Bucs Had Terrell Davis Pounding A Podium

February 24th, 2015

lovie 1110bOne of the more soft spoken voices on NFL Network is former running back great Terrell Davis.

But the 2014 Tampa Bay Buccaneers seemed to horrify Davis and get a rise out of him.

In a televised chat about the Bucs’ offseason, Davis expressed extreme distaste for the Tampa Bay offensive line and even said that should be priority No. 1 for Tampa Bay.

That’s right, Davis picked offensive line over quarterback, while saying the Bucs’ needs are “anywhere on the offensive side of the ball.”

Later, he went on to say while banging a podium, “If the Bucs draft Jameis Winston, they better have a line to protect him.”

“Key,” Davis shouted.

And this is why the Bucs really need to find offensive line help in free agency. Joe doesn’t care if it’s inexpensive help or expensive. Please find guys who can block the guys in front of them.

The Bucs are in no position to gamble on a rookie O-lineman alone saving the day for a rookie quarterback and arguably the worst O-line in football.

  1. OB Says:

If you think any rookie is going to start on opening day at QB, you better think again even with the best OL in football.

Glennon or another veteran QB will start until the rookie is ready, if he ever is regardless of who the rookie QB is.

  2. Couch Fan Says:

Later, he went on to say while banging a podium, “If the Bucs draft Jameis Winston, they better have a line to protect him.”

    ———————————————

This can be said about anyone. Especially Mariota considering he has almost twice as many sacks. But I agree that fixing the O-Line is priority #1. Just not with the 1st pick.

  3. Robert 9 Says:

finally a voice of reason from the winston nut huggers.

Trade the pick given there are trade partners, which there will be, and stock the lines. throwing away money in FA has gotten us nowhere the last few years!!

Glennon is a more than capable starter given 3 seconds, and we can get moore or hoyer to back him up. hell, we might even have a running game then too!

either way, koetter is the key to the future, not lovie.

  4. Bob Says:

    How about Michael Oher?

  5. slowbucs813 Says:

@OB You crazy when (if) we draft Winston he’s starting

  6. SOEbuc Says:

Well said robert. If only we had the #2 pick or won one of those 4th quarter losses. I think its a rule of the NFL you have to take the most “talked” about player #1 to keep their dollars and tv ratings up

  7. deminion Says:

Would be the stupidest thing to trade down these ppl that want Glennon to start are silly. Draft the first ever Bucs franchise Jameis. Do u really think Glennon is gunna turn a corner? If u think that don’t watch football. Show me a guy recently were the light bulb came on in yr 3. You either have “It”or u don’t.

  8. Justin Says:

If the Bucs DO draft Winston, they should look to grab Matias early in the 2nd if he’s still around. College teammates would help each other grow professionally.

  9. Rrsrq Says:

Team has so many needs, QB, MLB, OL (2), SS, WR, so obviously they will look to free agency, I just have no faith in that area, but I do believe that the rookie class from last year will show improvement, what did Dirk say, he will coach to his personnel, but players in the best place to succeed. You have to believe last years players were embarrassed and doing everything because jobs are on the line.

  10. WS99 Says:

Coaching coaching coaching and more coaching. Case in point mankins, probowler winner champion yet let every blitzing lb get thru his hole bc he was outside helping the tackles block. I’m convinced that our coaching let’s us down way more than our talent does. Nevertheless I’d draft ol with every other pick.

  11. slowbucs813 Says:

Damn what if we got AP. I like doug but he gotta get out the way for the 2000 yard rusher

  12. Drew Says:

Light bulb came on in year 3… Drew Brees (traded to NO) just to name one.

  13. Ray Rice Says:

A good QB can mask a bad OL anyday. Koetter is the important piece to the puzzle. If he can adapt his scheme to his personnel the YUCS will be ok.

  14. Pickgrin Says:

I would use 3 of the five 2nd>5th round picks on OLine. We need to seriously upgrade the talent and competition level up front. Anyone behind center needs a much better line than what was trotted out last year. Can you imagine what it would have looked like if they hadn’t traded for Mankins??? Bucs need to bring in at least 5 new players via draft and FA to compete for OLine spots.

  15. White Tiger Says:

    My point EXACTLY!

I’ve made it known that I prefer Mariota over Kid Fameis – one of the reasons for this is practical – our current offensive line couldn’t adequately protect the 4.97 forty running QB we ALREADY have (Mike Glennon)…and folks assert that it’s NOT the offensive line we need to worry about…but ANOTHER slow QB?

Do you guys enjoy watching your QB get killed or taken out at a critical point in these games? Because the current line can’t even spring a running game – anytime the opposing defense wants – they can simply key on the pass! Pin their ears back and blow up a play, or our QB!

How many times do you all have to see it before you’ll finally figure it out? You don’t build a pass protecting WALL of an line – that both Napoleon Dynamite and Kid Fameis REQUIRE….overnight or through free agency!?

