“Alone” With Team Glazer

March 4th, 2015

team glazer, lovie

Outside of the big bosses at One Buc Palace, who would know more about the inner workings of Team Glazer and their role in the NFL draft than former Bucs rockstar general manager Mark Dominik?

Dominik opened up yesterday.

Dominik currently works for BSPN and SiriusXM NFL Radio, and he was on a fancy BSPN podcast yesterday and emphasized he was certain that Winston arriving in Tampa so soon was a result of the extreme curiosity of Team Glazer because Winston sits atop the Bucs’ draft board.

Winston will spend “a ton of time with the Glazer family,” Dominik said. “The Glazer family are going to be the ones spending the most time with him — alone.”

While Dominik admitted the scale is somewhat smaller, he compared the situation to the time Team Glazer spent with Ndamukong Suh and Gerald McCoy when the Bucs had the No. 3 overall pick in 2010.

Did Team Glazer like Jameis Winston? Time will tell.

    @Robert 9

wow dude he wrote this article specifically to shut you up

  2. The Real Malloy Says:

Hopefully they thought he was an arrogant jerk and sent him home early….

No need to bring Mariota in…just set him up with a good realtor so he can get settled ASAP

  3. Pawel Says:

    What about Mark Barron?

  4. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

Well, in public Winston seemed to say and do all the right things, so unless he told the Glazer Boys to FHRITP behind closed doors, he probably left a good impression.

  5. DallasBuc Says:

Draft Winston, sign Suh and Hardy. Sht, even Lovie could win with that!

  6. NJBucsFan Says:

I think we give Chip Kelly the big middle finger and draft Marcus Marriota

  7. Mike10 Says:

The Glazers were not in control of the McCoy/Suh dilemma, we all knew Suh wouldn’t fall to us. But I’m worried we did more homework at that time on both those players than we’re doing now on both these quarterbacks.

Do I think James should be the pick, well ya, but then again my jobs not on the line either. If it was, I would be evaluating every single aspect of BOTH James and MAriota’s lives/games to be 1000% sure I’m making the best pick

Its hard for me to take anything Dominick says. It would be that same if that Italian Cruise Captain that sank the Cruise Liner telling me how to drive my boat!!!

  11. tmaxcon Says:

Glazers are drooling over the thought of the day after draft merchandise records that Jameis gear will set.

Jameis gear will be flying off the shelf so fast Barry, ERIC Clean whatever and Nybucfan will be on here complaining about waiting on the shipping delays for their shiny new 5 jerseys.

let’s see how fast they all come to the party. my guess 3 or 4 wins out the gate might do the trick. it won’t take many… guaranteed. Order em up!

  12. robert 9 Says:

well, maybe not passed, but they took mccoy and look who’s a FA now! doh!

  13. MTM Says:

The Glazers probably took Winston out to the movie’s to see a documentary.

  14. al121976 Says:

Robert, I don’t think they passed on Suh, he was drafted before McCoy.

  15. tmaxcon Says:

let me clarify before the ignorant ones weigh in… i don’t expect Winston to be a cure all or put the bucs in the playoffs as a rookie. that would be nice but unrealistic. but he is the best option. lovie needs Jameis

  16. Ray Rice Says:

So which Glazer spent time with Charmin Man ASJ? He needs to get slapped.

  17. Pickgrin Says:

Jameis has likely already won over the Glazers and its now just a matter of dotting Is and crossing Ts. The Bucs have had their eye on drafting Jameis going all the way back to this time last year – as evidenced by the fact that they did not make a play for any of last year’s QB class but chose instead to add some valuable weapons for Jameis (or Mariota) to get the ball to. Smart – very smart.

Spend a high 2014 pick on a marginal QB prospect (all QBs that came out last year were marginal) with only 1 good receiver to throw to?? (Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen) – Or stock up on some highly picked offensive weapons and wait till next year (2015) when there will be a couple legitimate franchise QBs to choose from. Then just to make sure – you tank the last few games of a losing season just to ensure you can get one of these guys without overpaying – AND have your choice.

And some of you think L&L are baffoons.. SMH.

