Lookin’ Good

February 20th, 2015

Earlier this week, a photo of an allegedly bloated Jameis Winston surfaced on the interwebs and quickly went viral.

Naturally, the Winston haters erupted in glee and mocked him for being the second-coming of Jared Lorenzen.

Apparently, it was a photo from just after the college football season some two months ago. Now, Winston’s season-long bad ankle is healed and he is svelte, in shape.

Yet when he (finally) met today with hundreds of the 1,097 credentialed members of the fourth estate at the NFL Combine in frozen Indianapolis, Winston poked fun at the photo and the ruckus it created.

“A lot of people thought I was fat,” Winston said with a smile from ear-to-ear. “I am proving everybody wrong. I look good and I know it.”

The barrage of PR efforts continue…..a real pounding….

Sort of like that finale at a fireworks show…..you think it’s over but….no…more to come.

I’m OK with it….probably more than most Mariota supporters because I could easily accept Winston as a Buc……but it is really amusing to me to see the desparate attempts to convince….

Joe, you would make a great campaign manager for a candidate who polled at 1% the day before an election!!!

You can get on board or find a new team

Or you can root against your own team.

Regardless, come April 30 at 8:05, Jameis will be a buc. Deal with it.

    @Tampabaybucfan

    Winston- 56%
    Mariota-27%

    @Nick

The JBF poll is not a scientific poll…..it is an opinion poll that does have some merit….but it must be looked at in perspective. Results cannot be projected to the entire Buc fanbase.
To be scientific….a poll would have to measure the appropriate percentage of women & men….ages, races etc. Sure the poll should measure results from Buc fans rather than NFL fans….not necessarily just ticket purchasers….but regular Buc TV viewers also.
The reason why the non JBF polls are so dominant for Mariota is that they are primarily driven by public opinion of the two QBs….and the public opinion of Mariota is better at this time.

Joe’s poll is somewhat skewed because the host has bias toward one of the QBs and that bias influences opinion. I do believe many have changed their mind after the National Championship Game….and there also may be some Mariota supporters who have left….but I don’t think many.
I’m not saying this poll doesn’t mean anything…it does….but what I am saying is that it “is what it is”….It is a poll of JBF readers who post…..and that is a very small sample (no offense Joe) of the universe of total Buc fans…..hundreds of thousands. It may even be a small sample of JBF readers (only Joe would know that stat)

  9. Greg Schiano Says:

Joe knows Jameis….but does Joe know Jameis shoulder??? Jameis Winston having weakness in his throwing shoulder and also in his brain:

“I got the same shoulder I done had the last two years at Florida State,” Winston said when asked whether he was experiencing any discomfort.

Per ESPN, he may have trouble throwing the ball and he certainly has trouble with the spoken English language. He really sounded defensive in the interview, but don’t say nothing bad about Winston or Joe will go Postal on your Mariota Mob!!

Winston is not going to stand up to the scrutiny of the combine and I bet dollars to donuts he does not throw in the combine! Mariota and Bryce Petty are going to throw at the combine and they will prove they can handle being a QB under center!

Lovie….tell America you personally did an MRI on the shoulder and Jameis is good to go……so that you can later draft someone else!

  10. bucrightoff Says:

The ESPN poll has Mariota as the choice by almost 2-1 in just Florida. So Joe’s poll is indicative of JBF readers and not Buc fans as a whole

  11. ddneast Says:

Please Joe, enough with all the propaganda about Winston. Enough is enough.
If Winston is so great, why are the teams speculated about moving up in the draft wanting to do so In order to get Mariota.
Don’t discount Lovie picking Mariota first to see what offers come flooding in after he does so. I don’t hear a whisper about Anyone trying to move up in the draft to snag Winston.
You would come off as a lot more credible if last year you had not been pushing for the Bucs to draft Manzell. Kind of puts in a hole in your credibility.

  12. Nick Says:

    @Tampabaybucfan

I understand all of that. I also understand any of the polls that favor Mariota that we can throw those out too. The issue is that there is a huge reason why Joe gives a disproportionate amount of press to Winston: because he’s most likely going to be our quarterback. This isn’t based on some random “gut-feeling” but examining the evidence that exists and gauging the opinion of all the experts. Right now, an overwhelming majority of experts believe Winston is the pick. They could be wrong. But this game that the Mariota Mob plays where they dismiss anything supportive of picking Winston is getting old.

