“I’m A Quarterback”

Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston is a quarterback. That’s right. He told Joe and hundreds of assembled media types at the NFL Combine in frozen Indianapolis just moments ago.

Joe will provide the highlights.

Winston didn’t duck one question, didn’t dodge. He had an opening statement, which is rare for players at the combine. Winston confessed he had made mistakes while a student at Florida State, apologized and stressed he has learned from his mishaps and wants to set a good example for his little brother, his parents and other children.

Oh, and he professed his great desire to make “the Glazer family” proud, and build “a positive image” by working in the community.

Joe asked Winston if indeed his baseball career was over, or if he was going to try to play both sports, like Deion Sanders and Bo Jackson did.

Winston smiled and replied, “I’m a quarterback.” Then he added more.

“Right now I am just focused on football,” Winston said. “I am a quarterback. This is actually the first time I ever just had an offseason just to work on being a quarterback. I have been playing baseball. I was a pitcher. Maybe that is why I had the shoulder thing.

“But, this is the first time I ever had an offseason and I love it. I love it. I love just putting everything to football. I am a quarterback. This is what I do.”

Oh, and he also wins.

From what Joe saw with the grizzled, cynical press, Winston seemed to have won them over.

Winston had charisma, didn’t dodge any questions, even from those that tried to pin him down as the next Johnny Football, and actually seemed to enjoy himself, even poking fun at the photo that went viral on the interwebs that purported to show him with a beer gut, even joked with one reporter about why he turned pro.

Joe will have more on Winston shortly.

Listening to the PC right now on 620 and damn I’m fired up. Can’t wait to see this guy leading the Bucs for the next 10 years

  2. tmaxcon Says:

It will be nice having a qb with fire and the passion to win when bucs Draft Winston.

    Go Bucs!

    Fire Lovie

  3. cmurda Says:

You’re not just a Quarterback, you’re the quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Jameis. Long live Winston.

  4. Nick Says:

If confidence was the only measure of ability, Winston would be a first ballot HoFer.

Saw the Winston presser…..he did surprisingly well….and I have a Mariota bias. He was genuine and gave very honest….”down-home” type answers….no major gaffs…..looked somewhat comfortable….infectuous smile….
Aside from his obvious struggle with public speaking….all was good.

But…..talk is cheap….it will still depend on the trust factor.

  6. Bird Says:

“Right now I am focused on football.” Sorry guys. Not a hater. Want the best qb that will give bucs the most wins. slightly in favor off mariota but again just want best Qb.
What happens if he goes to bucs and they keep being the bucs and don’t have success. Will he then go to MLB and in his initial press conference say “right now I am focused on baseball.”
    Making me real nervous .

  7. MarshallU Says:

So Jamarcus Winston just stood there and said a whole lot of the exact same things that Johnny Manziel said there last year. Flashback Friday

  8. Nick Says:

    @bird

the Bucs will be giving him a $35-$40 million dollar contract for 5 years. Minor league ball players barely make 50grand. He’s done with baseball.

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I believe his quote was…..”I’m a quarterback, right now, and it feels good”…..what does that “right now” mean exactly…..

I would have been happier with “I’m a quarterback….not just for now but permanently”

  10. WS99 Says:

I would have preferred him say “yall can suck my nuts”

Interesting that you post that Joe. Another article said this is what Winston said:

On focusing solely on football for the first time, and not being a two-sport star

    — “The thing is, I don’t even know how good I really am yet. This is the first offseason I’ve had since I was four years old. I’ve never ever been into February talking to media and especially playing quarterback… This is the first time I’ve been a quarterback all year round.”

  12. Rrsrq Says:

Mike Evans presser “that’s my quarterback, man”
Gene Deckerhoff “Winston brings team to the line, Sims in motion out of backfield, Winston throws, fade to Mike Evans, Touchdown Tampa Bay, Bucs win, Bucs win, Jameis Winston, from FSU, puts the team on his shoulders, game over.

  13. Stanglassman Says:

I don’t think he could have been more clear on being a full time QB. He talked about how every other offseason at this time of year since he was 4 years old he was playing baseball in Feb. . That is why he said he was so excited to be focusing on being a QB year round. How is he going to be a face of someones franchise, win Superbowls and make the HOF (all goals he stated) if he plans on playing baseball instead?

  14. Dave Says:

You people need a life a job some friends and a girl.. Losers living their lives through a website

  15. Ernest T. Bass Says:

GM’s and coaches were turned off by that press conference! If you make mistake after mistake off the field, you do not walk in all cocky and arrogant!

You need to show you have some remorse and you hope some team gives you a chance. Saying you will win the next Superbowl against Brady is just overkill!

He blew it! He clearly is not the sharpest tool in the shed, that came across like a huge red light!

  16. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Cocky and arrogant = swagger and the “it” factor.

  17. Robert 9 Says:

So true bass……he’s a Moran with a 4.0. Zero common sense

  18. BK Says:

What previous QB draftee would say I am planning on playing Peyton or Tom in the next SB??? Clueless!!! NOT NFL ready. Doesnt get the TEAM concept. I cant wait until his wonderlic score is revealed.

Here is another example he doesnt get it: He said after the combine he and Mariota would never be compared again… Yeah they (media) hardly ever compare the 2 top QB of every draft….

He has a LONG LONG LONG way to go mentally.

  19. Couch Fan Says:

Im laughing at the idiotic comments. Yea shame on him for being confident in himself and thinking he’s going to be the best once he steps out on the field. What a bad bad man. I much prefer a QB with a losing attitude to lead us to 2-14 again.

  20. Bird Says:

    @nick
Per cba and they base on past years he wil get 5 years 25 million. Plus I have seen players go straight to the bigs and make millions. His dream is to be closer for the Yankees and they got lots of money

  21. LetThe BabyCry Says:

I want my QB to have a little fire to him Payton Manning Tom Brady Phillip Rivers all have that cockiness about them. Most of you guys on here are probably still living with your parents.

Speaking of having “zero common sense”, can you explain to us what a “Moran” is?