If we intend to draft Kid Fameis – you might as well just put him on IR in training camp…

  16. The Buc Realist Says:

Ii am not worried, I am sure that the Bucs will be picking top 5 in next years draft, so we can get a Great Tackle then!

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The only trade down acceptable to me is with Tenn….we absolutely, positively must draft one of the QBs……

  18. Robert 9 Says:

alex smith killed it when he went to KC

  19. Pickgrin Says:

Anyone advocating for a trade down is a fool. Perhaps you don’t understand the rare position we are in this year?? We will NEVER have the #1 pick with 2 very good>great QB prospects to choose from. Its a QB driven league and great QBs are super hard to obtain. Drafting one high in the 1st round is really the only decent chance you have aside from getting very lucky.

    Robert 9 Says:

“Trade the pick….Glennon is a more than capable starter”

More than capable starter????? Based on what evidence?

  20. Snook Says:

So you need an offenseive line to block?

    Brilliant, Charles. Brilliant.

  21. White Tiger Says:

    @pickgrin

Great, that means that you will continue losing until the new SPREAD-OPTION offensive linemen you draft will have the same level of transition that you think Marcus Mariota will have…did you even think about that?

Maybe some of you are swerving into a problematic fact: Due to the popularity of the spread attack at the college level – virtually NO offensive linemen are learning anything about the NFL’s “pro style”!!

That’s why I believe Lovie & Licht are actually considering a conversion to a spread-heavy/wco offense. They could draft Mariota, more easily acquire (as you have noted) the abundant offensive linemen, and pair them to the WR/RB’s you already have (most of whom ALSO came from a spread system in college.

Over simplistic maybe – but its already seen great success in Seattle, San Fran, Carolina, and Philadelphia.

I think the transition to a spread/wco hybrid is what Jeff Tedford was hired to run…

…don’t forget the Glazer’s near hiring of Chip Kelly a few years back…I think this transition has been on their minds even before the Eagles made the transition. They correctly brought Lovie in to re-order the defense, first. You really do have to have a stout/fast defense for it to work according to the current NFL model – and the Buc defense might actually be peaking (from what I’ve read, Lovie’s/Dungy’s is a bit counter-intuitive and takes a couple of years before the skill positions have that “aha moment”)!

I just don’t see the franchise re-building another fixed/pass-protecting o-line…they’re too expensive to maintain, too reliant on special athletes (namely a fantastic/huge/athletic Left Tackle), and lately – too hard to find the talent to make it work….those power-man offensive lines are also not flexible/fast enough to flex into a zone-scheme.

I think if you really looked at it – you would see that a giant hand has been writing on the wall for some time now…

  22. Not ...... "The Kevin" Says:

Our O-line looked horrible last season, but when the offense is being coordinated and ran by an individual who has never carried those responsibilities in his entire career, those are there kind of results you can expect. It’s probably kind of difficult to do a good job blocking when nobody on that side of the ball knows what the hell us going on. And having a QB that is not making horrible decisions does not help they’re case either.

Don’t get me wrong, we need better talent on the O-line, but I think it’s probably easier to improve than most think. I personally would have brought incognito…but I guess 30 other teams saw something they didn’t like either. As long as this offense has a coordinator, we should be able to put up some points. Koetter has been around a long time and found success with less than what we have so I am optimistic.

  23. Tom Says:

Wanting Mariota over Winston because the line is poor is pretty terrible reasoning. While the Duck is certainly faster, he doesn’t move as well within the pocket, throw on the run, or avoid sacks the same way Winston does.

What I’m wondering is how many quality O-lineman are hitting the market in free agency?

  24. meh Says:

We can take Winston/Mariota first. Then trade #34 and Glennon for the Browns #19 and get a great tackle (taking one off the board from the Panthers in the process). We can sign Evans when the Saints cut him. That’s a line of: Dotson/Mankins/EDS/Evans/Peat(?). We still have picks in 3/4/5/5/6/7 left and we’ve already fixed the line well enough.

We can fix the line and still take a QB first.

  25. Robert 9 Says:

glennon played fine when given any time at all. when he was sacked it was literally jailbreaks where no one even blocked the blitzer or they whiffed their block completely.

He’s no RGIII, might not even be that elusive, but you could not even say there was a pocket to throw from last year. lol

and yall think a new QB who runs like a lineman and throws INT’s is gonna fix that?

  26. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Now, I N’Told Y’all…A hard head makes a soft a$$. Errrrrrtime.

One of the main reason WHY-we’ve only had (7) 10+seasons winning seasons in 40yrs. Is because we’ve never had a dominate offensive line to sustain drives. Historically we’re one the worst teams in the league –when it gets down to–short yardage and the red zone offense; why though?