DAMN HOW CAN ONE PERSON BE WRONG THAT MUCH? YOU DONT KNOW ANYTHING AT ALL. DETROIT DRAFTED BEFORE THE BUCS, THEY DIDNT GET TO CHOOSE THEY GOT THE LEFTOVERS AND SAID THATS WHO THEY WANTED FROM THE BEGINNING….THE FACT THAT I EVEN HAVE TO TELL YOU HOW MCCOY GOT HERE MAKES YOU IRREVELANT….SINCE YOU DONT KNOW IT 2 COMES BEFORE 3 WHICH IS WHERE MCCOY WAS DRAFTED

  19. APinTP? Says:

HEY JOE, any reactions or comments from Glazers, Lovie or Licht on Adrian Peterson picking Tampa as one of five teams he wants to play for?
What better weapon for a rookie QB than an all-pro (All everything) running back to hand the ball off to.

  20. tmaxcon Says:

    Pickgrin

I am very anti lovie but will gladly swallow a crap sandwich if he makes better decisions this year and stays the hell out of the way of the offense. Lovie made several huge mistakes last year that I just feel like there is a pattern. I like Licht but his power is limited. Maybe licht has more say after 2-14 who knows only the glazers licht and lovie. the one thing for sure is they will go down together if they blow free agency and the draft again. Mike Evans is awesome but there are some open questions about the rest of the draft picks from last year. to early to tell. I don’t think he can change but hope to hell he proves me wrong.

  21. MTM Says:

    @ Pickgrin

You make some valid points. Just not sure agree the Glazers have Winston locked in yet.

  22. ben Says:

BUCS ..Don’t draft Winston …don’t need a thug as face of our team !

  23. Mike10 Says:

Pickgrin, I get you’re argument…. I just think you’re giving these boys a bit too much credit

YOu could make the argument that they had their eye on Marcus. Lest we forget he elected to stay in school last year but was all but certain to be in this years draft class while it was uncertain if Jameis would.

    Some of you are hilarious.

It’s like watching someone try to get out of quicksand. Instead of saying you are wrong, you fight it even more.

    Good stuff. Thanks.

  27. Supersam Says:

To me it looked like Winston was hiding back, almost hiding his true self in that interveiw on the Bucs website, where was the sarcasm the cockiness the “it’s me and Peyton manning Tom Brady” bullspit?? If he was trying to hide his true colors, which I think he was, Team Glazer will see right through that. To me thats just another red flag

  28. tmaxcon Says:

    Robert 9

    Help me with this please

newsflash, they passed on the cocky self centered suh and went with the high character guy.

    -=—-

How many playoff games has the thug played in versus the choir boy?

The world is not perfect pal and if Lovie and the Glazers can’t manage some character flaws they are in the wrong business. Glazers and Lovie both have a long history of taking on character projects.

  29. tmaxcon Says:

Supersam — Please seek help dude. your delusions are entertaining but I am sincerely concerned about your mental state. there is plenty of programs for you. Obama has no problem spending other peoples money to treat you.

“aw look, I got a new lapdog. good girl buc4lyfe

Its pretty hard for the Bucs to pass on Suh when he was drafted a head of McCoy…

Do you read anything before you comment or do you just type the first thing that comes to your head??

  31. flmike Says:

    @tmaxcon
It’s not enough to market merchandise to your fan base alone, you have to market to the broader football (NFL) fan base…and nationally, Winston is just not seen as he is seen by the FSU homers. Sorry, but, your boy is a homer hero who is seen as a future bust by everyday non-FSU, North Fla, Lower Alabama fans. Just go read the comments on the sports sites about him, the everyday fans for the most part just don’t like him.

  32. Supersam Says:

@tmaxcon sorry but I’d still take McCoy over Suh anyday. Even if he is a “choir” boy, lions didn’t get to the playoffs because of Suh hitting the quarterbacks after the whistle blows, they got there because of Stafford and Megatron.

  33. gotbbucs Says:

I keep waiting for the Mariota crowd to post up the names of all these spread-option QB’s that currently are or previously did excelent in the NFL.
I have a feeling I’ll be waiting a while because i don’t believe the list exists.

I like Mariota the person, but he has the exact same demeanor as Freeman and Glennon, and guys aren’t going to want to go to war with that guy.

  34. robert 9 Says:

    awwwwwww….das a good giwllll .

fetch my paper and slippers now fucmylyfe

  35. Supersam Says:

Cam Newton, Colin Kapernick, Andy Dalton, Robert Griffin…. All have been too the playoffs and all were ” spread” quarterbacks in college, should I keep going?

