

There is no way that they can use the #1 pick in the draft on a spread QB, im sorry. No sane GM is going to do that.
I think the Eagles will probably trade up for Mariota, I just don’t think they’ll have to trade up all that far to get him, probably somewhere around pick #10.

  60. Eric Says:

I like the way you guys limit the pro style QB’s only to FSU but when searching for successful spread style guys in the pros you go to every college program but oregon.

The vast majority of successful NFL quarterbacks came from pro style offenses similar to Jumbos.

Furthermore no one but chip runs anything close to the Oregon spread in the pros.

Without question there are waaaay more successful quarterbacks in the league that came ft I’m offenses similar to what Jameis ran. And waaaay more busts who ran an offense similar to what Marcus ran.

Dont see how that could even be in dispute.

I know a bunch of FSU fans and coaches didn’t agree that that any of those other QB were worthy of their draft status and all of them believe in Jameis.

Wouldn’t Joe’s advertisers like to know that half of all these comments are being made by one person? Find 1 name and stick with it. You will be taken a lot more serious that way. Right now you are just making yourself look real stupid. But here again, you’re a Winston Hero Worshipper

Please tell me what chip Kelly and Oregon has done better look so you really wanna compare quarterbacks through the years? Marcus Mariotta is the first quarterback in ducks history that can even compare to Christian Ponder

  99. White Tiger Says:

@whatthebuciswrongwithyou – uh, ok. how many starting free agent left tackles do you think become free agents?

I’ll answer that for you. ZERO.

If you feel defensive about that FACT, you only have to name one. That’s it, just one free agent tackle and you’ll take away my argument.

Now, how do you think you get a massive-yet-agile Left Tackle to protect slow-footed Fameis’ from the one spot NFL defenses put their best pass rushers?

You can only get them at the TOP of the draft.

That’s the problem you’re facing by sticking to the good old “Pro-Style” system that colleges no longer prepare the players to play in.

What’s MY solution? Do what the Seahawks, 49ers, Panthers and Eagles have done…FORGET trying to spend 3 to 5 years rebuilding an offense that colleges no longer teach.

Implement an offense that takes advantage of the massive amount of talent that only 4 teams out of 32 are currently competing for…at the exact moment that one of the best QB’s for that type of offense in ALL of college football is available to you.

My intent is not to be a negative voice against Fameis Winston – I’m actually hoping to get people to consider that the Bucs have another option. We don’t have to commit to a re-build of a cookie-cutter NFL offense. As Russell Wilson, Cam Newton, Colin Kaepernick and….Nick Foles(?) have proven, you can become a winner much more quickly by adapting the system to the talent of the players.

Draft Mariota, implement a spread-heavy offense (that Koetter’s familiar with), pick up the guards you need to help you run the spread-heavy/WCO/Pro-Style – behind a offensive line deploying a ZBS (zone blocking scheme). You might just find that scheme allows you to utilize the talent you ALREADY have…heck, Seattle went to the playoffs utilizing this SAME model…with o-linemen Pete Carroll plucked off of the waiver wired off other teams practice squads….in Russell Wilson’s FIRST season.

Not sure the Bucs are going to follow this model – but the Seahawks and 49ers have been to 3 Super Bowls, Carolina’s won the division, and the Eagle’s had the hottest offense in the NFL while barely missing the playoff’s.

It’s not MY idea, 4 other teams have already DONE this move – and it’s my contention that the Glazers may actually have intended to make this move when they ALMOST hired Chip Kelly a few years ago, it was their intention when Lovie hired Jeff Tedford…

Just not sure why anyone would want to commit to the YEARS it will take to become viable with a a dropback QB. The expense and time to draft and then re-train a Left Tackle (…who undoubtedly played in a spread system in college as well)?

If you REALLY want instant offensive improvement – draft Mariota and implement this model.

