Mistake Dismissed: Bucs Cut Anthony Collins

March 10th, 2015

It was clear the Buccaneers waved the white flag on Anthony Collins in early December. And now it’s official.

An expensive free agent harpooned by Lovie Smith and Jason Licht last year, Collins has been released. The man asked to replace iconic left tackle Donald Penn is a former Buccaneer.

Collins was ugly in the 2014 preseason but played a couple of good games early in the regular season. In September, Collins also was known for his extreme passion, angry and then teary after losses.

He even snatched a leadership role and was credited for heartfelt motivational tactics in Pittsburgh, the site of the Bucs’ first victory.

Collins seemed like a great teammate but something went terribly wrong. His play declined significantly. The injury bug bit him and he missed a few starts. Then he was a healthy scratch, benched for the final three games.

Joe still doesn’t get why Collins was signed to big money by Tampa Bay. Before last season, Collins, 29, had never made more than seven starts in a season. He was a career backup. And he played like one last year — at one of the most important positions on the field.

Various reports claim the Bucs owe Collins $3 million for 2015, despite him being off the roster. Joe thinks that money will be money well wasted.

Sends a clear message…..when the Bucs will spend $3 mil to dump you….

    Like the message!!!

  3. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Three million bucks for doing nothing! And I’m not picking on Collins. Pro sports is now full of wildly overpaid athletes.

I don’t mind people getting what they’ve earned. But I’m so freaking over the professional sports owners like Sternberg scamming cities for HUGE subsidies so owners can make billions and their employees millions.

It’s clear this money is not necessary! Until taxpayers wise up I guess the owners will continue their socialism and live large off of we taxpayers.

Not to worry….Buc Luck…we’ll be watching him play in January

  7. The Real Malloy Says:

He must’ve done something bad….Had he not, we could’ve tried him at RG. Oh well, looks like John Coffee will be starting LT barring a significant FA pickup or high draft pick.

  8. Architek Says:

He was the main taller during season and off-season, good luck making that kind of money again quitting clown.

  9. Ray Rice Says:

I would take Kenyatta Walker over this piece if $hit!

  10. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

They were better off just leaving his spot empty on the field and run plays without him. Just run 3 O-lineman that’s how bad Collins was.

  11. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

Addition by subtraction with this move. Hopefully Lovie and Licht add a stud OT through the draft or free agency to protect the Cannon in 2015!

  12. Jacko101 Says:

    Good day Collins

  13. Celly Says:

maybe this move will give some people some more confidence in Lovie/Licht.

Willing to admit a mistake and just move on is a good trait.

With that being said, I would not be in favor of releasing Michael Johnson (yet).

As the great Raheem Morris said (the last holder of a winning record in Tampa), “I’ll tolerate you until i can replace you”

  14. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I’ve frequently posted the stat from WalterFootball and others that show just 54% of first round draft picks making it in the NFL. 50% for 2nd rounders and of course it drops quickly after that.

What I haven’t seen are any stats on FA’s. It’s hard to quantify whether and FA was successful or not. It’s clear Johnson and Collins were busts. EDS and Mankins were not exactly successes either. But what about a player like Verner.
He’s a competent NFL CB who does not hurt the team. He’s not a dynamic impact guy but what’s his price tag. How many Verners could be had for one Revis? Well if Revis gets his 20 million that’s 5 Verners. I love Revis but if I gotta build a team with a salary cap in place I like Verner a lot!!! 5 players the talent of Verner are simply more valuable than ONE player even as gifted as Revis. How many plays is Revis on the field?

  15. The original "Kevin" Says:

They must have someone on the practice squad better than him.

  16. lurker Says:

  23. feelthepewterpower Says:

if the Buccs are going to Yuck up things…it was “best” it happened last year with no coordinator and no long-term qb in place. We need veritable LT to save (hopefully Jameis, if not Mariota) from getting destroyed ala McCown and Glennon were last year. You can’t think, function as a qb taking that many shots…

  24. ddneast Says:

StPeteBucsFan, we have finally found something we agree on. I don”t begrudge the players getting the big bucks because they are capitalists in the highest regard.
But setting the owners up with huge stadiums with sweetheart deals no matter who they are is like welfare for the rich.

  25. ddneast Says:

Bucgatr, I have no ill feelings for Winston but when you steal crab legs from a Publix, you are a thief. So far that’s the worst you can call him.

  26. Pelbuc Says:

Best FA move yet. Now follow up with renegoiating MJ’s contract or cut him also. Better to sign Clayborn to a 1 yr contract and draft Oline and Dline and LB. Sign Conte so they can cut Goldson as well. Problem is these guys don’t draft well either.