  36. LargoBuc Says:

You could take anything Winston says or does and turn it into a red flag. The process will play itself out. I doubt any quotes Jameis gave for the local media are of any signifigance.

  37. Supersam Says:

Russel Wilson even played some spread in college for a year or 2 before he transferred

  38. BFFL Says:

I find it interesting as to why the Bucs would be so public about this visit. This runs counter to how the Glazers and Lovie typically operate. They are either trying to sell Winston to the fan base or trying to create a huge smokescreen.

  39. Couch Fan Says:

This is comical watching the haters make even bigger idiots out of themselves grasping at straws. I’m just gonna sit back and watch them get pulled under their own sea of stupidity.

    Welcome to Tampa, Jameis!!

  40. Supersam Says:

@gotbucs was that fast enough for you?

  41. adamant Says:

    gotbucs Says:
I like Mariota the person, but he has the exact same demeanor as Freeman and Glennon, and guys aren’t going to want to go to war with that guy.

I couldn’t agree more! Winston is a proven leader. Charismatic. Will motivate those around him. Won’t be bothered if trailing in the 4th quarter because his confidence and desire to win will pump the team up.

  42. Supersam Says:

Just because you design an offense in college that gets recivers open, doesn’t mean the guy throwing the ball to him is a total dipspit, in fact Oregons offense is very complex with a lot of moving parts and the quarterback has to think and react almost instantly. I’m sure Mariota will have no trouble adapting.

  43. Supersam Says:

@adamant Wrong again, Kyle Long who played with Mariota at Oregon, said he was one of the “greatest Warriors” he’s ever played with.

  44. Donovan Says:

NC St. changed to a spread under Dave Doeren after Russel Wilson left. Wilson’s OC at NC State was Dana Bible.

“Pete Thomas packed his bags and moved across the country for the opportunity to play quarterback at NC State, deciding to leave Colorado State behind after his coach was fired.

The draw at NC State? Tom O’Brien and Dana Bible, two coaches who run a pro-style scheme that best suits what Thomas can do. ”

    Pro-Style

  46. chickster Says:

Winston will be the biggest bust mark my words this will doom tampa for 4 years just wait for it

  47. Supersam Says:

It amazes me that you Winston lovers knock a guy because he don’t act like a fool on campus and around the city. Just because Mariota isn’t a loud mouth, doesn’t mean he can’t lead a team. I’ve yet to see Russell Wilson scream at anyone lol Aaron Rodgers? Nope. Peyton Manning whines a lot but that’s about it.

  48. LargoBuc Says:

To find an offensive system in college where there are ZERO spread elements is almost impossible. Jameis being the pro style QB that he is we’re lucky we have a chance to get him. But as more and more spread QB’s come out teams that need a QB will have no choice but to take one and change their offense to a spread or just hope the kid can learn the lingo.

    @ Pickgrin
    You make some valid points.

Yes they ARE valid points and I totally understand the scepticism when we just came off a 2-14 season. There were a few moves I thought were bad ideas last year as well (getting rid of Zuttah in particular). But they made a lot of moves and considering how little they had to work with coming in (Thanks Dom!!) – I think this team IS poised to turn the corner and at the every least be competitive moving forward. Especially if you add a talented QB into the mix.

And yes J – you COULD make the argument they were looking at Mariota the whole time – or that they were glad that there would be at least 1 if not both of these guys to choose from this year. But in my mind – there is just too much evidence swinging Winston’s way. From the Offensive coaches hired to the weapons we already have in place to the move to get rid of McCown and keep Glennon – it all points to Jameis and a semi-traditional pocket passer based offensive system with a few elements of West coast and spread thrown in.

Say what you want about Winston’s “character issues” (which are ridiculously overblown) – the Kid is simply one of the best QBs to come out in a long time and has everything you want in a franchise QB prospect.

Mariota is very good too – better than any QB to have come out since Luck and RG3 in fact – But Winston is better and is much easier to project into the NFL because of the system he ran – you can see him on 27 games of tape doing exactly what most NFL teams would be asking of him. Not so with Mariota. Mariota is a great athlete and a good passer – a very good QB overall in College – but he does not have the experience running a standard NFL type offense like Winston does so there is a lot of projecting involved in trying to assess what he will be like playing in the pros. That scares teams a good bit more than a few minor bad decisions made by young Winston. The evidence of those points can easily be found in the fact that 9 out of every 10 NFL analysts and draft “experts” are projecting Winston as the #1 pick after digging deeply into tape on both players.