  100. Joe Says:

Someone tell me how is it that Winston is better than Glennon. Winston is shorter, fatter, smaller hands, and slower than Glennon. He takes more risk, and is careless with the football.

Let Joe get this straight. Mike Glennon is a beanpole, compared to Josh Freeman, who ran a 40 at his combine in the same time as Winston, yet Winston is slower than Glennon??? (And people used to rave about Freeman’s athletic ability yet Winston is somehow a “statue?”)

SAMCRO, the sh!t you come up with just blows Joe’s mind.

Did you watch any Florida State games the past two years? Hell, one of his best traits — from NFL folks, not from Joe — is his pocket awareness and ability to slide from traffic.

It’s one thing if you don’t like Winston. Joe understands that. That’s fine. But to either spread flat out lies or display your ignorance (again) is beyond the pale.

  101. Joe Says:

how many decent starting free agent left tackles do you think become free agents?

  102. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Marcus Mariota Interceptions 14 in three years
Jameis Winston Interceptions 28 in two years

Lovie has also stated he likes a mobile QB and he likes the SF & Seattle offenses….

Could he be counting successful QBs as Wilson & Kaepernick….Newton etc?
    Perhaps..

I wiouldn’t just yet toot the horns for Winston.

Also…the question asked was about on-field….how do you think he would answer a question about off-field?

Historically speaking, there are way more ‘good character’,’elite work ethic’ guys who have been successful QB’s vs the party animals….

  106. lurker Says:

2014 above decent free agent left tackles:

Jared Veldheer, OT, Raiders. Age: 27.
Signed with Cardinals (5 years, $35 million)

Jared Veldheer missed the first 12 weeks of the season with a triceps tear. Perhaps the Raiders will be able to retain him at a cheaper price as a consequence. If so, they should be happy because Veldheer is a solid blind-side protector.

Branden Albert, OT, Chiefs. Age: 29.
Signed with Dolphins (5 years, $46 million)

Branden Albert is more talented than this rating says he is, but he’s always injured and has played all 16 games only once in his career. He’s a strong blind-side protector when healthy.

  107. Pickgrin Says:

foolish ANTI- Winston trolls that is

  108. lurker Says:

hmmmmmmmmmmm there goes your theory white tiger. as i’ve said before, it is easier to build the lines through free agency or later in the draft. it is time for our franchise quarterback at #1.

  109. Pickgrin Says:

Erik – are you saying Winston is a “party animal”???

  110. lurker Says:

lovie actually stated he would like some spread but that those qb’s get hurt way too often. and they do.

  111. lurker Says:

i also contend that winston can run whatever offense they want to run. his football skills are ahead of mariota. winston can scramble and move around. mariota needs a big picture and gets sacked a ton, despite his “athleticism”.

jameis christ will resurrect this franchise. i believe.

  112. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

That’s a bit of a stretch, Joe. Wishful thinking on your part, lol.

  113. Pickgrin Says:

Koetter will be inserting some spread elements with Winston as his QB. Jameis ran a spread throughout High School and excelled as a runner. He might not run very fast in a straight line – but Winston is a VERY effective runner when the situation calls for it. Wait and see – if you thought Freeman looked pretty good the 1st couple years when he was running – wait till you see how effective Winston will be with situational runs.

  114. Pickgrin Says:

Dude is just a good football player period. Like the play that Licht still has saved on his phone where Jameis threw a nice block 30 yards downfield on the last D player standing in the way of a TD.

On one of his interceptions last year – Winston tackled the interceptor and simultaneously punched the ball out like damn linebacker and FSU recovered.

Jameis Winston = GOOD FOOTBALL PLAYER

  115. Supersam Says:

I still think we should draft Mariota first overall to be our quarterback, then draft Winston in the second round to play right guard, what you guys think? That way he can eat all the crab legs and Burger King soda he wants! Everybody wins!

  116. Pickgrin Says:

And how many FSU games did you watch the last 2 years Sam? You certainly qualify as one of the anti-Winston trolls I was referring to.