  27. bucgatr 71 Says:

I have no ill feelings for Winston either dneast. None whatsoever. He has been caught stealing twice, the crab legs, and the soda at Burger King. I am not the one calling him a thief but if the shoe fits wear it. There is something wired wrong when you can justify taking something that doesn’t belong to you because it is just a little thing

  28. BucFanForever Says:

The Eagles/Rams Trade gives me hope that Lovie/Licht can get a trade for Rodgers for Glennon done.

  29. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

It’s also been rumored that SEVERAL student athletes get away with “free food” from grocery stores throughout the country.

  30. bucrightoff Says:

Somewhere Donald Penn laughs at Lovie and Licht for this one.

  31. StPeteBucsFan Says:

“But setting the owners up with huge stadiums with sweetheart deals no matter who they are is like welfare for the rich.”

Indeed ddneast we are near agreement! I would only change the word “like”.

It IS welfare for the rich. If Americans every opened their freaking eyes and read some political and economic information we’d stop giving away everything to the richest in this society.

E.G. I’m willing to bet that the vast majority of you here pay at least 7.65% in taxes on EVERY dollar you earn. Worse your employer has to match it so that’s like a 15% hit on your earnings. That’s ON EVERY DOLLAR YOU EARN.

Wanna know how much the rich who whine about the 47% pay on their dollars for that FICA tax. NOTHING over $118,500. Do the math. Somebody earning 10 million a year pays NOTHING on 9 million 900,000 dollars while you pay 7.65% on EVERY dollar you earn. Now the same jackwagons who receive this benefit btch at you if you don’t make enough to kick in some Federal Income tax!

And so yes…let’s all build Goldman Sachs banker Stu Sternberg a new stadium!!! What if instead of paying 81 million in salary every year he paid for his own freaking facility and the players only earned 40 million. Think they could survive?

Look at the bright spot. At least they won’t be paying 7.65% on that million like you will on ALL of you earnings. For those of you doing better than 118,000 a year…good for you.

  32. tmaxcon Says:

Maybe now the Glazers will admit their mistake and send Lovie to retirement. Let Licht and Koetter run the show.

    ————————————————————————-

Verner’s deal is cheap in 2015 at $4.25M – but averages $6.3 over the 4 years – so its like 3 Verners for Revis’ salary. Same principle though. This was exactly the thinking in releasing Revis – that a CB is not worth that much when you can get 3 or 4 good players for the same price as 1 great player.

I agree with it in principle – but when you go and sign Johnson, Collins and McCown with the $ you saved cutting Revis – it tends to not work out so well.

I LOVE the kid!!!!!!!!! I saw all of his On field warts the way my buddies couldnt. You are the typical person who just regurgitate what is being told without doing your own research which in turn will show you have no idea what you are talking about. To all you “Winston stole crab legs” people, the video shows what Winston’s supporters have been saying. It was a hook up. The video shows he walks right into Publix, up to the seafood counter without waiting and is handed a prepackage container of crab legs. There was no looking around before stuffing them like bucgatr falsely stated (then again he is a obvious gator fan who would rather lie on the former noles player than learn the truth). After receiving the legs, Winston then turns around and walks right out of the store. The hook up. Below is the video in order for you to stop looking stupid and like a liar when discussing winston and the crab legs.

Yea, typical winston hater caught in a lie and instead of addressing the lie, they rather beat around the bush. The video clearly shows you are a liar so as my post stated and many have said, it was the hook up. Sorry you are not cool enough or have never been in a position to get the hook up. You however have been in a position to either lie and make up stories or perform simple research in order to gain the truth. You chose to lie. How can you condemn anyone for having character issues? Some of you are too funny.

I will say this once again. I don’t think Either QB is worth the no. 1 overall pick in This yr’s draft. My opinion is starting to sway on both QB’s more as time wears on though. Just because I bleed Blue and Orange in the college ranks does not in one Iota affect my ability to break down what I want for my Pewter and Red. I know that a lot of people have a problem setting their homerism aside but I am not one of those people. I wanted us to trade down because of my disbelief in BOTH QBs. In the last few weeks BOTH QBs have impressed me and are doing a good job at changing my mind. All I know is that when I try to have a rational conversation here I constantly get attacked by Winston “Enthusiasts” but never by Mariota fans

You probably did back then though I’m sure – LOL. Point being – everyone makes some bad choices in their life. You keep saying he stole it and that is a sexier story for the media to tell and for the gullible people to believe without doing their own research. But it is well known that the publix up there takes care of Noles players plain and simple. It is unfortunate that a cashier up front was unaware of such privileges etc but that is the real fact and thats why Lovie and Licht are not worried about it. Winston fell on the sword for his program because if it were to come out that there were benefits handed out to players then FSU could face possible sanctions. Its obvious you have no idea what a hook up looks like because you can’t recognize one when you see one. FYI…being misinformed (the world is flat) as you stated is okay, but making comments as facts (You saw the tape. He looked all around before stuffing them) as you did is unacceptable. Obviously you did not see the tape, yet you presented an argument as if you did and as if it was fact. Pitiful