If you want to impose your will on your opponent-you bring the WALL to TAMPA. This is why they call us a scatter brain organization-because we draft all over the damn place. Instead of what truly builds a perennial contender-The Hogs up front.

ITS ALL ABOUT TRENCH WAR FAIR BABY!!!

Damn shame, that we’ve only drafted (2) Pro Bowl offensive lineman in 40yrs.

When Dallas just drafted 3 in 4yrs…smh

Don’t get me wrong, Its never the sexy pick. Sh*t they had a website-w/ signed petitions to have Jerry Jones relinquish his control of the team. Talk radio was full of fans hating on the dude. Now he’s setting back like a fat- rat in a cheese factory–Like what–Told Y’all.

  27. Robert 9 Says:

INDIANAPOLIS — Most college football programs don’t have four players invited to the 2015 NFL Combine.

Florida State sent four offensive linemen.

“The entire right side of the line — center/tackle Cameron Erving, guard Tre’ Jackson, tackle Bobby Hart and tight end Nick O’Leary — is present in Indianapolis. All four are projected to follow Bryan Stork, the team’s starting center for its 2013-14 national championship, into the NFL.

“I believe Bryan Stork’s last year was the year that brought us all closer together,” said Tre’ Jackson, one of the top guards available.”

and winston had an all pro line at FSU.

  28. StRicKn Says:

Hopefully Doug Marten can rebound our run game. Running backs really scare me on the Bucs. Despite the dozen needs we could use im down for getting Melvin Gordon if he somehow lands early second round. Think of the offensive upgrade with a QB/Mariota and Gordon. Obviously need a tackle guard/ Iapati but I would pay to watch that offense. Go Bucs!!

  29. StRicKn Says:

As much as I like Gordon gotta love MLB Eric Kendricks. If both fall to the second I will cry with happiness!

  30. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Remember TD -Also said that, he wouldn’t draft neither one of these QB’s. Eric Davis agreed. But then again what do they know-Eric Davis only played w/ Joe Montana & Steve Young-who are those guys?

….And of course TD played w/ John. So screw their opinions right? The talking radio heads know better…lol

    ………………………………………………………………..
LOL Anyone who thinks Glennon ever got a fair shot then their football related opinions are not worth a grain of sand on the beach.

  32. Short Sale Attorney Says:

Sounds like he knows what he’s talking about. O-line better be a high priority after quarterback in this draft or it will be a waste of money.

  33. MTM Says:

I agree the Bucs need o line players or any QB will struggle in their offense. But please stop saying Mariota has a lot of sacks as some negative. Mariota also has ridiculously low interception stats. I would rather the QB take a sack then throw a pick.

  34. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Off Topic:

Ole’ Joe Robbie/Sun Life Stadium renovations look good. C’mon Glazers

  35. bucs4lyfe Says:

Damn….. People still saying Glennon didn’t get a fair shot have serious issues. Glennon is better than mccown which really isn’t saying much however he doesn’t know enough about the NFL or defenses to help a first time struggling offensive coordinator who knows nothing about the NFL. Glennon can’t beat out mariotta or Winston having said that I think with the first pick it’s quarterback, if an o lineman has the top 10 draft chance we’d hear it but this class isn’t worthy.

Winston wins no matter what but mariotta look people talk about his interceptions but never his ball security like when his o line was struggling. Case in point is the early loss to Arizona, the 5 sacks, how often he fumbles doesn’t get publicity because he recovers most of them but it still pours you behind the chains. When bucs did have a solid o line there was 1 first round pick starting and that’s Davin Joseph. Good scouting gets you a donald Penn of a practice squad but where are quarterbacks found? Davis great running back but that doesn’t mean he knows anything about building a team

  36. Robert 9 Says:

    buc4lyfe…you clearly hate glennon.

see where winston had an all pro o-line. I noticed watching his tape he had all day. explains why their center last year now plays for the colts and they had 4 people from the line at the combine.

meanwhile you say a rookie knows more about the NFL than a 3rd year QB.

and glennon might get a 5th or 6th? LOL he’ll easily get a 3rd with a competent GM, but licht might just screw the pooch again and take a 4th and a 46 year old player. history does repeat itself.

  37. LUVMYBUCS Says:

If the option is on the table to trade down w/Philly.

w/ a proposal that Includes, A young Pro Bowl QB, A young Up in coming LT, and TE
+ Multiple Premium drafts- ALL FOR ONE PLAYER…… Sh*********t you make that happen bruh.

  38. Couch Fan Says:

If your talking about Foles. Nope not worth it.

  39. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Couch Fan

Why would you say that brotha?

The dude has been incredibly efficient, throwing few interceptions (except last year). He’s also played in playing in 3 complicated offenses.