  117. Clint Says:

Guys they aren’t drafting Mariota; and if they do they’re honestly not worth rooting for anymore. Just a take from an outsider NFL fan of another franchise who watched both guys a lot in college. Didn’t anyone learn anything by Rg3 and how damn fragile he is? Mariota will never play 16 in a full season.

Jameis translates more like a Big Ben or Newton. Durable.

  118. WhatTheBucIsWrongWithYou Says:

@white tiger…geeze did you write a novel? I fell asleep half way through that post. You say trade down get a lineman then you say draft Mariota and name 3 out of 32 teams that implemented a system and only one has won a Super Bowl. Nice! And ur tackles are in lurker’s post, you can thank him

  119. WhatTheBucIsWrongWithYou Says:

If you watched any Fsu games, I’ll point out Winston’s mobility against ok st in week one in Dallas. Newton get hurts running his offense, kaep kinda sucks in case you missed 2014, and Wilson is shifty cuz he’s little, not a downhill kinda guy more make you miss, mariota is 6’5, different agility great speed tho

  120. WhatTheBucIsWrongWithYou Says:

And Bryan Bulaga is a tackle and a free agent…

  121. tval Says:

@ clint, me too..columbus nole 🙂 also a buckeye fan, under urban and coop, not tress. You sound like a knowledgeable and objective sports fan..we’re the last of a dying breed. Im a fan of great football, first, and thats what jameis brings..ive also added joe to my faves and will watch all bucs games and get a hideous jersey! No ones a bigger eagles fan but chips negotiating with himself to move in top 5 for a qb nobody really wants..not more than mett (wldnt pass winston) jax (they might not pass) oak (might not pass on jameis) wash (gruden wldnt pass) jets (def wldnt pass) chi (def wldnt pass jameis) mia (would pass but shouldnt) rams (would not pass jameis) cards (arians well documented distaste) cle (wld not pass) they all just dont find mariota intriguing enough to risk him over mett, bortles, carr, geno, tannehill, bradford/austin, carson/stanton or hoyer/ johnny..that speaks volumes, no?? This media darling, youd think hes first good character nfl player, can only ride that momentum to the film room, then its game time..sorry, marcus fans 🙁

  122. White Tiger Says:

@lurker – see @joe’s clarification of my point.

@whatthebuciswrongwithyou – Bryan Bulaga is NOT hitting free agency. Ted Thompson said that re-signing him is a PRIORITY.

The part you both missed – is that you CAN pick up adequate linemen for a ZBS paired with a spread-heavy/”Pro-Style” hybrid.

Just because it’s long, doesn’t mean it’s not accurate.

Next time I’ll use smaller words, maybe you’ll catch on then.

And uh, yeah. Keep was drafted in 2011, went to the Super Bowl in 2012, and the NFC Championship in 2013…his only down year starting he went 8-8 (we’d throw a party at 8-8).

As for RG3 – he started as a rookie in a spread-heavy attack and finished 10-6, won the division, and went to the playoffs in his first season (where the ‘skins were beaten by Kaep’s hers).

Since Russell took over Seattle’s high powered spread-heavy/”Pro-Style” in 2012 – they’ve gone to the playoff’s, won a Super Bowl, and lost a Super Bowl…

I can keep going…you’re not doing real well in this ‘debate’.

  123. lurker Says:

now you are just being sill or don’t know your linemen. it is not hard to bing those names. so those players i listed from last year are not decent? only you think so. so there you go, you can’t debate, when you don’t know of which you speak.

i have listed before the gimmick offenses that were supposed to change the league. they have some facets absorbed but disappear. run and shoot, wildcat, greatest show on turf, and zone read now. michael vick, vince young, tim tebow, those are your qb’s. they do well for a bit, just like kaepernik, rg3, even wilson. they also get injured a lot. so i guess your plan is to draft a qb every 3-4 years, correct?

i’d rather take the best qb (jameis) who will do well and for 8,10, years or more.

so if we don’t draft mariota, i hope you go enjoy the team that picks him. i assume the eagles. good luck my friend and tell miguel, hello.

