Top Buccaneers Mysteries Of 2014 — No. 16

February 19th, 2015

In many ways, Tampa Bay’s 2014 season was more bizarre than the MRSA-infected, quarterback-gone-mental, Fire-Schiano-billboards campaign of 2013.

There were plenty of real Bucs mysteries last year, and Joe’s revisiting the most interesting of the bunch.

No. 16 — Sticky Spot

To hell with DeflateGate. Where’s the NFL investigation into the bizarre, ball-snatching plastic turf at Ford Field in Detroit?

During last season’s mugging at the hands of the Lions, Bucs starting center Evan Dietrich-Smith rolled a snap back to Josh McCown. Fumble/turnover for Tampa Bay, when the game still in reach and the Bucs near midfield trailing 14-3.

McCown was asked about the muffed snap after the game and replied Dietrich-Smith found a bad spot on the Detroit turf. That’s right, not a divot on grass, not a frozen field in December, but a tricky patch of fake grass.

“Evan just said he caught a bad spot in the ground and the ball didn’t come up,” McCown said. “So those are just bad breaks.”

McCown elaborated to say that when Dietrich Smith dragged the ball to snap it, then it got stuck.

Joe still doesn’t get what happened there, when our 300-pound center was no match for an alleged sticky spot.

Simple. EDS is a terrible center. He rolled the ball on numerous other occasions throughout the season.

Mystery solved, there now wasn’t that easy?

By far the funniest game of the year. Gotta give props to mccown for getting up after each vicious hit put on him by mr Suh. Not sure many people could have kept taking a beating like that.

So that’s what the bearded turd does when he’s the “first one” in the building. Study up on the lamest excuses for his shotty, not give a crap, effortless play.