  13. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

The irony…the same guy who said it isn’t a recent photo posted a more recent pick on his own website…wearing the exact same outfit. Even though it was months ago?

    I don’t buy it, people.

I can see where the old Bucs message board wacko are hanging out now. Shame, this used to be a great site now I only read Joe’s posts.

  17. Luther Says:

Fan polls mean nothing. Most fans don’t even know what they are watching. Any person who knows a lick of what to look for can tell you Winston is the better QB. There’s really no debate on that.

  18. Brandon Says:

I like Winston a lot, but apparently his body far percentage was still 20.9, which is incredibly high for his weight. This suggests he carries at least an additional 46+ pounds of fat on him. Just to have him at a reasonable level for a QB (15-16%) he’d still need to drop an additional 10 lbs. This doesn’t concern me so much as a work ethic issue, just as a propensity to get fat. Teddy Bridgewater was small and fat last season, it isn’t a huge deal at Winston’s position…but he would probably be far more effective at a lighter weight.

Just the fact that 12% of these people think that Petty has any future as an NFL starter completely invalidates this poll.

  20. Navy Chief Says:

Ready for JEMEIS!!! Hell of a job at the podium today. He is the only QB ready for the NFL and the will be the future of the BUCCANEERS!

  21. Eric Says:

Pretty much the exact same size as Luck

    Jameis is 10 lbs lighter.

    Newton routinely plays at 250lbs.

The haters need to come up with some new material. This stuff is weak.

  22. rayjay1122 Says:

I am hoping we take Mariota but Winston did do a better job at the podium than I expected. He does have an upbeat personality and in that regards I feel like he is a likable young man. I was glad to hear in the very beginning that he mentioned his previous issues off the field. I still think Mariota will be a better NFL QB and is a much better risk off the field as well. That is just my opinion though.

First, the polls are not scientific so you do not know what they represent. Joe’s poll is more likely to represent people who are emotionally connected to the Buccaneers. Their are people that do not want the Buccaneers to draft Jameis Winston for various reasons. (e.g. they want him on their team, he will make the Bucs a championship team, etc.)

  26. Eric Says:

Can’t throw and has trouble with the “spoken English language”

I guess you have trouble with the “written English language”

Oh yeah you are waaaaaaay smarter than Jameis.

I can respect your words rayjay. Salute..

  28. 87ForWinstonNOMariota Says:

What do the mock drafts say?

Yep…they still say Winston has a 9-3 lead over Mariota to be picked by the Bucs.

Check back after the combine when Winston is done with his surgery.

  29. Matt Says:

Man, I think a lot of these Winston haters on JBF are pu**y a** B!tches. This guy is an absolute stud and a winner and a technically sound QB. He’s a leader of men at 21. I bet these internet tough guys would crap their pants if they met jameis in real life. And jameis would be prob be so cool about it that they wouldn’t know how to react. This is the future of the NFL. The fact so many old uptight pricks want to fight the inevitable is disappointing. I just hope the glazers, lovie, and licht aren’t in that same group.

  30. P'cola Buc Says:

    @87

I researched all the mock drafts I could find during the past week (45 in total).
As per dcprosports the results were as follows:

    Winston : 34
    Mariota : 10
    Williams:01

    87’s analysis = confirmed.

  31. Harry Says:

I love this kid even more now. What an awesome face of the franchise he will be!

  32. Bucfan4life Says:

TBBF you touched on the real reason for the change in the poll results. Being a non FSU fan, but a true Buc fan, I could care less where the next QB we get went to college (unless he went to UCF in which case I would be all for it). Most on this site are more knowledgeable than casual Buc fans that focus on the headlines. I would guess the majority of posters here watched the Rose Bowl and championship games closely to watch these two QBs play. After watching MM in that system I had serious doubts. That is IMHO the primary reason for the shift in the polls. Having said that I have now watched a lot more video of MM in games outside of the two that everyone saw. After watching more of this kids highlights throughout his college career I feel that the Bucs probably can’t go wrong with either one of these guys.

  33. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

I know right Harry. He has this infectous quality about him. If he’s not your guy you probably wont like him claiming too arrogant or too brash. If he is your guy you find yourself loving that sh** and you see it more as supreme confidence and guile. Both of which my beloved Buccs so desprately need.

  34. Anzac Buc Says:

He just clock 4.97 in the 40. Hey hey hey it faaaaat Jameis