  124. flmike Says:

Neither one of these QBs has taken a snap in the NFL, so no one knows what they will do…with the draft you’re literally throwing $hit against the wall and hoping it sticks…at this point I don’t care who they pick, because if they can’t win more than 6 games with one of them next season Lovie should be fired, and ultimately that is my dream. This franchise is a freaking mess, made worse by the hiring this moron, his talent evaluation is garbage, he hasn’t an innovative bone in his body, if it worked 25 years ago it’ll work today old school attitude is garbage in today’s NFL, you can’t play not to lose, which is what he does. For however long as he’s the head coach the Bucs will be mediocre at best & a crap last place team at worst, so in reality it doesn’t matter who they pick as long as Lovie is the HC, they’ll still be the Bucs, the NFL’s version of the KC Royals, LA Clippers, NY Islanders, a team that is garbage but every 20 years or so makes it to the post season.

  125. WhatTheBucIsWrongWithYou Says:

    @ White Tiger

You said name a tackle who’s a free agent, just providing an answer…
As for your post on those qb’s, have you heard The Outfield’s “Your Love”? “Just cause you’re right, that don’t mean I’m wrong” Yes those qbs had 1-2 good years, where’s Kaep now? Griffin? Theyre regressing. When you give me three examples in the history of the league and only one of them actually won a super bowl running that “baylor spread offense” then I feel like you made my argument for me, what’s the debate? you basically agree with me…Manning, Roeth, Brady, Brees, Manning, Flacco, Rodgers=pro style, pocket passers, idc how many snaps they take in shotgun or if they break a run every 20 attempts, they THROW from the pocket.

  126. Bucfan4life Says:

Hey SuperSam, Bree’s went to Purdue, Manning went to TN, and Rogers went to Cal. They should all suck because nobody else from those schools has ever panned out. Who gives a shit if the school has churned out QBs in the past. It is the player that matters, not the school that they went to. I will go ahead and state the obvious anyway! Oregon produced Harrington and the amazing Akili Smith! Idiotic posts like yours should be banned!

  127. Senor Mofo Says:

Joe somehow thinks this Lovie quote indicates a clear preference for Jameis Winston?

Joe must be really good at playing Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.

  128. JFF Says:

    GRASP THOSE STRAWS HARD

I heard Lovie prefers his coffee black with just a tsp. of milk. Surely that means Winston will be the pick amirite?!?!?

  129. Bucs4Ducks Says:

If I may insert my two cents, Winston may look like the better choice on the surface but really break him down. This man threw interceptions like it was nothing, some to wide open corners, all because he became pressured, when the pocket collapsed he didn’t seem comfortable but still tossed the ball. If you want a good comparison then watch the FSU vs Oregon game, Marcus threw fewer times then Winston for the same yardage and when he ran, he produced yards. Winston cracks under pressure, he played sub par teams during his time at FSU and became a legend for it. Give us mariota, at least when they break through our sorry o-line we’ll have a guy that can get out of there. All I see in jameis is another johnny football except he’ll be starting.

  130. Buxfan Says:

Wow! If Mariota threw 28 INT’s in a gimmicky offense like the one he mastered, he should be shot on site.

  131. Bucs4Ducks Says:

@buxfan -so you’d rather take the quarterback who nearly threw for the most interceptions last season, mind you against sub par defenses. Buffalo defenses would tear him up, Houston would destroy him, seashells probably wouldn’t even give him a touchdown. He has a habit for throwing into too tight of coverage and not being able to check down field. In addition, he’s horrible out of pocket. If he does well in the league I’d be surprised but the way the nation is talking him up, he better go to at least playoffs his first year