  50. Supersam Says:

I read an article the other day that said were so caught up in theos Winston circus, that were missing how great Mariota actually really is because he’s not a “media type”.

stick to your profession and I’ll speak on behalf of mine. I own a screen printing business and have contract printed for all the sports leagues on multiple occasions over the years. They frequently farm out regional work when demand is high. I also follow trends via industry magazines. I have seen the demographics of his FSU jerseys you might be surprised. People like winners simple as that. The people that have the same concerns as you are a very minimal percentage, do you think for a minute a 20 something even realizes he was falsely accused of anything hell half don’t even know who the president is. You will see even with Tampa being such a tiny market, mark my words he will have a top ten jersey for at least 4 weeks between draft night and the end of the year. guaranteed. the percentages of revenue they will receive from merchandise is ten fold what they receive for ticket sales. especially when they have to buy up their own seats to get the games on local. Oh and I am hurricane guy not a FSU homer I do prefer FSU over the gaytors but calling me an fsu homer is not very accurate.

  53. Yeah you Says:

I’d like to see what Michael Sam can do for our dline. Not being sarcastic.

  55. BFFL Says:

I’m not concerned with Winston’s off-the-field issues, but am very concerned with his on-the-field issues. He was phenomenal as a Freshman, but not this past season. In fact, Glennon played better against NFL talent with a lack of coaching and OL compared to Winston against ACC talent with great coaching and OL play. It is Winston’s inconsistency that bothers me and no one in the media brings it up. All they do is show his highlights from his Freshman season and ignore all the red flags waving in their face.

  56. WS99 Says:

Winston vs Glennon should be a nice little battle in camp. I think these two will be a great team.

  57. Lion Says:

Smaller scale is an understatement. This is way bigger, especially because this concerns the most important position and also we control the draft. It was a pretty damn easy choice if you ask me for Dominik to make. All he could control was to draft whichever player Lions didn’t, easy as pie. Side note, McCoy > Suh

THough I guess this pick is just as easy when you pick first and Winston is there. No brainer, you take the best QB available.

  58. bo Says:

You tools are constantly arguing about something that we won’t know the answer to for 3-4 years….who is going to be a better QB…Jameis or Marcus…if any of you knew anything you would not be wasting time on a pointless message board spewing the same nonsense day after day…after day.

It is fine to have an opinion on who they should take…but to say you KNOW one is going to be better to than the other is total nonsense

  59. WS99 Says:

    Side note, McCoy > Suh

That’s hilarious. Are you a professional comedian or do you just work part time on JBF.

  64. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Did team Glaser like Winston?

That is probably oversimplifying things a bit.

Did team Glazer trust Winston is more appropriate.

It’s one thing to say the right things at a presser….but it’s the follow-up questions that usually make the difference…
A person can be schooled to say the right things until they are faced with the unknown.
I am not passing questioning Winston’s ability….just saying that there is a huge difference between the public interviews and private.

  65. ericakinsman Says:

don’t draft this criminal. he’s a monster behind that smile

  66. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Erica Kinsman has more versions of her story than Jameis has interceptions.

  67. Harry Says:

Any one of you who think Glennon and Winston are equal, or even close to it, are delusional. Are you smarter than GMs of all 32 NFL teams? If Winston goes in the Top 5 picks (if he gets past #1) and all 32 teams passed on MG8 until the Bucs took him in the third round, how the f-k can they be anywhere close to having near the same talent level?

    You sound stupid.

  68. mikeh Says:

100% agree fsu WINSTON lovers on here are a bunch of tools. and who cares! they are not making the pick neither are we so wait and see folks. if its josh freemon #2 oh well! bucs will be crap for another 6 years or so. then these same people will say we need a franchise QB boo! hoo! same crap every year.

  69. mikeh Says:

Winston is nothing more than a phony! talk is cheap cost money to buy rum. and if they pick this clown get yourself a bottle.

  70. Josh P Says:

Once again your Josh Freeman comparison lack credibility..I could careless who people want the Bucs to draft but if going to comment at least have something educated to say…Freeman was a reach in the Fist Round anyway.. That was Raheems boy in college..

  71. Dick2111 Says:

    @maxcon … “Lovie needs Jameis”?

    Might be true, might not.

Fact is … Lovie needs to WIN.