  87. bucgatr 71 Says:

Holy snap……..You like “Better call Saul” 87
Then that means you watched all of Breaking Bad

  88. bucgatr 71 Says:

Lol Pickgrin. Regardless of what Joe thinks, I get along with you Noles.
If not Then I wouldnt be married to a woman 15 yrs my jr. for 11 yrs.

  89. Pickgrin Says:

It was a real shame we never got to see Charlie Ward play in the NFL since you mentioned him ’87. That dude was a seriously bad ass QB just like Winston is.

  90. bucgatr 71 Says:

Pickgrin, He may not have been able to ‘change’ the QB position but he would have been Moon + Tarkington 2.0

  91. Pickgrin Says:

I think I must have been one of the very few Noles fans that got to see it in person when Charlie lead that amazing 4th quarter comeback at the Swamp in 93. There certainly weren’t very many FSU fans there that day.

  92. bucgatr 71 Says:

As you know Pick that in those days we were on the verge of our first NC . I saw that game with you. I graduated UF in 89.

  93. bucgatr 71 Says:

My parents held Tix until 1995 when my brother chose to go to Alabama.
    Flucking tratior!

  94. Pickgrin Says:

    That game was so awesome.

“Cmon Gators – Get up and GOOOOOh NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!” 🙂

  95. lurker Says:

“@Pickgrin……….You are quickly rising up the charts of my favorite Winston supporters”

    —————————

it is a short list pickgrin and you might feel lonely…lol

  96. lurker Says:

    roll tide

  97. Pickgrin Says:

But yea – UF has some pretty damn good teams under Spurrier – no doubt. he had that program humming.

  98. bucgatr 71 Says:

Lol ……….No Lurker. There are several JW supporters that I agree with and banter with. I feel grateful to Joe for banning me before. I have been able to have more revealing conversations and separate the “supporters” from the………….Well…….”Tebowites”

  99. Pickgrin Says:

Lurker – we’re gonna make a Winston fan out of this gatr yet. Or rather the Bucs will and Winston will do the rest himself. All of these fools who are non-believers that Jameis is one of the best QBs to come down the pike in quite some time are gonna be converted sooner or later. They will have no choice if they are truly Bucs fans.

  100. bucgatr 71 Says:

    Side Note:
How many of you are happy that Brees no longer has Jimmy Graham as a target?

  101. bucgatr 71 Says:

LOL Pick. I just read your post. If you go up you will see that I Want to Support Winston if he is our pick. I just hate a bunch of knuckleheads flucking with me and helping me to act outside of my comfort zone. I realize this is a choice that only I can make but Idiots help that cause along

  102. bucgatr 71 Says:

Well guys, tonight is poker night as some of you well know because I play with ten or so other guys that are not Bucs fans.
Im not even going to ask them about Winston vs. Mariota this weekend just to throw a monkey wrench in the plan. I am going to be obtuse.
    Later Bucs Fans!!!
    Keep the Buc fight Strong!

  103. Pickgrin Says:

Well at least you’re acknowledging responsibility and not living on De Nial river gatr.

Since we’re all chummy here – do me a favor and watch this video if you haven’t seen it. Dude doing this breakdown of Winston’s one and only loss knows what he’s talking about.

  105. Pickgrin Says:

sounds like gatr must have watched Shawshank Redemption recently with that quote.

  106. DallasBuc Says:

Incompetent Lovie and his lousy lapdog GM made a 4-12 team much (McCown), much (Collins), much (Johnson) worse. Shameful incompetence by tweedle dee and tweedle dumb

Nope but I was at the Choke at the Doak game. Drove from Pasco to see it LIVE.

With the Gators up 31-3 entering the fourth quarter, many thought the rout was on. It ended in a tie.

For those of you that really care to read about that game. Wikipedia it. It’s a good read. Choke at the Doak. Great Game.

  108. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

The Seminoles’ 28-point rally tied the NCAA record for biggest fourth quarter comeback.[1] Despite the fact that Florida did not actually lose, the game has gone down as one of the biggest “chokes” in college football history and has been popularly dubbed the “Choke at Doak,” adding another memorable chapter to the intense rivalry between the two schools

  109. Jack D Says:

This debockal with Collins just shows the ineptness of Lovey in judging talent. How bad he f’s up this year will make or break him.
