More Words On Potential Hawk Exit

hawk

Sometimes Bucs fans are more anxious to get rid of players than add players to the roster. Just yesterday, Joe got two questions on Twitter, “Why hasn’t [insert player] been cut yet?” or “Why is [insert player] still on this team?”

What’s the rush? The season doesn’t start for six months.

Sure, left tackle left tackle Anthony Collins is a dead man walking. It would be a shock if he returned. And, just judging production based on salary, safety Dashon “Hawk” Goldson might be an endangered species.

Add Chris Wesseling to the list of those thinking Goldson is all but gone. The NFL.com scribe has a list of top potential cuts. And what do you know? There is Hawk’s name.

13: Dashon Goldson, Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety: The Bucs temporarily benched Goldson last November, less than two years into a five-year, $41.25 million contract. A liability in coverage at age 30, the hard-hitting safety is no longer worthy of a $7.5 million salary.

Interestingly, Wesseling does not include Collins in his list but does have ghostly defensive end Michael Johnson among the cut casualties.

Joe would not be shocked at all if others on the offensive line join Collins. Overpaid, old and unproductive is not a good combination.

The “Squawk”……mostly talk Goldson can fly away like the rest of the “No Fly Zone”

    The “Squawk”

    LOL

  3. Ray Rice Says:

If they can keep over paying for D-Shot Goldson, Fat A$$$ Collins, Bit*h MJ, then why in the hell would they even think about asking VJax to take a pay cut. They better not. Fukn idiots.

  4. The Buc Realist Says:

Michael Johnson’s nickname “least mode” is still my favorite. I hope they keep him just for that!!!

  5. HawaiianBuc Says:

    @Ray Rice,

Truer words have never been spoken (and I rarely agree with you:) )

Add me to the list of those who believe Hawk is overpaid. His performance on the field left a lot to be desired last year. But … before they start prematurely cutting folks this year (i.e., see last year’s OL cuts), hopefully Lovie and Licht will have a high degree of certainty that there’s someone better in the wings.

Learning how to play the Tampa 2 defense can take awhile as we’ve now seen. Hopefully Lovie and his assistant coaches now have a better idea of who fits and who doesn’t.

  7. bucs4lyfe Says:

Bucs ranked in the top 10 on defense the final 9 weeks in defense even with him as a liability in coverage. Let’s see if licht was true to his words can’t be afraid to admit a mistake and move on from a player. This is a Greg schiano/Dominick free agent that’s Equivalent to the Michael Johnson disaster, Eric wright is oneil cousins

  8. Robert 9 Says:

sux the league clipped this guys nuts right when we signed him. most of what he was good at was stripped from him.

moving forward the 80/20 rule should be in effect when signing FA’s.

80% of them should be limited to guys with upside. say 25-28 years old and or/just coming out of their initial contract. ideally from teams with salary issues where he is the odd man out, but is not at fault. another target would be guys who just do not click with their team for whatever reason or maybe a new coach. stop with these injured guys we think we can rehab. stop with these guys who have all the size and tools, but no natural instincts. stop with the guys they think they can transform their play!

the 20% applies to a very limited number of guys we may desperately need, be it a backup qb, returner etc and may be willing to roll with a guy for ony 2-3 years before he’s washed up…my .02

    Hard hitting?
The NFL Network is playing a clip today of Stephen Jackson running over Goldson after “The Hawk,” hits him in the backfield going sideways. Goldson hits him and just bounces off him like a Pop Warner midget. Hard hitting my a$$.
More like a cheap shot artist who likes to take peoples heads off when they are defenseless. That doesn’t make you a hard hitter, it makes you a head hunter and they normally don’t get in the Hall of Fame.

I like “The Crawk” (TM) he seems like a cool dude, however, he has made ZERO meaningful plays in Tampa. He’s not made a single impact play that I can recall.

His best play was keeping a Falcons fumble from bouncing out of bounds during that a*s-raping the Sucs got in ATL last year.

Such a disappointing signing by Mark and Greg.

I’d rather see Tandy at FS and McDougald at SS unless they get someone in FA or the draft.

    Go Sucs!

Unfortunately, i got to see that one first hand.

As a matter of fact, I’m starting to think that I’M the reason the Bucs get blown out in ATL.

Last two Bucs/Falcons game I’ve been to were this past season and the final game of the Raheem era.

On both occasions, I wore my Bucs jersey AND took the train…

  13. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I’m not so sure I understand all the ins and outs of contracts. If Hawk isn’t worth the money the Bucs are scheduled to pay him then other teams won’t be wanting to offer that much either. And so what can frequently happen is the veteran redoes his contract more in line with “market value” or what he would be able to get on the open market. Frequently that represents a cut on the backside of a player’s career but at least he can still play. A 7.5 million safety who plays like Goldson has for us is grossly overpaid. However he does have talent and is now a year into Lovie’s system. He may be worth a 2.75 million contract. Boo hoo eh? ONLY 2.75 million!!!!!

  14. Pickgrin Says:

I’m pretty sure we can find a much better replacement with the same $4M we will save by cutting Goldson. Preferably a FS that can actually cover. What a concept – eh?

  15. DallasBuc Says:

Joe’s got a point. Does anyone remember the last several waves of hacks that we threw back there to give up the booty for years before Goldson showed up? Maybe the rule changes have lessened the effectiveness in his overall game but this guy is light years ahead of any safety we have had back there since I can’t remember when. When we are stuck with a Sean Jones or Sabby Piscawhoey for the next few years you might miss old Hawk.

  16. ElioT Says:

Anyone remember the “No Fly Zone”? – LMAO!!!!!!!

    The Hawk!

    Revis Island!

    The Red Barron!

Nothing but a bad of d**ks.

    Go Sucs!

  17. ddneast Says:

Actually DallasBuc, Piscatelli had more INT’s than Goldson when he was here and was just as good a tackler. Shows you how bad Goldson’s play has gotten.

    “you might miss old Hawk.”

I like him as a person – and the coaches apparently like him as “an extra coach on the field” (allegedly) – but the simple truth is that Goldson makes all pro safety $ and yet has not made a single, solitary “impact” play in 27 starts as a Buccaneer.

Actually – I have to take that back because I just checked his stats – he had 1 interception in 2013. Probably a meaningless one in a meaningless loss that was immediately followed by a Glennon led 3 and out – since I don’t even remember it.

In 2014 -starting 14 games Goldson had 0 interceptions and 1 pass defensed. Hows that for an $8M a year Free Safety….

Been there so many times after a bad loss in ATL. It’s actually safer getting home from the game when the Falcons win though! Some nasty fans.

Make that 8 months…..remember Joe, according to Lovie the season doesn’t start till November!

  28. MadMax Says:

Ive met about 10-15 Buc fans here in Gville SC. SeanyinSC is one who posts here sometimes. I’ll be at my usual watering hole (carolina ale house) to watch the draft….Hope we get Winston, or if we trade back, Scherff and best LB available.

  29. MadMax Says:

If we go Safety with our 2nd or 3rd pick (maybe trade up in the middle or bottom of 2nd, or a trade back if we go that route) Cody Prewitt would be a great pick up in a shallow draft of Safeties. Then we can get his team mate in the 4th,CB Senquez Golson.

More like the “Crock”, as in can you smell what the “Crock” just left behind in the toilet. The item(s) are another word for Goldsons play

  32. pick6 Says:

even if you take away the penalties, his impact on the field would still have been marginal. for all the nice things said about his leadership, he and his teammates in the secondary got exploited too often to label anybody in that meeting room an adequate leader.