If Winston’s play doesn’t translate into wins, or if he proves to be the second coming of Johnny Football with some stupid stunt off the field, the same people who are calling for him to be the #1 choice will be the same ones who’ll throw him to the curb.

  72. WS99 Says:

    @harry

    Schiano. Nuff said

  73. Nick2 Says:

  74. Eric Says:

I feel confident the Glazers were very impressed with Mr. Winston.

Not because he was putting on an act, but because he is a genuinely good guy.

Just like everyone else who knows him states.

Welcome to Tampa Jaboo. Gonna be a privilege watching you QB the bucs and be the face of the franchise over then next 10-15 years.

  75. Josh P Says:

    @MikeH

“if they pick this clown get yourself a bottle.”

If they draft him ill by two. 1 to drink in celebration and the other to pour out for my dead hommie because i feel like you might end it if the Bucs pick Winston.

  76. flmike Says:

    @tmaxcon

I will do that sir, I’ll keep that in mind when I’m talking with our NFL team, as I work for one of the NFL’s partner networks (we carry the AFC) in the sports dept.

As I’ve said before, if they pick Winston, I’ll give him a chance to win me over, but if he screws up, I won’t be shocked, just disappointed that all the flags were there for everyone to see, yet they were ignored in the name of expediency.

BTW, a majority of the writers I have spoken to have all said the same thing more or less which is, great talent, dumb kid, you hope he grows up, but leopard’s don’t change their stripes.

Now, if I starting naming names no one would ever speak to me again. Trust me, that’s what I have been told. crazy how pete prisco, cbssports, releases his mock 3/3 and states:
“While so much can change the next two months, one thing I don’t see changing is Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the first pick. They have no other choice in my eyes.”

rob rang, cbssports, released his mock 3/1 and at #1:
“1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers — Jameis Winston, QB, Florida State: The release of Josh McCown appears to signal that the Bucs are locking in on a quarterback with this pick and, at least on the field, Winston is clearly the most pro-ready passer in this class. Winston’s off-field issues are a significant concern, of course, which is why his most important tests at the combine were his interviews. Lovie Smith might be precisely the steady hand that Winston needs to take full advantage of his undeniable talent. It isn’t difficult to imagine Tampa’s offense making a huge improvement in 2015 with the strong-armed and accurate Winston firing passes to huge targets Mike Evans, Vincent Jackson and Austin Seferian-Jenkins

and of course, dane brugler, cbssports.com, released his mock 3/1 and shows:
“1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Jameis Winston, QB, Florida State: Asking around at the combine, I couldn’t find anyone (NFL scout, analyst, etc.) who doesn’t think Winston will be the No. 1 pick to the Buccaneers. Can the Tampa coaches and front office trust Winston? That’s the only question, but the on-field talent is too good to pass up.”

so those are the three big guns at cbssports all for winston #1. so i have no idea what writers that won’t go on record saying what you stated. smh

  88. Flmike Says:

And I never said anyone didn’t say he’d be the pick, but what writers write for public consumption about a players talent and their personal opinion of an individual are two completely different things. One based upon what they see talent wise on the field and the other what they feel about that player as a person. I can almost guarantee you, not one writer across the sports spectrum, unless provoked will ever say something personal about a player, unless of course, the player is a total douche and everyone knows it already, or the writer is so high on the totem pole it doesn’t matter, or they’re looking to commit career suicide, because once you’ve crossed that line access to players becomes very tough.

  89. Flmike Says:

I have no problem quoting a writer if it’s something he has published, but I’m never going to undercut someone who I spoke to as a friend or associate and was made privy to their personal opinion or information they may know about a player or players. That makes them not want to talk to you anymore.

i have no problem with that, if you are privy to said information. but then it is just an unsubstantiated, worthless rumor. if they are writers in the field of football then they should express their feeling openly. seems strange not to, especially this time of year.

also, i posted the real football writers for cbssportsline.com and their polls/opinions. it seems silly that your unsubstantiated, unsourced writers disagree but will not state so/why. maybe they are baseball writers or fashion editors. either way, it carries no more weight than any other person’s opinion or unsubstantiated rumor.

Tell ya what, next time you’re in the Ft. Lauderdale area, you come by, I’ll show you round the offices, introduce you to some of our other real writers, we have a staff of 15 or so staff writers, then there’s our nationals who don’t work out of this office, but visit frequently. We also do all our web broadcasts and all fantasy work here as well.