    • Air Raid Offense (Arizona Wildcats)
    • Red River (Andy Reid-Philadelphia Eagles)
    • Spread (Chip Kelly Philadelphia Eagles)

You just can’t wake up and make it to the Pro Bowl(*MVP).

  40. LUVMYBUCS Says:

*He’s also played in 3 complicated offenses.

  41. OneBuC55 Says:

    My dream draft…

    Rd1. Jameis WINston
Rd2. Eric Kendricks (keeping my fingers crossed that he’ll be here)
    Rd3. OL
    Rd4. OL…

  42. Dewey Selmon Says:

We are going to fix the OL with FA’s and the draft, right after we select Winston #1!

  43. LutzBuczFan Says:

If it’s anything like trickle down economics…

  44. BoJim Says:

I’m getting to the point where I don’t care which QB we draft 1st or if Glennon starts(hope so) but as others have said, we really really need to build a ‘WALL’.

  45. ufcguy Says:

The bucs are going to be better bc we have a real coordinator who gsmeplans and puts in protections. I definitely think that was probably the main problem last year is we had no real plan and it made us look way way worse than we are. I think with added talent and coaching we are gonna be much better.

  46. Please Says:

White Tiger with the best take these boards have seen in a while. Not sure if it’s right, but man I can see it.

  47. Aubpierce Says:

I wonder how many interceptions Winston will throw behind the Bucs current offensive line? I think 25 would be a good guess. I wonder how many sacks might he have in spite of his blazing sub 5.0 speed. I think around 65 would be a safe number. You can’t replace this jv offensive line in one free agency and one draft. Find a fool and pick up 8 additional draft picks over the next two years and start rebuilding. Draft a QB with the first pick and I will most likely be dead before they win consistently. Replace the offensive line and most of the defensive line and I might see a winner.

  48. White Tiger Says:

@Please – given the hype and hyperbole surrounding the the ‘talents’, and the downplay of the character issues and immaturity of Kid Fameis…I’ve either missed it completely…or this is the best managed psych job since Gruden & Allen took USC’s MIKE Williams out to dinner…just before drafting Cadillac Williams…

  49. White Tiger Says:

You’re not going to find a left tackle in this draft…at least not one that will play in front of Kid Fameis…

I’m telling you, it’s more than just not drafting Kid Fameis because don’t have a line…

The problem is the available talent…

  50. bucs4lyfe Says:

Me hate glennon? no I hate glennon fans more than I do glennon, I can clearly see how average he is but all I hear is excuses for why he’s been a below average quarterback since he came into the league. being better than any quarterback on our roster doesn’t mean your a starting quarterback or a franchise quarterback, it means the position is weak…….easily get a 3rd with a competent GM? can anyone tell me what this dude has done that says im worth a 3rd round, a desperate team may give that up but they haven’t so far. glennon had every chance to keep the starting job when mccown got hurt but instead he heard the footsteps of josh mccown and fell apart hahahaha. 60% completion percentage doesn’t say 3rd pick

  51. bucs4lyfe Says:

for his entire career he’s 59% lol but for a guy who takes care of the ball and is afraid to throw deep he sure compares to josh freeman’s completion percentage

  52. Todd Says:

I’d tell davis you don’t win superbowls without John elway! You got to have a legit qb! Yes we have a bad oline but it’s been proven you can draft oline guys late! It’s rare you pick a great qb late.

  53. Johnny Dejay Says:

It’s possible to fix the offensive line via trades and free agency. In most cases, it’s not possible to get a franchise quarterback via trade and free agency. Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, and Brett Favre are the very rare exceptions. Franchise quarterbacks are usually drafted, and they are usually drafted early in the first round.

Draft one of the quarterbacks and rebuild the offensive line through the draft, trades, and free agency.

  54. deminion Says:

@Drew key word recently. Bress was already good

  55. Phillip Says:

    LMB

Derek Anderson on line one says you can just make a pro bowl one season..

  56. White Tiger Says:

Most of you FSU fanboys are just quoting what you’ve heard. You wouldn’t know a franchise QB if he smacked you in the face.

and you definitely have ZERO understanding of how to build an o-line. It’s very rare that one team drafts a college QB’s ENTIRE offensive line…I’d say, it’s been done exactly NEVER (dumbest thing I’ve ever heard was saying that Kid Fameis college line was “all pro”…uh, no, no they were not). The last time we built an o-line utilizing existing scrubs (our roster), has-been scrubs (free agency) and college scrubs (late round o-linemen) was 2001…the year Gruden brought in this brand new offense to the Bucs called “The West Coast Offense”…remind ANY of you of a SIMILAR topic we’ve been talking about lately (has to do with Chip Kelly, Jeff Tedford, Seattle, San Francisco, Carolina and lately the Eagles….)?

…it’s funny watching you all twist yourselves in knots to avoid the reality that you can’t protect a drop back QB with a swiss cheezwhiz offensive line…!?

    Nutjobz.
